Stacie Humbles, Principal at Susan's alma mater, Arlington High School, has led the charge at analyzing the affects of the past two years not only on the students, but the teachers and staff at her school. This podcast is very unique and insightful into the difficulty of keeping a community in the midst of the pandemic fallout trauma. the emotional evolution of students and teachers during the pandemic the social skill issues of returning students how education is actively participating in healing The trauma responses of fight, flight, freeze or fawn  how being kind ultimately helps others heal “There are a lot of similarities between the systems of healthcare and education, with the biggest one being dealing with real people, at some of their rawest moments.” “Everyone came to us for the answers when the pandemic started but we didn't know the answers. We knew the experts but didn't necessarily have immediate answers.” “The August after virtual learning was created, there was already the beginnings of burn-out.” “Everyone kept telling us to find balance but we couldn't figure that out as we were working 20 hour days, so we began working on Counter Balance.” “We thought we would only be dealing with students who would be missing math or English skills and thought we could quickly bring them back up but that's when we were really surprised.” “Social skills for kids and adults were gone. Everyone was absorbed in their screens.” “We rewarded the kids for looking people in the eye, using a pleasant voice, saying hi - they would get bingo dabbed on the hand if they did. The kids got into it and the adults loved the results.” “I don't think we looked at the COVID as trauma on everyone in the beginning. At one point we had to realize that we were not normal either. Everyone went through trauma.” “Everyone was treating every situation as it was the most extreme crisis.” “The trauma responses took their toll on the workforce. Burnout.” “Everyone is not as high performing as they were before the pandemic.” “If you are feeling burned out, then we need to know why and figure out our role in it. Burnout has to be dealt with on the organizational level, not the individual level.” “Everyone needs their organization to have a means to work through burnout.” “Wear your badge everywhere and have others start a conversation with you – in the service industry and can engage in conversation, that is key.” “Trying to get people in for the interview then to choose us was interesting. We would do anything and everything to stand out.” “There are people that really want that human connection but they are very awkward in having it because we are out of practice and think we can just jump right in and have those conversations.” “People just wanted a battle, ready for a fight, the speak to the manager era. No one wanted a resolution but just wanted someone to get in trouble. That is still happening today.” “Now, during the last three years of pandemic that no one knew what was going on, restructuring society and now rebuilding, we are the ones that are to be here to get humanity through this.”   LINKS & RESOURCES The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan Sylvia Fuentes: Trauma and Toxic Stress Burnout Self-Test  https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTCS_08.htm Susan's Website: https://susangunnsolutions.com/ SGS Phone: 888-994-3167 Money In, Money Out Book Matters Of The Heart Financial Practice Analysis Ask The Expert Conference Call

We all know this, but what exactly is stress, why do we have it, and most importantly, what can we do to combat it? As you'll see the film and tv industry is full of risk factors to our mental health. It seems like there's always more to do. Rest never refreshes though.  The World Health Organization calls burnout a “workplace syndrome.” It may not be a medical condition, but it sure feels that way, it can lead to medical conditions, and it has mental, physical, and spiritual consequences. This sense of chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and lack of efficacy can lead you to doubt your calling, even while in your dream job. Even the little things start to seem too much – “I can't even” becomes normal.  But it doesn't need to be that way.Sit with Chaplain Mike and Lisa the Social Worker as we discuss burnout – what it is, what contributes to it, and our own experiences with it. We also explore how to address it, from small wins to self-care, but also actions that managers can do invigorate their people. We finish with a big (bittersweet) announcement as our season finale!Want to provide feedback or ask a question for a future episode? Today's Minisode is on Positive Affirmations. This episode is based around the below article:https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/affirmations.htmBoosting Your Self-Esteem:https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTCS_80.htmSummary Of Creating your Positive Affirmation:(1) Think about the areas of your life that you’d like to change: We can use positive affirmations to control negative feelings such as frustration or overcome a bad habit. So think about a positive change you’d like to see in your life. Write down a few ideas. (2) Be sure that your affirmation is credible and achievable. For example, if you want to start exercising, don’t vow to run 5 miles right off the bat; ease into it. Mind Tools uses the example of raising your confidence to ask for a raise, rather than affirming that you will magically double your salary. How we phrase things matter and perspective is key. (3) Remember to Turn negatives into positives. Visit the Cognitive Restructuring if you need to, to remove that negative self-talk and replace it with a positive affirmation. (4) Write your affirmation in the present tense. Use “I am” phrases; speak the statement as if it is already happening; make it true in this moment. (5) Say it with feeling. Be resolute in your affirmation; actually want this change to occur. It needs to be meaningful to you. It needs to resonate and compliment your morals and core values. Here are a few examples:I can do this!I am successful.I have plenty of creativity for this project.I am excellent at what I do!I am a leader in my organization. If you'd like to hang out with me more, check out my YouTube Channel - TierTwo WorksSuggestions, Comments, and Requests are Welcomed!Email me directly at readingwithcari@gmail.comPodcast Elevator Pitch:Settle into bed, tuck in the covers, and snuggle up as Cari reads you a bedtime story; or grab a copy and read along! Today's Minisode is on Cognitive Restructuring. QUESTIONNAIRE MENTIONED:(1) First, select a troubling thought that you are having difficulty letting go. This could be a worry or an anxiety that has been following you like a dark cloud. I often think I am not good enough to reach a goal, or talented enough to be successful, or smart enough to finish a task. What is bothering you the most right now? (2) I am going to ask a series of questions that I want you to consider. We are going to figure out if the thought you have is actually True. What is the evidence or proof that this thought or fear is true?Is there any evidence that disproves my thought? What is the evidence that this thought may not be true? Are there any facts I’m ignoring or have overlooked?Am I discounting any small things that contradict my thought that I may consider unimportant?Am I using any words that are extreme or exaggerated? Words like “Should, Must, Always, Never”Am I reading someone else’s mind and treating it as fact? (3) Now we’re going to examine any other possibilities or possible explanations this thought might have. Is there any other way to view this idea or thought? If my friend was having this thought, what would I tell them?If my friend knew I was having this thought, what might they say to me?When I’m not feeling this way, do I look at this situation any differently? If I were to look back on this in five years, might I look at it any differently?Am I blaming myself for something I don’t have control over?Have I had any experiences that show that this thought isn’t always true?Am I ignoring any strengths that I have? Are there any positives that exist in this situation that I haven’t considered?(4) Now we’re going to think about what you can do to help deal with this thought or situation. What have I learned from previous experiences that can help me now? When I’ve felt this way in the past, what did I think about that helped me feel better? What’s the worst that could realistically happen? What’s the most likely thing that could happen? If the worst did happen, what could I do to help myself cope?If you’re still having difficulty or if you’d like more information, visit: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTCS_81.htm Suggestions, Comments, and Requests are Welcomed!Email me directly at readingwithcari@gmail.comIf you'd like to hang out with me more, check out my YouTube Channel - TierTwo WorksINTRO & OUTRO SONG CREDITS:Easy Lemon 30 Second by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200078Artist: http://incompetech.com/
