Send us a textMusic has a remarkable ability to transport us through time, evoke powerful emotions, and even heal our psychological wounds. This fascinating connection between melodies and mental wellbeing takes center stage as we explore how the songs that soundtrack our lives can profoundly impact our emotional health. The power of musical association reveals itself through Casey Clark's touching story. After losing her grandfather, she found solace in Michael Bublé's album—the last gift she gave him before his passing. Now, when grief or PTSD symptoms overwhelm her, those familiar melodies provide grounding when traditional coping techniques fall short. This personal connection exemplifies how music becomes intertwined with our most significant memories and relationships.Science strongly supports what many of us intuitively understand about music's therapeutic qualities. Research demonstrates that regular listening to classical music significantly reduces anxiety levels, while other studies show music helps people recover faster from stressful experiences. The physiological benefits are measurable—lower stress hormones, reduced blood pressure, and decreased heart rate. Music offers both an emotional escape and a way to process complex feelings, particularly when we're stuck in negative thought patterns. Our musical preferences typically form during adolescence and young adulthood, creating lifelong connections that become emotional resources during difficult times. Whether through the nostalgic mixtapes of yesterday or today's carefully curated streaming playlists, these sonic companions help us navigate life's challenges. Instrumental music—from classical compositions to electronic dance music—allows listeners to project their feelings into the soundscape, creating a personalized emotional outlet without the potential distraction of lyrics.Beyond passive listening, actively engaging with music through playing instruments provides additional benefits, fostering discipline, creativity, and emotional expression. These multifaceted musical experiences build resilience and offer healing during times of stress, grief, or anxiety.Ready to explore how music might enhance your own mental wellbeing? In this episode of Concepts & Conversations, Coach Bryan opens up about one of the most significant days of his life—June 25, 2016. Not only was it his 33rd birthday, but it was also his wedding day. What should have been a picture-perfect celebration quickly turned into what he now calls The Unexpected Moment—a powerful reminder that even on our biggest days, life rarely goes exactly as planned. From the early-morning excitement of getting his haircut by his brother-in-law, to the laughter and encouragement of his groomsmen, to standing at the altar as Michael Bublé's “You and I” played, Bryan recounts the emotions of the day in vivid detail. But when it came time to exchange vows, the words he expected—and longed to hear—never came. That moment shifted the energy of the day and left him wrestling with disappointment beneath the surface of smiles and celebration.Through honest reflection, Coach Bryan unpacks the deeper lessons hidden inside that unexpected moment: the difference between expectation and reality, why love is built on commitment rather than performance, and how discomfort often becomes the soil where growth begins.Whether you're married, preparing for marriage, or simply reflecting on love, this episode will resonate deeply. It's a raw, unfiltered reminder that while weddings last a day, marriage is a lifelong journey—and the moments that catch us off guard often shape us the most.

On the Saturday August 23 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet New York Times bestselling author Joy Fielding. With a career spanning over four decades, she has eraned readers with her ability to weave intricate plots, complex characters, and emotional depth. Known for bestsellers like “See Jane Run,” “Don't Cry Now,” and “Someone Is Watching,” Fielding explores themes of relationships, betrayal, and human resilience. Today we’ll talk about her latest novel, the psychological thriller “Jenny Cooper Has a Secret.” The book follows a 76-year-old widow named Linda who visits Legacy Place, a memory care facility where she meets 92-year-old Jenny Cooper, a dementia patient who shocks Linda with a confession: “I kill people.” Initially dismissing it as delusion, Linda grows intrigued as Jenny lucidly recounts tales of her victims—mostly men who wronged her. When a resident dies under seemingly natural circumstances, Linda begins to question whether Jenny’s claims might hold truth. Then, we’ll hang out with singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. Often called a “songwriter’s songwriter,” his fans include Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen and many, many others. He’s release 17 albums to date, and collaborated with producers like Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom and Bob Rock. His songwriting appears on albums from Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris and Feist. Today we talk about his latest album, “Hangover Terrace,” The album was sparked during Ron’s extended stay in the UK in late 2024, following his Sexsmith at Sixty tour. Inspired by time spent recording at London’s Eastcote Studios, Ron says the album was inspired by “the hangover I feel from the last few years of pandemic and life knocking us around.”

You get Dan Kiernan — charismatic, candid, and full of stories. In this lively conversation, Graham and Dan cover everything from the unpredictable world of televised singing competitions to learning to sing over tone-deaf churchgoers, surviving tough crowds, and why every artist secretly wants that “TV moment.” Expect laughs, behind-the-scenes revelations, Tina Turner impressions, and a glimpse into Dan's upcoming music. If you love music, talent show gossip, and a bit of festive plotting (yes, there's talk of a Christmas special), this is one you won't want to miss.

This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring a live panel discussion on the legacy of William Adam and AdamFest, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "AdamFest 2025 Panel Discussion" About the William Adam Trumpet Festival (AdamFest): The 11th Annual William Adam International Trumpet Festival will take place June 19–22, 2025, at Austin Peay State University, hosted by Dr. Rob Waugh. This year's festival brings together a distinguished roster of William Adam's former students—many of whom are among today's leading trumpet artists—for four days of inspiration, performance, and pedagogy. In the spirit of Mr. Adam's legacy, the festival offers a rich mix of masterclasses, performances, complimentary private and group lessons, and targeted seminars on topics such as jazz improvisation, orchestral playing, trumpet fundamentals, and effective teaching. Special programming is available for younger students and their educators. William Adam taught trumpet at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music from 1946 to 1988 and continued teaching privately until his passing in 2013. Widely regarded as one of the most influential trumpet pedagogues of the 20th century, his teaching emphasized sound, simplicity, and personal connection. The annual festival ensures his philosophy continues to inspire new generations of trumpet players. His versatile résumé spans symphonic, studio, and touring work, with credits including The Temptations, Tony Bennett, Dr. Dre, and Broadway productions like Evita and A Chorus Line. Since joining Earth, Wind & Fire in 2004, he has performed on major stages around the world, from the White House to the Grammys. He currently teaches at Cal State Long Beach, Citrus College, and the Henry Mancini Institute, where he's known for his deep diagnostic insight and mentorship. Charley is also the founder of Charles Davis Music Products, producing a signature line of trumpets and mutes that reflect his commitment to excellence in both sound and craftsmanship. Robert Slack is a seasoned trumpeter, educator, and recording artist with a master's degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University, where he studied under the legendary William Adam. His diverse career has included everything from orchestras and brass ensembles to touring with Buddy Rich and Paul Anka, and performing in Las Vegas showrooms with stars like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Now based in Los Angeles, Robert has built an extensive studio career with credits spanning film, television, and commercial work. A former student of William Adam at Indiana University, Larry has built a prolific recording career with credits spanning film, television, and albums for artists including Elton John, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Placido Domingo. His ability to adapt his sound to any musical context has made him a first-call player in the L.A. studio scene. Dr. Karl Sievers is a distinguished performer and educator whose career spans orchestral, jazz, and commercial music. A former student of William Adam, he holds a DMA in trumpet performance and recently retired as a Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma. A former baseball standout from one of Texas' top-ranked high schools, Britton made a bold pivot from the field to the stage in 2022. After an accomplished athletic career filled with championship victories and junior college play, he chose to follow his musical calling instead of pursuing sports scholarships. Music has always been in his blood. His father was a gospel singer before founding a church with Britton's mother, where Britton continues to develop his voice through worship as well as writing his own music. Growing up with both White and Hispanic heritage, Lucia struggled to connect with her Mexican roots as she was raised away from that side of her family. Determined to embrace her lineage, she became fluent in Spanish while studying abroad in Spain. As a passionate music lover raised in Washington state, Lucia was particularly influenced by Brandi Carlile. A chance encounter in 2018, while Lucia was helping set up for Brandi's rehearsal at her high school, led to an impromptu singing session with one of the band members. Brandi overheard Lucia's talent and invited her to perform at a fundraiser concert. Today, Lucia performs regularly at local festivals and recently achieved a milestone by headlining her first show.ABOUT THE VOICEGet amped up!
