Interview by Angela CroudaceCelebrating two decades of making music, Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders recently opened up about the band's journey, the impact of their classic album A Lesson in Romantics, and the excitement surrounding their 20th-anniversary celebrations.“It's wild,” Sanders says of the milestone. Reflecting on how the band, formed in Tallahassee, Florida, had no idea where their musical path would take them, he describes the rollercoaster ride of watching the band's growth from young dreamers to global musicians. “It feels like it's both gone really fast, but also does kind of feel like 20 years,” he admits. Despite the speed of it all, Sanders is deeply grateful for the experiences that have come with Mayday Parade's success. The band's debut album has become a staple of pop-punk, still resonating with fans worldwide. Sanders speaks proudly of the record, remembering the raw energy they poured into it and the overwhelming joy of still playing tracks from it today. “I'm so proud of what it's become,” he says. “The fact that we can still play songs from that record and get the reactions we do is insane.”Having toured with bands like All Time Low and Simple Plan, Mayday Parade has built a rich history of unforgettable experiences. One of Sanders' earliest and most meaningful memories comes from a show in their hometown, where they opened for Further Seems Forever. “I got to sing with them on stage,” Sanders recalls, describing the experience as a full-circle moment in their career. When asked about his current musical inspirations, Sanders points to artists like Dashboard Confessional and Ben Folds. Though these influences have remained staples throughout his life, his recent obsession with Dashboard Confessional has reignited a deep appreciation for Chris Carrabba's songwriting and vocal prowess. In celebration of their 20 years, Mayday Parade are releasing a three-part album project, with the first instalment out soon. Sanders teases that the album balances their classic sound with fresh, new elements. “It feels like a good step forward for our band,” he says, hinting at exciting new musical directions. As for their upcoming tour, including their return to Australia, Sanders shares the excitement of playing bigger shows with a full production. “These will be the biggest shows we've had in Australia,” he says, reminiscing about their past tours with All Time Low and the fun times spent at Melbourne's Heartbreaker bar.Looking back at the past 20 years, Sanders reflects on the importance of staying creatively in control. The band's journey has been full of lessons, including navigating major label pressures, but he's proud of how they've found their footing. And with a legacy spanning two decades, Mayday Parade is still just as dedicated to their music and fans as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

SummaryWeather Report: The Art & Activism Forecast from MinneapolisIn this episode, we kick off a new Change the Story feature—The Weather Report—where we check in with creative change-makers across the country to get a pulse on how art and activism are faring in their communities.First stop: Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our guest is David O'Fallon, a longtime cultural leader with deep roots in the Twin Cities and beyond. From his early days with In the Heart of the Beast Theatre to leadership roles at the Kennedy Center, National Endowment for the Arts, and Minnesota Humanities Center, David brings a wide-angle lens to the intersection of arts, policy, and social change.Together, we dig into how Minneapolis artists, activists, and community groups are navigating the storm—from the unresolved tensions of George Floyd Square to the challenges of rebuilding trust in the face of political upheaval and media manipulation. We talk about the power of creative communities to imagine and build new futures, the rebirth of the beloved May Day Parade, and an emerging movement to reclaim America's story—on our terms.Along the way, we hit on big themes: resistance, reckoning, and resurgence. How do artists and organizers hold space for healing and action? How do we keep showing up when systems are designed to wear us down? And what does it mean to embrace practical, tactical, coalition-building work—without getting lost in ideological purity?David shares his work with a Black-led healing and writing group in George Floyd Square, his thoughts on the political climate's impact on the arts, and a vision for a People's Celebration of America in 2026, where all voices, all stories, and all struggles get their due. This is about more than survival—it's about finding the creative, collective courage to build what's next.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 129: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN: A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The disgraced Special Hunter Biden Counsel is so terrified about what could happen next to the Russian Plant/FBI "Informant" Alexander Smirnov that he had him RE-arrested yesterday, in a different state, in a second and very unusual bid to deny Smirnov bail. A senior Republican congressman is so terrified (and enraged) about what could happen next to Smirnov that HE has broken ranks and confirmed that Jim Jordan and James Comer knew from the start that Smirnov's "Form 1023" stank and hadn't been corroborated and Smirnov had more red flags than a May Day Parade - and lied to the public anyway and nearly fulfilled Vladimir Putin's desire to see a president impeached eight months before the American election, and his son imprisoned. But the Attorney General Merrick Garland - who was so lazy and incompetent that when they brought Smirnov's fabrications to him he fell for them and appointed the Special Counsel anyway - is HE terrified or enraged about what could happen next to Smirnov? Nope. He's done nothing. While another Russian-Republican plot to alter the outcome of the election has played out almost entirely in public view. This is largely Merrick Garland's fault. If he doesn't suspend the Biden Counsel, David Weiss, and if he doesn't appoint a new one immediately to grill Comer and Jordan and Weiss and all the others, President Biden must fire him. We're under attack here. It's another coup attempt. It seems to link to Trump or at least Russia's desire to return Trump to power. And Garland is trying to clean his glasses. And it is absolutely true that this is the most important political story of the moment, and it needs to be framed as Brian Beutler framed it: What did the Republicans know, and when did they know it? B-Block (22:00) IN SPORTS: Meet Auston Matthews, the Mike Trout of Hockey. It's 44 years since the US beat Russia at the Lake Placid Olympics (I'll report from 1980) and the extraordinary revelation by my friend Jack Edwards, play-by-play man of the Boston Bruins. (30:17) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: C-PAC is back so the Nazi loonies are loonier than ever: Charlie Kirk, Jack Posobiec, General Flynn, Matt Schlapp say stuff like "this is where we end Democracy," and "I'd like to see television killings of Trump's opponents" and "Trump is still president." C-Block (38:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: You guys! I have now MET Smiles the Bernese! (38:35) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: a collection of his very political, still very relevant Political Fables: “The Mouse Who Went To The Country,” “The Very Proper Gander,” “The Moth And The Star,” “The Owl Who Was God,” “The Birds And The Foxes,” “The Peacelike Mongoose.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mayday has been able to remain extremely hard-working and consistent for over 15 years in a landscape full of ups & downs and unhealthiness. We had the pleasure of interviewing L E A over Zoom video!L E A debuts her infectious, anthemic new single “FTS (Sick of This)” featuring viral artist, producer, and Emo Nite New Orleans DJ Bemo Rouge. The track permeates with inspiration that is equal parts pop, emo, pop-punk, and hip-hop to formulate a distinct sound that only L E A could conjure up. It is a quintessential track to represent the modern iterations of punk that music fans are thirsting for. The uplifting, instantly catchy melody is the backdrop for her story as a struggling artist as she finally unlocks the success that she strived to achieve:“This song is about knowing you're about to break into the scene as an alternative artist, getting ready to prove to people who told you you wouldn't make it while struggling financially and mentally to balance it all alone.” - L E AGrowing up in the small, yet touristy beach town of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, L E A was homegrown from every and all kinds of rock n roll. The Los Angeles-based artist has intertwined the boldness of punk with the beachiness of pop turning her into the alternative pop act she is today. Inspired by artists such as Mayday Parade, Charlotte Sands, Secondhand Serenade, Magnolia Park, and many more from the iconic Warped Tour era, L E A considers her sound colorful, extroverted, aggressive, and blunt. Having a heavy musical background, lower-timbre rock vocals, and an obsession with the colorful world around her, L E A is sure to stand out in a crowd and make her presence known. After all, she is a Leo.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Taylor Acorn over Zoom video.Nashville based singer/songwriter, Taylor Acorn, is gearing up for her FIRST EVER tour supporting Real Friends. The tour will be visiting over 25 cities across North America including stops in Toronto,ON, Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY, Pomona, CA and more before wrapping on Tuesday, November 1st in Minneapolis, MN at The Garage. In August, Taylor shared her latest single, “Psycho,” an empowering pop rock anthem about taking your power back from a partner that has been gaslighting you and turning into the “bad guy” they think you are.Growing up in the early 90's & 2000's pop punk/ pop rock scene, for Taylor Acorn it was never a phase. Hailing from the small North Central Pennsylvania town of Wellsboro, Taylor had always dreamed of a career in music and in 2014, dropped out of Kutztown University to pursue just that, setting her sights for Nashville in 2017.She first left her mark in the country music world with her 2017 single “Put It In a Song” followed up by an EP she wrote solely on her own, which now garners nearly 50 Million streams, releasing several singles to follow. However, she never felt at home creating country music and in the midst of the 2020 pandemic went back to her pop punk roots with her cover of “Jamie All Over” on TikTok, sparking the attention of many elder emo fans as well as Mayday Parade themselves.Since then, she has gained the attention of many emo/pop punk bands with her newly rendered versions of their songs. Covers aren't the only thing that's been grasping the attention of fans though. With her infectiously relatable releases of “Do That Again”, “In My Head” and “Shapeshifting”, Taylor is now leaving her own footprint in the pop punk community giving her fans a place to feel safe and to feel heard, by tackling tough subjects such as mental health by sharing her own personal struggles. She wants to give her listeners a space where they can feel free and vulnerable, a place where healing is accepted no matter who you are or where you've come from.We want to hear from you! Philly emo/alternative rock crew White Shores came to life in 2020 and, bonded by a love of 00s and 10s alternative rock and pop-punk, delivered debut EP, 'The Decay' of December that year. Nodding to the likes of Mayday Parade, Yellowcard and The Wonder Years, the East Coast outfit marry a dexterous melting pot of influences, showcasing a deft balance of emo, melodic punk and power-pop. Showing plenty of potential, as well as the fierceness and honesty that would come to define their sound, White Shores quickly picked up regional acclaim, debuting on Philadelphia's Alt 104.5. FUN FACT: "They landed on White Shores", a quote from epic film Lord the Rings – Return of the King is where the band's name derives from. New EP, 'Rain Upon The Glass' is out now. I want my compassion and respect for that to come through in my songs.” Lang returned to music-making in 2017, releasing his debut album Welcome To Yesterday, which South Carolina Music Writer Kevin Oliver hailed as “evocative storytelling at its finest.”   The Post & Courier Free times included Welcome to Yesterday on its “But What About THIS Album” list in their Best South Carolina Music 2019 edition. “Songs about something that seems like nothing but feels like everything” is how Lang describes She's My Memory, set for release in June 2022. Exemplifying Lang's comment “There's always a story,” the album's title track tells of a man with Alzheimer's who glimpses his life through anecdotes of humble but defining marital moments told by his wife. This ten song collection will strike a chord with listeners who endeavor to live with love and purpose in a swirling world of relentless change.   Hello London is the solo project of musician James Froese. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, his sound is influenced by many indie, alternative and punk bands from The Smiths to Mayday Parade. In 2021 he released two EP's, At The End of The World and Stay That Way, and in 2022 Hello London will be releasing their debut LP.

Today's episode of Bardown features our new friends all the way up in still-snowy-in-May North Dakota, Brooklane! We were joined by Chance and Alex, and we discussed their relationship with We Are Triumphant, how their full-length came together, working with Mayday Parade's vocalist for a killer feature, and how growing up in North Dakota drew them to their love of alternative music. We also talk about their newest single, Breakaway, which just dropped and what's on the horizon for the boys in Brooklane. Catch all that and more on the newest episode and check them out so you can say you liked them before they got huge! Power chords and crashing boards. Mikey and Tom talk music, hockey, and anything else that gets in their way. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 15 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are also diehard New York Islanders fans, but as we like to say we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We have realized we are not alone in this thinking, actually there are many of us that love these two things! This podcast explores just how connected they are!
