This interview with my friend, Nita Whitaker was recorded over a year ago when her book, When Your Hand is in the Lion's Mouth, was released. She wrote this book about the life lessons she learned from watching her father and listening to his stories. Nita has been blessed to share stages with amazing people during her time as a singer and performer, but the one thing she remembers her dad telling her is that everyone is the same, people are just using their gifts in different ways. We also talk about our careers as nurses and how it has helped us as we are moving closer to what God has called us to be! There are so many good nuggets in this conversation! I pray that it will bless and guide you as you move closer in a relationship with God. Bio: Nita Whitaker is a former ICU registered nurse-turned Miss Louisiana, an accomplished singer, and award-winning actress and author. Whitaker's first independently published memoir, Finding My Voice: My Journey through Grief to Grace, won the Indie Discovery Book Award (Aging/Death and Dying) and two National Indie Excellence Book Awards in the Grief and Memoir Categories. Born in Shreveport, LA, she champions literacy through her 501c3 non-profit In A World With Books (www.inaworldwithbooks.org) which has put 18,500 new books in the hands of underserved children and counting. Whitaker has contributed articles for Inspired Women online magazine, was recently featured in Voyager LA magazine, and has also recorded and co-produced four independent records. Do you have the resilient grace and wisdom you need to endure struggles? Today's guest, acclaimed vocalist Nita Whitaker, shares the wisdom and character she gleaned from the life stories shared with her father.  Nita Whitaker is an accomplished vocalist, who learned her love for music in the spirit of the church before she went on to collaborate with legends like David Foster and Whitney Houston. The book is her literary exploration of her father's complex challenges he faced in his life with grace, the resilient soul in her family via keeping stories alive, and the paternal leader who guided her way.    She was inspired by her father to a resolute commitment to finding your own light and sharing it with those who are still learning. The sparks of wisdom imparted onto her, taught her about the different definitions of strength from her devoted father and the power of perseverance, patience and purpose. When Your Hand is in the Lion's Mouth: The Life and Wisdom of a Man Named Green is a narrative non-fiction story and a father-daughter memoir. Based on his remarkable 96 years of life, Whitaker's father has provided the lifeline of the story, as seen through the eyes and heart of his daughter. Whitaker captures the pride she has for the paternal presence who taught her about love and respect for yourself and others even in most trying times. Their bond grew from a family rich in experiences and strong sense of self with many lessons this story hopes to pass on to the next generation. Nita describes her father as a pillar for the community and his family. She chose to curate a collection of his most powerful doses of wisdom after enduring incredible hardships with grace. Whitaker titled her book, When Your Hand is in the Lion's Mouth, because of the struggles faced by her father during his life as a sharecropper in Louisiana during the Depression and Jim Crow eras of poverty and oppression.  Nita shares how her father inspired his community to bond in mutual support through faith-centered grace, diligence, and overcoming evil with light. Whitaker notes her grandfather modeled living as a child of Christ and brought her father up centered upon solid faith and grace. We discuss Nita's life song of communicating stories of light inspiring the world to live in peace, hope, and blessings. Whitaker weaves practical insights and her family's wisdom for living well into the stories she shares. She explains the universal appeal of outlining how to maintain healthy esteem and set successful habits. Nita shares a few tidbits of the life-shaping wisdom she learned from her father and his life. She alludes to his work ethic, always doing your best because it matters even when you don't think anyone will notice. Her father, now 96 years old, imparted truth on subjects from dating and self-worth to how to love your family and the greater community effectively. Nita recalls one of her favorite tips centered on resisting the temptation to hurry into what might seem like an easy opportunity.  We chat about integrity and legacy. Nita defines legacy as the love you leave. Whitaker details the importance of modeling the values we hope our children will learn. She encourages listeners to overcome darkness with light rather than giving into bitterness and negativity. Whitaker illustrates how we can choose to apply our situation to become better as people instead.  Nita encourages listeners to work on becoming the light God designed them to be for those who need hope and positivity around them. Episode 185 is with the amazing Nita Whitaker. Acclaimed singer Nita Whitaker (her resume includes singing the original demos for Whitney Houston) and her father, Green, share their true story in the new memoir, When Your Hand is in the Lion's Mouth: The Life and Wisdom of a Man . This is so timely - especially as dated history creeps back into our lives. Her father uniquely shaped her through his daily guidance in a place, situation and time that would be complex for many. Growing up in the Jim Crow south, her father could only hope that progress would be made, living a life leaning into his optimism as fuel for his future family. He gave her the tools to change how she saw, reacted and processed the world around her. We'd love to share some of their insights with you:· When facing hurdles, her father would tell your kids (and yourself) to be accountable, "giving it your all, whether it's 2 or 2,000" people watching.· Today family foundations, like the importance of kids having a true sense of self, can give strength in the midst of circumstance and are vital in uncertain times. · Civil rights are something that he saw change a country, change lives, change his life, change his daughter's life. 96 years is a long time to have a snapshot of our country!· Giving a truthful reality in a way that enlightens and shows room for potential over painHer and her father are available for an interview, should you be interested. We'd love to work together or find a project you have in the works she could contribute to. Thank you in advance for your time. Much appreciated!ABOUT NITA WHITAKERNita Whitaker is a former ICU registered nurse-turned Miss Louisiana, an accomplished singer, and award-winning actress and author.
