This week I spiraled out with writer, illustrator, podcaster & professor Nicole J. Georges! (Calling Dr. Laura)  We talked shame and recovery from harmful family dynamics, making amends to yourself & others, the important of zines and yahoogroups for isolated young 90's queers, shoplifting, vegan betrayals, gossiping, gaslighting, writing memoir when you know your family won't be happy about it, and SO MUCH MORE. Plus, Nicole shared several incredible shame stories, including a true showstopper: a moment in which she may have accidentally shamed one of the best women of our time who we agreed deserves not a SINGLE iota of further shaming: MS. MONICA LEWINSKY HERSELF. Nicole has published several amazing and award-winning graphic novels, including Calling Dr. Laura and Fetch: How A Bad Dog Brought Me Home, and she has a new book out RIGHT NOW called Dog's Breakfast! It's an anthology of diary comics, which includes twelve issues of her zine Invincible Summer, and more than a decade's worth of rare and never before seen stories about love, loss, teaching, being a grouch, drawing graphic novels, dog death, and starting over.  You should ALSO check out Nicole's fantastic podcast Sagittarian Matters, and follow her on IG & Twitter @nicolejgeorges. As always, you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes. Nicole J. Georges is a graphic novelist and podcaster from Portland, Oregon. Nicole's podcast, Relative Fiction, adapted from her award-winning graphic memoir, Calling Dr. Laura. She is also the author of the book Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home, and the queer arts & vegan food review podcast, Sagittarian Matters. In this episode, Nicole and I cover topics ranging from punk righteousness, drawing comics, family secrets, podcasting, twelve step programs, chosen queer family, encopresis and making space for gentleness. Nicole makes the astute observation that “to be an adult, maybe, is to be less fragmented.” I urge you to check out all of Nicole's work. She is prolific and funny and powerfully insightful. Since recording this episode I listened to every episode of the Relative Fiction podcast and I must say, if you are interested in complicated families, queerness, attachment styles, intergenerational trauma transmission, this podcast has that and more, so definitely check it out. This is a podcast for people who identify as queer or for people who might think of their relationship between their body and confining social narratives as queer. This can feel like an isolating experience.  Our wounded bodies need spaces to talk about struggles with nourishment/disordered eating, body image issues, dysphoria, racism, heterosexism, transphobia, xenophobia, substance use/abuse, chronic pain/disability, body changes in parenthood, intergenerational trauma, the medical/wellness/therapy industrial complex and its lack of inclusion of queer bodies and much more.
