On this episode, Marc talks with Eric Shade, author of "All Over The Place - The Rise of The Bangles From The L.A. Underground," published in January of 2024. It's a super detailed, comprehensive biography of the Bangles from the childhoods of each member up to the present day, as well as a compelling depiction of the LA scene, especially the Paisley Underground, that they grew up from and are still really a part of. Eric has been a Bangles fan since he was a kid and the amount of knowledge and illustrations he has collected over the decades helped him make this a thorough book about a compelling band.As Eric writes, "The deeper I delved, a vast, interconnected network of individuals within the LA Underground unfolded. It was an enormous tapestry of impresarios, club promoters, ambitious artists, roadies, music enthusiasts, family members, and devoted friends. The Bangles were both part of this symbiosis and simultaneously stood apart from it all.”You can buy Eric's book here at Hozac's website. We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Eric Shade!

Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M. Also, who is Steve rooting for during the 2024 World Series? You won't want to miss this...and we wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Los Angeles 1983. While the hair hunx were leaving leather pant ass prints on the hoods of laundromat dryers, bands of the Paisley Underground scene were quietly cranking out sixties-style jingly-jangly psychedelia across town. The Rain Parade were the shortest-lived of all the P.U. bands, but their debut album Emergency Third Rail Power Trip helped garden just as much musical fruit of the future as it did pay tribute to the past.
Janice Headley dives into She Hangs Brightly by Mazzy Star. Born from California's Paisley Underground scene, the group is distinguished by the languid vocal style of Hope Sandoval, a Mexican-American songwriter who came into the spotlight in the 1990s. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate is our guest this week to kick off our fantastic fall season! The Dream Syndicate were part of Los Angeles' “Paisley Underground” scene that also included folks like The Bangles and The Three O'Clock. Their debut album from 1982, "The Days of Wine and Roses," is considered a classic today, and kicked off a long career for Steve and the band. Steve has a new memoir that just came out, “I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True” and a new solo record to go with it, “Make It Right.” On the episode, he shares with us a story about suddenly being thrust onto a much, much larger stage in the early days of the band. Musical credits: "Molly Molly" by Blue Dot Sessions "Santa Monica" by Steve Wynn "Sing My Blues" by Steve Wynn More about Steve and his books and records can be found here. Steve Wynn is a founding member of The Dream Syndicate, a key band in the so-called Paisley Underground scene of the early 1980's. Their debut album “The Days Of Wine And Roses” was recorded in three overnight sessions and released in 1982. It's one of the great indie-rock touchstones and a phenomenal debut. The band had high-profile support slots with the likes of U2 and REM, but the rest of the 1980's saw them struggling to capitalise on their potential, and by the end of the decade they had disbanded. Steve continued to have a prolific solo career, as well as side-projects such as The Baseball Project, a supergroup featuring Mike Mills and Peter Buck of REM, who only write and perform songs about baseball. The Dream Syndicate reformed and released the first of several comeback albums in 2017. They remain an ongoing concern, but for now Steve is about to release an autobiography, charting his fascinating childhood in California, and the rise and fall of The Dream Syndicate. It's a story of record stores, college radio, tour buses, major label shenanigans, told with warmth, humour and honesty. It's also accompanied by a new solo album entitled “Make It Right”, released on the same day as, and intrinsically linked to, the book. I've probably said this a lot, but this was genuinely one of my favourite conversations I've had for the podcast. I really hope you enjoy it. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcastX: @signalspodcast

This week on Transmissions, author, producer, archivist, and musician Pat Thomas. In the late '80s, he helped take the Paisley Underground overground with his label Heyday Records. Later, he helped bring out reissues by artists like Judee Sill, Sandy Bull, PiL, and more. And as if all that wasn't enough, he's the author of a number of essential counterculture histories, including 2012's Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975, 2017's Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary, and most recently, 2023's Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg. As you'll hear at the top of this episode, he was also the first guest we ever asked to be on Transmissions, only host Jason P. Woodbury hadn't quite got the hang of properly recording interviews. While that ill-fated talk was lost to time, this one isn't. Tune in for more on Ginsberg, the forthcoming Judee Sill documentary Lost Angel, and much more on this all new episode of Transmissions. In this episode, Kirk and Paul celebrate the seventh anniversary of "Music Raygun" with another Prince-adjacent topic, or dual topic in this case: Prince's Paisley Park label and the early-'80s Los Angeles-based Paisley Underground indie-rock scene. And yes, the two topics are related.
On this episode, Jeff and Soraya share a preview of upcoming episodes that are part of a Paisley Underground 2023 New Release Roundup.

Ladies and Gentlemen: der Paisley Underground!

In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. It's always a good feeling when artists you haven't heard from in a while come back with some of their strongest work. California's Rain Parade were one of the key bands of the Paisley Underground, the name given to indie bands like the Bangles and the Dream Syndicate who were focusing on melody and steeped in Big Star and the Byrds. Their '83 debut is still a masterwork of any genre. After switching to a major label, the usual challenges ensued and the band ceased, though the members all went on to other projects. This summer sees the release of the first Rain Parade album in 38 years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun, and it might be their strongest yet. Matt and Steven join us to discuss what motivated the new album, their collaboration process, the passing of Steven's brother and original member David Roback who went on to form Mazzy Star, and much more. It'll be hard to knock this album off my best of the year list. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod www.flatironrecordings.com

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to musician and ace copy editor Jon Klages, whose grandfather, musician/producer/record label owner Enoch Light likely was the genesis of the Stereo revolution. Yes, you heard me right, classically trained violinist Enoch Light was one of, if not the first, to realize that by placing more than one microphone in a recording studio, you could create a fuller, more dynamic sound to your then, Hi-Fi, and now Stereo system today. Whoa. While Enoch released 25 plus records in his career, it was his record labels Grand Award, Project 3 and Command that really are his legacy. The labels, specifically Command, were known for their audio fidelity as well as their groundbreaking abstract artwork, gatefold sleeves and extensive liner notes that make them so unique. Be it space age pop, jazz, classical, film scores, Bossa Nova or anything else under the sun, Enoch Light was a pioneer in bringing the best music to the consumer in the best light (pun intended) possible. We talk about Jon's being in the recording studio with Enoch and mother Julie Light Klages at many sessions Enoch oversaw with his pipe at the ready. We also spoke about Jon's father, lighting designer William Klages, winner of seven Emmy awards, who worked with both Ernie Kovacs and host Josh Mills' mother Edie Adams at NBC in the early 1950s. We talk to john about his own musical career in the 80s as part of the “Hoboken Sound” with The Individuals, his move to Los Angeles and playing with the LA music scene surrounding the Paisley Underground and his 2021 solo debut Fabulous Twilight. Oh and did we mention that Jon copy edited the upcoming Ernie Kovacs book Ernie in Kovacsland from Fantagraphics coming July 18? Or that he's copy editing Edie Adams second autobiography as well? No? Well, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast for some serious greatness.

The "Paisley Underground" scene birthed a lot of great bands in the '80's, but few went on to be as commercially successful as the Bangles. That success came with a price, as they were pulled away from the British Invasion and Power Pop sound that inspired them. But their first full-length album, All Over The Place, is one of the best records of the era. Before they were swayed by Prince or walked like Egyptians, they were one of the most promising successors to the sound of 60's jangle pop. Steve Wynn is singer-songwriter-guitarist for the Dream Syndicate and the Baseball Project, with a prolific solo career thrown in there as well. He's also one of the most thoughtful people in the rock world, someone who was saved from journalism by discovering punk rock yet has retained his searching spirit when it comes to making music. He takes us back to the Paisley Underground and the creation of The Days of Wine and Roses through his solo work, the all-star Baseball Project, and his current, even more exploratory version of the Dream Syndicate. He also goes deep into how he writes for each project and recalls his reaction to hearing that the Bangles' "Hero Takes a Fall" was about him. (Photo by Charles Cherney)

It might be the best a tambourine has ever sounded on a song…it just sparkles. “Fade Into You,” Mazzy Star's mid-90's MTV classic is the rare one hit wonder that transcends time and place. The song is such a warm blanket of sound that it was featured on countless mix tapes in the 90's, then placed prominently on every mix CD made by a sensitive guy in the early 2000's, and still lives on an immeasurable number of streaming playlists. (T)his song exists kind of out of time. It could have come out a couple years ago, or it could have come out in the 70s or the 90s. In the latest episode of One Hit History, Sloane Spencer sits down with musician M. Lockwood Porter to discuss a song that arose from the tail end of the Los Angeles music scene known as the Paisley Underground. Mazzy Star is fronted by the tantalizing wallflower Hope Sandoval and though the song was everywhere in 1994, neither Spencer nor Porter became familiar with the hit until years later. Porter shares details about his forthcoming fifth LP, which includes contributions from John Moreland. One of the things that makes this band so tantalizing is that my understanding is that Hope Sandoval is very shy and has stage fright…it just adds some mystery and depth to what you hear in the music. Want to hear more about that? Hello. M Lockwood Porter 0:35 Hi, how are you doing? Sloane Spencer 0:36 I'm great. How are you doing? Great. What's up with this next record? M Lockwood Porter 0:40 You know, it's becoming a little bit of a cliche at this point. But it's one of those lockdown records. Like so many other musicians, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands over the last year and a half, two years or so. And yeah, so for this one, you know, I just did a lot of recording at home, which I hadn't really done very much before on my previous records. You know, it was usually three live in the studio with a band but this one, I rushed up on my engineering skills and I bought some microphones and working on songs throu...
DJ Kingblind presents The Big Beat online radio show Podcast- This week we talk about & play the best music in a themed Podcast called "The Paisley Underground" The Paisley Underground is a musical genre that originated from California. It was particularly popular in Los Angeles, reaching a peak in the mid 1980s. Paisley Underground bands incorporated psychedelia, rich vocal harmonies and guitar interplay, owing a particular debt to 1960s groups such as Love and the Byrds, but more generally referencing a wide range of pop and garage rock revival Wanna find out more? visit www.djkingblind.com or search DJ Kingblind in your favorite podcast app to find out more!#podcastsonamazonmusic #podcast #music #glam #uk #rock #djkingblind #applepodcasts #googlepodcasts #art #bowie #thebangles #losangeles #paisleyundergroundFind all links for DJ Kingblind here: https://linktr.ee/kingblindSupport the show

The Paisley Underground might be the first mix-tape scene. Not really a genre at all, but a collective of people who had similar interests and influences who all happened to be in bands. The music was defined more by what it wasn't...not punk, not singer-songwriter, not hard rock, not New Romantic. It was entirely synthesized by openly combining parts of beloved sounds of the past into a fresh and forward-thinking way. The bands were composed of musicians who wore their hearts on their technicolor dreamcoat sleeves with regards to their love and devotion of 60s music. However, the sounds of the individual bands varied greatly, so it makes little sense to call it a true genre. More a scene that captured shared ideals and fashion sense. As Dream Syndicate main man Steve Wynn aptly put it: “We had enough in common with each other and almost nothing in common with anybody else.”It involved a wave of kids who became tired of the punk scene which had become what it initially railed against: stagnant music that was too concerned with maintaining status quo uniformity as the kids were getting too violent. Scores of kids who had initially fallen in love with the thrill and DIY mindset of punk, who'd grown bored and felt disenfranchised and left behind. Many of the Paisley Undergroundlings described themselves as bad punks, making music just for the sake of belonging rather than for the sake of the songs. It was the spirit of punk but with a more expansive sound. They started looking inward and backward to the more gentle and pretty sounds of the 1960s. But this wasn't a neo-hippy movement with romanticized political ideals and stereotypical retro wear. In fact, all the bands gleaned what they liked most about the 60s without any concern for being true to their heroes or dedicated to the sound and fashion.
