In this episode, I talk with Isaac Dyck from Durango, Mexico, about the growing need for Low German literature among the Plautdietsche Mennonite people. No Greater Joy's comic book Good and Evil has recently been translated into Low German, called Goot and Bees. We discuss the challenges and importance of making gospel-centered resources accessible in our mother tongue, as well as the process of translating and printing this powerful book.

The word ‘joy' is in popular use at this time of year, but from a spiritual perspective, what is ‘joy'? It is vastly different from what is called JOY today! The final and short 3rd letter of the aging disciple John is addressed to “the beloved Gaius.” who, says John, “I love in truth,” adding, “For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth.” [v.3] So Truth is something you walk in; that is, a pathway you choose, a way of living. Total sincerity in thinking and doing. Then in the next verse, John adds, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” In John's 2nd letter, one to a “lady and her children” he had made a similar comment, “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father” adding “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments…” [v.4,6] When you walk you usually have some destination in view, you are not wandering aimlessly. The beloved disciple John, now calling himself “the elder”, has a major concern to see others have a godly purpose in their lives. What a contrast this is to the meaningless frivolity that so many count as ‘joy' today. May we each have genuine joys in our lives; feeding our minds on God's word is an ‘investment' that leads to genuine joy.
It may feel a bit jolting to shift our focus from national politics back to mundane life in the local polis, to our own homes. Yet, as Samuel Johnson famously observed, “To be happy at home is the end of all human endeavor.” Even in 1750, this was not a new or novel idea. “The return home” forms the basic premise of the book of Genesis, Homer's Odyssey, Virgil's Aeneid, and just about every other story you can think of. “Domestic tranquility” is even at the heart of our Constitution. So, why do we pretend that joy is somewhere “out there?” Why do we expend so much time, energy, and money on our questing and conquering and other ambitions? Well, in part it's because we are not yet home, and we know it. Even at our “permanent” addresses, we are, as the Bible puts it, strangers in a strange land, foreigners and exiles. As I read a very appropriately timed Psalm 137 in the Soul Room on Election Day this week, I was arrested by how the Psalmist would rather be cursed to lose his gift of song than fail to direct its powers toward the vision of Jerusalem. It would have been so easy to assimilate to Babylon, or even to harden his heart against wistful longings for deliverance. Only the persistently stirred vision of Zion could prevent him from taking those easy outs. As we look this weekend to a passage that talks about “no greater joy,” it's important to have in mind that there's something even “above [our] highest joy.” It's the thing to which we point all our work and longing and ambitions. Jerusalem is not merely a city. It is rather the fulfilled promise of God's dwelling richly with us, in a place overflowing with the harvested fruit of all our well-directed joys. It is a place where our children might peacefully walk in the truth together, welcoming the stranger and exile home again, and for the first time.

Summary: The Apostle John speaks the joy of every parent, and that is seeing their children walking in the love and truth of the Lord. While this is true for every parent, it is also an expression of the joy our Heavenly Father has when we His children do the same. In our passage, the Lord will declare 5 things that when we do them brings Him joy. Join us as we look into the Heart of the Father.

What is the difference between happiness and joy? If you were to list the top four things that add joy in life, what might be on that list? As believers in Jesus, we have been called to live out our faith in a world that is increasingly syncretistic and secularized. Within that context, if you wanted to, how would you measure the vitality and effectiveness of your own spiritual life? The apostle John was one of the closest disciples of Jesus and John's writings offer us both pastoral and practical insight into what it looks like to “walk in the truth” of the Gospel and to know the joys of faithful discipleship.Join Pastor Jim as he teaches through this short but powerful ancient letter we call 3 John.

Having had an instrumental part in the foundations of some of America's most storied Christian schools, having been involved in the genesis of Liberty University and Lynchburg Christian Academy, and working at Life Ways Christian Publishers during the explosion of home school education, Schultz knows the in's and out's, the high's and low's of Christian education and Biblical worldview. And, having stood the tests of time and tumult, he's unafraid to speak his encouragement and correction directly, confronting the inevitable cultural decline that results when we try to segregate God and education. This summer, we have the amazing opportunity to spend seven weeks with Schultz, working through his ground-breaking book, "Kingdom Education". Welcome to this Scripture Hike of 3 John 1-8 with the Nomads! There are certain things we learn about a mountain only by hiking it, one laborious, yet exhilarating step at a time. When we stay in the moment enough to let it fill our senses with freshness and beauty, the hike becomes a part of us. We nomads have set out on a new quest in this series of NomadsYouAndi podcasts we're calling “Scripture Hikes” to discuss the word of God at a pace that is similar to the hikes we've been taking while we're living nomadically. Come join us now for a hike through the Word where we'll encounter spiritual truths that we've found to be more strengthening to our spirits, more fragrant to our hearts, and more refreshing to our souls, than any evergreen forest, pristine mountain spring, or mountain peak we've ever experienced.

We live in a world that often values material possessions, status, and personal gain over the pursuit of truth and love in Christ. By investing in children's spiritual growth, we can experience the profound joy of seeing our children living for Jesus Christ.
On this episode, Sadie and Gavi are once again joined by Dr. Shoshana Fagen, who lends her considerable expertise to the discussion of the ubiquitous and infamous fundamentalist parenting book/child abuse manual, "To Train Up A Child," By Michael and Debi Pearl. The techniques recommended in this book have been used by fundamentalist families like the Duggars for decades. Together with Shoshana, they examine how truly horrible and harmful this book is, and what healing from this sort of upbringing might look like.TW: In general we talk about a lot of potentially triggering topics on this show, including but not limited to suicide and mental health, racism, misogyny, PTSD and PTSD symptoms, child abuse, mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse including guilt, shame, and fear. In most episodes we'll mention at least a few of these topics, but we try very hard to avoid graphic detail unless it's relevant to the story we're telling, and we do our best to give the audience a heads-up before going into detail on any of these topics. This Entire Episode carries a trigger warning for child abuse, specifically, hitting, spanking, hitting with implements, what implements are recommended to hit your child, how to break a child's spirit. We will of course be validating survivors of such abuse, talking scientifically about why it's not okay, trying to use language that's less triggering, but it is the topic of the episode. We will also more briefly mention topics such as complimentarianism, wives submitting to husbands, marital rape, and briefly mention the deaths of several children which were related to the teachings put forth in this book. Lin Nicolet speaks on how our names carry the essence of who we uniquely and divinely are, and our names are what is written, recorded, eternally engraved forever citizenship in Heaven, bought with the blood of Christ. When we priorities rejoicing in the greatest gift of our names being written in Heaven, we will walk in our full authority on earth. How we live continuously from a heart of rejoicing is what keeps us focused on what really matters: Jesus. Luke 10:17; Hebrews 12:1-2

Meet Kelly Miller. Formerly a standout in the software industry, Miller became the Dean of Student Life for the Amazima School in Jinja, Uganda, and visits the Walking Through Samaria podcast to talk about what the Holy Spirit has done and is doing in the lives of people who are “going against culture to follow Jesus” and becoming examples in their own communities. He has been married to Danlyn for 25 years, and though they have no biological children of their own, they became father and mother figures to their Ugandan students, who used to call him “Uncle Kelly.” He's undertaken 13 overseas mission trips, but upon rigorous self-examination questioned whether what he was doing was genuine service to God as opposed to a point of religious pride. Once he resolved that question, he says, he found himself on a “journey to unshakable faith and complete joy” which led him to write an upcoming book called “No Greater Joy.” The key, Miller says, is being properly motivated. “If somebody's motivation is for the other person's benefit, whatever we're doing — whether it's buying somebody's Starbucks coffee or just asking somebody, ‘Hey, what do you know about Jesus?' — you can do ministry everywhere, anywhere, anytime,” he says. “If we want to do something meaningful for others, meaningful for the Kingdom, and faith-building for us in our own walk with Christ, we have to do it with the strength of the Holy Spirit. If we try to do it on our own, we will fall into selfish motivations.”
