Dr. Eli Levenson-Falk joins Sebastian Hassinger, host of The New Quantum Era to discuss his group's recent advances in quantum measurement and control, focusing on a new protocol that enables measurements more sensitive than the Ramsey limit. Published in Nature Communications in April 2025, this work demonstrates a coherence stabilized technique that not only enhances sensitivity for quantum sensing but also promises improvements in calibration speed and robustness for superconducting quantum devices and other platforms. The conversation travels from Eli's origins in physics, through the conceptual challenges of decoherence, to experimental storytelling, and highlights the collaborative foundation underpinning this breakthrough.Guest BioEli Levenson-Falk is an Associate Professor at USC. He earned his PhD at UC Berkeley with Professor Irfan Siddiqui, and now leads an experimental physics research group working with superconducting devices for quantum information science. Key TopicsThe new protocol described in the paper: “Beating the Ramsey Limit on Sensing with Deterministic Qubit Control." Beyond the Ramsey measurement: How the team's technique stabilizes part of the quantum state for enhanced sensitivity—especially for energy level splittings—using continuous, slowly varying microwave control, applicable beyond just superconducting platforms. From playground swings to qubits: Eli explains how the physics of a playground swing inspired his passion for the field and lead to his understanding of the transmon qubit, and why analogies matter for intuition. Quantum decoherence and stabilization: How the method controls the “vector” of a quantum state on the Bloch sphere, dumping decoherence into directions that can be tracked or stabilized, markedly increasing measurement fidelity. Calibration and practical speedup: The protocol achieves greater measurement accuracy in less time or greater accuracy for a given time investment. This has implications for both calibration routines in quantum computers and for direct quantum measurements of fields (e.g., magnetic) or material properties. Applicability: While demonstrated on superconducting transmons, the protocol's generality means it may bring improved sensitivity to a variety of platforms—though the greatest benefits will be seen where relaxation processes dominate decoherence over dephasing. Collaboration and credit: The protocol was the product of a collaborative effort with theorist Daniel Lidar and his group, also at USC. In Eli's group, Malida Hecht conducted the experiment. Why It MattersBy breaking through the Ramsey sensitivity limit, this work provides a new tool for both quantum device calibration and quantum sensing. It allows for more accurate and faster frequency calibration within quantum processors, as well as finer detection of small environmental changes—a dual-use development crucial for both scalable quantum computing and sensitive quantum detection technologies.Episode Highlights Explanation of the “Ramsey limit” in quantum measurement and why surpassing it is significant. Visualization of quantum states using the Bloch sphere, and the importance of stabilizing the equatorial (phase) components for sensitivity. Experimental journey from “plumber” lab work to analytic insights, showing the back-and-forth of theory confronting experiment. Immediate and future impacts, from more efficient calibration in quantum computers to potentially new standards for quantum sensing. Discussion of related and ongoing work, such as improvements to deterministic benchmarking for gate calibration, and the broader applicability to various quantum platforms. If you enjoy The New Quantum Era, subscribe and tell your quantum-curious friends!

So muss doch keine Sendung krankheitsbedingt ausfallen.

Here is a simple story about the origins of the human brain: All primate brains are good at packing neurons into a small space—they are neural supercomputers. The human brain is just what you'd expect from a monkey of our size: big, packed with neurons, but no more special than that. It's the chimps and gorillas who are special: without cooked food, their brains stay oddly small.Or so argues Suzana Herculano-Houzel, my guest in last week's episode. In today's episode, paleo-neurologist Dean Falk argues that the story is stranger still.I'll let her tell you why.Enjoy!DIG DEEPERSee also last spring's episode with Dean Falk on toolmaking and childhoods, as part of the Origins of Humankind -series. Anyone who grew up within broadcast range of Detroit tv in the 1980s will remember Ben Franklin's unlikely proverb from the ubiquitous Highland Appliance commercials on Presidents' Day.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6waErG4Qwc2. The commercial for Ghost Detective was inspired by “The Thing in The Tunnel,” an episode of Weird Circle radio show originally broadcast March 4th, 1945.https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Weird_Circle_Singles3. In November-December 1997, Burger King kid's meals contained toys promoting the animated feature film Anastasia, including the white bat Bartok who spoke three phrases. One of the phrases was “Stress, it's a killer.” Due to the cheap mechanism that played recorded phrases, a parent claimed on tv news that this delinquent toy was telling her child, “Hey, have a tequila.”4. I'm almost positive Falk has used the expression “love is love” in a past episode. But his memory is as bad as mine. Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions on the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, saying, “The United States has repeatedly condemned and objected to biased and malicious activities of Albanese that have long made her unfit for service as a Special Rapporteur.” Today we are joined by three of Albanese's predecessors—John Dugard, Richard Falk, and Michael Lynk, who talk about what these sanctions mean. They trace the United States' and Israel's longstanding attacks on not only Special Rapporteurs on Palestine, but the very claims to Palestinian rights. This latest instance is a particularly egregious attack on the UN and international law. We end with a plea to the international community to come to the aid of the Palestinian people, who are suffering famine, disease, and warfare of immense proportions.John Dugard SC, Emeritus Professor of Law, Universities of the Witwatersrand and Leiden; Member of Institut de Droit International; ; Director of Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, Cambridge (1995-1997); Judge ad hoc International Court of Justice (2000-2018); Member of UN International Law Commission (1997 -2011); UN Special Rapporteur on Situation of Human Rights in Occupied Palestinian Territory (2001-2008); Legal Counsel, South Africa v Israel (Genocide Convention).Richard Falk is Albert G. Milbank Professor Emeritus of International Law at Princeton University (1961-2001) and Chair of Global Law, Faculty of Law, Queen Mary University London. Since 2002 has been a Research Fellow at the Orfalea Center of Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Between 2008 and 2014 he served as UN Special Rapporteur on Israeli Violations of Human Rights in Occupied Palestine.Falk has advocated and written widely about ‘nations' that are captive within existing states, including Palestine, Kashmir, Western Sahara, Catalonia, Dombas.Falk has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times since 2008.Michael Lynk was a member of the Faculty of Law, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada between 1999 and his retirement in 2022. He taught courses in labour, human rights, disability, constitutional and administrative law. He served as Associate Dean of the Faculty between 2008-11. He became Professor Emeritus in 2023.In March 2016, the United Nations Human Rights Council unanimously selected Professor Lynk for a six-year term as the 7th Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967. He completed his term in April 2022.He has written about his UN experiences in a 2022 book co-authored with Richard Falk and John Dugard, two of his predecessors as UN special rapporteurs: Protecting Human Rights in Occupied Palestine: Working Through the United Nations (Clarity Press).Professor Lynk's academic scholarship and his United Nations reports have been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations General Assembly.
Hjertelig velkommen tilbake, folkens! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For the freshest fiction, buy my novella Sisyphus, Eat Your Heart Out, available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. How do I signal when the story is about to get gritty? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Catafalque Earth Moving Equipment is not affiliated with Monback Brothers Trash Hauling. 2. We did not hit this season's quota with episode 131. But there's still time.3. The often-repeated origin story of a certain vigilante detective in long underwear begins with his parents getting killed after they saw The Mark of Zorro. The Crimson Clown mentioned in this episode was another anti-hero from Johnston McCulley, creator of Zorro. No films of The Crimson Clown were released in our universe, to the best of my knowledge.4. How many spoonerisms did you count in this episode? I count at least three. I'm particularly proud of Mat Ban: The Narc Right Detournes.Credits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals. The music for “Come Listen to Mat Ban” is my poor attempt to sound like Joel Mabus's arrangement of “Blues in a Bottle,” first recorded and released 1928 by Prince Albert Hunt's Texas Ramblers although the original author is unknown, “traditional.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfT4cJA1n64&t=29sSound Effect Title: Rain.WAV by inchadneyLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/s/123703/ Sound Effect Title: Downpipe2.wav by digitfishmusicLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/people/digifishmusic/sounds/71594/?Sound Effect Title: Footsteps Dress Shoes Wood Floor.wavLicense: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/people/allrealsound/sounds/161756/Sound Effect Title: helmutscream_short.wav by creativeheroesLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/s/84353/ Sound Effect Title: Wood_Creak_02.wav by dheming License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/s/177779/ Sound Effect Title: Real Colt 45 M1911 (shot) by CarmelomikeLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0https://freesound.org/people/Carmelomike/sounds/255216/Sound Effect Title: Bouncing Glas Marbles.wav by Cymeon License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/245402/ Sound Effect Title: 06-1 Shovel by 16GPanskaKomarkova_Marina License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/496725/ Sound Effect Title: Footsteps on gravel by Joozz License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/people/Joozz/sounds/531952/Sound Effect Title: Beep 1 sec.wavLicense: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/people/austin1234575/sounds/213795/Sound Effect Title: 38 Caliber Gun Shot 5xRecorded by Mike KoenigLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0http://soundbible.com/375-38-Caliber-Gun-Shot-5x.htmlSound Effect Title: Punching with ivy by itsadequateLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0https://freesound.org/s/353676/ Sound Effect Title: Punches.wav by CGEffex License: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0https://freesound.org/s/94679/ Sound Effect Title: G24-01-Warner Brothers Body Fall.wav by craigsmith License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/438300/ The image accompanying this episode is a modified detail of a panel from the public domain Suspense Comics Number 6, October 1944, art by John Giunta. A note about the work "There were no poets of motherhood," from Leah Falk for the Michigan Quarterly Review's Summer 2025 issue: Motherhood has animated my poems since I became pregnant with my first daughter in 2019, but in this poem I return to a memory from before I had children, when motherhood was still an abstraction. After graduating from college, I worked in a bookstore near a prestigious university, and it was there that a well-known scholar and critic contended that there were “no poets of motherhood.” The claim seemed absurd to me even then, since I had been reading contemporary poets like Kim Addonizio, Rita Dove, Lucille Clifton, Rachel Zucker, and so many others who use their motherhood as a touchstone. My memory of her talk was among the first in which I realized that I could have an opinion that differed from someone so senior, and have evidence for it, too. In this poem I explore the imagined boundaries some might erect between scholarly and artistic pursuits and domestic and menial work, and what the cost of such borders might be to both art and labor.
On May 15, international legal experts Lara Elborno, Richard Falk, and Penny Green joined me to discuss the work of the Gaza Tribunal, a group devoted to creating an archive of facts and a set of documents and arguments to help international civil society fight against the genocide in Gaza and the Zionist regime that, along with the United States, has perpetrated this atrocity. Today they all return to update us. They present a grim picture of what they call the final phase of genocide and note both the overwhelming global support for Palestine and the concurrent repression against advocacy and protest. This is a critical episode to listen to and share.Lara Elborno is a Palestinian-American lawyer specialized in international disputes. She has worked for over 10 years as counsel acting for individuals, private entities, and States in international commercial and investment arbitrations. She dedicates a large part of her legal practice to pro-bono work including the representation of asylum seekers in France and advising clients on matters related to IHRL and the business and human rights framework. She previously taught US and UK constitutional law at the Université de Paris II - Panthéon Assas. She currently serves as a board member of ARDD-Europe and sits on the Steering Committee of the Gaza Tribunal. Not every Peter Falk performance comes with a rumpled coat and a homicide to solve. In this episode, we take a look at Griffin & Phoenix, a 1976 made-for-TV gem that finds Falk in rare romantic form. As Geoffrey Griffin, a terminally ill professor, Falk trades sharp wit for quiet heartbreak opposite Jill Clayburgh's Phoenix, a fellow traveler on a limited timeline. What might sound like a recipe for melodrama turns into something far more poignant and disarming, with Falk giving one of his most restrained and vulnerable performances. We dig into the film's TV-movie roots, its place in the 1970s “disease-of-the-week” wave, and how its frank, unvarnished take on death—and love—holds up nearly fifty years later. It's Peter Falk without the trench coat, but not without charm, soul, and a monologue or two.
In this episode of On Stage, Sports Business Journal's Executive Publisher Abe Madkour sits down with iconic sports agent David Falk for a conversation about the legacy of athlete empowerment and the business of storytelling. Recorded on May 20, 2025, at SBJ's 4se event in New York City, the conversation traces Falk's role in redefining what it means to represent an athlete—not just on the court, but across culture, commerce, and entertainment. Falk, who famously represented Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, and many more, shares: The Air Jordan Origin Story: How a revolutionary approach to marketing turned a rookie deal into a global brand. Agent as Architect: Why the most successful agents don't just negotiate—they help build enduring platforms and partnerships. Cultural Relevance: The fusion of sports, fashion, and music, and what it takes for an athlete to shape culture beyond the game. Leadership Lessons: What he's learned from four decades working at the intersection of sports, media, and influence. It's a one-of-a-kind conversation with a one-of-a-kind operator—part oral history, part masterclass in what it takes to build icons.
Understanding your audience's psychology is the key to crafting communication that resonates.Persuading others isn't about magic spells or mind-reading tricks. According to Emily Falk, the real secret is simpler: know what your audience finds relevant, and you'll be able to craft a message that resonates.Falk is a professor of communication, psychology, and marketing at the University of Pennsylvania, Vice Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication, and director of the Communication Neuroscience Lab. In her book What We Value: The Neuroscience of Choice and Change, she reveals that our brains have what she calls a "social relevance system" — our ability to understand what other people are thinking and feeling. "I use social relevance as this kind of catchall for these thoughts about what other people are thinking and feeling, which also helps us predict what they're gonna do and how we might communicate successfully with them," she explains. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Falk and host Matt Abrahams explore how to put this insight into practice, from the power of storytelling to leveraging "neural synchrony" to create shared understanding. Whether you're motivating a team or influencing a customer, Falk offers science-backed strategies for tapping into your audience's psychology and communicating with relevance.Episode Reference Links:Emily FalkEmily's Book: What We ValueEp.39 Brains Love Stories: How Leveraging Neuroscience Can Capture People's EmotionsEp.188 Mind Reading 101: To Know What Your Audience Thinks, Just Ask Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:47) - Neuroscience & Behavior Prediction (04:05) - Brain Systems in Persuasion (05:28) - Tailoring Messages for Impact (08:06) - Psychological Closeness & Relevance (10:34) - Power of Storytelling (13:48) - Neural Synchrony & Shared Meaning (15:33) - Better Conversations Through Sync (20:11) - Rapid-Fire Q&A with Emily Falk (24:23) - Conclusion ********This Episode is brought to you by Strawberry.me. Mathletics is gaining steam, the legendary Lee Iacocca, a strange little Michael Madsen film with a great cast, the passing of two political titans, some Falk talk, an unfortunately named new supplement I'm taking, remembering Hervé Villechaize, an arthouse classic sci-fi film from the 1970s, and David Bowie can't stop singing. Ever wonder why you choose an orange over an apple, or why your grandmother's feedback hits differently than a stranger's opinion? Meet Emily Falk, pioneering neuroscientist and author of What We Value, who reveals how we can transform our relationship with daily decisions by thinking like scientists about our own minds. Emily breaks down three brain systems that drive every choice we make: our value system (the final decision maker), our self-relevance system (what's "me" vs "not me"), and our social-relevance system (understanding what others think and feel). She shares personal stories about optimizing time with her 100-year-old grandmother and why her son preferred a handwritten certificate over money as a reward. We explore how social media influencers actually rewire our brain's reward calculations, why stories work better than facts for changing behavior, and how understanding these systems opens pathways to more purposeful choices and stronger influence with others.---Guy Kawasaki is on a mission to make you remarkable.
