When suicide is mentioned, the room often goes quiet. The heaviness of the topic shows how much fear and stigma surround it, but also how important it is to talk about. In this solo episode of This Complex Life, I explore the silence around suicide, why the subject feels so confronting, and the impact it has not only on families and communities but also on practitioners who sit with these stories. You'll hear about:• Why suicide is such a difficult conversation to have• The ripple effect on families, friends, partners, children and communities• The complicated grief that follows suicide and how it is carried• Myths and misconceptions that keep people from asking directly• The importance of clear, direct language when you are worried about someone• The impact of suicide work on practitioners and the need for support• Why connection and follow-up matter more than perfect wordsEpisode discussedhttps://marievakakis.com.au/when-a-client-dies-by-suicide-reflections-for-mental-health-professionals/If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for support. "I'm fine." How many times have you heard that response when you knew it wasn't true? We've all been there - sensing something's off with a mate, colleague, or family member, but hesitating to dig deeper. What if we're making things awkward? What if we don't know what to say? RUOK Day exists to break through exactly this hesitation and give you the perfect excuse to ask your mates how they're really doing. We sat down with Alistair Schuback, RUOK Day Ambassador and Safety Culture Specialist, who's witnessed firsthand how mental health plays out in workplaces and communities. His insights combine practical advice with personal experience, focusing on creating environments where people feel safe to speak up.RUOK Day happens once a year, but its message applies every day. Making mental health check-ins a regular habit, especially in high-stress industries like construction, could prevent tragedies and improve workplace culture. The question isn't whether you're qualified to ask, it's whether you care enough to try. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply show up and listen. So, are you OK? And more importantly, who will you ask today?LINKS:RUOK DayConnect with us on Instagram: @themindfulbuilderpodConnect with Hamish:Instagram: @sanctumhomesWebsite: www.yoursanctum.com.au/Connect with Matt: Instagram: @carlandconstructionsWebsite: www.carlandconstructions.com/
R U OK? Day Ming Johnston with Tod Johnston, 30 August 2025 When: Thursday 11 September 2025 Where: Nationwide What: R U OK?Day is Thursday 11 September 2024, our annual National Day of Action and a reminder that any day is the day to check in with your friends, family and colleagues. 2025 Message: R U OK? is calling on everyone to Ask R U OK? Any Day because regular, meaningful conversations can - and do - change lives New research has revealed a confidence gap when it comes to having meaningful R U OK? conversations. Three in four Australians believe it’s important to regularly ask someone if they’re OK, a third might hesitate – even when they sense someone might be struggling. This hesitation often stems from concerns they might say the wrong thing, invade someone’s privacy, or not know how to help. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When was the last time you stopped to check on your mates? Motorsport is full of driven and seemingly confident people, on both sides of the pit wall, but that doesn't make them immune to mental health struggles. TV presenter Barry Du Bois loves his bikes. He's currently restoring a cool ute too. And while we talk about that in this episode he has an important story to share, the speed humps he's had to tackle and how he came out the other side. Baz is now a power of positivity and a passionate advocate for R U OK? Rusty and the team at LiSTNR are proud to support the R U OK initiative and while this interview is confronting at times it's about starting a conversation around mental health. In this podcast episode, I'm addressing the significance of "R U OK? Day," which falls on September 14th. This day serves as a reminder to discuss mental health and suicide prevention. I talk briefly about the history of R U OK? Day and its transformation into a vital social movement dedicated to preventing suicides.Throughout the episode, I share some statistics related to suicide in Australia and the importance of sensitive language when discussing this topic. I debunk some common myths about suicide, such as the misconception that people who talk about it are merely seeking attention. I also stress that suicides often come with warning signs, and they can affect anyone, not just those with diagnosed mental illnesses. Here are four essential tips for engaging in conversations about suicide:Direct Communication: Approach someone you suspect may be struggling with suicidal thoughts with clear and direct questions. Ask if they're having thoughts of ending their life. Avoid vague or judgmental language.Provide Support: If the person admits to having suicidal thoughts, work together to keep them safe. Connect them with appropriate professional help, such as a GP or a suicide hotline.Follow Up: After initial contact with professional help, check in with the individual. Show that you care and want to support them through their journey.Normalise Conversations: Encourage open discussions about mental health and suicide prevention. Seek out resources and training programs to improve your communication skills in this crucial area.Remember that your support as a compassionate friend can make a significant difference. Suicide knows no boundaries, and the more comfortable we become with these conversations, the better equipped we are to help those in need. For additional resources and training programs, please refer to the links and information provided below.Resourceshttps://www.ruok.org.au/https://www.lifeline.org.au/https://www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au/ https://mhfa.com.au/connect with Marie https://thetherapyhub.com.au/ https://marievakakis.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/marievakakis/

As we launch into RUOK week, we revisit some of the interview rounds, where the guests speak candidly about their own self-care regimes. In this episode, Dr Elizabeth Blades, Dr Wendy LeBorgne, Dr Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher, Lisa Popeil, Jenevora Williams and Ashlie Amber share their personal stories, experiences, and philosophies on the importance of self-care from a physical, mental and emotional health perspective and how their regimes of self-care have made a positive impact to their lives. It is our hope, that these stories will help to inspire change and encourage others to embark on their own journey of self-care as well as to raise awareness for the RUOK organisation. In this episode01:08 - Introduction03:17 - Self Care with Dr Elizabeth Blades18:34 - Self Care with Dr Wendy LeBorgne31:27 - Self Care with Dr Gillyanne Kayes & Jeremy Fisher40:37 - Self Care with Lisa Popeil52:34 - Self Care with Dr Jenevora Williams1:04:19 - Self Care with Ashlie Amber For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/27Like this episode?
