How’s it, indeed! Episode 411 of The Adelaide Show takes us on a remarkable journey with Ben Voss, a South African performer who’s recently landed in Adelaide, bringing with him a treasure trove of stories, a global talent visa, and a one-man show that dissects the intricate process of finding a new home. We also keep the international feel going with an exclusive interview with Bettina Bitchkinky, who will be in Adelaide this month to host Club Eurovision. She is a major star in Belarus and she’s teaming up with Glynn Nicholas and dozens of glittering performers to create one crazy night at the Arkaba Hotel. For the SA Drink Of The Week, we are imbibing our beverage through the medium of Barossa Valley Gourmet Fudge. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we’re dipping back into the archives of Fergus Maximus and Dr D with another track about South Australia from their Fringe show, Back in ADL. Running Sheet: From South Africa And Belarus With Love This Adelaide Fringe 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:02:25 SA Drink Of The Week The South Australian Drink Of The Week this week is actually a fudge with port by Barossa Valley Gourmet Fudge. Steve met Julie at a workshop he was running through the week for Regional Development Australia (RDA) Barossa Gawler Light Adelaide Plains (BGLAP). You’ll find her wares at the Barossa Farmers Market. She makes her fudge by hand in the Barossa Valley using local fresh cream, fresh Australian butter, and basically everything that is wholesome (in that special way that fudge does it). In a delightful twist, Steve Davis and Ben Voss eschew traditional liquid libations for a tasting of Barossa Valley Gourmet Fudge. They sample two decadent varieties: Port and Roasted Almond Truffles and Dark Chocolate Port and Raisin Fudge. The duo engages in a playful, descriptive tasting that transforms the fudge into a sensory journey, complete with metaphors ranging from “grandma’s feather bed” to “an air safety bag for your palate”. 00:10:20 Ben Voss Ben Voss opens up about his theatrical migration from South Africa to Australia, sharing the profound personal and artistic motivations behind his one-man show “Becoming Benno”. He candidly discusses the pivotal moment during the Durban riots that sparked his family’s decision to seek a new life, painting a nuanced picture of leaving one’s homeland not out of desperation, but with hope and intentionality. The conversation explores Ben’s artistic reinvention, from being a established performer in South Africa to becoming an eager newcomer in Australia. He reflects on the humbling yet invigorating experience of rebuilding his artistic identity, emphasising his belief that quality work will ultimately speak for itself. Particularly compelling are Ben’s observations about South Africa and Australia, comparing their social dynamics, discussing the complexities of cultural representation in comedy, and celebrating the egalitarian spirit he sees in his new home. Becoming Benno at the Woodville Town Hall and The Warehouse Theatre in Unley. 00:47:20 Bettina Bitchkinky, Club Eurovision In a riotous segment, Bettina Bitchkinsy, the “glittering jewel of Belarus Broadcasting,” brings her larger-than-life persona to the show. Hosting Club Eurovision at the Adelaide Fringe, she offers a hilariously unfiltered perspective on European culture, performance, and audience participation. Her advice is as bold as her personality: come prepared to wave flags, use “clackers,” potentially drink vodka, and absolutely not be shy. Bettina describes Eurovision as a “cosmic salad” of European identity, complete with feta cheese and “nuts” (both literal and metaphorical). She promises an interactive show where audience members get to vote live, emphasizing it’s “not like the Trump election” but a truly democratic experience. Her tips for attending include bringing 23 friends (for some mysteriously precise statistical reason), being ready to make noise, and potentially spending $10 for her coveted autograph. Get tickets for the March 19, 2025, glittering spectacular, here: Club Eurovision. 01:02:05 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Cross Out The King by Fergus Maximus and Doctor D. (You can hear a full show with this duo in Episode 387). They have a Fringe show again this year, with tickets here: Back in ADL (more Sweet Home Songs). The episode concludes with a musical tribute by Fergus Maximus and Dr. D, featuring their song “Cross Out The King” – a playful exploration of Adelaide’s street-naming quirks. The track delves into the local myth that one cannot cross King William Street, revealing the humorous backstory of how Adelaide’s founding fathers managed their street-naming ambitions.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if I told you that you could crush it in life and business without burning out? That you could make money, create impact, and enjoy the journey—without sacrificing your health, relationships, or happiness?Yeah, I know. Sounds almost too good to be true. But trust me, it's not. It all comes down to balance. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I'm breaking down the 10 Alignments of a Happy Hustler—the S.O.U.L.M.A.P.P.I.N. system—so you can assess where you're thriving and where you need to level up. SOUL MAPPIN' is your soul's map to the blissfully balanced promised land. Be real with yourself. No sugarcoating. 5 is like an A you're crushing it. You're happy hustlin 4 is like a B You're satisfied making progress 3 is like a C. You're okay and getting by 2 is like a D You're slacking and need to step it up and then 1 is like an F You're significantly lacking This will give you clarity on what's working and what needs some serious attention.Let's Break It DownSelfless Service – Are You Giving Back? It's all about making a difference. When was the last time you gave your time, money, or expertise to help someone else? Use the GIFT acronym: Give, Insight, Finances, Time—and start small.➡️ Daily Action Task: Do one random act of kindness today. Buy someone's coffee, give a genuine compliment, or donate your time to help a friend in need.Optimized Health – Are You Feeling Your Best?Without health, nothing else matters. Your physical and mental well-being should be a top priority. Use the ENERGY system: Exercise, Nutrition, Environment, Rest, Gallon of Water, Youthfulness.➡️ Daily Action Task: Move your body for at least 30 minutes, drink quality water, and get solid sleep!Unplug Digitally – Are You In Control of Your Devices or Are They Controlling You?Phones, social media, endless notifications—they can suck your soul if you're not careful. Segment 7 – Do the Shit That You Love “I believe the singular reason that I have been financially successful is cause I don't care about financial success. Like, find your process. Find your thing. Live within your means. This goes back to a lot of the things that I'm thinking about. When people do things for other people's affirmation it makes them incredibly emotionally vulnerable. We're in a very special time here. Find the thing that makes you happy doing it. Not because of any other part. And so if you can find something you love, when shit hits the fan you're not going to be looking for the next trend. You're going to be chilling here for the next two, three, four years waiting for it to flip back up. That's a beautiful feeling. It's fun to be in the shit when it's the shit you like being in.” -Gary Vee (Theme music plays, pencil scratching in the background)  in a whispered tone P: Transcripts D:Mr. Gary Vee F:Dude, that's pretty profound D:You know, so, he brought up a lot of…OK. He brought up a lot of things that people need to do. You know one…something my grandfather always told us, uh, you know, he said ‘Find what you love doing and people will pay you to do it.' So, it's true. And he's saying ‘Find what you love.' Actually his exact words were ‘Find the shit that you love.' So, now, he also mentioned if you're doing things for other people's approval, my words, well, why are you doing it? Cause you're just making yourself vulnerable to…cause here's the thing: (sighs) when it comes to people's approval, you don't need anyone's  approval but your's.  F:That's taken many years for me to learn that for myself.  D:Um, quick story, cause I like telling stories.  F:Everybody on the carpet. Story time. D: (laughs) Um, so, 21, almos…almost 22 years ago, um, I married a young lady. Still married to her, obviously. And, um, went and got married and we eloped. Then we went to go see my parents.  F:How did that go over? Or is that part of the story? D:Oh it's coming… F:Sorry. I didn't mean to get ahead (laughs) D:You're like ‘Wait a second' F:Well you kinda looked at me like… D:Yeah…well…so we went to go see my parents and, you know, walked in the house and Shannon came with me, and my parents were…long story short: my parents, I'll, I'll backtrack a little before we got married. My parents received a letter from, I guess, my step-grandma. Yes…Shannon's, Shannon's step-grandma, cause her grandfather remarried. Um, and my step grandmother in law, this is while we were dating, wrote a letter to them saying how bad of a person that my mother…future mother in law…was and then pretty much closes it out in a, in a sense of saying ‘…and Shannon is gonna be just like her.' F:I'm sure that created a lot of stereotypes for your parents. D:There was a rift in the family. Me…and my parents were like ‘You're not marrying her.'  F:Oh, really? D:Yes. I was told that I'm not going to marry her.  F:They told you that you couldn't do something (laughs)  D: (laughs) And you know me. Don't tell me I can't do something, right? So, um, fast forward, um, actually, so we broke it off, actually  we, we broke it off for a, for a year and so I could try and figure out how to make everybody happy. And you know what? You can't make everybody happy. It's impossible. Nothing can happen. So, I go in and uh, she's down in Florida and I'm up in Georgia, and then I'm like ‘This is stupid' and I call her up and I'm like ‘Hey. You love me?' She goes ‘Yeah' ‘Well, I love you too. Let's get married.' She's like ‘OK' I literally left… F:Wait, wait, wait. That's how you proposed? D:No I proposed…so I proposed before. F:Oh, so there was a, OK   D:So fast forward there…There was a proposal before. We broke it off. She gave me the ring back.  Literally, I got the ring back.  F:Gotcha D:Everything, and it was like that for a year, and, and then, you know, a year goes by and I'm like ‘This is Stupid.' I gotta go and meet with the people at the school. I gotta deal with my co-workers.' Change one word in that sentence and everything about your life changes. ‘I get to wake up in the morning. He, going from where he came from to where he is, he is a very, very successful man. And honestly, if anybody can look at his life and mimic it, they would be amazing. But then take it to the next level. Change your mind. Change the way we think.  F:That, that mindset that I think a lot of us get stuck in… D:I gotta go do this. I get to take my kid…my son to practice.  F:That's making it sound like it's a, a difference between being a chore… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/support

(0:00) Moderator: “Why are weak men such a problem?” Jordan Peterson: Well weak people are a problem, in general. And I don't mean physically weak. I mean cowardly, let's say, and deceitful because, I'm thinking it more in terms of moral weakness. Well, there's a variety of reasons, is, first of all if you can't support your own weight, let's say, and someone else has to do it. And that's not good. And then if you don't make your pathway, if you don't pick a forthright and useful and noble pathway through life then you'll become bitter and, and, and too hurt by the tragedy of existence then you tend to seek your revenge wherever you can get it. And that's not good. So, it's a, it's a mistake on all fronts, it's not good for your it's not good for your family, it's not good for the community, um, it's certainly not a good medium to a long term strategy because life is very, very difficult. (Theme music plays, pencil scratching in the background)  in a whispered tone P: Transcripts  D: (inhales) There was a lot there F:That hit me (pause) to the very core D:Well… F:And it's just because based on that, based on Jordan's words, I look back on my life and Iv'e seen a lot of times where I have been weak. D:Well, I'll go, so… F:And I, I'm not taking judgement out on myself. I'm talking accountability and understanding WOW! D:So, (sighs) we all have weak moments. F:Correct D:Um, you know, it, (sighs) I find it interesting that you know, that the question started off as why are men, weak men such a problem. And I know that this, this conversation went back to that later on, discussing the man side. F:Correct D:And we'll, we'll go to that another time too. But I think Jordan took it in the right direction. You know, He says, you know, weak people are a problem. And then he clarifies that, you know, you know, you know not talking about physical weakness, cause there are a lot more stronger people out there than me when it comes to physical strength. But, he, then he says cowardly. So let's start there. What makes a coward?  (2:36)  F:A coward is someone who doesn't make the choice to stand up to difficult situations  D:You know he… F:They turn tail and run.  D:Well he…  F:I think that cliché is often used. D:Well, and he…well, yeah. You know he, he talks, he, he, he, he said, you know, deceitful people, um, morally weak people, so let's talk about morally weak. And no, we are not talking about keeping it in your pants. (Laughs) F:Morality I think is something that … D:We've forgotten about. Our society… F:Yeah. Our society has forgotten about it. D:They've pushed it to the side.  F:Because morality… D:There's multiple definitions of, of morality and being moral. Different, and, and each one of them are a valid definition. You know… F:Right. In this sense are, I think we are talking about the morality of just the difference between what is right and what's wrong. D:Yeah! That's literally what this is about. And there is a right and there is, well, a wrong. This is not about My Truth versus Your Truth. So then, then we're,  so we're separating the truth. I, I, I honed in a lot on the My Truth. That really irritates me, because all you are saying is ‘My Opinion' What this is saying, what is actually morally right? We all, OK, we all know, take religion out of this completely, we all know I have no right to go up to anyone and kill them. That's wrong. We were born knowing that.  F:here's another one for ya. Can I walk into a bank and just tell the person at gunpoint that I want the money? D:Yeah, you can.  F:No, is that morally right? D:No. That's the, again, so you're taking something that doesn't belong to you. And that's the, that's also the deceit side that he talks about.  F:Mm huh D: (sighs) F:Is it morally right to, to tell a lie?  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/support

Segment 3 – Stop Being Offended (0:00) (Audience laughing in the background) “What happens if you say that and someone gets offended? Well, they can be offended. What's wrong with being offended? When did ‘sticks and stones may break my bones' stop being relevant? Isn't that what you teach children for God's sake. That's what you teach toddlers :”He called me an idiot. Don't worry about it. He's a dick.” Then you have adults going ‘I was offended. I was offended, and I have rights.' Well, so what. Be offended. Nothing happens. You're an adult. Grow up. Deal with it. I was offended. I don't care!   -Steve Hughes (Theme music plays, pencil scratching in the background)  in a whispered tone P: Transcripts  D:Are you offended? F:I'm so offended! D:(laughs) F:And you don't care D:I honestly, see, you, so I love comedy F:(laughs) D:and you, you know, comedy is one of the most amazing things if you think about it. With comics, comedians, and it's getting harder for the comedians, it is getting harder and harder because of the way our world is and the way people react. Um, but comedians, they can take a serious subject  F:Like hot topic subjects D:Very Hot topics F:Ok D:They can talk about racism, they can talk about sexual… F:Politics D:Politics, it doesn't matter what the subject is and they can take it and they can discuss it in a way with humor because there is truth to everything, every, you know, we're, (laughs) in being intentional, which we're gonna talk about that , knowing what words mean, and understanding words…it's an education thing. It, it's all about …yeah, we just gotta be smarter people, we gotta keep learning.  We stop learning. We do. So, yeah, this comedian, he talks about being offended. And it's funny and you hear people laughing. Those people were laughing, they were enjoying themselves.  And they were laughing because he was talking about being offended. What happens when you are offended? When you get offended. You've been offended before, right? (2:21) F:(laughs) Yes D:I've been offended F:Yes, I'm, I'm sorry I was just sitting there going ‘When, there, yeah, I sometimes D:Yu took offense to something? F:I sometimes have gotten offended way too easily. D:People leave churches because of taking offense. F:Yes D:People cancel people, cancel culture, because they are offended  F:I'm gonna say this, marriages end because of offense D:Marriage ends because of people getting offended. So, do we care? Some things we should care about. If a marriage is ending because people get offended then that's because there is a lack of understanding. That's a relationship issue, that's a communication issue. F:And honestly I think that anytime anyone gets offended it is because of a lack of understanding  D:OK F:I feel that misunderstandings are what cause offense to come about D:Yes, It is F:And, and what he said though, what was his name, I'm sorry D:I can't remember his name, I'll find it and we'll post it F:We'll post it, anyway, but didn't he say something to the effect of … D:Ok, Ok, thank you, drive safe F:Just want you to know you are gonna be n the book now. Because they heard you…(laughs) D:(laughs) She's ok with it F:Transcripts D:It's all part of our… F:It's all part of life D:It's all part of the Youngblood Life Podcast, so it, it is what it is F:But it's going in the book now…anyway…what I was getting at… D:You are going to have to put  F:Elizabeth…E:, yes, um But ultimately misunderstandings, I feel, cause offense, I think D:Well, so what causes the misunderstanding? F:Lack of, a misunderstanding is, in my opinion a misunderstanding is  D:Lack of education… F:Not only lack of education but a closed off heart D:Well… F:And a closed off mind D:Ok, now what I mean a lack of education, too, but the reason I say that, lack of education lack of book learning.  F:Correct D:It is also lack of understanding the subject matter. So you need to have a … F:Yes D:So w --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/support

I'm your host, Anne Ganguzza, and today I'm excited to welcome podcaster, voiceover actor, speaking and recording coach, Nic Redman, to the podcast. Hey, Nic, how are you? I'm so delighted to be back. Yes, i love gosh. I've had you and also Leah from the VO Social podcast voiceover social podcast a couple of times already and now I get to have you all to myself.    0:00:31 - Nic Yeah, we don't need Leah to have a good time. We can do this on our own.    0:00:35 - Anne There we go, and absolutely So. I've been dying to talk to you about your, what I, what I feel is your specialty. You are like the guru of vocal health and I have been wanting to talk to you about that for quite some time, and I know that our boss listeners will have such value out of the wisdom that you have to share about vocal health.    So, thank you, thank you, thank you. So let's start, and actually I will say that you know, i rushed into my booth this morning and I did not warm up. And I am speaking and I want my voice to be in tip top shape and I know that everybody always says well, what you know, what vocal warm up should I do and are they, are they important and what can they do to help me get into tip top performance shape?    0:01:26 - Nic Right. So first thing in the morning there's a couple of things I think are really important and also just a dispel if you miss that kind of put people off, warm ups, i think as well. Sometimes, you know, because people are like oh, i don't have time to warm up. I don't know what to do. Like my voice is fine, I don't need to warm up Like there's. You know, I hear all of the excuses on all of the excuses.    0:01:47 - Anne I'm sure you do. It's like. It's like getting on the exercise bike. Right, i'm going to do what I'm going to do and I know it's good for me, but I don't do it. So let's talk about why we should.    0:01:57 - Nic So the thing about a warm up is it's about preparing you to be like the best you can be as a speaker. That's basically it You might be able to get. I mean, we all speak without warming up every day, like that's just life I can communicate with my husband, i can talk to my child and whatever emotion that requires at the time.    0:02:14 - Anne I can order coffee, You know I can.    0:02:16 - Nic I can do what I need to do And I could. But the thing about a warm up is when you're let's call it an elite vocal performer like all your listeners is that it's good, isn't?    0:02:25 - Anne it, i'm an elite vocal performer. Elite vocal performer? Yes, you are.    0:02:30 - Nic It's that. It's that you kind of find something extra right, and also you've sometimes got to speak in a way that is maybe slightly outside of your habitual place, like if you're in a really excited read or a really kind of sensual read or a video game or a character or something that even requires you, for example, audio book narrators. They have all of my respect.    They have to record for like thousands of hours for like days and then read another book in the evening and then do another book. I mean, like it's insane. So elite vocal performers have to find something else, and I think that something else can just be longevity and consistency, you know, and a healthy voice that will be there for you and sound the same in the morning as it does in the afternoon or the evening, or that something else could be going outside your comfort range to play a really big character, or do loads of grunts or something that's just different.    The thing about what a warm up does is helps you prepare for that. So the main things to focus on for a warm up are the fact that it's like for me, more than about just tongue twisters, and clarity, because that seems to be where a lot of people start like I need to warm up, peter Piper, peter Piper, peter Piper, peter Piper, and like sure, that's that's the first place they go. So what I advocate for because that's what I was trained as as a voice practitioner and as a performer is like a full body, holistic body, mind, breath approach. That being said, still doesn't have to take very long, and so it's all about remembering that you do have a body underneath your larynx, so that needs a little bit of like yes, yeah, i'm well done.    Can you imagine if we were all floating larynxes Like I feel like that would actually be quite nice for me because I love larynx, but I like the visual, I think yeah just a little larynx on feet floating around, just floating.    So it's about getting the body, the breath, even your head, in the game a wee bit. And that's what I love about warm ups is that you can use them. And this is my sort of, this is my current soapbox is that you know when people say, well, I don't have time to warm up, It's for it doesn't have to take a long time.    So five to 10 minutes of the right exercises, because often people are doing things that aren't the most efficient for their voice. And secondly, your warm up can actually save you time. And it does save you time Because if you take five to 10 minutes to warm up before you start, you will trip up over less words.    0:04:51 - Anne So you will have less editing or let's pick up. That's important, so important. Would you see editing, yes, please. Oh my God, i mean really, i think that's all there. I remember when I had my first you know stack, that someone prepared for me that I could apply to my audio file And I was like, oh my God, i just saved so much time. If I can save even more time on me at my editing, oh my gosh, i can do more jobs and be happier, that's for sure.    0:05:15 - Nic So it saves you time because you don't have to do like pickups because you trip over your tongue. She says tripping up over her tongue.    0:05:20 - Anne That always happens.    0:05:22 - Nic I mean the irony of all that, that's my that's me taking the Mickey out of myself. Like you know what I mean posture syndrome. Like you think you're so good at this, i'm going to show you.    0:05:33 - Anne No, you have to give a viable example.    0:05:35 - Nic So I probably the problem.    0:05:37 - Anne And that's interesting because I will say that I know that when okay, before I was a voice actor, I I taught and so I worked at a school and I would do these day long seminars or day long workshops where I would have to use my voice and I would absolutely be feeling it by the end of the day, And I'm quite sure that it is a muscle and that it needs to be worked. And especially because I do a lot of narration I don't do audio books, but I do a lot of e learning, I do a lot of corporate narration And I'm always talking to my students that it is a muscle that needs to be worked And it gosh. It would really help to not trip up so much. Right, I'm always say be more efficient in the booth, So you have to spend the less time editing.    Yeah, that way, get it right in the booth, and so I can totally see that. And I will say that sometimes I'm doing other things like marketing, or I'm coaching or doing other things, and by the time I get to those auditions late at night because I think my, i think all of my agents are in cahoots with one another because they send me these auditions late at night at the end of the day And I am so tired And I will notice sometimes my jaw gets a little bit sore And I'm like there's got to be something here that I'm doing that is not right. That's making my jaw sore, like I'm holding tension somehow somewhere in my jaw.    0:06:56 - Nic Yeah, there's loads of different things that we can play around with to sort of minimize those little niggles that creep up, because sometimes those niggles, over a period of time, become something that's much more sort of Much more of an issue, you know. So, yeah, we can talk to you about John, we can have a little release, but just before we do it, in terms of the warm-up and the why, yeah, save your time, because the tongue trip ups also. Save your time because and, if you like, do some exercises to release tension. Like you said, the jaw, the tongue, the lips, the Throat, the body get the breath moving. Play with your range as well, so you get lots of vocal color and expression in there. Then, when you get to your script and you are thinking about What you've got to say and the lines are there and who you've got to communicate with and all that kind of stuff, all you have to worry about is the words and the person that you're talking to.    You don't have to think about your voice, right you don't have to think about being interesting and changing color and doing weird things with pitch and weird, strange things with the prosody To make it sound interesting. Because that's one of my bug bears sometimes with voiceovers is I feel like they're trying too hard to make Their voices sound interesting, yes, instead of focusing on the listener. So like what? I love about a warm-up is that when you give someone really a really simple warm-up, it prepares them and frees everything up so that their voice goes wherever their intention needs it to in order to communicate the message.    0:08:14 - Anne So I don't see your time. I love that and I and I love the fact that that you mentioned that People they tend to to try to sound like you know, or predict what people want them to sound like. So they're trying to do all these Like vocal acrobatics when in reality, we just need to be, we have to have intention and we and we need that intention to be able to Not betray us when we want to express an emotion. In that, and I feel that, yes, having not to have to listen or worry about your voice, you know, not necessarily being there for you, i think is is amazing. So I love how you've turned it into not like something that's like, oh god, i have to do a vocal warm-up into how it really truly helps your performance and I think, really to be a better actor, right Yeah 100%.    0:09:03 - Nic It's just prepping all the bit so that they're go where you need them to go without you thinking about them.    That's what you know the right kind of muscle memory and prepping everything and also, like my approach is about making it like fun and interesting and nice. So I'm making it quick and easy and something that sort of slots into your routine and can become a habit. And the other thing I said it came across recently as a bit of a warm-up is useful because theory is that, because it works on the body And the breath, and I always advocate a wee mindful minute before you start, just to focus on what your body needs and what your breath feels like it needs And how your voice is feeling is.    It is actually almost like a wee bit of a mindfulness practice or a mental health practice as well. So if you're someone who likes a bit of meditation or body work or breath work in the morning, You can incorporate all that into your warm-up and then you're getting like two or three birds with one stone.    0:09:52 - Anne Yeah yeah, and I think, in addition to the vocal work, the breath work too is so important And that is part of a good vocal warm-up, i assume in your, in your, in your recommendations, because I feel like for me, i, you know, a while ago I had a health issue and had surgery and I wasn't able to breathe as well because it's surgery in my chest area And I noticed that I had to start learning how to really breathe and take Diaphragmatic breaths, like big, deep breaths, and the really cool thing about that is that, yes, i healed, but also it allowed me to really understand how powerful breathing is to my performance and how power especially when you're doing long Format and when the copy isn't necessarily written pretty or written well, yeah, when the copies all over the place and you need to be able to execute that effortlessly That is where a good, strong breath is so empowering, really truly empowering, more so than I ever imagined.    So in a way, it was good that I kind of learned that I needed to breathe and how much power it could really give me for my performance.    0:11:03 - Nic Yeah, I think one of the things that excites me about breath is Sorry.    0:11:12 - Anne I thought maybe yeah, yeah, well, you know, that's what happened, he's fine Breath yes, yes I love working on breath.    0:11:23 - Nic It's one of my favorite things, particularly with voiceovers, because there are some like interesting misconceptions and hangovers from like earlier breath Dementorologies in voice world that that make breathing for that make people who are doing voiceover sort of have to seem like they have to work A bit harder because they don't quite understand what's going on with the breath. Sure, so what? so what I work with in terms of breath is I I don't I kind of get people to forget about the diaphragm completely.    Okay because every breath is diaphragmatic, right, it's the primary muscle of breathing. So you can't, you can't not breathe with your diaphragm. So it's kind of a semantics with the language in one thing.    0:12:02 - Anne But well, maybe I was, maybe I was meaning deep breath. Yeah, exactly, okay, Okay.    0:12:07 - Nic Yeah, so like got it. So what I might? when, when people come to me and they say I need to breathe from or with they're using my diaphragm, what I find they're trying they're trying to, they're trying to do it rather than letting it happen, and what that leads to is people trying to breathe through their belly or Deep and all that kind of stuff, and that leads to engagement of muscles that don't need to be used. Ah, so so what I advocate for and tend to explore is Just is release and flow and movement, because Big breaths are great for, you know, long phrases sometimes and For, sometimes for powerful stuff, if that's what you need. But also, similarly, breath is as much about knowing that sometimes you only need a little breath or you only need a medium-sized breath, because actually what we need is the right amount of breath for the sentence We've got to say no more, no less, and that in itself is sort of an interesting skill to play with in a choir.    So all the work I do around breath is like Diver from be gone Okay, and just work on release of the belly, a little bit of gentle engagement on the out breath and on the voice And just understanding what you're capable of. Really breath like my big love, love, love breath.    0:13:19 - Anne I. So that just that intrigues me, because I I'm always talking about when, when you have that long run-on sentence right, and a Voice talent doesn't necessarily anticipate it, and they run out of breath at the weird part, right at the part where it doesn't sound natural. I'm always trying to get them to kind of you know, read ahead, understand where you might need to breathe in order to make that sound natural. How does that come into play with your breathing?    0:13:48 - Nic Yeah, so. So my thing is making sure that the breath system is responsive enough and free enough to breathe quickly when those little top ups are needed quickly and easily and silently, and silently When those little top ups are needed, because I know that often in voiceover there are various things that get in the way of feeling like you know how much type of breath you even need Right. Or you know you're halfway through ascending and you realize it's four times longer than you thought it was going to be Right, absolutely Right absolutely So.    there's a really interesting thing about breath whereby, when we're talking in conversation to our mates, right, we don't run out of breath. Our body knows how much breath we need for the thought, but when you're working with other people's thoughts, in voiceover you don't know where they fucking end Like in.    Some of them are, like you say, not written very well, so you could be halfway through and you suddenly realize it's like loads longer than it needs to be. But ultimately, as long as we're like engaged and connected to the words and what we have to say, that ascending is going to sort of be as long as it wants. As long as our breath is free and we know which bits to release when we need the breath to come in to top up for us, and you keep that intention of that thought in the background until the end, you can sort of breathe as much as you want. The reason I think this is important and crucial is because sometimes voiceovers push, push, push, push right to the end of a thought, and then everything gets a little bit kind of like tense.    0:15:10 - Anne Yeah, and it's not good for your breath and it feels horrible And it doesn't sound connected. It sounds like, oh my God, I'm going to run out of breath. Yeah, And the list? it doesn't jar.    0:15:19 - Nic It's not nice for the listener. anyway, sure. But, us as, as social listeners, we are used to hearing really long meandering thoughts with our friends and our on our family. Like we're used to people starting a thought and not really knowing where it's going, and then they breathe a bit to top up and then they go off in another direction And we stay with them because we're interested and because their intention is true, like they want to tell us the thing right.    So the theory is sort of the same, with voiceover for me, that the sentence can be as long as a sentence in fact needs to be As long as you are, like, committed to communicating that sentence and the breath system behind it is free to respond and be flexible and and fill it when you need to, then that's okay, so, yeah, so I work a lot with helping people understand how to get the breath in nice and, quickly and silently, how to support the breath when they need to. Also how to know where the point is Sure That they need to top up.    0:16:11 - Anne That makes sense, like the organization of the thoughts.    0:16:14 - Nic Yeah, like we speak.    0:16:15 - Anne I always when I'm, when I'm talking to my students, i'm like look, we don't. You don't hear us breathe when we're talking to to one another. We're basically breathing before we start talking, maybe after we finish talking, and then where there's commas or intended commas, and so that's typically where I say you've got to figure out where that breath goes. If it's super long, just kind of organize the thought and then speak that thought. I mean, that's, if you're in that scene, you'll speak the thought without necessarily, you know, running out of breath in the middle of it. Now I'm so conscious of my breathing right now I'm like it's beautiful And you're doing great because, look, you're alive.    0:16:51 - Nic Yeah, right, that's why you're alive and you're making voices perfect. Yeah, i interviewed Barbara Housman for my for the voice quits podcast one of my podcasts And she's this remarkable voice practitioner I have a massive. I've worked with her on and off for years and I train with her at drama school and stuff And she's amazing And she always says well, this is what she said to me was because there used to be a thought in kind of drama training that was like one breath, one thought, one breath one thought.    And then you look at Shakespeare and the thoughts are like 19 sentences long.    0:17:20 - Anne This is never going to work.    0:17:22 - Nic So she reframed it for me and she said it's not about it being one breath, It's about it being one thought.    So like I can keep that thought going and breathe wherever I need to, because breath is part of the communication as well. Now, i know for some types of voiceover you have to take the breath out and it's like fine, although I feel like with the event, like this AI nod. So this is going on. We need the breath because it's real and human. But that's just, that's just me. But, like you can, as long as you, as long as you really know that you need to say the words, you need to communicate the thing and you need to affect the person listening, you can let the breath come in whenever you want to, as long as it's very easy. So so that's what I work on. I work a lot on making the breath easy, responsive, habitual and kind of instinctive. I try and take people back a lot to noticing breath completely at rest, and then we build up from there and then we build on sound and then we build on thought lengths and things like that.    0:18:16 - Anne So, yeah, love it, wow, breath by breath. So so, in addition to breath being incredibly important when we're talking about performance in an extreme emotion or extreme, let's say, in video games, or we're having something that's highly emotional, where we have to probably utilize our voice more than a normal conversation level, what are your tips for helping? like you know, i don't want to scream the night before I have to record, maybe because I don't want to hurt my voice, or, you know, a lot of times people are like well, don't, you know, don't cough, like try to like clear your breath, or like gently, and there's so many different things that people tell you to do to kind of preserve your voice What sort, what tips do you have for?    0:19:04 - Nic that. So for extreme sessions, definitely a full body warm up And I would also put in place some sort of mid session resets. So two or three minutes of release exercises for the body and the vocal tract, so the throat, the tongue, the lips and the jaw and things every every, you know, half an hour or so. Just ask for a couple of minutes just to reset things so that if any strain has taken place or if any tension is creeping in, you can reset things and release things a little bit. So that's really useful.    Always hydrate, of course, at least the day before, if not, like the week before. Can you hydrate too much? Oh, my god, yeah, you can have. Okay, too much of a good thing. People get a bit obsessed with, like the fact that it needs to be water And they carry these water things around that like petrol cans. Like I got eight litres of water, yeah, yeah, that's like my arm would fall off a and be I'd be, i'm waiting all the time anyway, like the last thing. It is eight litres of water. So the the the general guideline at the moment is Is one mil per calorie burned right per day.    0:20:12 - Anne Is sufficient to keep you hydrated.    0:20:14 - Nic So for for a female that's like 1500, for a male That's about 2000, depending on your exercise. So if you exercise more you might need a little bit less.    Right you're lazy, alfakar, and you're on the sofa all the time, then you'd probably be fine, but it's also about your diet as well. So if again, if you are a Raw food vegan living in a rain forest, you're probably gonna need you're probably getting more water from your food and hydration from your food than someone who, like, lives in the city and eats frozen pizza all day.    But right so it's a whole list, completely holistic thing, like its environment, it's food, it's the fluids you take in. all fluids count towards systemic hydration, so that's hydration of the whole body. So anything you drink that's wet will help you hydrate and counts that even coffee I was gonna.    0:21:07 - Anne I was just gonna say so. I have to have my cup of coffee every morning. You know I have about one, one cup, and people are always like don't drink coffee, it will hot D You know it will, you know it'll dry you out. And I'm like, well, i always chase it with a lot of water.    So I mean that's oh good, that for me it worked. So I really do. I mean, i try not to drink a ton of coffee before a session in the morning. But here's a question Sometimes these days, these days, i utilize the morning hours because my voice just tends to be a little bit lower Before it's warmed up to actually do some voiceover work. Is there a way that you can warm up so that you can maintain that kind of a? and what is that phenomenon? What is that phenomenon where your voice is lower in the morning typically?    0:21:55 - Nic so my hypothesis for this is that you're more released, so the vocal folds to. To change pitch, i e go higher and lower the vocal folds Get longer and thinner to go high Okay and shorter and fatter to go low, and it's also about and then they vibrate. Have different number of oscillations per second right because of the size. The. The higher and lower you, the higher you go. This slightly more stretched, intense the vocal folds get. Mm-hmm the lower they are, the more slack they are. Okay, yep, been asleep on lion flap with your lovely natural breath, you know, not worrying about anything.    All your muscles are released, your throat's released and rested, and lovely, i would imagine in the morning your vocal folds are just a little bit fatter and more released. Ah, no offense, look at those fat folds.    0:22:50 - Anne Vocal foes. Hey, I don't mind having fat vocal folds and I sometimes people pay me for those. For those fat vocal folds, show me a fire in the morning, yeah great, it's great, so I think that's what it is. And then the more you talk during the day, mm-hmm the more your body ticks on.    0:23:04 - Nic A wee bit of tension, the more your larynx takes on a wee bit of the tongue, everything takes on a bit more tension, so it's slightly harder to get those folds to that more relaxed.    0:23:13 - Anne God, the fat place and is there a way to get them back to the fat place outside of? I'm gonna say vocal placement Right, right to do that, or tension release, really Yeah.    0:23:24 - Nic So I'm interesting gentle exercises That encourage a bit releasing the muscles around the larynx and in the vocal tract So you can do tongue release, jaw release, yawns to open and release the the back of the throat a little bit. Okay, Yeah gentle kind of rehab style, glides up and down your pitch on Whatever. A particular semi-occluded vocal tract exercise works best for you.    So semi-occluded exercises are exercises that utilize a sound that sort of partially closes the mouth, so a classic one that everyone knows is a little For some people a little is quite a lot of effort and not the right one for them other versions might be a gentle, puffy kind of Signed and or another one might be just a puffy th, so So, hmm, kind of sounds create a particular acoustic environment in a throat that allows vocal full vibration with minimal input.    0:24:22 - Anne Mmm, and that's a way to release tension. Yes, oh, okay, so do you win? Okay, so You, you work with students independently on vocal exercises, health preparation for. so take me through like what's a what's a typical with you, like, how do you assess my vocal health and my vocal performance? Okay, or just tell me what. you don't have to take me through it. I'm just don't describe what. what's the process of that?    0:24:57 - Nic I I do a lot of ninja listening, so, uh, if the first time you have with me, you're probably like why are we chatting so much and not like just getting started And then I'm like I've been listening to you.    0:25:07 - Anne Uh, but I talk to people. Have you been listening to me so far?    0:25:15 - Nic Like now.    0:25:15 - Anne I'm really piqued my interest.    0:25:18 - Nic So yeah, i do a little. Uh, i don't know if you have Sherlock Holmes, the uh program, like the British program with Benedict Cumberbatch over in America, but he does these like really amazing scans where he looks at somebody and does nose. Everything about him is like so do a cheeky weekend of Sherlock Holmes scan Like voice assessment with that's what part of my training is is being able to listen and go.    Oh, i hear this, i hear that, i hear the other. Um, so I do that while we're having to be, chat and make a few notes. I also collaborate that with why you've come. So you know, someone may have come going. I'm losing my voice and I don't know why. Sure, And I will listen and go. Well, that's this, or someone will go. I'm losing my voice And it's because X, y, z And I will go. I don't think it is actually. I think it's this, or or I'll go. Yes, you're right but, let's all try this.    So so it's a bit of a collaborative process And I I talk a lot about you know what the needs are, uh, what they expect from it, you know how long we've got together that kind of thing, and we just sort of piece together a bit of a strategy. It's very explorative and it's very bespoke and back and forth And I describe it like kind of sadly as a journey. It's like a journey you know, like.    so we like I don't do one to one's really anymore, i do two session, quick top ups or six session kind of packages, because we start together in one place And sometimes by session three we've actually realized it's something completely different and that's often can be a bit disarming or exciting or interesting and you just have to, as a voice, as a voice technique coach, you just have to respond to that. You know I have to teach what's in the room or the zoom.    0:26:49 - Anne Sure That makes sense In front of me Same with any coaching really.    0:26:53 - Nic Um. So you know there's no one size fits all. Right, it's a very back and forwards process. Sometimes I give you stuff I said go away working that for a couple of weeks, give me a shout, how's it going, and we go. Well, this is working. That's not working. And you know, we, we assess it really as we go along. Um, so it's a. It's a really lovely, lovely process. I love one to ones because it's so bespoke. And at the moment I tend to get a lot of people who are like I've tried this, i've tried this coach or that coach or the other coach, and we still can't work out what this is. So, um, and sometimes that's nothing to do with the coach, it's just the learning place the person is in, or you know what's going on in their life.    Maybe they weren't open to receiving certain information you know, but you know some. Often it takes a wee while to find the right coach for you and stuff, and you know people come to me and maybe go someone else, like like that's just what happens, um, but yeah.    I do get a lot of. what's this weird noise My nose makes, or I can't work out what's happening on this cluster of signs, All that kind of or why am I? you know? quite specific stuff. I'm not the moment, uh, Mike, specific stuff, which is what my book's about. It's like, it's it's voice for Mike users.    0:27:59 - Anne Oh, so let's talk about that, because you do, you have a, you have a new book out, i do. And let's talk about that, because I was just going to ask you about um for being on the mic. What are your tips for being on the mic? So this is phenomenal that you've got a new book out. I do.    0:28:15 - Nic It's called on the mic. Okay, straight forward.    0:28:19 - Anne There you go.    0:28:20 - Nic It's called on the mic and it's voice training for voiceover artists, podcasters, speakers and presenters, so basically anybody who uses a microphone, because that seems to be the people that come to me Sure. Sure, absolutely. And yeah it's been really it's been a really interesting and exciting journey, kind of consolidating all my knowledge into what I'm doing, Into that sort of a place, Um, I think, for there are a couple of things with Mike. Speaking is number one. Um, there's a different type of energy that's needed.    So and this again, this can differ from me sat here in Mabouth with this mic to somebody stood on a stage doing an expert speaking gig, Um, so it's about understanding the energy that you need for the space that you're in and the breath that you might need for the space that you're in and I think also as well the style of the delivery is really interesting and how you can use the right kind of voice warm up exercises to get you to a particular space. So if you have to sound conversational for your podcast, there are certain things you can do that are good for that.    If you need to get ramped up and deal with your adrenaline to host a conference, then there are certain things you can do for that. So the whole point of the book is to like go through a lot of scenarios, go through the voice training process that I advocate, which is body, breath, sound speech, and just end up with a big fat, a toolkit of things that you can piece together in a way that works for whatever mic context you need.    0:29:44 - Anne I love it. I love it Now. Is this your first book?    0:29:48 - Nic Yes, I mean, I think I'd written Instagram Instagram captions. I was about it Right.    0:29:53 - Anne Right, well, i know I feel like I've written a ton of blogs and I know you've got a great blog out there too. Um, and I'm part of your newsletter, so, um, yeah, so that's so. It's very exciting. So, your first book, and what was that process like? Did it take? like I I'm, because I, of course, you know I'm, i'm thinking about it, and of course everybody says, and you need a book. So, um, writing a book to me, i'm just, i have so much respect because I know how much time well, i know how much time it must take, so what was the process like for you?    0:30:26 - Nic Um, I really enjoyed it, actually really enjoyed it. The hardest bit was starting like with everything, Right, i did a lot of procrastinating. I did a lot of having my whether you believe in it as not imposter syndrome on my shoulder going what are you doing? Who do you think you are? Um, so I did a lot of inviting my imposter syndrome to sit with me while I while I explored what was happening, i was like come on then.    0:30:48 - Anne We'll do it together.    0:30:50 - Nic Um, as soon as I started each little writing session, I I was great, I loved it, I mean you get to the end of the first draft and then you're like what the hell is this? So, actually, what was more exciting and interesting and fulfilling was the editing process and playing around with it. So my advice is set we, set we taught. Set we targets, we regular targets that are achievable for you. Don't edit as you go, cause I got caught up in that and it took me longer, longer than I wanted to to get to the end of the first draft, but just get a first draft done And you could let you.    and, interestingly, what happened for me was it started as one book and by the time I'd finished the draft it was another book. So you know it sort of had to go back and and, um, change things up a wee bit. But I actually really enjoyed it.    I feel, very proud, but also, you know it's scary, it is a scary thing putting it out there, but you just have to remember who you're writing it for. You know I spent a lot of time as well, you know, basking in the shadows of the greats who've come before me And like there are so many incredible practitioners out there who I still learn from daily and whose books I read and who I just think are remarkable. And I did do a lot of. what if they think my book's terrible? and my business coach was like, who are you writing the book for? And I was like well, my clients. and they're like so does it? like I know what matters to you.    0:32:13 - Anne Do they think you're terrible? Probably not. No, do they care?    0:32:17 - Nic No, they have been asking you for a book, So they're going to be really excited. And do you think those people who you think are amazing are going to look at you and go, ugh, gross, you wrote a book. Or are they going to go?    0:32:29 - Anne that's well done, we've been there actually About time, right About time, there we go, fantastic.    0:32:34 - Nic Yeah, i've had some lovely. I reached out to a few mentors to help me, like, edit a little bit and they were really complimentary, so I'm really pleased with it. I feel it is the first one.    0:32:47 - Anne Well, I am so excited I'm going to rush out and get it. So how can bosses get this book?    0:32:54 - Nic Yeah, so it is on my website. If you go to onthemikbookcom Okay, Onthemikbookcom it should take you to the page we can buy. Perfect, Actually, it'll be. It's on Amazon.    0:33:09 - Anne And it'll be on Amazon as well, yeah, just do that Fantastic. And how can people get in touch with you in addition to buying your book? How can they get in touch with you if they want to work with you?    0:33:21 - Nic Oh well, probably my website, Nicrebinvoicecom. That's probably the best thing I'm also on the island, stern tic-toc and all that kind of nonsense too. So you can probably find me anyway by putting Nic Redman in Perfect perfect.    0:33:35 - Anne Well, Nic, it has been a pleasure. Congratulations. I'm very excited I'm going out there and getting a book now because I and I actually I want to be contacting you because I do have some questions about how maybe you can custom work with me with some of my voice questions that I have. So thank, you so?    much again. Yes, absolutely, bosses. Do you have a local nonprofit that's close to your heart? Hello Terrorizers,Today, I bring you - out of character and out of canon - the very first Tiny Terrors Fan Showcase, don't worry this is only a working title and snazzier branding will be coming when next we attempt to crack open the twisted minds of those we call terrorizers online, in a more organized and formal fan showcase. But for now I bring you The Tiny Terrors Fan Showcase ™ - and it is just that, a showcase - not a contest.I have selected 3 stories, not based on a numerical value denoting whether or not they are good, but three examples I felt showed the writer felt joy in their creation of twisted creatures. Thanks to all the terrorizers, the exchange is… thriving…. And evolving… Unlike the exchange we hear our protagonists interact with, ours has become digital…. Still lo-fi, amateurish…. charming - but digital. This showcase is a way of giving back, for your devotion to the growth and prosperity of the exchange. Say to the Lord: "My refuge and fortress, the God in whom I trust." C: Be with me, Lord, ... D: No evil shall befall you, no pain come near, for his angels stand close by your side, Guarding you always and bearing you gently, watching over your life. C: Be with me, Lord, ... D: Those who cling to the Lord live secure in his love, lifted high those who trust in his name. Call on the Lord, he will never forsake you, He will bring you salvation and joy. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. For this reason, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to take a stand on the evil day and, after you have done everything, to stand. Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Intro Background Mystique, Raven Darkholme, created by Chris Claremont & Dave Cockrum in Ms. Marvel #16 (April 1978) To this day, Mystique's true origins have never been revealed The earliest stories place her around 1900, where she was presenting as male and in a relationship with Irene Adler (Destiny), an obvious reference to Sherlock Holmes While undercover, she had a short fling with Sabretooth, which led to a child Graydon Creed - despite having 2 mutant parents, Graydon is a normal human who comes to resent all mutants - he grows up to become a powerful politician before being assassinated by a time-traveling version of Mystique #BecauseComics She is later seduced by Azazel., and becomes pregnant with a baby that she abandoned at birth - the baby would be taken in and named Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler Side note - Claremont intended for Mystique & Destiny to be Nightcrawler's parents, but the Code wouldn't allow a lesbian relationship at the time Encounters a young runaway girl from Mississippi, and after Destiny foresees that she will become important to them, she takes in the young Rogue and acts as her foster mother She leads a version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and trains Rogue to join them and attack Ms. Marvel - Rogue ends up absorbing Carol's powers, memories, and personality for a time #BecauseComics Turns the Brotherhood “legit” as Freedom Force, and they work for the government, while still clashing with the X-Men - during this time, Irene is killed, and this has a serious impact on her Joins X-Factor under duress, but after some time she escapes and flees to Europe, where she becomes a top fashion model Joins the X-Men as a shapeshifter named Foxx, and attempts to seduce Gambit so she can break up Gambit & Rogue and set up Rogue with another mutant - the ploy fails, but she joins the team on a probationary basis - Kurt says he needs time to process, though, which she gives him Works with Gambit & the Marauders to betray Mister Sinister in the fallout of M-Day - Logan is sent to kill her, and he severely wounds her, but does not finish the job She is later actually killed by Logan after she had been posing as Professor X for Norman Osborn's Dark X-Men She was revived by the Hand, and posed as Dazzler, who was a mutant liaison for SHIELD in Madripoor Had a tender moment with Rogue before her wedding to Gambit Serves on the Quiet Council of Krakoa as a Winter representative Issues - Piercing the veil Can't really be herself because of the hatred towards mutants Always distant in her relationships - rare exceptions, like Irene & Rogue Inner self-acceptance isn't always reflected in outer appearance, which is difficult Break (37:27) Plugs for Take a Knee for Marvel vs. DC, Into the Knight, and Chris Claremont Treatment (38:42) In-universe - Become emotions, not people Out of universe Skit (49:34) ***knock at the door*** Come in -***Mrs Issues*** Hey, just stopping by Oh! Um…usually you text me, but ok, I thought you were my next patient -No problem, I figured I hadn't been to your office in a while and I know you've had some rough days. Thanks *pause* I thought you had class tonight. -I do, that's why I brought someone along with me to cheer you up; plus you can keep watch for a bit. I'll be right back but I have to get my stuff from the car. ***door closes*** As always. But where's -***Door opens***Daughter Issues*** Daddy! *pause* Ok Getthef**kout -WHAT? Why? ***fake crying*** Seriously get out or identify yourself or I'm calling the police -***some sort of morphing sound, now Mystique***  M: well you don't have to be so rude, I thought you were a professional. D Professional enough to know my own daughter hasn't called me “daddy” in years. Her choice, not mine. And I guess I can't call the police on my own patient if I haven't given them a chance to explain. Don't expect me to be cheery after a stunt like that. - M You're perceptive, I'll grant you that. But now we have a problem. D I know what my problem is. What's yours? M *sigh* Let's be real. You can't fight me, and I don't necessarily want to fight you. But you're valuable. More than you know. D You were going to kidnap me?!  M *laughs* No, nothing as dramatic as that. This was supposed to be a stealth operation. You have information. I need it. D I've already been down that rabbit hole. Secure encryption, magical wards, along with undisclosed offshore servers have made sure I don't make the same mistake ever again.  M Doom really hooked you up, then. D HOW…*deep breath*...you are masterful, you know that? Always seeking more information, more leverage.  M: It's my currency, it's how I get ahead. D: But do you need that anymore? You don't come across as someone who wants to be at the beck and call of someone else, but you also find ways to put yourself as the center of attention, even if no one else knows it yet. I know those aren't mutually exclusive, but that can get complicated very fast.  M: My life is complicated? Hmmm, I would have never thought that in a hundred years…no wait, that is EXACTLY what I've spent every day for the last hundred-plus years thinking about. I have enough baggage to fill an entire airport. I just choose which ones to pick up on various occasions. D: So what set of circumstances would lead you to add me to the mix? It's obvious you don't want therapy.  M: I won't divulge my secrets if you won't divulge yours. D: This isn't a negotiation.  M: Au contraire. All conversations are negotiations. Most people don't apply the proper context. Or pressure. D: This must be so difficult for you. You're talking to a person that's not of your world, nothing to offer that you couldn't weasel out in some other way, and yet, this is the path you chose. You find me weak, but interesting, and I don't know why.  M: *pause* Are you fishing, or trying to sound profound?  D: Why not both? My point is, you seem to set up your own challenges without respect to the person, or the emotional consequences even for yourself. I'll give you a hypothetical. What if you learn of someone you DIDN'T want to have on your radar, and they hunt you down after they destroy me? Is that risk worth it?  M: It wouldn't be the first time that someone else gets hurt in the crossfire.  D: But what if it's someone you actually care about? Are you really going to throw away the opportunity to improve a lasting relationship for the sake of an odd job or morbid curiosity? What if I could offer you that chance and the other person is willing to talk about it…with you and me?  M: You can't make promises like that. D: Never said I could. But I can try. That's all I'm saying.  M: I know for a fact that you aren't a…family therapist.  D: Who said it was family?  M: *pause* I…  D: *snaps fingers* YOU were fishing! You didn't know! This was a hunch, wasn't it?  M: *sigh* There aren't that many psychiatrists that delve into…our type, for lack of a better term. Word spreads fast. I have the background on your services, but things were locked out, as you so eloquently put it, before I could get any good dirt. But still…if there was a chance… D: There's no alternative mission…no monetary gain? You really just want…hmmm…I meant what I said. No guarantees. This may get messy.  M: As always. So…you know, I may have wanted someone that is NOT considered a person close to me. If I disclose it, would you be able to set up someone like that, too? D: Nope Nope Nope.  This is a one-time deal. You get one person, I contact on my time. If they say no, you don't get another chance. Understood?  M: Clearly. Doesn't mean I will stop trying. I have more on you, you know. Think about it. Every person you see in your life could be me, doctor. A. Ny. One. D: And every person you meet is an opportunity for you to stop looking at them as a puppet to mimic, and engage them for who you really are. I guess we'll both have doubts.  M: You are learning to negotiate better. Keep at it, and I might consider this…therapeutic. ***for end of show*** No matter how complicated life can be, you'll always have control of your own mystique - M:  ***morphing sound*** Oh do you, now? Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Grab your guns, we're going hunting for monsters with Elsa Bloodstone! What will die faster: the things she squares off with or her family legacy? Listen now to find out! Intro Last few days of Podchaser Reviews4Good So Wizard - Ask them Anything? More like ask them why their show is so consistently amazing. Background (3:15) Elsa Bloodstone created by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Michael Lopez in Bloodstone #1 (Dec. 2001) Daughter of legendary monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, Elsa was raised to follow in her father's footsteps Ulysses was a taskmaster who showed Elsa little affection, and instead focused solely on training her to be an effective killer - this drove a wedge between them, and when Ulysses was dying, Elsa refused to put him out of his misery despite his request When he died, she inherited the Bloodstone, which gave her increased durability and strength Was a founding member of the Nextwave team, which battled Dirk Anger & HATE, and also blew things up just for funsies Joined the Defenders for a spell to help them fight demons, during which she battled Deadpool & Elektra when they tried to steal the Bloodstone Became a teacher at the Braddock Academy, where her younger brother Cullen was enrolled Then she joined the Dr. Doom-led Avengers during AXIS In the aftermath of Secret Wars, Elsa is on Battleworld - she encounters a young girl with no memory, who she names Shuttup - she and Shuttup are followed by a mysterious figure, who turns out to be an alternate universe version of Ulysses, who is hunting down all forms of the Bloodstone - Elsa realizes Shuttup is a manifestation of her lost childhood, and together they kill Ulysses and merge with the stone - Elsa uses the power of the stone to resurrect Ulysses and give him a second chance Took a young Inhuman boy named Kei Kawade under her wing, as he had the power to summon and control monsters - once he grew strong enough to control his powers, she bid him farewell Next fought a beast that infected her Bloodstone hand, and with the help of Deadpool was able to recover - he took the infected stone and then sacrificed himself, destroying the monsters they were fighting and curing the infection in the process - Elsa looked after Deadpool's head while it regenerated Recently learned she and Cullen had a half-sister named Lyra, who was born a long time ago and sent into another dimension by Ulysses - she came crashing back to Earth Issues (9:49) Wasn't really raised as much as she was trained Not a fan of her calling, but she has decided it will end with her (17:42) Related to that, keeps people at a distance to focus on the job (24:31) Break (34:41) Plugs for BetterHelp, ODPH, and Cullen Bunn Treatment (36:25) In-universe - Follow Elsa to get her comfortable with decision making without massive consequence Out of universe - Child soldier analogue (38:20) Skit (feat. Rebecca from Into the Knight) (45:38)  DOC: Hello Elsa, I'm Dr. Issues. ELSA: Hello, doctor. D: So what can I help you with? E: Not much. You don't seem like the kind of bloke that can handle a weapon. D: Ummmm…no? Why would you even go there? E: Figured this was some sort of setup. Nobody wants to talk to someone like me out of the blue unless they've had some big problems in their life. D: It's usually the other way around. My job is to help people through their own big problems. I'm not trying to foist my issues on to theirs. E: Could've fooled me with the name.  D: I honestly hoped that no one would look at it like that, but…we're off topic. What can a mental health and wellness professional, such as myself, help you with? E: Perhaps you could get in the heads of some of these horrible creatures and distract them so my job gets easier. D: *pause* You really think that you don't don't need help with anything? E: You sound like a hammer looking for a nail. D: I've had plenty of defensive patients before, but you're trying to sound…smug? Cool? I'm not sure what, but I'm not going to ignore it. E: You do that. I'll just sit back and polish my gun while you keep fishing…that's not a metaphor or anything *clicking sound representing a gun hammer* D: So…subtle, or not so subtle intimidation. You're a pro at this. E: *pause* Now you're REALLY trying hard to get me to talk about something. I'm not going to waste your time. I got the big stuff out of my life, and I don't sweat the small stuff anymore. I'm fine. D: I'll have to do this the old fashioned primary doctor way then…any medical problems? E: Nope. I healed them. D: What did you heal? E: Not much, just my whole arm. Had to get it back. D: You…you grew back your arm? E: No, don't be bonkers! It was…magic, basically. Damn, if you don't know anything about that stuff, that sounds crazy. D: Your…pendant? Just gave a glow. What's up with that? E: It does that sometimes. What of it? D: You just described a massive event in your life, talked about magic, and you have a glowing rock on your neck. You won't talk about anything when I ask if there's a problem, but you tried to get me to sound like I'd be some sort of sidekick. With all due respect…something ain't right. E: You sound like you're trying to make me out to be a trickster. I'm as straight a shot as they come. Don't try to use any psychological ploys on me, or I'll paint the bloody wall with your skull. D: I'm a straight shooter, too…you're being vague on purpose. The only real clue is your reactions and fragments of what you give. Do you realize how hard that makes it to formulate an assessment and plan? E: *irritated* Fragments? YOU have fragments? You don't know what it's like to have your own memories as fragments! I'm not being coy when I stop you. I just figured stuff out for myself, and I don't want to have to go over it again with some random stranger that thinks I'm some bird trying to get sympathy. D: I'm not that judgemental…you said some loaded statements just now, maybe we can unpack E: *Interrupting* What did I just tell you? Keep going with that and I'll show how this baby unloads *gun cocking* D: Am I a monster to you, then? E: *pause* *sigh* No, of course not.  D: But I'm representing some sort of threat to you and you're walling yourself off because you can't attack it head on like you usually would. What is it? E: All I'm saying is, I dealt with him already. It's done. D: I see…well, I don't really. But whatever it is, I'm glad you've moved on. So what's next in your life? E: I never know that. It's whatever gets thrown at me. Comes with the territory, better or worse. D: So take charge. You obviously have weapons, guile, and bravado, that's enough to carry you through, right?  E: Innit? *pause* Emm, wait? I know what the words mean, but you're stringing them together like it's a plan or something. Hell if I know any of that. D: *snaps fingers* is THAT why you want me involved? To help figure out your future plans? Maybe not as spontaneous, but also not as traumatic, right? E: That…might make sense if you didn't sound so much like a doctor. D: Comes with the territory. E: If that weren't truly witty, I honestly WOULD have blasted you for that comment. I'm not into analyzing, alright? D: You don't have to be. I can let you know when something is out of sorts from what I hear and observe. Does that make sense? E: *deadpan* you just described analyzing. D: You know, you remind me of the stereotype of a surgeon. Usually right, sometimes wrong, but never in doubt. A chance to cut is a chance to cure. Interventions that make a difference. I'm begging you though, please consider that other techniques may be beneficial. I'm not trying to sound mushy or woo woo, but if you ignore emotions now, they just come out later in unexpected ways. I don't have to know YOUR history to know that from my own. But be my guest, blast away at evil all you want, hoping to blast away your pain. Or do you want someone to point out opportunities for a better quality of life? E: *sigh* It's just that, well, with what I do, there's not a lot of time for processing or thinking about all that stuff. There's a job, so I do it. I'm trying to do it better than my father, and since I'm talking to you, that's already an improvement. My goal is to make it so no one else has to endure what I have. If that means keeping my head down until it's done, then so be it. I can handle it.  D: I'm sure you can. I only want you to find as much joy and peace in that process as much as you endure the pain and suffering. That's blasphemous to those who have only learned the obstacle as the way.  E: Well, if you can't crack a smile while putting bullets in the head of mindless brain-eaters, then you're deader inside than they are. I mean, I wouldn't keep doing this if it wasn't at least somewhat entertaining. S'not all bad, I suppose. But I guess I can try to find more of the joy in things while I'm at it. D: Careful, or I might smile back at you to let you know that I enjoy what I do and find things outside of my job to grant me strength and love so it doesn't consume all of my waking hours, no matter the demand. E: Well, that hits close to home! D: I'm glad SOMETHING finally did. How about this; instead of doing all of the retrospective stuff, you get the chance to regale me with your latest adventure, and I just comment on what's happened to fill in the possible emotional gaps? Think of a spotter for a sniper E: More of a shotgun person myself, but I get the point. OK, Doc, you got yourself a deal. Now if you'll excuse me, I got word of some pretty nasty buggers not too far from here, so I'm off to go separate their heads from their bodies. Fancy a look? D: No thanks, I'll just wait here and do literally anything else. E: Fair enough. Your loss, then. Jesus said, 'Do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?"or "What shall we wear?" For [non-believers] run after all these things' (Matthew 6:31-32 NIV). One author WRITES: 'The other DAY I was WORRYING about SOMETHING when I HEARD a minister say, "WORRY is a LACK of TRUST in GOD". So then I began to WORRY over the FACT that I was WORRYING. Then SOMEONE else said, "Just DON'T worry about it". Sounds SIMPLE ENOUGH, but I COME from a LINE of people who speak FAITH, but act OUT of FEAR. Then a friend CAME up WITH this NOVEL idea: "Why DON'T you TRY this WORRY coupon. It ENTITLES you to WORRY as much AS you LIKE, but only if: A) IT WILL FEED AND CLOTHE YOU; B) It will ADD to your LIFE instead of TAKING from it; C) It will make TOMORROW better; D) You don't MIND ACTING like a non-believer!" Then he said, "If that DOESN'T work MAKE a list of all the things you are WORRYING about, place it in a BOX and PUT it up on a SHELF where YOU can't SEE it. If God is EITHER UNWILLING or UNABLE to take CARE of it, YOU can ALWAYS go GET the BOX and start WORRYING again but at LEAST give Him a CHANCE. And while you are WAITING for Him to ANSWER, PRAY, STAND on His WORD and DON'T GIVE your WORRIES a VOICE". 'The Amplified Bible says: 'Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you'. God's Servant Rev. Alfred Acheampong Anchor Scripture: 'CASTING ALL YOUR CARE UPON HIM, FOR HE CARES FOR YOU'. (1Peter 5:7 NKJV) Prayer Point: Heavenly Father help me to learn to cast all my cares upon You, knowing that You are able and capable of handling them in Jesus name. Stay Blessed! Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

It's an hour of silence as we examine the Inhuman king BLACK BOLT! Just kidding, you know neither of us can shut up for that long… listen now! Intro Get in those questions for 150th AMA Go back & listen to episode 68 on Medusa for better understanding of the dynamic Background (1:44) Black Bolt (Blackagar Boltagon) created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #45 (Dec. 1965) Black Bolt is the Inhuman king - exposed to Terrigen Mists as an embryo, his voice has the ability to create massive, destructive waves of energy - he was placed in a soundproof chamber and taught to control his voice, even while sleeping Reenters Inhuman society at nineteen, and his brother Maximus makes a deal with the Kree to take over - Black Bolt shouts at the Kree ship, which crashes on the Inhuman parliament, killing his parents - the sound also drives Maximus mad, and he swears revenge on Black Bolt He ends up engaged to his distant cousin Medusa, who would visit him in confinement, and they fell in love He and Medusa oversee the assimilation of Inhumans into the larger world, and engage with many heroes and villains in the universe Had a child with Medusa, in defiance of the Genetic Council, who believed his bloodline was too dangerous to continue - he gave up his crown to be with his son Regained the crown and helped the Inhumans resettle on the Blue Area of the Moon Was a member of the Illuminati, a secret group of highly intelligent & powerful individuals that attempted to manipulate events from behind the scenes - came to the forefront in World War Hulk when they exiled Hulk from the planet, and he came back seeking revenge (later revealed that this was actually a Skrull imposter, and the real Black Bolt had been kidnapped some time before) Played a major role in Infinity, as he was the one who discovered Thanos' plan to kill his son Thane Inhumans vs. X-Men - Black Bolt's use of his sonic scream on Cyclops is what kicked off the major war (it was actually a mental projection of Cyclops created by Emma Frost, as Scott had died due to exposure to the Terrigen Mists) Death of the Inhumans - has his throat slit by Vox, but still able to use his scream to escape imprisonment and joined the Royal Family in attacking the Kree - this permanently damaged his voice, however Issues - Theme is communication (6:00) Black Bolt. Blackagar Boltagon. From the first time I read the classic Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four run, he has always fascinated me. The basic building block of social interaction among humans -- and insofar as we know -- Inhumans, is speech. From a philosophical standpoint, there is no organized society without verbal communication. It's everything. It is the singular most important element that serves to bring people together to work as one for a common purpose. So you take a person who -- it's not like he's unable to speak through deafness from birth restricting his ability to absorb what speech should sound like, or throat cancer or an injury to the larynx or something similar preventing his vocal cords from functioning properly. He is fully capable of exercising that most basic tenement of social interaction, but if he utters even the slightest whisper, even by accident, if he coughs or sneezes, he can destroy everything and everyone around him. There's no established canon limit on what the power of his voice can actually accomplish, but everyone pretty much understands even the slightest sound from him is potentially catastrophic. As if going through life from birth having to engage in so much rigorous physical and psychological training to never utter a sound -- not even accidentally in your sleep -- wouldn't create enough issues for you, let's add onto that: you're the king of an entire race of people, entrusted with all of the responsibilities of governing and the expectations of leadership that entails. Oh, and you accidentally killed the primary support system you had in your parents when you found your brother forging a pact with the aliens who were directly responsible for your powers and understandably lashed out. Ho -- lee -- crap. How the man didn't become a gibbering wreck with a death wish as soon as he was old enough to fully grasp all this is the stuff of miracles. I think the fact that Black Bolt even functions at all, much less as well as he does given the circumstances, is a testament to just how well the guy's got it all together. Let's just try to run down what I'm sure is not a complete list of this man's issues: 1) Severe isolation. Your terrigenesis turned you into a potential weapon of mass destruction on a civilization-ending scale. You spent most of your life from that point on having to be in complete isolation from others and undergoing rigorous physical and psychological training to never utter the slightest of sounds with your voice, even by accident. Just communicating yourself, your feelings, your wants, and your needs to other people is a grueling exercise at best. You have to constantly make yourself understood to others in a way that they typically don't. Think of all the things this implies. 2) Crippling guilt at the very real consequences your powers have brought. You don't have to imagine what will happen if you slip up. You know full well. You killed your parents with your voice. You didn't mean to, it was an accident, but it happened. You have a family, you have a wife, you have people that you care about who absolutely will be reduced to a fine pink mist by a weapon that is of your person, your very essence of being, that you have almost no control over. That is a gorgon that will haunt your soul forever. (15:32) 3) Overwhelming responsibility. You are not just trying to function as a part of a society you can't realistically fit into. You are its king. Every one of your people looks to you for leadership, and you have to run your society and make your wishes known without being able to easily communicate them. When you have to have a conversation with other people where you don't know what you're going to have to communicate in advance, you are fully reliant on others that you have to place your trust in to communicate for you. With all of the lack of nuance that implies. You don't just not have a physical voice, you don't have a metaphorical one either. It's Medusa, or Professor X, or someone else you have a psychic connection with acting on your behalf. That's terrifying on a deep personal level. (26:29) Like I said, the fact that this man functions at all is a great credit to his incredible mental fortitude. Break (35:25) Plugs for BetterHelp, Frigay the 13th, and Al Ewing Treatment (37:27) In-universe - Bring him to pocket universe that neutralizes Black Bolt's voice to allow him to speak in his own words Out of universe - What does a therapist do with a patient that is mute by choice? The real-world parallels, we talked about before. Deaf, hard of hearing, and mute people. Stroke victims. People with throat cancer or something else that necessitates an electronic voicebox. Hell, I'll even go so far as people residing in a country where they don't speak the prevailing language, and are reliant upon interpreters to perform basic interactions with others. It can be a constant, nonstop, terrifying journey through life when you just can't communicate with others on your own. And like I said, I plead ignorance, but I assume noncommunicative people need psychological counseling. I just have no idea how that's done, when verbal communication is such a vital part of the process. (43:41) Skit (feat. Anna from Freudian Sips) (50:14) DOC: Hello Black Bolt, I'm Dr. Issues. And hello again Medusa, thanks for joining us to interpret. Normally I don't do this, but given the… unique communication barriers here, it's helpful to have someone here. MEDUSA: Of course, Doctor, good to see you again as well. Black Bolt and I appreciate you taking the time to speak to us. D: Please understand, no offense, but this is not meant to be a couples' session. As an interpreter, your role is to make sure that Black Bolt's statements are provided as clear as possible. Therefore, I will be speaking and looking at him directly while you assist us. If there is anything that needs clarification, please let me know. M: *slightly irritated, but polite* Yes, of course, Doctor. *pause* Black Bolt says thank you. D: Great. Now, what can I help you with today? M: Black Bolt says he wants to make strides with the world at large…without disrupting his personal life. D: That sounds reasonable, albeit a bit vague. I'm aware that you have a large role in your kingdom. Is there a particular aspect of your job that you're struggling with? M: Black Bolt says that he detests the notion that society can't fix it's own ills. *pause* My apologies, he says that he wants… others to have more participation and involvement… so he doesn't have to carry most of the burden… himself. D: That makes sense. I emphasize appropriate delegation all of the time. Is there something that prevents you from having the kind of balance you envision? M: He says there are… too many functions to go through on a daily basis… that are set to the royal family by default. Tradition weighs us all down. *aside* Especially his wife. D: Well, based on what I know, although there is still a right to confidentiality for the details, I can say that dovetails well with your personal relationships. M: Black Bolt says that he…is thankful…someone finally understands…wait, I'm sorry, I need to start over. Black Bolt says he is thankful I finally understand him better now. D: Huh?  M: Black Bolt wants to focus on… the loss of his free time. He is draining himself to serve… the people and serve his family. D: Oh…that took a bit of a turn. I'm sorry that things have been such a struggle. What are your coping mechanisms for recovery? M: Black Bolt says he enjoys time for…literature, and…taking walks with me. D: Aww, that's so kind…but he's shooting you a glare right now. What's up? M: He says that is not quite what he meant. He…likes…walking…alone…thinking about me. I apologize, he's going so fast now, it's hard to keep up. D: You seem very angry. Do we need to take a break? M: I'm just fine, doctor. D: I meant Black Bolt. Like I said, please just tell me what he is saying. M: Black Bolt says that…THINGS…aren't the way they are supposed to be right now. This is…slightly frustrating…If I weren't his queen I would be…somewhere less pleasant at the moment. D: Are you…are you censoring him? I would strongly advise you not to do that for the sake of any hope of progress. M: We apologize…as in, the royal we, because I have done nothing wrong…Black Bolt wishes to have an independent…NO.  D: An independent what?  M: An independent…point of view on how his emotions can be controlled OH MY! D: Well, I recognize what THAT finger means. It's obvious there's a breakdown here. Perhaps we all could use a time out. M: No, let's continue speaking. *clearly directed at Black Bolt* After all, it's good to get things off one's chest, right dear? BLACK BOLT: *snort* *gust of wind, small amounts of damage* D: No words necessary. And I DO mean that literally. Let's try this one more time M: Black Bolt says- D: *interrupting* Nope. No way. I see where this is going. I was a fool to think this wasn't a couples' session. No interpreter. Black Bolt…sir. I have no problem with you as a patient. But I also realize that I have put you in the most awkward situation imaginable. I'm sorry. We have to find another way to do this. I know you can write. Maybe secure email and text instead? Less hassle this way. M: Black Bolt says he…wants to keep trying…wait…keep trying how? I don't know how that works. D: What is it? M: So, this is me talking…he wants to make sure that you know I mean well, but tell you how I felt after my last session with you. But, I don't want to make it about me. That's not the point. D: So he's asking you something. That's fine. Ultimately, it's up to you.  M: Black Bolt says this interaction is a microcosm of how he feels every day. Bottled up, locking away a part of him that no one ever gets to know because it's too dangerous. He…has to be a statesman as well as a man of action, without a proper outlet. He…oh. D: What? M: He wonders if that's what childhood was supposed to be. D: I don't have an answer for that. Your experience is so beyond what I could imagine. To have someone be your voice from day one, always refied, monitored, scrutinized, manipulated, and yet bearing witness to the multitude of variance that humans and Inhumans have likely described, knowing full well that would never be your lot in anything that goes on. That's strength…but also the potential for agony. You're quite the being, Black Bolt. The definition of life's beautiful struggle, and I thank you for what you endure. M: Black Bolt says…wait…he…Doctor I can't…I won't interpret what he is saying. D: Um…did I do something to offend him? M: No, please understand, what is about to happen is in a perverse way the highest honor he can bestow upon you, and we have means to make amends. D: I have no clue what you're talking about. M: I'll let him explain for himself. D: For hims… WAIT WHAT? BB: *whisper* thank you *explosion sound effect* D: I truly appreciate the definition of peace and quiet, now more than ever. Log in as we dissect CYBORG! What upgrades can Doc offer him that he can't download himself? Listen now to find out! Intro Reminder to send questions for AMA 150  Background (1:34) Cyborg (Victor Stone) created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez in DC Comics Presents #26 (Oct 1980) Victor Stone is the son of two scientists, who use him as a test subject for intelligence experiments - he resents this, and falls in with a dangerous crowd as a way to rebel One of the experiments brings a hostile creature from another dimension into his parents laboratory - the creature kills his mother and gravely injures Victor before his father can return it to its home dimension and close the portal His father then uses bleeding edge experimental technology to save him, at the cost of the majority of his body now being robotic - when Victor awakens, he lashes out at his father, revealing he'd rather be dead than experimented on again without his consent He joins the Teen Titans as a way to find others with common experiences He then merged with an alien artificial intelligence named Technis, which helped him restore his mind, although it turned his body into an entirely cybernetic being named Cyberion, and he had to stay on the Technis planet in order to survive - this experience left him distant from humanity, and when he returned, he assimilated all the technology he could find until he was the size of the moon - he was attacked by the Justice League and the other Titans - Beast Boy was able to reach Victor's humanity and got him to upload his consciousness to another suit, rendering Technis inoperable Gets dismantled during Infinite Crisis, and it takes almost a year to put him back together New 52 - the explosion in his father's office is now related to a Mother Box, and Silas uses the technology to save Victor's life - he now can access the New Gods library and discovers Darkseid is invading Earth in search of the Anti-Life Equation - joins the fight with the Justice League to battle the invaders, and becomes a founding member of the team After the Crime Syndicate (an evil mirror version of the Justice League) invades, Cyborg is taken over by Grid (Earth-3's Cyborg), which expelled all his organic material - Hal Jordan used the Lantern ring to suspend him until Silas could operate on him and revive him again Issues - Theme is tinkering Adjustments to prosthetics Considers acceptance of his form to be equivalent to stagnation (18:59) Relationship with Silas has improved, but still has deep-seated trust issues (28:55) Break (38:41) Plugs for BetterHelp, Not If I Reboot You First, and Phillip Kennedy Johnson Treatment (40:43) In-universe - Learn coding to speak his language - has he ever “gone gold”? Out of universe - Multi-amputee with family issues (44:40) Skit (feat. Karrington from Real Dudes Podcast) (51:17) DOC: Hello Victor, I'm Dr. Issues. VICTOR: Hey Doc. Let's do this. I'm all in. D: *pause* Ooooookaaaay? *excited* OK! V: Here's a list of the last 3 angry outbursts I've had within the past month. I've also included my vitals, my calorie count, and I have a full database of the last 30 years of psychotherapeutic and psychotropic recommendations by the American Psychiatric Association for diagnoses in the DSM and the ICD 10, 11, and 12. D: There is no ICD 12 yet. V: I have my ways. D: But you don't even know what you're diagn  V: *interrupting* I have taken the MMPI Inventory and the standard deviation of error after multiple runs is within an acceptable range for any PhD, PsyD, MD, or DO with an acceptable clinical certification. I also cross-referenced any abnormal responses with screening exams for Depression, ADHD, psychosis, addiction, and monitored all of my hormonal levels to make sure there were no underlying physiological causes.  D: You don't need to screen yourself for addictions unless someone else  V: *interrupting, but actually excited* The Titans say I am addicted to tech. But they don't live with it like I do. I'm showing them that I am in full control of myself, and thanks to this research I've found a way to use Monte Carlo simulations for how likely I am to have any emotional response at any moment. I never thought about the human brain like this before. I can modify my eye to be a functional MRI device…if I could just find the proper shielding against my own body. D: That is dangerous and NOT fully diagnostic yet. I love the enthusiasm but…how do I put this? BACK OFF, CAN'T YA?!  V: Hmmm? *confused* I thought my gruntwork would make this easy for you. I am willing to undergo pharmacogenetic testing for the best medication. Isn't this what you do? D: *flustered* NO! Yes, well…it's complicated.  V: I know, right? If it took me a few all-nighters to get the reams of data necessary for an introductory session, I can't imagine what you have to do for multiple patients every day of the week! D: You want to know what I do? Honestly?  V: Yeah! I'll admit, I thought this was all psychobabble nonsense, but there is some real rigor behind neuroscience.  D: I talk to people, and they talk back to me. I make suggestions based on that information, along with the biological and social components, and repeat that process with the patient's input.  V: *sound of fuse blowing* That DOES sound like psychobabble nonsense. I mean, I can get you a copy of my last schematic D: PLEASE tone it down. I'm begging at this point. Look, I'm impressed by your efforts, but it's clear to me that you have no other format for viewing yourself. You're incredibly smart. You're laser focused - no pun intended. You realize that others think SOMETHING is up, and you double down on what you know. You're isolating yourself and you don't even know it.  V: The hell I am! I've been a key component in some of the most important events in human history...UNIVERSE history. You don't know me. D: There's that anger that you mentioned.  V: So my cortisol level- D: Nope…don't care.  V: Say whaaaaaaaaat?! D: Dude…just talk to me. How are you? How are those you care about? What's your favorite food?  V: This isn't a date. D: Not like that, but it IS a human interaction of getting to know one another. Please, just stick to the basics.  V: Nah man, if you don't recognize I'm Linux all the wa- D: SAY SOMETHING NOT RELATED TO RESEARCH OR TECH. NOW.  V: *sound of short circuiting* Sorry, doc, gotta reboot a few things D: Ohhhhhhh No, you're not avoiding this. I realize this is all a smokescreen now. Ever heard the phrase, ‘if you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, then baffle them with your bullshit? Well, sir, you have managed to create the ultimate bullshit brilliance hybrid I can fathom. Drop it.  V: Well, damn. You cut real deep with that, man. I'm not sure this will work out. D: Why not? Are you willing to do something that doesn't have a treasure trove of data to mine? Actually, I think it's the opposite; you get the chance to look at your own personal black box that's been hardcoded into your psyche. The more you're willing to let go, the greater the likelihood of a new finding.  V: *pause* You really want to do this without downloading the latest… D: *interrupting* Don't care unless you talk about your father.  V: Weeeeeeell…I'm sure you can google his name…ha ah haha *nervous laugh* *cough* Maaaaaaan, just let it go, will you? That's the problem with practitioners of soft sciences. They fall back on outdated formatting. Are you Freud 2.0 or something? D: Only if you're Cyborg plus.  V: I don't understand. I was expecting you to say “Cyborg 2022” or something.  D: No, I mean, there's nothing wrong with being…comfortable. I apologize for my frustration. You dig technology. Sweet. It's vital for you. But what else makes you who you are? You don't have to answer that for me just  V: *interrupting* Just myself. Yeah. My dad was the same way. Just colder. At least I'm around people that can make me feel good once in a while. That's a nice situation, ya know? Not trying to rain on their parades. I can't sit around watching TV or doing endless workouts or some such. I like making a difference. But I can always be better. I'm not sure anyone understands that. D: That was the best thing you've said this entire time. It seemed really tough. It gets easier over time.  V: You're opening my mind, Doc. D: Thanks, I  V: Yeah, I should have been downloading Beck and Ellis instead of just philosophical stoics when I was younger. I can do a PubMed search with the proper tags as soon as I leave D: *dramatic cough* AHEM  V: Orrrrrrr I could just…journal for 5 minutes tonight? D: You're catching on. I'll see you next session. I trust that you've already logged it on your calendar. V: *confident/satisfied* Booyah. Intro Background (0:57) Terra created by Marv Wolfman & George Perez in New Teen Titans #26 (Dec. 1982) Tara Markov is the illegitimate child of Viktor Markov, the king of Markovia She was experimented on and gained the ability to control earthen matter Unlike her brother Geo-Force, she believed her abilities made her a god, and she was meant to rule over people - this, coupled with the scandal of her parentage, caused her father to send her out of the country to the US Used her powers as a mercenary, eventually gaining the attention of Deathstroke, who took her under his wing Used her to infiltrate the Teen Titans, even going so far as to battle him to earn their trust After Deathstroke captured them, his son Jericho possessed him to free the Titans - this caused Terra to think he turned on her, and she pulled down the entire building in a fit of rage, seemingly killing herself Returns as a Black Lantern during Blackest Night - tries to seduce Beast Boy, and lies to her brother Geo-Force that she doesn't want to be reanimated A doppleganger later appeared - she was an alien sent to Earth and genetically manipulated to appear as the reincarnation of Tara, but the process erased her memory A new Terra named Atlee shows up in the New 52 as an ally of Supergirl and later Power Girl Issues - theme of manipulation (5:55) How her sociopathy relates to actual antisocial personality disorder Rejected by her father because of the nature of her parentage (13:44) Manipulated by Deathstroke to be his pawn (21:50) Break Plugs for BetterHelp, Harpy Hour, and Saladin Ahmed Treatment (32:57) In-universe - Use clay as a metaphor during play therapy treatment session Out of universe - Volatile & BPD issues (40:37) Skit (feat. Erin from Girls Talk Comics) (47:15) Doc: Hello Tara, I'm Dr. Issues. Terra: *cheerily* Hiiii D: Ooooookay…um, what brings you to T: *interrupts* What? Just because I greeted you with a smile and I'm happy makes you suspicious? You need to get over yourself. D: *pause* Not at all! I just got thrown off because usually the people that seek my guidance are exactly the opposite…or more neutral. I should also inform you that I have several quirks that lead some people to think I'm reading more into what they're saying than I am. T: But you're a psychiatrist. Your job is to read people. That's my job too, just for different reasons. D: I see. Care to elaborate? T: Nope. D: *pause* T: This is where you dig into what I really mean. D: You gave a very clear answer. If that's all, then T: WAIT WAIT WAIT What is this? ***What the fuck IS THIS?*** You just give up on someone the second they show a little resistance? You're…weird. Are you a loser? Are you fascinating? I don't know which. D: So how will you find out? Hurl more insults? Honestly, I haven't had someone so reactive in a bit. I'm chill, so you do you. T: ***THIS IS BULLSHIT*** You're supposed to comfort me to calm me down, not be all passive aggressive! Are you sure you're a psychiatrist? What am I even doing here? D: It's clear that you have some trouble managing anger when you don't run the show. I'm trying to strike that balance…but the fulcrum on your conversations makes every sentence a catapult! Who does the best job navigating this out of anyone you know? T: Two of them…and in different ways. D: How so? T: The first…if I talk about him, you're dead, so I won't. He was easy because he gave a job. Purpose. I did it perfectly. And he crushed our trust so I crushed everything around me. The other…ohhhhhhh…he's an animal…ANY animal…complete opposite. So much fun I'd do anything for that boy. D: To summarize, the first practical, the other whimsical. That means you have the potential to connect with a full spectrum of people. Perhaps blending a team T: *Interrupts* NO D: *pause* A support group.  T: Better. D: I have to acknowledge that your reactivity made benefit from med T: *interrupts* People putting things in my body is what made me go crazy! STOP! NO MORE! *rumble sound effects* D: I'm not going to yell back. I'm not forcing anything, unless you demonstrate a danger, so please, let's keep this civil. Neither of us need to deal with damage to this office. *sotte voce* And my insurance company is gonna drop me if I file one more claim like this. T: I've had enough of this. You claim to be this super calm doctor and have all of my problems figured out, but you don't know a thing about me. You have a great life. You never had to build trust and break it, and have it broken on you, over and over again! You never got so enraged you basically killed yourself! You didn't find the love of your life and have to throw yourself at them just to get a kiss! Tell me, how would you handle that? How would you be in my shoes? D: I'd probably freak out a bit. I'd have intense emotions, and I don't know how or when they'd overwhelm  me. For all I know, I'd react similarly to you, because I'm a living, breathing human and nobody deserves to be put through pain. But pain exists. Channel it. Do something different. Otherwise, you're just going to spread pain to everyone else. T: *groans and screams* I AM OUT OF HERE. You're lucky your office isn't a pile of rubble right now. Think about THAT! ***Fucking obnoxious prick!*** *door slams* D: *sigh* *whispers* 5-4-3-2- T: *door opens* AND THE NEXT SESSION I'LL TALK ABOUT DEATHSTROKE SO HE CAN KILL YOU. *switches to cheery* Thursday afternoons work the best, byeeee! DC, and Chris Claremont Treatment (29:53) In-universe - Create a machine to use her powers to help regulate her emotions Out of universe - (34:15) Skit (47:39) DOC: Hello Polaris, I'm Dr. Issues. POLARIS: So whaddya wanna talk about first? D: Just cut right to it, eh? P: Not one for beating around the bush. When you've seen the stuff I have, you don't waste time. D: Fair enough. Well if that's the case, I'll leave it up to you to choose the topic, and we can go from there. P: I don't like being manipulated. D: I'm sure you don't, like most people. P: I don't mean mislead or gaslit, I mean people actually getting into my brain and making me do things beyond my control. D: I'm...not sure how I can help with that other than to tell you to avoid situations where someone would get that opportunity. P: *bitter* Thanks for nothing. D: Wait! I'm not saying I can't help you completely, I'm saying I don't have psychic powers. I didn't know if that's what you were looking for; I didn't want to mislead you...which kind of ties in, right? *nervous laugh* P: Nice save. Yeah, I understand if you thought about it from a mutant perspective. No, I don't want any psychic stuff. I want...resilience I guess. D: You've survived, so that shows a baseline resilience. What sort of emotional and physical responses occur when you think about those situations? P: Everything. All of it. It's horrible. D: No wonder it's the first thing on your mind. Not to sound stereotypical, but trauma really does carry its own special kind of baggage. Is this recent stuff, or childhood, or both? P: This is where it gets weird. It started at childhood, but I didn't know about it, and then there were other problems as I got older that were unrelated to that, but were a direct result of the kid stuff. It sounds convoluted when I say it like that. D: And yet, I was able to follow. Families hide things to theoretically protect the innocent, but there's the risk of altering the relationship at a later age. P: Exactly! And then I have to sort out all of it. My father, my foster parents, Alex, the other ones who controlled me...it's too much. D: It sounds like a lot- P: *interrupting* And don't forget everyone that died...they didn't HAVE to die...I'm not saying it's my fault...but what if I didn't do enough...I'm not some hysterical monster! D: Whoa, I didn't say - P: And don't say it's not my fault. I had to be the embodiment of making the worst fears of humanity come true. Whenever someone powerful sees me, they automatically think of me as a commodity. And what's the fix? Mind wipe. False memories. But all I ever do is keep digging. Nobody was able to keep me from my own truth.  D: Do you have - P: *clear pattern of interrupting from this point* Anybody to help? Yeah. I really do, but how can they understand? They can't. You can't understand. *frustrated* Ugh, what's the point of all this? I know that nobody else has the answers. D: What do you - P: I want trust! I want to be trusted, and to trust other people. Whenever I do, it backfires. I'm just so sick of- D: FIRST OFF, LET ME FINISH. P: Why are you shouting? D: *sigh* I'm trying to match your intensity...although that's a difficult task. You have identified the problem accurately. For some people, that takes years of counseling, so you're ahead of the curve. P: Well thank - D: I'm not done. HOWEVER, it's clear you're trying to compensate for a historical lack of control with an even bigger focus on commandeering a conversation to your whims. That won't work for longer periods with a professional. And… P: *pause* and what? D: Oh, I'm sorry, I was just expecting another interruption. Anyway, the point is, trust is not a light switch, even if everyone around you treats it like one. Does that make sense? P: Sure. But try convincing anyone close in my life of that. D: Not gonna give you any BS on that. You're going to struggle with this for a while. ***electrical sound effects*** what the hell is that? P: I didn't do anything. D: ***walking effects*** oh, I think we just had a power surge. ***thunder effect*** Damn weather is going crazy. You'd think Storm was… oh no... P: *more electrical effects, possible female scream*  D: Are you okay?! P: *calm* Okay with what?  D: You just look like you got electrocuted. I think we have a blackout in the area. P: That sounds bad. Who are you, by the way? D: NO! P: Oh...well, If you're gonna be a jerk about it, I'll introduce myself first. I'm - D: I know who you are...do you remember anything that you already said to me?  P: I asked you who you are, and you have this freaked out look. I'm supposed to meet with a therapist, so if you're the assistant- D: Let's just reschedule...no wait, I think if…*rubbing shoes on carpet* hopefully I can build up the static P: It looks like you're a weird dancer so…*another electric shock sound* D: Ow! I hope that did it P: WHAT KIND OF SICKO PSYCHIATRIST ARE YOU SHOCKING ME LIKE THAT?! I spent all of this time pouring my heart out to you and you turn it into some joke? D: Um...you're welcome? P: Ugh. You're just like all of the others! *walks out of the office, door shuts* D: *shouting far* AT LEAST I GAVE YOU YOUR MEMORIES BACK! Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Intro Background (1:43) Homelander created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson in The Boys #3 (Nov. 2006) Introduced as the leader and most powerful member of the Seven, a group of corporate-sponsored superheroes Initially comes off as affable, only to reveal he's actually a misogynistic jerk - and it gets worse from there Public backstory is that he was an alien who landed on Earth, but in reality his mother was a mentally disabled woman who died in childbirth, and he was the byproduct of genetic experiments from Stormfront, a Nazi superhero - he spent his childhood strapped to a hydrogen bomb in case he tried to escape Homelander hates being a hero, but only does so because Vought pays him handsomely Later revealed that Billy Butcher, head of a group of humans who hate the Seven, has special dislike for Homelander because Homelander raped his wife, who died giving birth to a superpowered baby, which Billy then killed immediately #BecauseComics Homelander is revealed to have no memory of this or many other horrific acts which he is blamed for - this causes him to have a psychotic break and begin doing whatever he wants He has no memory because the horrible acts were actually committed by Black Noir, a clone of Homelander that Vought created to keep Homelander in check - since Black Noir's sole purpose was to kill Homelander, he gaslit Homelander to drive him insane in order to justify killing him - Homelander and Black Noir fight, and Black Noir kills Homelander, but is injured enough that Billy could finish him off with a crowbar Issues (8:46) Matt: Wow. The layers upon layers to this guy. He really is just the embodiment of the nature versus nurture argument writ large, isn't he? Injected with an artificial compound to give him superpowers in the womb, mother died giving birth to him, spent his entire childhood chained to a hydrogen bomb so he wouldn't escape from Vought. Raised with no other purpose in life but to become a living corporate-sanctioned product whose image and likeness would be sold for profit while he awed and wowed a company's customers. Given every single ounce of hedonistic excess he could ever want by his company to keep him happy and cooperative and, basically, to stop him from using his powers to destroy the world and/or enslave the human race. This naturally instilled in him some deep-seated psychological issues: 1. Entitlement. I mean...holy crap. The man's mantra is, "I can do whatever the fuck I want." Coercing women into sex? Not a problem. Gleefully using his powers against civilians? Assholes shouldn't have been standing there. It's positively bone-chilling the way he doesn't even give his actions a second thought, or much of a first one. 2. Complete lack of empathy. The man does not even consider non-Supes to be people. Absolutely does not care about the damage any of his actions cause. Also can't even be bothered to try to help people in need unless it's his bosses telling him to. On 9/11, doesn't even want to try and save the plane until someone points out they'll probably get fired if they don't. (13:54) 3. Unapologetically racist and sexist. Has a hierarchy, even among his fellow supes. Women are beneath men. Nonwhites are beneath whites. Basically anyone who's not him or just like him is beneath him. Referencing The Deep, as Bill Burr would say, he drops the hard "r", hits the dismount, and sticks the landing. Multiple times. Views Maeve and Starlight as sex objects first, superheroes second. But, and this is a but, it's implied that he at least tried to adhere to the idealism of a hero early on in his career, even if he was a bit of a prick about it. And it was nonstop long-term gaslighting campaign of Black Noir -- tricking him into believing he suffered from blackouts where he committed horrific acts of rape and mass murder and had no memory of it -- that caused him to go full-blown monster. That he thought to himself, in for a penny, in for a pound. After he's descended into what we see in the comics, we learn that the major issue that he's struggled with his whole life is that, as Stillwell points out in their big confrontation, with all his power, he is really nothing special at his core. There is literally not one person chosen at random who couldn't do everything he'd done in his life if they were given his powers. Oh boy, does that eat at him. He's nobody, just a guy who won the superpower lottery and decided to treat it like most people do when they win the actual lottery. Man, that's a lot of meat to chew on right there. Real-life analogue? Ummm...Dance Moms, anyone? Child actors? Child beauty pageant contestants? Kids who are steered into an activity before they have any inkling of whether or not they actually want to do it and pushed on relentlessly by obsessive parents who want their kids to be the best to satisfy their own egos, robbing them of a childhood and making them sincerely believe that they are better than anyone else? You don't have to go too far to imagine all the real-life Homelanders out there. Skit (NSFW warning) (46:28) DOC: Hello Homelander, I'm Dr. Issues. HOMELANDER: Good afternoon, Doc. I appreciate all mental health professionals. I may wear a cape, but you're a true hero. D: Thanks for that. H: So how long you been with the company? D: Company? H: Vought. I figure it has something to do with the casualties from our last appearance. Real shame those people were in the car. Unfortunately, those terrorists were too far away for me to get to in time, and I had to throw SOMEthing at them. D: I don't work… wait, what? H: You know how it is. Bad guys with guns. So I had to make a choice. There was a car nearby, so I threw it at the terrorists. Wasn't until I heard the screams that I realized it wasn't empty. And super though I may be, I'm only so fast. I mean, I'm no A-Train, that's for sure. D: Oh no...I've met many first responders who have had to make snap judgements like that, but not with such...force. H: Yeah, they're usually crybabies about it. I got over that s**t a long time ago.  D: So you really don't care that there may have been any other way to handle  life and death situations? H: Do you have any real suggestions? I can see someone like you acting all Monday morning quarterback, but who really gets their hands dirty? D: I'm not disrespecting you by asking to expand your thought process. You said you respect mental health professionals, right? H: Real professionals, yeah. D: What's that supposed to mean? H: Someone who got where they are through hard work and dedication, not just to fill some quota. You know, like we do with the Deep. D: Glad I have the GPA and scholarships to prove it then. Unless you think the people important enough to run this operation would place any random quack in here to talk to you. H: Anyway, I'm sure the paperwork monkeys have all that taken care of. I'll do some talk show appearances, a photo op with the family members of the… Johnsons? Johnstons? Johnbergs? Ah, who the f**k cares.  D: Homelander, I'm sorry, I think there's been a misunderstanding. I don't work for Vought. H: Oh. Then why the f**k am I talking to you then? D: You are right, it's because those people died, though.  H: Well like I said, their fault they were nearby.  D: Oh my God, how does anyone believe you're a hero? H: Because I save poor bastards like you all the time. D: OK, I'm done pretending. Homelander, you are under arrest by the United State military in conjunction with the deaths of four civilians, along with mass property damage. I am here to assess your competence prior to trial. H: What. The. F**k. D: And to ensure your cooperation, you have been placed inside an energy field, which I might as well reveal to you now. *energy hum* H: Are you f**king kidding me? D: So now that we've gotten that out of the way H: You listen to me, you pencil pushing c*******er. You have no goddamn right to keep me here, and I assure you as soon as I get out the FIRST f**king thing I'm doing is ramming my fist so far down your throat you'll be able to chew out your own ass for being so f**king r******d. D: So since you're being detained, I don't need to tell you that this is meant as therapy to improve anything. You've already given me the information I need to make a decision as to whether or not you're dangerous. H: You're goddamn right I'm dangerous. I'm the most powerful f**king thing on the planet. There's no God, there's just me. And all you worthless peons can suck my asshole. D: At this point, due to your severe agitation, I'm required to ask if you have any history of medication that has helped you to stay calm and perhaps relax for a while. H: I relax by jerking off. And when I'm done killing you, I'll jerk off on your f**king corpse.  D: Duly noted. Then it's my selection with regards to… hmm… how do we deliver medication to an invulnerable being? H: You aren't going to deliver S**T, do you understand? For someone who's supposedly smart enough to graduate whatever degree mill you came from, you're f**king oblivious to how utterly F**KED you are when I break this field. There isn't a thing that can hold me forever. And the fact that you haven't run away screaming means you're even dumber than you look, you stupid ni- D: Alright, that's enough of that. I was entertaining you up to this point, because your blustering isn't all that uncommon in my area of practice. But the racism is a special kind of heinous. So with that, we're done here. H: No, we're not done. You can walk away, but I promise, I will find you, and I *punch* will *punch* end *punch* you. D: Good luck with that. H: F**K YOU! AHHHHH! *punch* *shatter* D: Oh s*** H: *punch* *gory sound effects* I told you I'd kill you. And now to relax. *zip* *masturbates furiously* What the F**K did I tell you? I do whatever the F**K I want, when I want, because I'm f**king GOD. Khelan) (59:20)   DOC: Hello Billy, I'm Dr. Issues. BILLY: Hey Doc.  D: How are you?  B: I mean, things have been worse. D: That's not exactly a rousing endorsement. B: Sorry, I just mean there were a lot of questions that were driving me crazy, and I don't have nearly as many as I did before. That's a good thing. D: I'm glad to hear that. So what lingers? B: Still a ton of stuff. *pause* This is a bit hard, you know? I get it's your job, but sometimes I think even professionals will misinterpret what I'm saying, so I'm careful with what I let out. D: Totally understandable. Just remember that this is confidential, so even if things don't go as expected, they stay between us as long as no one is put in danger. B: Good to know. D: So, name something you want to discuss. B: Iwanttobecalmiwanttobecalmiwanttobecalm… D: Excuse me? B: Sorry, just wanted to be sure I was in the right headspace before I started. Is it wrong to want your husband to be around more? D: That...sounds like a loaded question. I take it you mean “more than he is now” and that there is some sort of barrier to that? B: Exactly. D: Does he disagree with you? B: NOT exactly. It's more to do with...outside activities. D: Are they activities that you approve of? B: I don't have a choice. D: There's always a choice; it's just a matter of consequences. B: Well, the consequences here involve the wellbeing of a whole empire, so do with that what you will. D: *pause* Heavy stuff. B: And listen, I'm so proud of him taking on this responsibility, and he does it so well and capably. And it doesn't hurt that he looks AMAZING with a crown on his head. I just… I want some more US time, y'know? D: For once when talking to a superhero, I DO know, quite well. How far would you say the scale has shifted? B: Oh, he hasn't packed on weight or anything. He still can bench press D: *interrupting* I'm glad that you're clearly still into him physically...what I meant was, on the work-life balance spectrum of his time with the crown versus his time with you, where is he on that scale? B: Hmmmm...maybe 75-25? No that's too harsh. How about 60-40. D: Your first answer was your gut, and that's ok. Intuition that's unrecognized can lead to dangerous emotional impulse. Your second answer sounds like what you would settle for. But tell me...really. What do you want it to be? B: The selfish side of me would say 5-95, and that's being generous. I just… we're newly married, our honeymoon was interrupted by symbiote dragons attacking the resort, and it seems like he can't make a decision without having to worry about some intergalactic treaty or alliance hanging on his every move. I love him, and I'll be his ride or die until neither of us draw breath, but I confess I did NOT see this as part of the whole “till death do us part” thing when I fell in love with him. So the simple answer is I don't honestly know what a good balance would be, but I know this ain't it. D: That may be one of the most mature answers I've heard in a long time. I'm not going to promise that those outside factors are going to change, but I can vow that it is my ethical duty to help your attempts at discovering a better balance each time we discuss it in each session. My only caution to you is to not expect things to just magically change. B: Except you realize who you're talking to, right? D: Yes, but even still- B: Iwantabetterbalanceiwantabetterbalanceiwantabetterbalance D: As I was saying, I know you want things to get towards total devotion, but the increase in civil unrest may be taking an emotional toll on your partner. Have you talked about that with him? B: Pardon me, but, I don't think it's THAT bad. D: Well, 25-75 isn't your perfect goal, and yet, the attempts on the lives of your fellow heroes must have led to so much anxiety.  B: No, no, that's not - D: But you did say he was willing to surrender if it came time to save you. I'm glad that he has made it known how much he loves you. B: Iwantabetterkingdomiwantabetterkingdomiwantabetterkingdom D: You're clearly using your abilities to influence what you can. I've been talking a lot here. Rather than creating more stress for yourself, let me know, what's your take on your husband's pushback? B: *semi-robotic* I want the kingdom to be better. *normal* I thought I made that clear with the spells and the talking and I really thought you would have picked up on this by now oh my gosh have I completely made things worse oh no oh no oh no not again… D: Well, I usually don't jump to this in a session, but your anxiety appears to be through the roof! Have you considered other forms of relaxation, or a discussion on possible medication management? B: Sorry, sorry, I just had a bit of a freakout there...we were talking about acceptable balance. I'm willing to work at it the slow...the NON MAGIC way. D: No problem. 76-24 is not the worst I've ever heard in terms of a ratio B: WHAT? D: Just a bit of humor on my end. Usually the reality is somewhere between your gut and your partner's thoughts. I'm in no position right now to tell what the number is. Only you know that. B: Oh, so the things you said before, with what I cast, and the responses after that, it wasn't so bad I didn't screw everything up there's still a chance oh my god this is amazing! D: You're...welcome? I must say, for someone who knows a lot about things I couldn't begin to understand, you sell yourself short with how much you have in your control. B: Maybe not as much as you think, doctor. D: Ok then, perhaps we'll discuss how much control you have over the situation in our next session. In the meantime, enjoy that makeup honeymoon that your constituents planned for you out of respect for your personal lives. B: Whoa...whoa...then it really made a difference? I did better? I...nevermind. You're right. Let's leave it at that. Iwanttogototeddyiwanttogototeddyiwanttogototeddy... SG: Oh, Deadpool came up with trading cards for all kinds of heroes, villains, and other associated characters. D: But I'm not a- SG: Now that I'm seeing you in person, though, I think the artist didn't capture your features well at all. D: I'm so confused… SG: Sorry, I know I'm throwing a lot at you. Let's start over. Hi, I'm Doree-uh, Squirrel Girl. D: I know your name, but we can go with Squirrel Girl if you'd like. SG: How'd you discover that? My totally secret identity is totally a secret. Unless… CAN YOU TALK TO SQUIRRELS TOO? D: No, can't say that I can. (Although I honestly haven't tried…) Anyway, I'm not supposed to be the focus of an encounter. How can I help you? SG: Can I get an autograph? D: *pause* You are really taking this trading card thing to heart, huh? SG: Is that a yes? D: Short answer, no. Longer answer, only if you actually discuss something that is worth being in a psychiatrist's office for besides giving off fangirl vibes. SG: Well, aren't you a party pooper! Ok then, help me deal with squirrels. D: I...uh...well, I would need to know a little about their...personalities? Is there some sort of baseline compatible with humans and the type of sentience I'd be used to? SG: They're way more capable of bridging the gap between humanity and squirreldom than you think! They can be as moody and petty and impulsive as anyone you've ever treated. I'm sure of that.  D: I usually see you pictured with one squirrel, though. Obviously you have favorites. Pets are certainly a part of the family. SG: Do you consider your child to be a pet, then? D: Well...no. I can see how my wording can make things sound awkward. I'm sure to make plenty of mistakes. SG: So that part of the card is true! D: *flustered* Does that card say anything GOOD about me?  SG: I thought you weren't going to talk about yourself. D: Only because you brought it up again! So...back to it. You're close to squirrels. How does that compare to humans around you?  SG: Not bad. Actually, I think I can relate to just about anything that wants to talk. D: That's wonderful! Do you have an example?  SG: I was nice to Galactus so he didn't eat the Earth. D: You...you saved all of us from something that could eradicate us with hunger, all by being nice to him? You shooed away an omnipotent being? You defeated multiple villains with an army of creatures the average person ignores or actively tries to avoid. Life...doesn't usually work out that way. SG: It does for me. Are you calling me a liar?  D: No! In fact, you may be the most honest patient I've had in a while. But that's not something I can help you improve. What's something that you consider to be a weakness? SG: Sometimes, I think I'm too nice. D: I've definitely heard that before. You don't want to give too much of yourself to others, and leave little time for yourself. What would you say is the ideal balance for you?  SG: Maybe stereotypical, but how about 50/50. D: 50/50...of what? There's more than 2 sides to a person's life.  SG: Not necessarily. Half for me, half for everyone else. D: *truly stunned* I mean, spiritual, physical, family and friends, vocational...you're telling me that it all comes down to 50/50? SG: Yup. Works for me. Works for my teammates. It probably doesn't work for enemies, but that's why I win! D: I don't want to lose track of you saying you're TOO nice. And yet, you're giving me an amazing, elegant schema for which you view life. What's off kilter? SG: I babysit too much. D: So...don't do it as much?  SG: *genuine surprise* Really? That makes so much sense! Then I would have more time to do other things! Wow. I needed to hear that. Thank you so much! D: *clearly thinks this is sarcasm* You don't have to bait me into thinking- SG: *interrupting* Sometimes it just takes a professional like you to remind a regular old superbeing like me about the little things. That intelligence rating on your card is spot on! D: Wait...what? I'm considered intelligent? At what rank? SG: Ooooh, nice try, but I learned my lesson. You don't want to talk about yourself or that silly card. D: But I thought you wanted me to sign it. SG: Hmm… I suppose it would add to the value. Although we don't have any way to verify the signature, and CGC is backed up like CRAZY these days… fine, here you go. D: *signing sound* And now that I have it, lemme take a look… A THREE?!?! THAT'S IT?!?! SG: It's out of 7, so it's not as bad as it sounds. D: YOU'RE NOT HELPING. SG:I'm only a three too. So is Captain America.  D: I'm...with...him...but he's the very essence of what a hero is supposed to be. I gushed to him...oops! SG: I KNEW IT! You're just like all of us, and yet, you still help everyone you see. We're not so different. D: Except you have squirrel powers. SG: Are you going to keep saying that? D: As long as you keep saying I'm just like you. SG: Then how can you bridge the gap between people who can't see the common stuff? D: *pause* You just summarized my whole life's goal to make sure I stayed on track. I'm dumbfounded. How about this: I try to understand more about critter characterization, and you...just keep being you, except stick to a basic question I can answer like before. SG: It's a deal! I'll bring Tippy-Toe along next time, and I'll translate for you. D: OK. So should I bring nuts for him- SG: Her. And we'll bring our own. She's very particular. No offense. D: Understood. Intro Thanks to new Mayor patron Blaize Background (2:42) Shang-Chi created by Steve Engleheart & Jim Starlin in Special Marvel Edition #15 (Dec. 1973) Shang-Chi introduced as the son of Fu Manchu, an evil sorcerer bent on world domination - his white mother was chosen based on her genetics - Shang was raised to be an assassin and serve his father, but on his first mission to kill one of his father's rivals, he has a change of conscience, and discovers his father is the true evil Early stories largely based around defeating his father's henchmen and doing everything he can to stop him - also based heavily in racist Yellow Peril tropes Often teamed up with other martial artists, like White Tiger, Iron Fist, and Daughters of the Dragon After finally destroying his father's organization, he retired to become a fisherman, but was drawn out to assist former colleagues at MI-6 Joined the Marvel Knights, run by Daredevil, to take down the Punisher and his extrajudicial killings Joined the second iteration of Heroes for Hire during Civil War, and began a relationship with Tarantula, although it was over quickly due to her violent tendencies Joined the Secret Avengers to help track down his father, who had been resurrected again Gained spider powers during the Spider-Island event, but when he mutated into a spider, Iron Fist used his chi powers to cure him Joined other Asian heroes in the Protectors and the Agents of Atlas - together they fought Sindr, Ismenios, and other villains Later became the Supreme Commander of the Five Weapons Society, his father's old organization, but vowed to use it for good - this put him in conflict with other members of the group, but several of them allied to his cause Was temporarily the host of the Phoenix Force when it was seeking someone new, but when he refused to kill Captain America in battle, the Phoenix rejected him and left his body Tracked down his half-sister, who had left the society, and convinced her to return Issues (9:41) Dealing with having a mass murdering villain for a father No childhood outside of training (15:45) Raised thinking the Western world was horrible & out to get him (23:24) Break (33:18) Plugs for BetterHelp, Freudian Sips, and Saladin Ahmed Treatment (35:12) In-universe - Help him hone energy sensing abilities Out of universe - Address cultural differences, and meet the patient where they are without being condescending (38:16) Skit (49:14) DOC: Hello Shang-Chi, I'm Dr. Issues. SHANG-CHI: Greetings, doctor. D: I'd tell you to make yourself comfortable, but it seems you've already done that.  SC: Comfort is a luxury seldom offered, and even more rarely accepted. Forgive me if this ironically makes you uncomfortable. D: No, it's fine. We don't have a “no shirt, no shoes, no service” sign out front for a reason. This is a place for calm and peace.  SC: I am sure you mean well, and truly believe that. But sadly, Doctor, wherever I go, chaos follows me like a tail attached to a cat, and I am certain this office will be no different. D: That must be difficult to deal with.  SC: I long ago accepted my fate. My father's influence is far-reaching, and even without him, there are many who would seek to usurp the title of Master of Kung-Fu. Even as I agreed to meet with you, I pondered whether there was a chance this was a trap for a sneak attack. D: I'm certainly glad you trusted me enough to come here, for what it's worth. What made you finally agree?  SC: I spoke to some trusted associates who have been clients of yours. Their experience and faith in you was enough to convince me.  D: So now that you're here, what do you want to discuss? SC: At this point in my life, I am trying to transition my path to one of less fighting. However, as I said, so much of what I do involves martial arts that this seems impossible.  D: No forks in the road. That's one way to look at it. I'll pause on that because I see on your face that there is more to it. SC: I know that you think I am being blind to other options, but it is not as you say. I have taken service jobs. I have been a teacher of the craft. I do not wish to abandon all that I know for the sake of comfort. And still...something haunts me. Other noble heroes invite me. If I am not asked first, then I am chosen as a consequence. I am thankful that I have survived so far, and I do not fear death. But there is this pestering essence that the world does not accept me as I am. D: That's...heavy. It's rare that I'm taken aback by someone due to their eloquence. I have to admit, I got lost in it! SC: Forgive me if I am rude, but your statement itself is an example of it. D: I'm still lost. SC: You said I speak well. D: *pause* OH MY GOD I AM SO SORRY I DID THAT I'VE HAD IT DONE TO ME I AM AN IDIOT I WOULD NEVER MEAN TO DO THAT ON PURPOSE I  SC: *laughs* Your chi is genuine. But do you realize how common that is, how through no forethought, we are verbally sparring? I know that is how it will be for the rest of my life. At least, that's how I perceive it. D: Perception is reality. I won't hide my mistakes, and I'm thankful for your latitude. But that tells me your experiences have been way more hostile than a random faux pas. SC: You have quickly redeemed yourself. Yes, there are blatant examples that happen. How am I supposed to grant grace to those who don't do the same? Unfortunately, my father did me no favors. I carried a similar yoke of disdain across my shoulders for those I only knew through his eyes. I am grateful for my enlightenment so many years ago as a young man. But I feel those same shackles weighing down those around me when they see me, not knowing what to make of me, what to say, fearful or angry and not even understanding why. D: It's not your - or anyone's - singular purpose to enlighten every individual. You'll make yourself feel worse that way. Focus on the successes, be they one or one million. SC: You know, it's not just the common man. I was chosen by the Phoenix Force once. I fought Captain America. I had proven myself ...but because I showed grace, I was eliminated by Phoenix itself. Still...I would make that decision again. D: A worthwhile and rigorous process is the true path, regardless of the outcome. Thank you for reminding me of what my own Attendings taught me. But using a great thought process, even when all emotions say to ignore it, that's true mastery. SC: It is fair to say we understand one another so far.  D: Oh believe me, it's hard for me to keep my chill when someone calls me a SC: *cuts him off* Wait. D: What? SC: Something is amiss. D: I don't -  SC: Silence. *beat* Get down. *glass shatters* ASSASSIN LEADER: SHANG-CHI! THE WHITE DRAGON CALLS FOR YOUR DEATH! D: Who's the White Dragon? SC: *fighting sounds throughout* Unclear. There have been several with that name. I watched the last one die. Beheaded by my brother. It seems someone new has taken up the mantle.  D: And I thought my family was difficult to deal with… SC: *to fighters* You all fight well, but in service to a madman. There will be no shame in submitting now. I promise this. But continue to fight me, and you and your master will suffer great pain. AL: You will join us, Shang-Chi, or die. Either way, the White Dragon Clan will be victorious! SC: There is no victory in your falsehoods.  D: But there will be a huge insurance claim coming your way! AL: The doctor is of no consequence! Subdue him or kill him, it is of little matter. D: I'M OUT! SC: *more fighting sounds, tapering off* there is no need, doctor. D: You...just took down a hit squad, while conversing at the same level as your original discourse with me…*random movement sounds* AND YOU'RE FIXING THE ROOM?!!! SC: I have brought pain and despair to your office. For this, I must apologize. D: Ok, first off, if we are going to have sessions together, do not apologize for saving my life.  Second, if it weren't insulting to a man of your stature *whispers* and I could afford it *normal* I would hire you as my bodyguard on sight. SC: Or, I could teach you, in exchange for your psychiatric services. Bartering at it's finest. D: “The Way of The Issues…” I'm sold! Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Intro Background (2:10) Amanda Waller created by John Ostrander, Len Wein, and John Byrne in Legends #1 (Nov 1986) Amanda Waller introduced as leader of Suicide Squad, a branch of Task Force X - she butts heads with everyone on the team, especially Captain Boomerang, but she gets results Later revealed that her family was murdered living in Chicago - worked her way up from congressional aide to head of Suicide Squad Janus Directive - Nearly assassinated and replaced with a doppleganger, but kills the double and passes so she can find out who sent them Later serves under President Lex Luthor as Secretary of Metahuman Affairs, until she is imprisoned for running afoul of Luthor Released by the next President and put in charge of Checkmate, serving as both Black King and White Queen Discovered to be responsible for an anti-Superman organization called Last Line, and created a monster named All-American Boy made of Kryptonite and Doomsday's cells to battle Superman should he ever go rogue New 52 - Back in charge of Suicide Squad, and later responsible for helping to create Justice League of America DC Rebirth - reports directly to President Obama, and tells him Suicide Squad is a necessary evil - Rick Flag is put in charge of Task Force X Later fakes her own assassination to reveal an international cabal that the Squad helps take down Issues (6:11) Matt's question: “How in the hell does someone get to be like that? Where not only the criminals she works with, but other people in general, are literally nothing to her. They have absolutely no agency to her except as instruments, means to her goals, or whatever tasks she's been assigned by the people above her. Her wonderfully fleshed-out backstory does a great job of explaining her iron determination, aggressiveness, and take-no-shit-from-anyone demeanor, and it's easy to see how it would give her a fight-fire-with-fire philosophy, but not the place of complete and utter detachment from basic moral principles she regularly goes to in order to do her job. She's certainly not a sociopath, at least I don't think so. She's demonstrated plenty of times that she's perfectly capable of empathy. In fact, I'd argue she's more skilled at empathy than most people. It's what makes her so effective at her job, reading people and being able to intuit what they're feeling and the things they want. She just ultimately doesn't care what happens to anyone else, unless it's a part of her mission objective. And it's not an act she puts on for the benefit of the people in the Suicide Squad or the targets they're sent up against; she displays the same casual disregard for superheroes, government officials, military brass, and world leaders. It's like other people just don't matter to her at all. The only thing I can come up with to maybe explain her is that, owing to the circumstances of her early life, it'd be really easy to have a hyper-pessimistic default assumption that humans are generally evil, venial, corrupt little shits who don't warrant much consideration. That's something that, unfortunately, with how old and set in her ways Waller is, it'd be really difficult to get her to change. She probably doesn't view anything about herself as being a problem that needs fixing, even though it's gotten her thrown into prison more than once.” Break (27:40) Plugs for BetterHelp, Hops Geek News, and Meredith Finch Treatment (29:44) In-universe - Have her work on fixing the bottled city of Kandor Out of universe - (34:00) - Entrenched government bureaucrat on a power trip Skit (feat. Jasmin from Geeks Unleashed) (41:54)  DOC: *muffled* What's going on? Where am I? AMANDA: Hello, Dr. Issues. D: *bag comes off head* What the hell… Amanda Waller? What are you doing? A: I don't do therapy sessions, and certainly not in your office. I have other plans for you. D:  Do those plans involve untying me from this chair? A: Depends on how you answer the next few questions. Although having read your file, I think I have an inkling as to how this will go. D: Is that so? Care to enlighten me then? A: Sure. You'll try to talk your way out of this, I'll explain what I'm doing, you'll still do your best to weasel out, I'll reveal that I implanted a bomb in the base of your skull, and then you'll do what I say.  D: YOU WHAT?  A: Oh, the bomb. I needed a failsafe to make sure you played along.  D: WHAT HAPPENED TO ASKING NICELY?  A: I don't have time for that. I need this next mission to go smoothly, and there are some potential disruptive actors that need reigning in. That's where your expertise comes into play. D: My expertise went out the window the second you made me a hostage. Surely you're aware of the research that indicates I'll tell you whatever you want to hear, or do superficially whatever you say, for the sake of self preservation? At what point did you ignore conventional interaction for pure transactional gain? A: Right on cue. The literature you suggest has only been applied to prisoners of war; you are not a part of that cohort. Also, that's your first attempt at stalling. I'm indulging because I think it's relevant to your duty. I trust that you've read Thaler's work? D: Nudge? His book on behavioral economics? Sure! I love it because he describes humanity as a set of imperfect beings that are generally predictable, but not perfectly rational. Lest I remind you, the point was SUBTLE ADJUSTMENTS. This is totally too far. A: Is it? When the world's very existence is at stake? When I do things my way, there is as close to a guarantee of success as any monte-carlo forecast may show. Trying to prove me wrong is trying to lower the odds. A gambling man like yourself should know the house always wins. D: So you've done as much planning as anyone can reasonably expect. Somehow, I'm integral to this. That means my demise lowers your odds as well. A: Not exactly. I need A psychiatrist, not specifically you as the psychiatrist. You merely have some insight into the assets that could be useful. D: Then the rate limiting step is time. So your hypothesis is that threatening instant death in a civilian is likely to lead to faster contrition than...oh I don't know...convincing any professional that SAVING THE WORLD is worth the effort? Just how risky is this? Or did that part of the expected value curve get left off the page because you forgot how to manage that? A: Since you're about to lead into more stalling, I'll curtail your inquisition: JOKER. D: *pause* Awwwwwww...man...AWWWWWWWW COME ON! Are you expecting me to cure the Joker? Under duress, I think it's necessary to inform you that-  A: I'm aware of your prior encounters. You are ideal, regardless of the outcomes. You didn't back down. That's more than most can say. All I need is for you to string him along so nothing else goes wrong with the others involved. D: HE ELECTROCUTED ME! A: And you continued treating dozens of superpowered beings, deranged humans and other sentient forms. This is quite the honor, to be hand picked to serve the greater good, even at the most inconvenient of times. D: You suck up to me now AFTER you put the bomb in me?!!! Lady, I respect your hustle and grit, but you got this all backwards. Don't think I'll let this be cheap. A: Money is irrelevant, you know that. D: Well clearly to you because apparently you don't want FRIENDLY mediums of exchange. I can't remember someone sounding so noble while being so...mean. Who hurt you bad enough for you to give up on everyone...and yet still “care” about the world? That's some traumatic dissonance. A: *restrained anger* You REALLY are trying to be a therapist right now, after all of the warnings? This is getting long, Doctor. Or, would you rather I call you Ar- D: PLEASE! I do all of this because I want to help. Truly. I...I'm going to be honest. Anything I try with you, or the Joker at this point,  is beyond what I'm comfortable with as a professional. I meant what I said earlier. I just want this to stop. I hope you save the world. I also hope that you find the emotional center that you lost when your family died. A: ...and that's the line *explosion* Shame. I wasn't sure if he'd try to make it personal. That was pointless. *text/phone sound* What now...Harvey Dent Automated Legal team? Why…*more notifications keep ringing* private settlement based on medical alert on behalf of Dr. Issues? Insurance review for physical and mental health damages by an unknown organization? Discovery hearing with local, state AND federal committees? JUSTICE LEAGUE VIDEO CHAT? I don't have time for this! *calls phone* It's Waller. We're going to need 4 neurosurgeons and an ortho spine surgeon here immediately. NO, we don't need more bombs. Not yet, anyway. We'll...go on hiatus with that for a little while. I took a picture of the kids and they were so excited because they loved having their own YouTube channel. As they were wearing these t-shirts, I was like, "Our kids have a brand.  Our eight-year-old and our six-year-old literally have their own brand."   They're learning the fundamentals that's going to help them build their own businesses later.  It's an opportunity you just never even think about when you're living the society life, the normal life, the 9-to-5 life, and you're doing things the way the world tells you to do it.   If you haven't subscribed to their YouTube channel yet, please do! :-D You can go to FLKids.tv and that will take you to their YouTube channel, and please subscribe because they're obsessed with the number of subscribers.    And like their videos, please like their videos.  It will make their day, and that's what it's all about.  It's just keeping them positive, keeping them encouraged.   The goal is to help them create content, understand that they have a brand that has an identity, and just lay the foundation for their future endeavors whenever they get into this stuff.   I really encourage you guys as you go through your online journey, we, as parents have a tendency to step away from our kids, and not let them be a part of it.  Include them.  If you are a recording a podcast, record a podcast with your kids.  If you're doing videos, do it with your kids.  Not only will you be able to spend more time together, but you will change their life with what you teach them along the way.

I never thought about sex with Barbara Corcoran. I still don't. But she brought it up. We were talking about entrepreneurship. And she said how old she was when she lost her virginity. Twenty-three. I wanted to know how she turned a thousand dollars into a five billion dollar company. Then: $1,000. Now: $5,000,000,000. I wanted to know how she founded The Corcoran Group, the largest company in real estate. And how you become the type of entrepreneur Barbara Corcoran chooses on Shark Tank. I'm going to tell you how to get Barbara's investment. If that's what you want. But not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur. According to Barbara. "I found a real difference between the superstars and everyone else," she says.   And I agree. That's why I wrote The Rich Employee. Entrepreneurship isn't everything. But it can be. Barbara reviews thousands of investment opportunities. And most hear "no."  She says you have to have "a nose for entrepreneurship." That's how you get a "yes," from Barbara Corcoran. But before you start doubting yourself, take the test. You'll find out how in this interview. Jump to [39:25]. It's scary. She says, if you weren't born with "it," (the nose for entrepreneurship, the "innate intelligence,") then "you shouldn't be an entrepreneur in the first place."  And you need specific characteristics: A) Handle rejection. You can't cry. Or feel sorry for yourself. The top people in Barbara's company made four million dollars a year in commissions. They took hits. Just as many as the others. Or more. "Because they were trying for more," she says, "But the real difference was how long they took to feel sorry for themselves." Get over rejection. And try again. B) Conserve energy. Monitor yourself. Just notice. I feel tired. Why? I'm not motivated. I'm drained. Burnt out. Why? Your energy leaks out. Through fear, regret, negative people, bad situations. Conserve it. Refocus. And put it to good use.  C) You shouldn't quit your job I ran my side business for 18 months before quitting my full-time job. I had eleven employees. But I'm not special. Really. Because that's what all of Barbara's "successful" entrepreneurs do. They keep their jobs.  D) You need to be "hungry, mean and insecure." "That's been my track record with the businesses I've invested," she says. You need to have something to prove. But nice is ok for me. I'll take nice.  E) Daydream. "Vision is daydreaming and seeing yourself in a role and seeing what your business is going to become," she says. Picture it. Use your imagination. Escape into the dream. She says, "I don't know any entrepreneurs who don't visualize." Listen to today's episode. Are you really an entrepreneur?  Maybe you don't know. But after listening to today's podcast, you will.
