On this episode of The Next Best Thing, I'm celebrating two years of the podcast. I opened up about the journey behind building this podcast from scratch, facing doubts, fighting comparison, and redefining what success really means. From almost quitting to now reaching nearly 100 episodes, it's been about honoring promises to myself and helping others navigate life's transitions. Remember, perfection isn't the barometer of success. Show up, use what's in your hand, and let your own path unfold. Thanks for being part of this journey!

They reflect on the mental challenges of returning to the Finals after a title run, the weight of injuries, and the grit it takes to lead without scoring. The crew gives props to underappreciated legends like Dwight Howard and unpacks how selfless play and sharing the ball can change the game. They also break down the unique intensity of the NBA bubble and what made that championship feel like streetball with the highest stakes. Jessica Willis-Fisher is a singer-songwriter living in Nashville, Tennessee. Her childhood as the eldest of twelve siblings and member of a family band was marked by great tumult and abuse, despite spending several years in the public eye. Jessica would eventually free herself and deal with all that came next: coming to terms with her abuse, navigating the media, working to see her abuser imprisoned, and healing from the harm. Brooke talks with Nana, who shares his unique perspective on living with a disability. Nana discusses his childhood experiences, including the moment he learned about his tracheostomy and how it shaped his understanding of himself. The conversation delves into the challenges of navigating school systems that often lack proper support for disabled students, as well as the impact of societal perceptions on career choices. Nana emphasises the importance of resilience and self-advocacy, encouraging listeners to ask questions and challenge uncomfortable norms. KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability is viewed as a unique entity rather than a limitation. This perspective emphasises the importance of individual experiences and how one chooses to define their own identity. Growing up with a disability can lead to feelings of confusion and disconnect, especially when parents do not openly discuss the nature of the disability. Understanding one's condition can take time, often not fully realised until adolescence. The educational system often lacks adequate support for students with disabilities. There can be significant gaps in understanding and resources, leading to periods of exclusion from school and a lack of tailored support. Career paths can be influenced by one's disability, with many individuals gravitating towards roles that allow them to help others. Personal experiences can foster a desire to advocate for disabled individuals in the workforce. BEST MOMENTS "I think if I was to be in that era again, I would be very forthcoming and wanting to know why am I like this?" "I don't allow someone's negativity towards how I look or how I sound to determine how I walk through life." "I think now, because the buzzword of EDI is being flung around, we're being put in a position where, okay, we have to take this box." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Each week this podcast highlights an awesome disabled guest speaking about their own disability; why they are proud to be disabled and why they are proud to be themselves. The conversations in this show will look at what challenges these amazing people face socially, mentally, physically and life in general. This show is raw, open, honest, funny, welcoming and educational. Disabled & Proud does exactly what it says on the tin! And whilst we are creating this space for disabled people to be unashamedly themselves, without the need to conform to society, this is also not about toxic positivity. This show will be shining a big, bright light on disability without it being “Paralympic or pity”. As you will hear disability is WHOLE, COMPLETE & PERFECT and whilst the topic of disability can be quite heavy - and we definitely don't shy away from the bad days - this podcast is also about having fun too! Our aim is to play a part in reclaiming the word disability - turning it from inadequacy to perfection!INSTAGRAM! https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/?hl=en: https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/?hl=en

Do you have the confidence to speak up and say “no”? Rachel Stevens has learnt it's ok to stand up for yourself and have a voice. In this chat with Fearne – live from the Happy Place Festival – Rachel talks about how emotions are messy, and they're better spoken out loud imperfectly than not at all. They also chat about the early years of S Club 7; the band gave Rachel safety and structure when she needed to escape from a difficult family life. But over time it wore down her autonomy and independence; she explains how she found her voice so that you can too. Plus, are you a worrier? Fearne and Rachel both share what they're anxious about every single day. Rachel's book, Finding My Voice, is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this week's episode of The Best Guest we welcome actor and performance storyteller, Stacia Keogh. We talk about:Why storytelling is so importantThe three most important stories for business owners to shareIf you're new to speaking, how to find your voiceAbout Stacia KeoghStacia began working with businesses writing corporate training videos that were as entertaining as they were informative. She is an actor and performance storyteller appearing on world stages, public venues and small screens everywhere. As a resting actor in London Stacia learned the dark arts of advertising and how to use her story and acting skills to enliven pitches and presentations, notably J Walter Thompson, The Really Useful Group, Imagination and as an Education Officer at Kew Gardens. She currently works with professional service providers helping them to step into their own story to share their wisdom on panels, podcasts, and signature talks, 1:1 or Group Training programsShe hosts the podcast ‘Finding My Voice' where she interviews people who are speaking their truth and giving voice to others. If you play video games or listen to audiobooks chances are you've heard her voice guiding you through adventures.Key TakeawaysStorytelling is not just about reciting mission statements or listing features and benefits. Instead, it's about sharing genuine stories that have characters, specific events, and emotions attached to them. These stories help build trust and connection with customers and teams, allowing them to see themselves in the narrative and align with the company's values and purpose.Three Essential Stories for Business Owners: the origin story, the purpose story, and the value story. The origin story delves into how the company started and the founder's journey, providing a sense of connection and belonging for employees and customers. The purpose story articulates what the company stands for and its larger mission, uniting teams and attracting like-minded customers. Finally, the value story focuses on the transformation that the company brings to its customers' lives, going beyond product features to highlight the tangible benefits and outcomes.Tips for New Speakers: Rather than rushing through a speech or presentation, take a moment to breathe out, relax, and engage with the audience. By speaking to one person at a time, using facial expressions and hand gestures, and maintaining a steady pace, speakers can effectively convey their message and connect with their audience on a deeper level.QuoteWhen you tell your story, you give people permission to tell theirs.Connect with Stacia KeoghLinkedInInstagramTwitter/XWebsiteConnect with Victoria BennionTo learn more about working with us visit www.victoriabennion.com

I want to be a voice for the invisibles. (Leslie Nease)What do a Survivor contestant, deconstructing mama of four bigs, former Christian radio broadcaster, life and faith transitions coach, author and newly-minted podcast hostess have in common? They are all named Leslie Nease, our podcast guest this week.Leslie is quick-witted, well-spoken and passionate about coming alongside of people in their ever-evolving spiritual journeys and making sure they feel seen, heard and absolutely not alone. She wants to make the "invisibles" (those of us who are afraid of speaking out about our deconstructing journey for whatever reason) find our voice again, the way she has found her own.On this episode, we explore all the ways we have been shut down, silenced, or spiritually bypassed and discover why it's so important that we discover who we are and why our stories matter (and why it's good that we begin to tell them).Leslie also gives us some really good tips about what's at the root of having a long-term, healthy relationship with your kids, especially one that has ridden all the religious and spiritual rollercoasters that come along with deconstructing toxic faith systems. This one is a goodie, if we say so ourselves. You can find Leslie at the following:Instagram: @leslieneaseWebsite: www.leslieneasecoaching.comPodcast: Honoring the Journey

Finding My Voice as the Heaviness of Social Media Silences Me by Radio Islam
How do you humanise people facing unimaginable odds? That was the task Plestia Alaqad gave herself when she first put on her press vest on October 7. Lessons Learned and Finding My Voice Again resonated much more than doing a typical year-in-review post (at least how I've done them in the past). And for what it's worth, that's kind of the theme for this next year: both with business and my life.In other words, doing things differently.Initially, I was excited to do a year-in-review podcast. I've always enjoyed doing my look back on the year and seeing what worked, what didn't, and how that would impact the coming year.So much happened in 2023 that much of it feels a bit like a blur.In so many ways, the year really felt like “a lot.”The contrast I experienced in moving back to California from Costa Rica felt overwhelming at times. The first contrast might seem obvious, and that was the weather.Having grown up and spent the majority of my adult life in the Bay Area, I didn't think it would have such an impact on me, but it did. It didn't help that I moved back during a crazy, heavy winter with massive snow (I've been at my Dad's since moving back, and it's about an hour southeast of Lake Tahoe).Beyond my short stint and one winter in Boise, Idaho, I've never lived in the snow.I have zero intention of doing that again when I leave here.I also forgot how incredibly dry it is here. Costa Rica is humid, but it's not like Orlando. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I acclimated to that climate after a while. Not to mention, my skin felt fantastic. As much as I missed the seasons (to the extent that Northern California actually has seasons), winter is the season I like the least.Snow is pretty, and I love how quiet it makes everything, but I'd be fine if my only experience of snow moving forward were a weekend visit. The Biggest Adjustment of AllPeople. My Dad will be 80 this year, and his health isn't all that great. You wouldn't look at him and think so, but he has a handful of issues (his heart is the main issue) that are somewhat serious. His health and missing family are the primary reason I moved back. The secondary reason was that the last year there was more trying than I realized. I had visitors every month for nine months, with only one month break during that time.As much as I was super appreciative that people came to visit, it interrupted my life and work in a way that impacted my income and my energy (again, hadn't really realized this while I was experiencing it). All my guests were people who were close to me, so it wasn't like they were difficult. This just validated what I already knew about myself, and am going to be firm about in the future. I require a good chunk of time to myself. Boundaries are key for me – regardless of whether they make sense to other people or not.It took a few “come to Jesus” moments with my Dad also for him to “get” that just because I'm at home working doesn't mean I'm available for midday chats, errands, questions, or whatever else he thinks of. That being said, it's a good thing I did come back.We had three trips to the ER this year (all via an ambulance) because of his health. My siblings are both two hours away so my Dad would have been on his own until...

As an entrepreneur, we discuss some of the struggles along the way of building a brand and how she got to the success that S'ABLE is today. This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. While in their youth, Jessica Willis Fisher and her eleven siblings were thrust into the spotlight for being the perfect musical family. Having achieved nation-wide fame on America's Got Talent, the Willis Fishers scored their own reality show in 2015, letting cameras into their pristine and heavily Christian home to document the daily lives of a happy, smiley family trying to make it in the famously non-toxic (just kidding) entertainment biz. So when allegations of child abuse and molestation broke out against the family's patriarch, Toby Willis, Americans and onlookers across the globe were in disbelief. How could this family, which had been put on a pedestal and idolized extensively as “picture perfect,” possess such insanely disturbing secrets? Because the world is fucked up, hellooo! But our listeners already knew that. On today's episode, Jessica joins us to discuss her story, as well as parallels she sees between her family and others that shared the reality show spotlight. She's begun releasing new music again as a form of healing—you can check out her album Brand New Day here. You can also read her memoir, Unspeakable: Surviving My Childhood and Finding My Voice, here. Please note, this series includes details of sexual abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
