This episode features an analysis of the mental heath portrayal depicted the 2019 film Joker.   What can we learn from this movie?   Contact the 2 Shrinks: Dr. Colleen Mullen https://twitter.com/DrColleenMullen Courtney Calkins - QuadFather https://twitter.com/QuadFatherMft Website http://shrink2shrink.com/ Twitter link: https://twitter.com/Shrink2Shrink  Resources cited during this episode:   Consequences of childhood abuse  adults with major depression who experienced abuse as children had poorer response outcomes to antidepressant treatment, especially if the maltreatment occurred when they were aged 7 or younger   Diminished executive functioning and cognitive skills. Disrupted brain development as a result of maltreatment can cause impairments to the brain’s executive functions: working memory, self-control, and cognitive flexibility (i.e., the ability to look at things and situations from different perspectives) (Kavanaugh, Dupont-Frechette, Jerskey, & Holler, 2016). Children who were maltreated also are at risk for other cognitive problems, including difficulties learning and paying attention (Bick & Nelson, 2016).   children who experience abuse or neglect are more likely to develop antisocial traits as they grow up, which can lead to criminal behavior in adulthood    Post Traumatic stress. Children who experienced abuse or neglect can develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized by symptoms such as persistent re-experiencing of the traumatic events related to the abuse; avoiding people, places, and events that are associated with their maltreatment; feeling fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame; startling easily; and exhibiting hypervigilance, irritability, or other changes in mood (Sege et al., 2017). PTSD in children can lead to depression, suicidal behavior, substance use, and oppositional or defiant behaviors well into adulthood, which can affect their ability to succeed in school, and create and nurture important relationships.    Physical consequences Childhood maltreatment has been linked to higher risk for a wide range of long-term and/or future health problems, including—but not limited to—the following (Widom, Czaja, Bentley, & Johnson, 2012; Monnat & Chandler, 2015; Afifi et al., 2016): ƒ Diabetes ƒ Lung disease ƒ Malnutrition ƒ Vision problems ƒ Functional limitations (i.e., being limited in activities) ƒ Heart attack ƒ Arthritis ƒ Back problems ƒ High blood pressure ƒ Brain damageƒ Migraine headaches ƒ Chronic bronchitis/emphysema/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ƒ Cancer ƒ Stroke ƒ Bowel disease ƒ Chronic fatigue syndrome AND certain regions of the brain may fail to form.

Have you wondered if people really do have multiple personalities?  Is it possible that they can change their biology as their personality splits off?  That's the big question in the M Knight Shyamalan suspenseful and creepy  movie, Split.  Listen in as therapists Dr Colleen Mullen and Courtney Calkins dissect this film through the use of selected scenes.  For this one, they also pulled in clips from real life examples of persons with multiple personality disorder, now referred to as Dissociative Identity Disorder. This movie gets you thinking about all of the possibilities of the mind, it's strength, it's ability to change how you are, it's ability to protect you from danger (at least when it splits you off into a different personality).  We can't wait to hear what you think!  Website http://shrink2shrink.com/ Twitter links: Shrink2Shrink https://twitter.com/Shrink2Shrink   Dr. Colleen Mullen https://twitter.com/DrColleenMullen Courtney Calkins - QuadFather https://twitter.com/QuadFatherMft     Articles referenced in this episode: Basic Facts https://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-Conditions/Dissociative-Disorders Myths https://psychcentral.com/lib/dispelling-myths-about-dissociative-identity-disorder/   YouTube Multiple Personality Disorder - Documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0LNyXsErb8&feature=youtu.be&t=4m52s

High-functioning autism refers to children who have average to above average cognitive abilities (intelligence). Asperger’s Disorder Children with Asperger’s Disorder have average to above average cognitive abilities, have difficulty reading nonverbal cues, talk too much about a narrow range of topics, sound like “little professors”, have difficulty making and maintaining friendships, and show unusual specialized interests (e.g. bus schedules, the Titanic). Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) Sometimes referred to Atypical Autism- Children with PDD-NOS have some characteristics of either autism or Asperger’s Disorder, but do not have enough symptoms to be meet the criteria for the either disorder. Some facts about autism The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls. An estimated 50,000 teens with autism become adults – and lose school-based autism services – each year. Around one third of people with autism remain nonverbal. Around one third of people with autism have an intellectual disability. Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias. https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/autism-spectrum-disorders-asd/index.shtml?utm_source=rss_readersutm_medium=rssutm_campaign=rss_full   Signs and Symptoms Parents or doctors may first identify ASD behaviors in infants and toddlers. School staff may recognize these behaviors in older children. Not all people with ASD will show all of these behaviors, but most will show several. There are two main types of behaviors: “restricted / repetitive behaviors” and “social communication / interaction behaviors.” Restrictive / repetitive behaviors may include: Repeating certain behaviors or having unusual behaviors Having overly focused interests, such as with moving objects or parts of objects Having a lasting, intense interest in certain topics, such as numbers, details, or facts. Social communication / interaction behaviors may include: Getting upset by a slight change in a routine or being placed in a new or overly stimulating setting Making little or inconsistent eye contact Having a tendency to look at and listen to other people less often Rarely sharing enjoyment of objects or activities by pointing or showing things to others Responding in an unusual way when others show anger, distress, or affection Failing to, or being slow to, respond to someone calling their name or other verbal attempts to gain attention Having difficulties with the back and forth of conversations Often talking at length about a favorite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond Repeating words or phrases that they hear, a behavior called echolalia Using words that seem odd, out of place, or have a special meaning known only to those familiar with that person’s way of communicating Having facial expressions, movements, and gestures that do not match what is being said Having an unusual tone of voice that may sound sing-song or flat and robot-like Having trouble understanding another person’s point of view or being unable to predict or understand other people’s actions. People with ASD may have other difficulties, such as being very sensitive to light, noise, clothing, or temperature. They may also experience sleep problems, digestion problems, and irritability. ASD is unique in that it is common for people with ASD to have many strengths and abilities in addition to challenges. Strengths and abilities may include: Having above-average intelligence – the CDC reports  46% of ASD children have above average intelligence Being able to learn things in detail and remember information for long periods of time Being strong visual and auditory learners Excelling in math, science, music, or art. Treatments and Therapies Early treatment for ASD and proper care can reduce individuals’ difficulties while helping them learn new skills and make the most of their strengths. The very wide range of issues facing those “on the spectrum” means that there is no single best treatment for ASD. Working closely with a doctor or health care professional is an important part of finding the right treatment program. There are many treatment options, social services, programs, and other resources that can help.   Here are some tips. Keep a detailed notebook. Record conversations and meetings with health care providers and teachers. This information helps when its time to make decisions. Record doctors' reports and evaluations in the notebook. This information may help an individual qualify for special programs. Contact the local health department, school, or autism advocacy groups to learn about their special programs. Talk with a pediatrician, school official, or physician to find a local autism expert who can help develop an intervention plan and find other local resources. Find an autism support group. Sharing information and experiences can help individuals with ASD and/or their caregivers learn about options, make decisions, and reduce stress. Medication A doctor may use medication to treat some difficulties that are common with ASD. With medication, a person with ASD may have fewer problems with: Irritability Aggression Repetitive behavior Hyperactivity Attention problems Anxiety and depression http://edspec.org/   As a parent of a child or young adult who displays evidence of one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders, you will want help in understanding these. Children with ASD have challenges in three main developmental areas: Delayed or deviant language development Disinterest in other people and/or poor social skills Rigid, repetitive, behaviors that are difficult to change Top 5 Facts about Autism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IOthQJwKzQ Top 10 Inspirational People With Autism and Asperger Syndrome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoqnPZXLGVA   https://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism

Shrink2Shrink podcast – Like Siskel & Ebert, with a psychological twist!     On this episode of @Shrink2Shrink we psychologically dismantle the 2015 movie Creed.  Here, our 2 shrinks Dr. Colleen Mullen https://twitter.com/DrColleenMullen and Courtney Calkins https://twitter.com/QuadFatherMft  discuss themes from the movie and explore what we can learn for our own lives using the themes of the film: family ties, what makes a family, and how Adonis Creed makes sense of being born to the incredible Apollo Creed – he never knew his father, but he has the same passion for boxing as his father.  We also explore how living with a legend in the family can be something that can open doors for us, but can also be something we want to keep hidden. Then, we get to reminisce about our love for the icon of Rocky Balboa as a cultural icon and the spark that the stories ignite in each one of us and why.  What is it about his achievements, his love of both boxing and Adrian (“Yo, Adrian!”) that inspire us?  Listen in as we examine love, relationships, loneliness, overcoming obstacles, resiliency and following your passions.   Next Shrink2Shrink podcast will examine the movie Zootopia   For more episodes and information: http://shrink2shrink.com/   Dr. Colleen Mullen’s other podcast, Coaching Through Chaos: http://coachingthroughchaos.com/   Courtney Calkins’ other podcast: http://quadfathermft.com/   All shows are available on a multitude of podcasting platforms.   CREED MOVIE 2015 - how to watch: https://www.amazon.com/s?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Creed&ref_=imdbref_tt_msg_ov&tag=imdbtag_tt_msg_ov-20   CREED Soundtrack: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Creed+Soundtrack&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ACreed+Soundtrack

Trainwreck and 2 Shrinks

In this episode of Shrink2Shrink, Courtney & Colleen explore the relational themes in the movie “Trainwreck!”. Amy Schumer appears lost in a sea of men, casually bopping from one to another, until a certain piece of man meat catches her in a way she hadn’t expected. We’ll discuss parents influence over what your kids believe, the process of watching your parents recognize their own mortality, sibling differences, what we say to impress a crush, the pressure to have kids, and so much more! Join us! Next up! TrainWreck! – She sure is! Or is she? She might just be a product of her upbringing and just struggling to get her life sorted and find love like the rest of us? In this movie, Amy Schumer plays a woman living a sexually carefree life until she meets a nice doctor with whom she seemingly has little in common with. When he begins to pursue her, she tries to run away and treat him like the piece of man meat that he is, but she feels compelled to go against her better judgment. In this movie, Courtney & I had plenty to talk about in regards to relationships, family dynamics, and single life. We got in some good giggles too! In this episode, we discuss: “Monogamy isn’t realistic!” – how what our parents teach us when we are young really guides us as adults. When Amy and her sister go through their father’s belongings, we discuss the family process of grief, and how, even though you were raised in the same house, you may have very different reactions than your siblings. “I’m memorabilia” – what it’s like to watch our parents recognize their own mortality “Do you like sports?”- Oh what we won’t say to try to get a date! “Do I have to worry about you with other guys?” – What’s it like when one person thinks your exclusive and the other doesn’t? uh, oh!! “I’m finally going to be a grandfather!” – Families don’t always agree on who constitutes a family member. It’s unfortunate that even though we have so many blended families these days, some extended family members may still not recognize the step-siblings as family members. Do we all just keep dating different people from the same mold? “Your life has not begun since you don’t have a baby”- Oh brother! Don’t get me started. There are so many ways people with children have found to make us childless women feel inadequate – Thanks ladies! “Just keep her away from the athletes” - What happens when you bring your new love interest around your family too soon and they make totally inappropriate jokes about you! Have you played the “Skeletons in the closet game”? – You can really learn about who has no boundaries in this one! I’ll drink to that! The death of Amy’s father – how we process grief is different for everybody, but it’s a process that takes time- Amy’s boss doesn’t seem to get that.

The movie “Inside Out” is the topic of discussion for Courtney & Dr. Mullen.  How accurately does this move capture the emotional interplay within our minds.  The discussion touches on what can happen to us if we are not aware of our feelings and if we don’t share our deeper feelings with the people in our lives.  How to improve our day to day life by being aware of and honoring our own emotional experience and process.   Dr. Colleen Mullen is from (among other things) her podcast Coaching Through Chaos http://coachingthroughchaos.com/ she can also be found on twitter at https://twitter.com/DrColleenMullen   “Inside Out” Official Movie Site http://movies.disney.com/inside-out “Inside Out” soundtrack can be purchased here http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_21?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=inside+out+soundtrack&sprefix=inside+out+soundtrack%2Caps%2C201
