This week on From Mrs. to Ms., we're joined by the remarkable Dr. Nadine Macaluso, aka Dr. Nae—a licensed marriage and family therapist, trauma expert, and author of Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide to Recognizing, Escaping, and Healing from Trauma Bonds. As a 22-year-old, Nadine was swept up in a fairy tale romance with Jordan Belfort, the infamous "Wolf of Wall Street," played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the hit movie. Their eight-year marriage started with extravagant gifts, romantic dinners, and lavish parties, but soon turned into a nightmare filled with infidelity, narcissistic abuse, and uncontrollable addiction. Nadine, like so many others in toxic relationships, remained trauma-bonded—believing her love could save him—until the pain became unbearable. At 30, Nadine made the courageous decision to leave Jordan, pack up her children, and start over in Los Angeles. Through intensive therapy and deep self-reflection, she not only healed but discovered her passion for helping others break free from similar cycles of abuse. By 39, she returned to school and later earned her PhD in Counseling and Somatic Psychology, becoming an industry expert in narcissistic abuse, trauma bonds, and complex PTSD. In this powerful conversation, Dr. Nae shares her personal journey from a trauma-bonded marriage to finding healing, purpose, and ultimately, love again. She breaks down what trauma bonds are, why they're so hard to escape, and the steps you can take to reclaim your authentic self. Whether you're navigating a difficult relationship or simply curious about the psychology of toxic dynamics, this episode is filled with valuable insights and hope. Don't miss this heartfelt discussion with a woman who turned her pain into power and is now helping countless others do the same. Episode Summary:
In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Nadine Macaluso, renowned therapist and trauma expert, shares her journey of overcoming a toxic relationship with "The Wolf of Wall Street" and explains the dynamics of trauma bonds. Together, we explore how these relationships form, why they're so difficult to leave, and actionable steps for breaking free and rebuilding your life. Dr. Nae offers profound insights, practical strategies, and hope for anyone trapped in a trauma bond.

    Key Topics Covered:
  1. Dr. Nadine's Personal Journey  Married to the infamous “Wolf of Wall Street,” Jordan Belfort, and the realities behind the glamour depicted in the movie.  Her experience with love bombing, coercion, abuse, and the eventual breaking point that led her to leave.  How her journey inspired her to become a therapist specializing in trauma and toxic relationships.    2. What Is a Trauma Bond?  A toxic, dysfunctional relationship characterized by power imbalance and cycles of intermittent reinforcement (e.g., love bombing followed by abuse).  Key conditions: One partner seeks control while the other becomes emotionally attached despite the harm.  The confusing mix of highs and lows that keeps people trapped in these relationships.    3. Recognizing a Trauma Bond  Signs of a trauma bond: self-sacrifice, self-abandonment, and rationalizing abusive behavior.  The importance of radical acceptance and recognizing the reality of the relationship.  Dispelling the myth that the victim is at fault for the abuse.    4. Breaking Free from a Trauma Bond  The importance of having a plan before leaving: gather financial, legal, and personal resources.  Learning to “wear the mask” and act normal while preparing your exit.  Why reaching out for support and building resilience in a safe community is critical.    5. Rebuilding Your Life After Leaving  Turning the focus inward: rediscovering who you are, addressing developmental trauma, and strengthening your self-worth.  The role of self-care, therapy, and community in stabilizing after a trauma bond.  Embracing the healing journey as an opportunity to create a life you love.    6. Dr. Nae's Advice for Healing  Abuse is never the victim's fault, and healing is possible for everyone.  The importance of recognizing the impulse to heal and following it step by step.  Building new neural pathways to replace patterns of shame and self-blame with empowerment.
Key Takeaways:  Trauma bonds are rooted in control and manipulation, not love. Recognizing the reality of the relationship is the first step to breaking free.  Healing requires a plan, support, and the willingness to prioritize your self-care and growth.  The power to rebuild your life lies within you, and a brighter, healthier future is possible.

Was I In A Cult? is not your typical cult podcast. Hosted by writer/comedian Liz Lacuzzi and documentary filmmaker Tyler Measom, the duo bring you first-hand stories from real cult survivors— each episode infuses humor, heart, and hope into tales that can otherwise be dark.  And the guests have not only survived, but transformed their darkest moments into stories of strength. As cult survivors themselves, Liz and Tyler aim to humanize the cult experience. Give it a listen… it may just leave you asking yourself “Wait… was I in a cult?!” -- Dr. Nadine Macaluso joins us today to discuss our first of its kind on this show… a cult of one. Who exactly was her cult leader? None other than “The Wolf of Wall Street,” her ex-husband, Jordan Belfort. In the movie adaptation of Jordan's book, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Dr. Nadine was portrayed by Margot Robbie and had no say in how her life was portrayed. Well, today Dr. Nadine is here to share the truth behind her picture perfect life. On the outside she had beauty, wealth, the doting husband, and two wonderful kids. But today she shares the truth about what was going on behind closed doors: the isolation, the loss of self, the abuse, the control, the manipulation and the gaslighting that kept her in a haze of confusion and pain. But, like every guest on this show, she shares the moment she finally found the strength and courage to walk away for good.  Now a respected therapist, Dr. Nae emphasizes the importance of therapy in her healing process and destigmatizing the experiences of victims of cult leaders or pathological lovers. A Brooklyn gal at heart, Dr. Nae is as real as they get and was an absolute joy to have on the show.  *** Listen to Was I In A Cult?: https://www.wasiinacult.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Trauma bonding can keep us locked in an abusive relationship. It's a neurological response to the abuse that creates significant vulnerability. It happens to our children too—they may become bonded to their abuser (your abuser). About Dr. Nadine: Dr. Nadine Macaluso, known to her patients as Dr. Nae, is the real-life inspiration behind Naomi Belfort's character in "The Wolf of Wall Street." She survived a turbulent eight-year marriage to Jordan Belfort, marked by abuse, greed, and trauma. Following her experiences, Dr. Macaluso relocated to California. Her journey of trauma and healing inspired her to return to school at age 39, where she earned her Master's in counseling and a Ph.D. in somatic psychotherapy. She further specialized with a two-year postdoctoral training in the Neuro-affective Relational Model (NARM). As a therapist, Dr. Macaluso combines her education and personal experiences to help others heal from trauma. Her practice focuses on assisting patients in connecting with their authentic selves, fostering confidence, resilience, and agency. Dr. Macaluso firmly believes in the potential for post-traumatic growth, instilling hope in her patients and guiding them to reach their potential in life and love. ---

“I was in a quintessential trauma bond with my ex-husband, the ‘Wolf of Wall Street,' Jordan Belfort,” says Dr. Nadine Macaluso. “It started, as most trauma bonds do, with love bombing and promises of love and adoration forever, along with extreme affection. It was very intense and fast-paced, and then it blew up like many trauma bonds do.”    Dr. Nadine, also known as Dr. Nae, is an author and licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in trauma bonds, narcissistic abuse, complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), and somatic therapy. In this episode, Dr. Nae joins Dr. Z to share her own personal story of narcissistic abuse survival, including the psychological, emotional, financial, and legal challenges she faced within her own relationship with Jordan Belfort. She discusses her healing journey, and how her experiences navigating her own trauma bonding put her on the path to help those in similar circumstances. Dr. Nae emphasizes that the abusive behavior of a partner is never the victim's fault, and that there is always hope and a path to healing.   In addition to her extensive clinical work, Dr. Nae is the author of “Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide to Recognizing, Healing, and Escaping from Trauma Bonds.” Her work offers insights into identifying the signs of narcissistic abuse and how to break free from trauma bonds.    This episode is a powerful message of hope and resilience, encouraging listeners to recognize their own worth and seek the support they need to reclaim their sense of self.    Quotes “When he first wrote the book, which later became a movie, I just remember thinking inside, ‘I survived this incredible Greek tragedy,' because that's what it always felt like—the depth of the pain I had endured. And now it's entertainment. Inside, I just said to myself, ‘You know, Nadine,'—I fought and wrestled with myself—but then I said, ‘This is bigger than you, and you have to surrender to this.'” (18:43 | Dr. Nadine Macaluso)  “We can't build resiliency in isolation. The only way we can build authentic confidence is to approach what we fear. And so, with the help of people, never by myself, I just kept approaching life.” (27:20 | Dr. Nadine Macaluso)  “It really wasn't spoken about, and it's so great that it is now because it is a very isolating experience with so much shame and embarrassment. There's just so much to climb through to get out of it. Then you have children and financial dependency, and the court system, right? It works against all of us in breaking free and getting healthier. Yet, here we are today having this conversation. My book was a labor of love; it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I don't think I'll ever do that again. It was a very humbling experience.” (40:03 | Dr. Nadine Macaluso)  “Trauma lives in the body. It's an experience that overwhelms us, and our nervous system, unfortunately, integrates it… After a trauma bond, you feel so unsafe in the world. How do I get people to feel safe in their bodies? With breath work, grounding exercises, and really listening to their bodies. This helps them contain their feelings because there's so much emotional dysregulation that happens. As we know, our thoughts and minds aren't always our best friends. I always say the true self lives between your throat and your pelvic floor.” (42:08 | Dr. Nadine Macaluso)    Links Connect with Nadine Macaluso: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrnadine/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drnaelmft Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide to Recognizing, Healing, and Escaping from Trauma Bonds: https://amzn.to/3KRssRF Website: https://drnae.com/   Connect with Dr. Jaime Zuckerman: https://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/ https://www.zgrouptherapy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dr.z_psychologist/ https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.z_psychologist Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

She received her master's degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in somatic psychotherapy, Dr. Nae established a thriving private practice. Her office quickly became a sanctuary for women who shared hauntingly familiar tales of entanglement with pathological lovers (PLs), trapped in the clutches of trauma bonds. She recently wrote a book, "Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide to Recognizing, Escaping, and Healing from .Trauma Bonds," In this seminal guide, she shares her personal narrative and the knowledge acquired over the years. Readers are granted insights into the psyche of the narcissistic pathological lover, a nuanced understanding of the traits that render certain women susceptible to their advances, and practical strategies for breaking free from the shackles of trauma bonds. While he was a young man Jürgen Moltmann was conscripted into the Germany Air Force. After an Allied bombing of his city Moltmann then spent 3 years in a Scottish prison. While there he encountered the Gospel. But his own dramatic experience became foundational seedbed for his own theological career. What did that mean for his theology? What did that mean for his teachings about God's Spirit? In this episode I explore all of that, celebrate what I appreciate about Moltmann's scholarship, and describe what and why I reject some of his theological formulation. Along the way I also re-vist how American Church leaders were manipulated by the Federal Government when Covid 19 was hitting the planet. What did those Church leaders do that is grotesque? Why did they do what they did? What can we learn about the power of narratives? What does this all reveal about the power of power among the powerful?! Come laugh and think with me!
