Travis Fritts, a proud Michigander, embarked on a brewing journey that eventually shaped him into a master brewer with training in Germany. His educational path led him to the VLB at the Berlin Technical University, where he earned a diploma in Microbiology/biochemistry. Focused on brewing and brewery operations, Travis returned to Michigan, fueled by a mission to create high-quality, Michigan-made beer. This mission materialized with the founding of Old Nation Brewing Co., opening its doors in 2015 and ascending to become one of the top and largest independent breweries. This achievement was propelled by the steady expansion of brewing capacity and distribution reach, now spanning 18 states nationwide. Travis boasts a wealth of experience spanning two decades in pub/production brewing and brewery operations, rendering him a seasoned professional in the craft beer industry. His expertise extends beyond brewing, encompassing almost two decades of refining sales and distributor relations, complemented by over a decade dedicated to brand development and marketing within the dynamic Michigan craft beer scene. Beyond the brewing kettle, Travis finds joy in the company of his sons, immersing himself in music, and sharing his passion as a baseball coach. His commitment to both his craft and personal pursuits reflects a dynamic individual with a deep-rooted connection to Michigan and an unwavering dedication to the art of brewing. Old Nation Brewing Turps is a Double New England IPA by style. True to our reputation, Old Nation Brewing Co. has crafted yet another Hazy Double IPA that boasts not only a higher ABV but also easy drinkability with Turps. This time around, our brewers have sourced hops from the lush landscapes of the southern hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, resulting in a tantalizing blend of tropical notes that awaken the palate. This craft beer is 9% ABV and 65 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.

Podcast: Adjuncts are on review with guest Todd Ryan from Ryan Brewing In this podcast episode we delve into adjunct brewing with Ryan Brewing master brewer, Todd Ryan. The crew discusses the craft beer craze of adjunct brewing in detail. We'll talk about Todd's new start-up one-barrel craft beer system and visit his brewing past from explorations in Europe to Wyoming home-brew roots to the now 2-month opened for public consumption, Ryan Brewing in Roscoe, IL. And of course, we do some beer tastings....this time featuring M-43 NEIPA from Old Nation Brewing Co. in Williamston, Michigan, the first release in Othe “New Orthodox” IPA series utilizing a complex combination of Calypso, Simcoe, Citra and Amarillo hops. Not to outdone, Todd brough 4 fabulous beers from Ryan's Brewing, including his signature Schlopgarten German Hefeweizen, Back in Blackberry PA, a Cherry Apricot Sour and a delicious Kolsch with some steamy influence. Speaking of one barrel systems, we wondered in the real life, does size really matter?...Kent and Brent lead a another segment of BEER TAG, where they offer fact or fiction of different sizes of breweries, beer production, etc. and Mike and Todd have to guess whether the size given for each topic is indeed real or fake. Surprisingly, they both did quite well ... are you a beer know-it-all? If so, how did you do on this episodes beer tag? Finally, much like adjunct brewing, we shared clips from Opal, an American rock band in the 1980s from LA. They were part of the Paisley Underground musical style and come across as a fuzz-drenched infuse of Mazzy Star meets T-Rex. The band's name is derived from Opel, a song by Syd Barrett of early Pink Floyd fame. As is the case with many of our music clip features, Opal is extremely rare and difficult to find so we hope you enjoy the sneak preview of these fuzzy rock classics from our youth. When Travis Fritts and Nate Rykse started Old Nation Brewing Co. they brought 14+ years of brewing education and experience with them. They'd dedicated their lives to learning the technical aspects of brewing as well as the differences in brewing methods and ingredients across different cultures. The result is a brewery that blends these different methods and ingredients to produce unique beers. Initially, the beer they offered was "very traditional and technically accurate." Director of Growth & Strategy Mark Logusz recounts, "The beer was great, but it was not what anybody wanted to drink." With that realization, Fritts engaged the members of a local beer group to talk about new styles and after some discussion invited a few out to help with a pilot batch. The result was the first batch of M-43. Logusz sat down with us recently during M-43's Atlanta market launch. We chat about "testing the waters" in Atlanta at the Day of the Juice festival, trying to keep up with the demand for hazy IPAs, the difference in pasties and pasties, Old Nation's non-hazy offerings, and the International Festival of Lagers. On our quest to visit every brewery in Georgia in 2018 we visited Abide Brewing in Newnan and caught Line Creek Brewing Company's opening day. We also joined Wrecking Bar Brewpub to celebrate their 7th anniversary, and took a trip to SweetWater to sample their new 420 Strain G13 IPA, brewed with cannabis terpenes and hemp flavor. In the news this week Chinese-made brewing equipment gets exempted from tariffs, American aluminum price hikes raise some questions, a Swedish brewery prints tweets on beer foam, World Cup fans cause a beer shortage in Moscow, and London's Beavertown Brewery sells a minority stake to Heineken. Next week we're talking Beer and BBQ with The Beer Sommelier Matt Simpson and Smyrna Beer Market owner Brandon King. Just in time for your 4th of July planning. On todays episode I sit down with Joe from HomeGrown Brewing Company out of Oxford, MI. John and Marie Powers have spent the last year renovating the former Veterans Memorial Civic Center in downtown Oxford. Homegrown Brewing will showcase 6 flagships beers which include Cream Ale, a Belgian Wheat, an Australian-hopped IPA, a nutty Brown, a rich Stout, and an original style that John's coined a "Whamber" (a combination of Amber Ale and Wheat styles). The brewery is a family business through and through. John and Marie will keep a hands-on approach, with John Brew Master and Marie as the Interior Designer, while their children also bring their skills to the brewing endeavor. Their son Joe returned from Australia to work as Brewer and Production Manager, his wife Kate assists as Media Liasion, Jeff Powers overseas Brand Design and the front-of-house as General Manager, and the youngest sibling Katie Powers leads the Social Media program. I sat down with Joe, who was nice enough to give me some time day during brew their day to get a inside look at HomeGrown Brewing Company. Before we get to the interview lets take a look at this weeks Slurred Word Six Pack of the Week **Six Pack of the Week** YEAHHHH Thats right its another edition of the Six Pack of the Week. Remember if you would like to make an intro song for the six pack of the week post it on SoundCloud and tag it with #SixPackofTheWeek. This weeks pick is a N.E. IPA from Old Nation Brewing Co. called M-43. M-43 is the first release in Old Nation's "New Orthodox" IPA series. It is designed to accentuate the deep and complex character from the combination of Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops. This beer has a big citrusy/tropical aroma and flavor with notes of Pineapple, Mango, and Grapefruit. The hop bitterness is not particularly intense, which lends itself to a very drinkable, juicy IPA. The beer has a very destinctive haze not from the yeast, but rather from an interplay of lipids from the malted oat and oils and acids which naturally occur in the hand selected Dry hops. The Slurred Words Six Pack of the week is sponsored by 9 & Hilton Market, located at the corner of 9 Mile Rd and Hilton Rd in Ferndale MI. With a great selection of craft beer, wine, and spirits you are for sure to find something to enjoy. So head on down to 9 & Hilton Market and tell them Bill sent you.
