SHOW NOTES: The winter Olympics had a boring opening ceremony except for Andrea Bocelli. Some of the events seem duplicative, especially figure skating and skiing. Some seem like efforts to avoid death or injury, and not just competing—skeleton, luge, giant slalom, ski jumping, distance skiing. Skiing in ruts is rather boring, and then the women collapsing over the finishing line and gasping for air is frightening. The giant slalom hits about 85 MPH. Luge and skeleton runs are between 80 and 100 MPH. On the ice, men are tossing women around who have knives attached to their feet. The French judge in figure skating obviously downgraded the American and inflated the French scores so that the latter pairs won. That judge has been known to have done this throughout the last year. Now onto curling, which is a game played with stones and brooms, has suffered cheating accusations for the Canadians “double touching” the stone on launch. After a profane, long outburst by the accused, slow reply showed he, indeed, did commit the infraction. In a manner of speaking he “gave them the finger” before tongue lashing them with obscenities. So much for the Olympic spirit. (And for Canadians being nice people.) At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Canadian curlers Marc Kennedy and Rachel Homan were accused of "double-touching" (illegally touching a stone after its initial release) in separate matches. Sweden's Oskar Eriksson initiated the allegation against Kennedy on Feb. 13, while officials flagged Homan on Feb. 14. Curling is basically the same as shuffleboard, which older people play in retirement villages, or bocce which specifically older Italian people play on dirt. Then there's the cousin, English Lawn Bowls, which I've never been able to finish watching without falling asleep. Johnny Weir, the former Olympic figure skater and NBC commentator, is renowned for his highly, flamboyant, and gender-neutral fashion choices while broadcasting, often featuring makeup, jewelry, and avant-garde, designer clothing. He and Sarah Lapinsky are worth the time spent watching people jump around on ice. Yes, it is true that the Olympic Village at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games ran out of free condoms within the first three days, according to reports in La Stampa and The Guardian. Approximately 10,000 contraceptives for about 2,900 athletes were depleted quickly, prompting emergency restocking due to higher-than-expected demand. Now THAT'S the competitive spirit!

Os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno de Milão‑Cortina começam em 6 de fevereiro e prometem ser uma das edições mais grandiosas da história. Com novos esportes no programa e competições espalhadas pelo norte da Itália, o evento deve atrair 2 milhões de turistas para a região. Para o Brasil, a edição de 2026 marca um momento especial: pela primeira vez, o país chega aos Jogos de Inverno com atletas em condições reais de lutar por medalhas. Júlia Valente, correspondente da RFI em Milão Faltam menos de três semanas para o início dos Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno de Milão-Cortina. Pela terceira vez, a Itália recebe o evento, que terá duas sedes principais: Milão e Cortina d'Ampezzo, nas Dolomitas, a cadeia montanhosa dos Alpes italianos. As competições indoor serão realizadas em Milão, enquanto as demais provas acontecem em diferentes localidades do norte do país, como Cortina, Bormio e Livigno. A edição de 2026 contará com 16 modalidades esportivas e a participação de aproximadamente 3.500 atletas de 93 países. Neste ano, o programa olímpico traz uma novidade: a estreia do esqui de montanha, conhecido como skimo.  A expectativa é de uma grande audiência: cerca de 3 bilhões de pessoas devem acompanhar os Jogos em todo o mundo, enquanto mais de 2 milhões de turistas são esperados presencialmente ao longo das competições.  No Brasil, porém, boa parte do público ainda desconhece que os Jogos de Inverno começam em breve. Os turistas Paulo e Maria Isabel, que estão de férias em Milão, se disseram surpresos ao descobrir que a cidade será sede do evento. Para eles, falta divulgação no Brasil. “Eu, que gosto muito de esporte, não sabia que seria aqui em Milão e achei muito interessante. É um lugar muito bom para receber esse tipo de evento. Que pena que acho que não vamos conseguir assistir aos jogos”, afirmou Paulo.  Ainda há ingressos disponíveis. Os preços começam em € 30 (mais de R$ 180 na cotação atual), com opções mais acessíveis para modalidades como hóquei no gelo e curling. Já para assistir à cerimônia de abertura, marcada para 6 de fevereiro, o ingresso pode custar até € 2 mil (cerca de R$ 12 mil). O evento contará com apresentações de Laura Pausini, Mariah Carey e Andrea Bocelli. Para os que pretendem assistir presencialmente, o custo total pode ser alto. Segundo a Altroconsumo, entidade de defesa do consumidor na Itália, os preços de hospedagem chegam a quintuplicar no norte da Itália durante o período olímpico. A região da Valtellina, palco das provas de esqui acrobático e snowboard, registra os maiores aumentos, com um casal pagando em média € 1.659 (cerca de R$ 10 mil) por um fim de semana.  A expectativa é de um expressivo impacto econômico para a região. Estimativas indicam um retorno de € 5,3 bilhões (mais de R$ 32 bilhões), considerando turismo imediato e futuro, consumo, serviços e os benefícios de longo prazo associados aos investimentos em infraestrutura, segundo o banco Ifis. Somente em obras de infraestrutura, tanto esportivas como públicas, foram investidos € 3,5 bilhões (R$ 21 bilhões). Grande parte desse legado deve permanecer após os Jogos. Em Milão, a Vila Olímpica, construída para abrigar 1.700 atletas, será convertida em moradia estudantil. A arena de hóquei, com capacidade para 16 mil espectadores, será transformada em um ginásio multiuso destinado a eventos esportivos e culturais. Mas a poucos dias do início dos Jogos, nem tudo está pronto. Alguns teleféricos em pistas de esqui seguem em obras, pousadas continuam em reformas e a própria arena de hóquei ainda não foi totalmente concluída. A organização agora enfrenta uma corrida contra o tempo para entregar todas as estruturas até o dia da abertura. Brasil chega a Milão-Cortina com chances de medalhas O Brasil disputa em 2026 sua décima participação em Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno, mas nunca conquistou uma medalha. Neste ano, no entanto, a expectativa é de mudar este cenário. “A gente diz que a medalha nunca esteve tão quente. Vamos sonhar até o último segundo, porque a gente se preparou. Temos atletas que estão entregando resultados históricos", disse Emílio Strapasson, Chefe de Missão do Brasil nos Jogos de Milão-Cortina, em uma apresentação na Câmara dos Deputados. "Não é uma questão de sorte, é uma questão de que a gente consegue realmente ver uma linha de crescimento e vamos chegar na Itália com uma chance real de medalha. A gente não é mais um intruso, a gente é um participante respeitado”, ressaltou. Dois atletas se destacam como protagonistas na busca por resultados inéditos. O principal nome é o esquiador Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, uma das grandes promessas do país em Milão-Cortina. Na temporada 2025/2026, ele já subiu ao pódio três vezes, com uma vitória e dois segundos lugares. Em novembro do ano passado, ele entrou para a história ao se tornar o primeiro brasileiro a vencer uma etapa da Copa do Mundo de Esqui Alpino, em Levi, na Finlândia e neste domingo (18), conquistou a medalha de prata na prova de slalom na etapa de Wengen, Suíça. Filho de pai norueguês e mãe brasileira, Lucas competiu pela Noruega até 2023. Após divergências com a federação norueguesa e um ano afastado das pistas, decidiu retornar ao esporte vestindo as cores do Brasil. Outro nome com potencial de pódio é Nicole Silveira, destaque no skeleton, prova em que o atleta desce pistas de gelo em alta velocidade deitado sobre um trenó, chegando a até 140 km/h. No último dia 9, Nicole conquistou a medalha de bronze na etapa de Saint-Moritz da Copa do Mundo. “Essa medalha é muito importante pra mim, porque acho que mostra que todo o esforço que eu estou fazendo é o caminho certo e que está tudo valendo a pena”, afirmou. A atleta teve uma evolução significativa ao longo da temporada. Nas quatro primeiras etapas do circuito, ficou fora do Top 10, mas conseguiu saltar para o décimo lugar no ranking mundial após o bronze na Suíça. “A temporada não começou muito do jeito que eu queria. As atletas que eu estou competindo contra, muitas têm mais experiência que eu. Então, eu estou tentando achar o atalho pra chegar no topo. E é ano olímpico, então todo mundo está bem forte”, disse Nicole. Com resultados expressivos e visibilidade crescente, o Brasil chega a Milão-Cortina vivendo o momento mais promissor de sua história nos esportes de inverno.

Today, for our final "classic episode" of 2025, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with "All I Want for Christmas" co-writer Walter Afanasieff. Happy holidays and thanks for a great year of looking back together as we continue to look toward the future!ABOUT WALTER AFANASIEFFThirteen-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner Walter Afanasieff is best known for his collaborative songwriting and production partnership with Mariah Carey that yielded hit singles such as “Can't Let Go,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “Without You,” “Anytime You Need a Friend,” “Butterfly,” “My All,” and “One Sweet Day,” a duet with Boyz II Men that was named ASCAP Song of the Year. It hit #1 in December of 1995 and stayed there for sixteen weeks—a record that remained unbroken for more than two decades. Their “All I Want for Christmas is You” was released in 1994 and has since become a holiday standard.
