In this episode we are learning about the formation of the American Board of Genetic Counseling (aka ABGC) with Ann Walker and Ed Kloza. Ann Platt Walker, MA, LCGC has held many leadership positions including the Founding President and Director of the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), President of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) in 1982, and has been on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG), American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), and the American Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). During Ann's career she held roles at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center including as the program director for the Master's of Science in Genetic Counseling Program for over two decades. She has authored over 20 peer reviewed publications, 10 book chapters, and countless abstracts and presentations. Ann has been awarded many times through her impressive career including the Natalie Weissberger Paul National Achievement and Leadership Awards from NSGC.Ed Kloza, MS, LCGC was the first genetic counselor in Maine. He helped establish clinical genetics in Southern Maine and pioneered prenatal serum screening at the Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough, and was a member of the team from Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island which published the first international clinical validation study of cell-free DNA screening. He was key in the development of the genetic counseling profession including as a past president of NSGC (the first, and one of only two males elected to that position), and in helping create the American Board of Genetic Counseling (which we are focusing on today). In 2000, Ed was honored with the Natalie Weissberger Paul National Achievement Award. Currently Ed is the genetics education consultant for the New England Regional Genetics Network (NERGN) and is an adjunct Professor at Bay Path University with their graduate Genetic Counseling program. On This Episode We Discuss:The ABGC versus the NSGC and which came first! The early days of board examsWhat prompted the creation of the ABGC in 1992Challenges in forming ABGCThe original goals of ABGC as an organizationThe first ABGC president and other key playersWhen ABGC began to accredit genetic counseling programsEstablishing practice-based competenciesIf you want to learn more about the history of the GC field, check out Episode 136 with Linda Robinson . We meet our next guest, Leigh Ann Walker at the little Marriott hotel downtown Charlotte. We settle into a booth in the restaurant and crack open the jar. It's a great conversation with Leigh Ann. The Jar gives her some great questions and we cover a lot of ground. Leigh Ann was an only child and probably a bit of a surprise as her mom was in her 40s when she had her. Her father passed away when she was just three, so she has no memories of him, and covers that relationship in her book. Her personal story in the journey of her mom, hospice, and at home, and the process of helping her pass. We talk about love for her children, yoga, and Marlene Dietrich, the movie star. It's a great conversation, and Leigh Ann is clearly in a great place. She's comfortable with who she is, her children, her life, and it comes through. Listen in to hear the calm, intelligent, reflection as she looks back on life through the jar. This week, we kick off the episode by thanking everyone for coming out to Nina Boodhansingh's artist reception at the Gallery at Steel Pixel Studios. After that, Ben and Elisabeth talk with Marie Jeanna Haba about her artwork. Marie Jeanne is an independent artist working and living in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Her interest in art and stained glass began in 2010 when she first arrived to the U.S. from Guinea Conakry in West Africa. While attending Germantown High School, she distinguished herself by crafting paper birds with intricate feathers and stained glass. One of her feather birds won first place in the Philadelphia School District art competition, kicking off her career as a visual artist.Upon graduating, she attended Community College of Philadelphia where she continued studying English as a second language. Jeanne then transferred to Shippensburg University where she majored in French language and culture while engaging with many art courses, including art history, 3-dimensional art, and ceramics. After graduating from Shippensburg University, Jeanne felt torn between pursuing a career as a translator and exploring her passion for stained glass and painting. She made a studio in her basement, a sanctuary where she was able express her creativity, and dedicated herself to making art from an international perspective.Jeanne's artworks are inspired by her early experiences in Guinea Conakry, as well as by the West African perspective on life. She draws from the region's spirituality and the concept of sacred femininity. “Heaven is under the feet of women,” according to Islamic belief—a popular saying across West Africa. With this in mind, Jeanne's art depicts the female figure. Her work explores the mythology, spirituality, and representation of women in her culture. With her fine art, Jeanne manages to combine her experiences as a young adult in Pennsylvania with her early influences in Guinea Conakry. Although women are considered sacred in West Africa, there is still a taboo around open conversation about a woman's body. Therefore, Jeanne's dream is to introduce a frank dialogue about all aspects of femininity—including the bodily form. You can view her work at her website, https://www.marie-belle-art.com/, on Instagram at @belleeeart, or by visiting her on an upcoming First Friday at the Banana Factory. Our opportunity for the week is the "Art (and) History From a Queer Perspective" at the Bradbury Sullivan Center. The next class will focus on Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack) and her era, with a special presentation by “Lister Sister” Michelle Mecham, on decoding Anne's fascinating diaries. While it's sometimes hard to provide solid evidence that a person in the 1800s was actually gay, that is not the case with this fascinating woman. Diarist Anne Lister has been called the “First Lesbian”, because her (literally) 5 million words of eye opening journal entries (circa 1835) describe not only her well-adjusted understanding of her lesbian identity, but graphic descriptions written in code of making love to many women, including Ann Walker, whom she wooed and “wedded." Lister's and Walker's in-church commitment has been recognized as the first same-sex marriage in Britain, and Anne Lister's life is the subject of the show “Gentleman Jack," a BBC TV series. In this class, instructor Liz Bradbury, MFA will talk about Anne Lister's life and a bit about other queer figures in history that were part of her era. Included in this class will be a presentation by Michelle Mecham, a “Lister Sister” who is part of the decoding project of Anne's Diaries, organized by the Shibden Hall Anne Lister Museum. The series is free and open to the public. Registration not required. For more information about the series, contact instructor Liz Bradbury at 610-432-5449 or Liz@BradburySullivanCenter.org.

Frances reads two letters, written by Matilda Machell, her third great-grandma. These letters are part of a huge archive of documents, written by Frances' family, now safely preserved in the Bodleian Library. The first letter was written from Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, on the East coast. The letter states Friday Aug 28th at the top, but was likely to have been written on Friday Aug 26th 1825, when Matilda was aged 25.The second letter is written from Springwood on Monday January 23rd 1826. Matilda visited Crow Nest, near Halifax, home to the three wealthy Walker siblings, and she wrote about them. Both letters were sent to Matilda's favourite brother, Christopher, back home in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire.Frances has thoroughly enjoyed researching this podcast and delving into the world of Ann Walker and Anne Lister. She hopes you enjoy listening to it.Do email Frances if you can shed any further light on any of the content of the letters - machellcoxletters@gmail.com - Frances also posts on Twitter - @CoxLettersAll content is subject to copyright, and belongs to Frances Thompson and the Bodleian Library.Intro - 00:00Bridlington letter - 05:20Notes on Bridlington letter - 11:28Springwood letter - 16:09Notes on Springwood letter - 25:11"Poor Lord Paget" - 40:33Springwood - 46:43
Sally Wainwright's new drama Gentleman Jack tells the story of Anne Lister, the Victorian landowner and industrialist whose coded diaries have revealed a hidden world of lesbian relationships and class and gender struggles in 19th Century Yorkshire. Starring Suranne Jones, the series covers just two years of Anne's eventful life, including the beginning of her relationship with future wife Ann Walker. Jenni is joined by Sally and Anne Choma, author of Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister. As part of a series about mental health we have been asking women how it feels to live with a mental illness. Heather is now 35 and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 29. In 2013, she was snapped by a street photographer at the height of her psychosis. Heather has tracked the photo down and shows it to our reporter Jo Morris. Although the photo is hard for her to look at it also reminds her how far she has come. Adelaide Bon was raped by a stranger when she was nine years old. She told her parents who registered the crime with the police. She talks to Jenni about the impact that day had on her life and how decades later she came face to face with her rapist in a Paris courtroom, experiences she describes in her book ‘The Little Girl on the Ice Floe'.
