Happy Monday! Dojin Kim’s animated short film “Where the Rain Stops” was an Official Selection at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival on 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Originality – Short Film – Animation. This is unusual, but I think it is appropriate to share Dojin's post-podcast recording with everyone. He wanted to express himself more clearly after our struggles with live translation. Here are Dojin's own words: Thank you very much for your kindness and patience during the podcast recording. I know the language barrier must have made things less smooth at times, and I truly appreciate how thoughtful and generous you were throughout the conversation. In particular, when I did not fully understand the nuance of a short question and asked again, you kindly took the time to explain it in more detail, which made it much easier for me to understand. I am very grateful for that. It is always a wonderful thing to share something I have made with other people. Because of my full-time job and financial limitations, I was not able to visit Los Angeles in person, but having my film screened at SOFF was still a very meaningful experience for me. It was something truly special, and I would like to thank you again for making that opportunity possible.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                As with the themes in Where the Rain Stops, I feel that our world is living under dark clouds. From the climate crisis to the existential questions about humanity raised by AI, this is a dark and turbulent time.                  And yet, in the middle of that, the fact that human beings can communicate through creative work, and that people across the ocean, from different countries and different backgrounds, can share the emotions of the age with one another, reminds me of the value of art. More than that, it seems to offer us an answer, even if not a perfectly clear one, to the question of what it means to be human.                                                                      I want to express my respect for the work and dedication it takes to run a film festival and create a space where this kind of communication can happen.                                                                                                  Through today's podcast conversation, I was reminded once again of the value of art and communication. Thank you again for making that possible. Anne Aghion has been praised as a filmmaker of poetic vision and a unique documentarian whose films, in the words of one critic, “pull us deep into the social fabric” of the places she covers. She gained international renown for “The Gacaca Series” (pr. ga-CHA-cha), four films on post- genocide justice and social reconstruction in Rwanda. There, Anne Aghion charted the emotional impact of a controversial system of justice that returned killers to their homes to live side-by-side with the survivors of unimaginable violence. The final film in the series, “My Neighbor My Killer“, premiered in Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival; was nominated for Best Documentary at the Gotham Awards; and earned Aghion the Nestor Almendros Award for courage in filmmaking at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. Additionally, other films in the series received an Emmy Award and the UNESCO Fellini Prize. The 2008 feature “Ice People” was described by Variety as “staggeringly beautiful,” and New York Magazine's noted critic Bilge Ebiri wrote that “it might be the most immersive documentary I've ever seen.” The film, which explores the physical, emotional and spiritual adventure of living and conducting science in Antarctica, was produced with ARTE France and ITVS International in association with Sundance Channel. Her award-winning 1996 directorial debut “Se Le Movió El Piso: A Portrait of Managua (The Earth Moved Under Him),” examines how Nicaraguan slum dwellers had survived the double ravages of political and natural disasters. In 2024, Anne Aghion finished “Turbulence” which poses the question: How do we overcome the heartbreaks, sorrow and traumas we endure or witness, and come out whole? The film, written, directed and produced by Aghion, is made in association with Arte France – La Lucarne, and with the participation of the French Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, Procirep & Angoa, Jewish Story Partners, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Anne Aghion has collected numerous prestigious awards for her work, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship. She has earned a host of grants from such organizations as the United States Institute of Peace, the National Science Foundation, the French Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, and the Soros and Sundance Institute Documentary Funds. She has had residencies at the MacDowell Colony in the United States, the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center, and others. For “Turbulence” she also received a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship to India. She has served as a juror for La Scam's L'Oeil d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and the International Documentary Association (IDA), among others. She is an international speaker at universities and has conducted documentary workshops and master classes at film programs in countries including Haiti, India, Morocco, Lebanon, France and the United States. A have a great interview for you Lovely Listeners today! I first met Sam Gasch at FIlm Invasion Los Angeles in 2023, when his feature length screenplay “The Blanket” was an Official Selection.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Both Film Invasion L.A. and Sherman Oaks Film Festival have categories for unproduced screenplays and they get a LOT of submissions.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         In other words, when a screenplay is an Official Selection that means it is very, very good.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 This makes it all the more impressive that last year Sam returned, this time with the Official Selection screenplay “My Dog Loves Broccoli” at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2025. Smart, humorous and personable, Sam is one the people I end up chatting with the most at a festival event.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           I was delighted to see his name pop up on my calendar for a podcast recording. MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND THE WAY, MY WAY This week on the podcast I am delighted to be sharing a conversation I had with two very talented and Camino-spirit filled people, Bill Bennet and Jennifer Cluff. [See their bios below.] You may know Bill as the director and lead character of the film The Way, My Way, and the author of the book of the same name, which tell the story of his pilgrimage on the Camino Francés. You may know Jennifer as the actress who played Bill's wife in the movie, but what you may not know is that Jennifer is also Bill's real-life wife and they are solid partners in their creative endeavors. And what a delightful and insightful pair they are.  Let's see where this conversation goes . . .  In this episode I am trying a new format: a "live" audience asking questions of our guests. Let me know what you think!  HAVING TROUBLE BRINGING YOUR CAMINO HOME? Join us in La Terraza, where pilgrims gather to share in the spirit of the Camino. MEET BILL BENNETT Bill Bennett studied Journalism at the University of Queensland before joining the ABC as a journalist. He moved into documentaries and stayed with the ABC for twelve years before going freelance as a documentary filmmaker. During this time he won two Logies, (Australia's equivalent of the Emmy)for Television Reporter of the Year, and Most Outstanding Television Documentary of the Year. He then moved into feature films. He's made 17 feature films as writer, producer and director. He's won Australian Film Institute Awards (Australia's equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Film and Best Director and been nominated a further twelve times. He's had two films in Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival and four films selected for the Toronto Film Festival. In 2024 his movie The Way, My Way became the third highest grossing Australian film of the year. It was based on his best-selling Camino memoir of the same name. In 2025 the Spanish Government awarded Bill the 8th annual Malaspina Award for his outstanding contribution to furthering cultural ties between Australia and Spain through his book and film, The Way, My Way. As an author, Penguin Random House has published his YA supernatural thriller trilogy, Palace of Fires. MEET JENNIFER CLUFF Jennifer Cluff is a producer of feature films and a dramaturge who has taken her skills from theatre into literature and film. She began her career as an actress, at the tender age of 17, starring in the classic ABC TV series, SEVEN LITTLE AUSTRALIANS. Then followed more TV, some movies, and theatre – at the Sydney Theatre Company and the Queensland Theatre Company. During this time she worked with playwrights on the development of their material. She later script edited Bill Bennett's first feature screenplay for the film A STREET TO DIE, which was nominated for five AFI Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. As Bill's partner, she subsequently script edited all his screenplays, including the multiple AFI Award winner KISS OR KILL – a film which she also produced with Bill. Jennifer has since produced, along with Bill, 10 feature films, all of which were released theatrically.   #youonthecamino #caminodesantiago #firsttimepilgrim #thecaminoexperience #caminopodcast

fWotD Episode 3222: High and Low (1963 film) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 1 March 2026, is High and Low (1963 film).High and Low (Japanese: 天国と地獄, Hepburn: Tengoku to Jigoku; lit. 'Heaven and Hell') is a 1963 Japanese police procedural film directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was written by Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, Eijirō Hisaita, and Ryūzō Kikushima as a loose adaptation of the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Evan Hunter. Starring Toshirō Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyōko Kagawa and Tatsuya Mihashi, it tells the story of Japanese businessman Kingo Gondō (Mifune) struggling for control of the major shoe company at which he is a board member. He plans a leveraged buyout of the company with his life savings, when a kidnapper mistakenly abducts his chauffeur's son to ransom him for ¥30 million. The film is viewed as influential on police procedural cinema, and has been remade multiple times internationally. The film was produced by Toho, who bought the rights to Hunter's novel in 1961 for $5,000. Working on a production budget of ¥230 million, filming on High and Low began on 2 September 1962, taking place on location at Yokohama and on set at Toho Studios. Only one attempt could be made to film the ransom exchange. The shoot required multiple cameramen, leading to all other film productions being shut down for the day. Filming ended on 30 January 1963. Kurosawa worked with Masaru Satō to score the film in their eighth collaboration together; the film's soundtrack contains a variety of influences, including mambo, classical, and modern popular music. Post-production took just under a month and, after test screenings in mid-February 1963, the film received a wide distribution.High and Low was released in Japan on 1 March 1963 and became the highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office for that year. The film received generally positive reviews both domestically and abroad. In September 1963, the film was entered into the Official Selection for the Venice Film Festival. The limited American release of the film in late November coincided with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, an event that led to a depression in initial box office takings. High and Low was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globe Awards for 1964. Critical opinion of the film has remained high, with analyses of the film focusing on Kurosawa's humanism in tackling the issue of a growing class divide, the growth of an international consumer culture, and the film's use of structure to interrogate morality and social division. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:04 UTC on Sunday, 1 March 2026.For the full current version of the article, see High and Low (1963 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Brian.

A Marvelous Monday to all you Listeners! I do not have words for how much I respect a person such as John, who has accomplished much in his careers and yet never stops seeking to create new and original works.                                                                  Even the name of his production company, Infinovation Film, clearly states his personal desire to be infinitely innovative. Many do not know this, but I adore dance and dance films and even sit on the jury of a EDIFF, the Exeter Dance International Film Festival in the UK.                                                                                                    Between us, I am always envious of the beautiful dance films that EDIFF receives and John Schlag's “Panes Taking” is the rare Official Selection at SOFF or FI-LA that eases my jealousy of EDIFF. Happy Friday, Film Friends! I've got a history with Johnny Galvan III. It started when Johnny's screenplay “My Brother The Lion” was an Official Selection at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June, 2024. (More on that below.)                               In December, 2024, Johnny was an Official Selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival with the screenplay, “For Misty.” When 2025 rolled around, Johnny was once again at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June, but this time with the animated short film “Franks In Hell.”                                                                                             Thanks to its creativity and originality, “Franks In Hell” won Johnny the Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. To learn more about Johnny and his work, visit https://thewriting-company.com Before I complete this introduction, I have to honor Johnny's wife Misty and mention something from the first time that we met.                                                                                                                                          I was moderating the FI-LA 2024 Screenplay Awards Ceremony, which is a very cool event where each nominated screenwriter gets to stand in front of the audience and pitch their script.                                     As Johnny was talking about his screenplay, a story about his brother who he lost, he began to cry.                                                                                                                                                                                I was sitting in the front row and, well, I lost a best friend of 40 years in 2020 to Covid and know what it's like to lose someone that you expected to be with you until your golden years.                                            I stood up and offered Johnny a hug, and he accepted it, and we hugged.                                                                                                                                                                                                                        It was a moment that I will never forget. As North American men, we failed to bring up our weeping hug during the podcast, but after recording Johnny mentioned that Misty had mentioned it.                             So... the story will live forever in these show notes! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Podcast Links DIF Podcast Website - DIF Instagram - DIF BlueSky Discover Indie Film Foundation (nonprofit for the arts) Links DIF Foundation - Sherman Oaks Film Festival - Film Invasion Los Angeles
