Send us a textWild bets, hot streaks, and a little market seduction. The acid capitalist is back, sunburnt and shirtless, broadcasting straight from St. Barts with sand in his toes and a dollar short in his hand. This is Confessions Part II, the origin story sharpened, scuffed, and refitted for today's volatility junkies. If finance had a Tarantino cut, this is it.We rewind to the end of 2002. The Nasdaq's wreckage still smoldering. The S&P up 9 percent. Me? Flat for the month, down 4.9 percent since launch. A hedge fund rookie trading like he's strapped to a rocket and reading tea leaves in reverse. There were no parades. No consensus. Just my gut, and it was twitching.I placed my first real bet, short the dollar. The Dixie was at 110. Five years later, it would bleed to 70. Back then, they laughed. Now they squint at the same charts, claiming they saw it coming. They didn't. But I did. Commodities stopped dying. Gold stopped bleeding. Something turned. And I felt it.This episode isn't about P/E ratios. It's about instinct. Rage. Faith. Hunger. It's about building Eclectica not as a fund but as a fever dream. I didn't chase storms. I waited for them. I didn't knock. I picked the lock. That investor? That was me.We talk Amsterdam Commodities, no website, no pitch deck, no interest in seduction. It smelled of hash and history. It was cheap, opaque, and irresistible. And it hit. Like a ten-bagger. Like something better than sex. No, seriously, would you rather have a one-night stand or a tenfold return on your weirdest position?Oh, and then there's Brazil. The one that ghosted me. The stock I dumped, live, while staring through the glass of their too-polished HQ. They didn't show me respect. So I showed them the door. This is the cockpit view of macro. Of madness. Of the market as mythology. No suits. No soft landings. Just you, me, and a twitch in the eye of the storm. Hugh Hendry is an award-winning hedge fund manager, investment thought leader, and surfer. He founded Eclectica in 2005, a London-based global macro fund known for its high-conviction, contrarian approach. Shortly after launching Eclectica, Hugh gained recognition with impressive returns of 50% in its second year and over 30% in 2008 during the height of the Global Financial Crisis. Although Eclectica has since closed, Hugh remains an active and influential market commentator. Reflecting his commitment to creative freedom in investing, he once said, “I have always been a heretic and argued against the consensus. I have always been angry.” Join us for a lively discussion with Hugh as we explore today's investment landscape, hear his views on the U.S. election, his skepticism toward mainstream economic policies, and his belief in the value of reading broadly as a source of inspiration for business and investing.

Hugh Hendry says the world is brimming with risks right now, from Chinese deflation, to the strength of the US dollar, to unrealized losses in US Treasuries held by the bank. In the new episode of the podcast, we speak with the former manager of the Eclectica hedge fund, who now writes and operates under the Acid Capitalist branding. Hendry, who now resides in St. Bart's, says that the most important story in the world, and for as long as he's been in markets, has been the rise of China, which he sees as inflating asset values all around the world. Specifically, he sees a broken model, in which the country's GDP grows rapidly, but domestic investments and household income don't keep up. He warns of a risk of a yuan devaluation, as the country seeks to maintain its export drive which, he warns would create "Mad Max" deflation. He also talks about the "terrifying" drop in the Japanese yen, and the unusual situation by which the US is one of the world's growth leaders. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Acid Capitalist Hugh Hendry (@Hendry_Hugh) joins Julia La Roche again for an unfiltered conversation on macro, markets, Bitcoin, the Fed, and more. Hendry founded Eclectica Asset Management, a global macro hedge fund that was pretty much uncorrelated to everything in the financial universe. Hugh started Eclectica in 2002 and ran for 15 years before closing in 2017. He made more than 30% in 2008 betting against banks. These days, Hendry is a luxury hotelier on St. Barts, where he spends his time surfing and still thinking about macro. He also hosts a weekly podcast called "Acid Capitalist" and shares his views on Instagram, Twitter, and Substack. 0:00 Intro 1:18 Macro picture, ‘my imagination is as dark as it was in 2007' 5:00 “I'm fearful”, already in recession as we speak 8:18 Want to own equities right now 12:30 Bitcoin 15:00 Sitting with cash, waiting to buy 17:58 Been in a depression since 2008 22:30 Banking sector 27:30 Eurodollar system 32:00 Entrepreneurial dream has been replaced 34:50 Inflation Reduction Act is actually smart 38:00 A recession of a similar magnitude to 2008-2009 42:47 The five who know 45:30 Music and charts 47:30 Twitter 49:23 Parting thoughts

Dvořák's Dumky Trio stays true to its folk music roots with 6 movements incorporating an earthy and rustic musical flavour with movements alternating in sombre, commemorative, nostalgic, and playful personalities.

In this episode of Rock is Lit, Richard Fulco, author of the new novel ‘We Are All Together', is here to take us on a rockin' jaunt through the late 1960s, where we'll encounter several iconic players on the music and literature scene from that era. If you're a fan of the Summer of Love and all the trimmings that go with it, you'll love his novel and this episode. Later, Elliott Landy drops by to talk even more about the 1960s music scene, a period he should know a lot about since he's been photographing rock stars since the mid-60s. Best known for his classic rock photographs, Elliott Landy was one of the first music photographers to be recognized as an “artist.” His celebrated works include album cover photographs for Bob Dylan's ‘Nashville Skyline', The Band's ‘Music From Big Pink' and ‘The Band' album, and Van Morrison's ‘Moondance'. He's also taken portraits of such rock icons as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. He was the official photographer of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. And . . . Elliott has a new book out, entitled ‘Photographs of Janis Joplin On the Road & On Stage', featuring 129 photos, including 100 unpublished, accompanied by Janis's own words from recorded interviews by David Dalton of ‘Rolling Stone' magazine. This week the legendary Acid Capitalist Hugh Hendry joins Nick for a truly different perspective. Previously at Baillie Gifford and Odey Asset Management Hugh's Eclectica macro hedge fund was famously up 50% in 2003 and up 50% in the month of October in 2008. Monikered as a contrarian investor Hugh certainly has some very different views as Nick runs through a tally of macro thoughts and themes. Hugh's book choice was The Gap in the Curtain by John Buchan. Contrarian macro investor and thinker Hugh Hendry (@Hendry_Hugh) joins Julia La Roche for a two-hour, unfiltered conversation that covers everything, from his early years in the hedge fund world to why he's currently fearful of the economy. In this episode, Hugh discusses his time “healing” from the hedge fund world while living on St. Barts for the past five years. He revisits his earliest years, how he got into markets, and his investment process while running his hedge fund. Hugh also explains why he's fearful of the economy and unpacks his views on why he thinks we're currently in the fourth depression in the last 200 years that he argues will end in “a revolution in money.” Hugh is also critical of the Federal Reserve and believes they're making a mistake with rate hikes while debt is “at warning levels.” The conversation also covers inflation, class warfare, the problems with ESG, current opportunities in the market, why he thinks gold is a “stupid” investment, and his thoughts on Bitcoin. He also hosts a weekly podcast called “Acid Capitalist” and shares his views on Instagram, Twitter, and Substack.
Susan Hatters Friedman, MD discusses MISTAKES WRITERS MAKE ABOUT FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY AND HOW TO AVOID THEM. She talks about the differences between forensic psychiatry and forensic psychology; the rules governing psychiatric confidentiality; the fact that forensic psychiatrists are not lie detectors; the depiction of competency versus sanity in fiction (and which is easier to argue in court); and lines a psychiatrist (at least a reputable one) wouldn't cross. Do any of those topics pique your interest? Check out 2 MINUTES OF INDY https://bit.ly/2MinutesOfIndy, where over the week following the airing of the episode, you'll find brief video clips from the interview on each of those topics. She currently serves as President of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Susan received the Manfred Guttmacher Award from the American Psychiatric Association for editing the book “Family Murder: Pathologies of Love and Hate.” She is pursuing a Masters in Crime Fiction at the University of Cambridge and has studied with The Second City, the world's premier comedy club, comedy theater, and school of improvisation. Macro Confessions Part XX III (November 2005) This week the boys kick back. Inspired by Jeff Bezos, and his recent jaunt to St Barts, Hugh reveals his 20 hour fast and avocado regime. He believes that longevity and contrarian investing are bedfellows. Chris shakes his head in disbelief. The conversation is fast paced. Chris has his runner's legs on and wants to know more about what's knocking the capital markets this week. Bonds, not James but the ongoing disturbance in the US Treasury market are discussed. Better to construct an inventory of ideas than trade a market whose long-term trend has yet to change course, cautions Hugh. Check your premises! No new Hedge Fund wannabee can afford to miss this journey from the past to the present day where Hugh reveals his latest macro insights and explains how sometimes he outwitted the market's smartest minds. This week they take on The Raiders of the Lost Ark, via Cathy Wood's flailing tech fund, and ask why markets generate mysticism to create retail super-star managers and why their unwieldy funds often hit the skids.Shorting is this week's focus. Why do it? The epic short squeeze of Volkswagen in the midsts of the chaos of October 2008 is explored. Hugh shares his November 2005 Eclectica investment letter to lavish praise on John Armitage, a legendary British hedge fund manager who stopped shorting entirely. The cautionary tale of AW Jones, the manager who first brought L/S strategies to the public's attention, is examined. You wont believe the paradox of what befell him in 1969.No one is spared. Hugh loved Ken Fisher's book Superstocks but less the man himself. The gloves are well and truly off and at the end Hugh confesses that he's starting to see a re-awakening in the gold sector. Really? Is that possible? Chris' insatiable curiosity remains dialled to the max. Tune-in or be square...

"Searching For Jimmy Page" is the fictional story of Luna Kane. The unraveling of eighteen-year-old Luna's haunted past begins in the winter of 1988, when her dying great-grandfather, a self-proclaimed faith healer, claims he hears phantom owls crying in the night. “Them owls, like music. Can you hear the music?” he implores her in his final moments, triggering Luna's repressed memory of her dead mother's obsession with Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin's legendary guitar wizard. Desperate to learn the truth about her mother's suicide, to tease fact from family lore in order to weave her own personal narrative, Luna embarks on a pilgrimage from her family's farm in the pines of eastern North Carolina to England, to search for the man whose music her mother held sacred, Jimmy Page.Christy Alexander Hallberg teaches literature and writing online at East Carolina University. Olivia Farkas (she/her) is the founder of Eclectica Division. After growing up in a musical family and spending many nights frequenting local venues in Philly, she saw how difficult it was for women to make their way into the scene. Cherie Jones' debut novel ‘How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House‘ has been receiving rave reviews from the likes of Bernardine Evaristo, who called it "A hard-hitting and unflinching novel from a bold new writer". Her short stories have variously been published in PANK, Cadenza, Eclectica, The Feminist Wire and broadcast on BBC Radio 4. She's a fellowship awardee of the Vermont Studio Centre and completed her MA with distinction at Sheffield Hallam University, where she was awarded the Archie Markham Award and the A.M Heath prize. We chat to Cherie to hear how she juggles her day job as a lawyer with writing (clue: she gets up VERY early!) and hear about her route to publishing. We also talk about how her stories begin with one character's voice speaking to her, and hear about why she wanted to write such a hard-hitting novel.Links:Buy How the One Armed Sister Sweeps Her HouseVisit Cherie's websiteFollow Cherie on TwitterWatch our video panel Page One Sessions as we discuss writing with great authors: https://youtu.be/gmE6iCDYn-sThe Page One Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. I try and answer your questions relating to my recent twitter outburst regarding the role of negative interest rates. I explain how the external trading value of the dollar is being held hostage. That the US has lost its exorbitant privilege. Yes, it can still print money, should its private sector banks be willing, however it can no longer lower the external value of the dollar vis-a-vis its trading partners. The mercantilists have gained the upper-hand. I try and explain how negative US dollar rates might represent a valid and rational attempt to free the US from such serfdom. Give me 48 hours and I'll clean up the transcript. And I'm putting together a video montage for my YouTube channel - ever wondered how the Treasury pleading with the G7 would look inside my head? Stay tuned.
