Adult ballet dancer and volunteer studio manager at Dance Theatre Northwest in Washington, Sarah Witherup, joined the studio this month! We spoke about how ballet became not just a passion for her, but a lifeline. As a highly trained endurance athlete, Sarah is no stranger to challenges. But after the loss of her son and at the age of 49, Sarah stepped into a ballet studio for the first time and says it was one of the most difficult and fulfilling steps she's taken. Discovering ballet began a journey that would intertwine with her gender transition, self-discovery, and healing. In this episode, she talks about what it means to enter the traditional and highly structured world of ballet as a transgender woman, how dance became a vital part of stepping fully into her identity, and the challenges and joys she's encountered along the way—from pointe classes and performing on stage to unexpected in studio laughs and dress code dilemmas. Sarah also shares the work she's doing to make ballet more inclusive, including establishing a nonbinary dress code and an adult ballet intensive at Dance Theatre Northwest.Sarah's story reminds dancers to rethink what grace and strength can look like, to take up space inside and outside of the ballet studio, and to consider the importance of finding a place to belong.Follow Sarah on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/witherup2019/Learn more about Dance Theatre Northwest: https://dtnw.org/Check out Dance Theatre Northwest's Adult Ballet Intensive: https://dtnw.org/adult-summer-intensive-program/Learn about Wear Blue: Run to Remember: https://www.wearblueruntoremember.org/Follow The Adult Ballet Studio on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@eblosfield91*This episode discusses suicide, depression and PTSD. Before he was deemed “the Glue” by his castmates at Saturday Night Live, Phil Hartman worked as a rock ‘n roll roadie and a graphic designer. He created album covers for the bands Poco and America, as well as the logo for Crosby, Stills & Nash. He did those things as a card-carrying member of the peace and love movement. A movement that was infamously disrupted by the Manson family, a ragtag group of hippies gone evil that just so happened to include one of his former friends from high school. A friend who would later attempt to assassinate an American president. A friend who helped steer sunny California into an age of darkness. A darkness that, for Phil Hartman, led to secrets, blackmail, guns, and ultimately, a murder-suicide. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including suicide. Robin Williams' manic mind moved at such a breakneck speed that cocaine had the opposite effect than it had on most other people: it slowed him down. Robin's primary addiction, however, wasn't cocaine. He was addicted to the dopamine rush of being on a stage, where he could let his mind run wild with free association, and be rewarded with uproarious laughter. He was addicted to proving himself as a dramatic actor, even if that meant attempting to trigger his own mental breakdown by running in place for hours. And when he died tragically at the age of 63, the cause of his death was surprisingly not what anyone suspected. It still isn't. Sharon Tate was a sophisticated beauty who literally stopped traffic when she walked down the street. Decades later, however, she is perhaps best-remembered as one of the victims found brutally murdered at her Cielo Drive home, the one she shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski. Sharon and Roman welcomed regular guests to that home, including Sharon's friend, Mama Cass Elliot, who was at the center of the Manson murders and whose actions may be why the motive for the murders that America has come to accept as fact is actually false. The World Series-winning 1986 New York Mets were, in a word: assholes. But their fans loved them anyway. The Mets were brash, scandalous, addicted, violent, and when you got right down to it, a perfect reflection of their hometown of Queens, New York, and the perfect opposite of Manhattan and the hated New York Yankees who played there. The ‘86 Mets made headlines with their drug use, their on and off-field brawls, their nights in jail, their destruction, and, of course, their domination of the National League. They also made Mets fans and Queens residents focus on something other than the true crime case in the papers that summer, a case that threatened to sink Queens' reputation with a scandal involving corruption and the mysterious death of a beloved Queens politician outside Shea Stadium. Before we start the episode I need to set a disclaimer. This conversation walks through a man's journey with mental health including topics such as depression, anger, and suicide. This is why this episode is marked explicit. This conversation goes to some dark places, but with the intention of showcasing the rawness of the journey, and the realness of the redemption from it. There is no judgement if you must skip this episode. Please take care of yourself. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or a crisis, please reach out immediately to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255.Hey man, how you doing?A simple question, which usually is followed by a simple answer:I'm good man. This conversational dance is almost hardwired into society at this point. Now, like an extension of saying “hello”, the “how are you” question and the “I'm good” response have become just another step in the choreography of light conversation. There are obvious variations of how to respond to this:When it's a normal day. I'm GoodWhen we are struggling. I'm holding it togetherWhen we are in pain. Could be worseWhen we want to complain. Can't complain, wouldn't help anyway.Granted, the question itself is not designed for the long form answer, usually asked in passing, or on the go. It's largely just a courtesy at this point. But then, what if we aren't good? What if we aren't holding it together? What if it feels like it's gotten worse? And what if we need the time and space to complain, and be heard? Is anyone listening?Hi, my name is Ryan Guerra and this is a Father's Voice. And today I talk with Michael Lopez. Michael is someone I've had the pleasure of getting to know over the previous year. We had connected through a bible study at my church, and then also talked some about season 1 of this podcast and how it was helpful and encouraging for him. I knew some of his story, and I knew early on that I believed his story would bring value to father's lives everywhere, and I'm thankful he said yes to being interviewed. My vision for season 1 was about interviewing great fathers I knew and hearing how they became who they are. My vision for Season 2 is about interviewing father's who have come through hardship, and are still standing. This season is for the warriors, the heroes. This season is for the ones who took the challenge of fatherhood, and fought, and continue to fight, hard for their family.Michael has gone through it, and through the grace of God, still lives to tell his story today. My conversation with him today is a very dark one. We discuss in detail about his depression, his anger, and his plans for taking of his own life. But, every hero's journey has a redemption arc. And for Michael we discuss how at the brink of ending it all, God got ahold of his heart, reignited his passion for life, and started a long process of healing that birthed out the man who is a leader in my church and at his work, a compassionate individual, and a role model for men struggling with mental health issues everywhere.Michael is not shy about his struggles, and we go into vivid detail of them. I want to warn you that this conversation will get difficult to hear, but I'm proud and thankful that Michael shared his struggles with me, because along with hearing of his struggles, we get to experience his victories. Of which there are many.I am honored to have him on the show, and so I present to you, my conversation with Michael Lopez. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

She told her therapist that she had this desire to be a man - which the therapist was ready for. She also told the therapist that she wanted to explore why she might want to be a man - which question couldn't even fit into the therapist's realm of cognition. Instead of exploring the question Nancy posted, the therapist began to insist that it came from a place of hidden transphobia from her childhood. This caused her to spiral further into depression. Her journey out from her depression is miraculous and encouraging.   Nancy Charles is an ex member of the LGBTQ community who had a miraculous conversion to Christ through finding and praying the rosary at one of the darkest moments in her life. In this episode, we welcome Dr. Telesa Hart, Chiropractor and Burnout Coach, to help us to explore self-care strategies we can use to regulate our central nervous system. Your central nervous system includes your brain and your spinal cord. It plays a role in everything you do, and helps you to move, think, and feel. The central nervous system carries your body through its ‘rest and digest' functions as well as ‘fight or flight.'   When experiencing different forms of stress, your central nervous system may move out of its healthy functioning state to a dysregulated state, which may contribute to disease and other mental and physical challenges.  When considering many of the stressors Black women face, it's not uncommon to experience dysregulation in this way. This is why Dr. Hart encourages listeners to integrate a regular self-check into your daily wellness practice. She provides a brief overview of the functions of the central nervous system, and provides examples of symptoms and signs that may indicate that our system is overloaded.  She shares practical self-care activities we can use to regulate our central nervous system, and also provides insight on when we may need to contact a professional medical provider for support.   Dr. Hart describes  the link between burnout and central nervous system dysregulation, sharing her own powerful story of burnout and how she overcame a very difficult moment in her life that inspired her work today.   About Dr. Telesa Hart Dr. Telesa Hart is a passionate chiropractor and burnout coach, dedicated to promoting wellness and nervous system regulation. Born in Ft. Benning, GA, and raised in Germany, Dr. Hart brings a unique perspective to her practice, currently based in Atlanta, GA. Scott Weiland was sent to a psych ward when he was just 16 years old. Thirteen stints at rehab within the span of three years. In and out of two huge rock bands, Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver. On and off drugs. Addictions to heroin and cocaine that put him in harm's way, not least of which were three muggers in Paris who abducted and tried to kill him. Addictions that also caused him to hallucinate “demonic forces.” Forces that Scott Weiland fought off, physically and mentally, thanks in large part to his robust survival instinct – one that served him well but could only hold all that trouble and evil at bay for so long. But all is not lost, according to David. There is still a way forward, and it's simpler than one might think. “The essential moral act is the act of attention,” he says. “Our goal should be to cast a just and loving attention on others.” In this episode, he discusses his new book, “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen,” and how truly knowing others calls forth a better version of both oneself and one's community.
