On today's episode I’m joined by Matt and Ken, the founders of a new Subscription box centered around the Craft Beer Industry, MiBEERBox. The purpose of MiBEERBox is to promote the craft breweries and introduce craft beer drinkers to these taprooms that we might not other see via swag, wearables, and glassware. Throughout this episode we get to hear how the idea for MiBEERBox came to be as well as how Matt and Ken got into the craft beer industry. Make sure you check out MiBeerBox.com and sign up for one of the subscription options. I personally went with the Premium option to get both the T-Shirt and the Glassware, you can never have too much glassware. You can hear both Matt and Ken on their podcast Better On Draft out of Podcast Detroit. On this weeks episode of the Slurred Words Podcast I'm joined by Armstrong, Redo, and Samassa to try and answer the aged old question, which brewery is better Bell's or Founders. Of course, with this being Slurred Words we do get a bit sauced and this turns into an imperfect comparison. The beers that we end up comparing head to head are: Bell's Lager of the Lakes vs Founders Solid Gold Bell's Porter vs Founders Porter Bell's Kalamazoo Stout vs Founders Breakfast Stout Bell's Expedition Stout vs Founders CBS We tried to do another round, but the words got to be a bit too slurred, thus the abrupt ending. The rules for the taste test were simple. Head to head, which of the two beers would you rather purchase again. We come to a SHOCKING conclusion. As we make our way towards the 100th episode I am very please to have back on the show Dan, Will, and Mike, my home brew experts from the Motor City Mashers home brew club. We met up a couple weeks back as I eased back into drinking beers to discuss what they have been up to since we last talked almost a year ago. It's been a while since sitting down with them. That of course is thanks to Holden and me not drinking beer to lose weight. Thankfully, I have started to incorporate more beer into my diet and may even do a home brew to christen my new house and garage. Because it's been so long since our last time podcasting together we had a lot to talk about. This maybe one of my longest podcasts to date. I think the conversation was worth it for sure. During the taping of this episode we sample a number of home brews they brought and some commercial beers from Founders, New Glarus, Mikkeller, and Deschutes. The beers were tasty and the company and conversation were great. I can't wait to get together with these guys again. I hope you all enjoy. Remember if you have any comments or questions you can send them to BillsBeerReport@gmail.com or on twitter & Facebook @BillsBeerReport. Hell you can even slide into my DMs on Instagram @SlurredWordsPodcast Before starting the show I would just like to say the one thing I'm high on this week is family. Last week I got to go visit my parents and brother in Phoenix. It was a great time, we enjoyed getting out of the cold weather of MI and enjoying the nice sunny weather in AZ. It was the first time traveling with our son Holden and he was a rockstar. So that whole experience was pretty great. I can't wait to do it again.

Hey Folks! It's been a while since my last episode and for that I apologize. Life has gotten in the way of sharing whats in my brain with you fine folks. So instead of going another week without an episode I decided to pull from the now debunked Billiam Things to Say podcast archives for this weeks episode. So this week you will hear my brother Matt and I reviewing two books that we read. First we will review The Dip by Seth Godin. Seth is a well known author and entrepreneur and you may have heard him on The Tim Ferris Show. His book The Dip was a good read for those creative people who may find themselves in The Dip! The second book is The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I read this book because one of my favorite comedians, Bert Kreischer (The Machine), recommended it on his podcast. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone. If you like this format I can continue to pull from the archives, its not that deep. I can also continue with books I've read recently. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Slurred Words podcast. This weeks episode is Dr James Buccellato, author of Early Organized Crime in Detroit: Vice, Corruption and the Rise of the Mafia. James is a faculty member in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northern Arizona University. James taught at the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI for several years. He researches and writes about the politics of crime. His book, Early Organized Crime in Detroit: Vice, Corruption and the Rise of the Mafia was released on The History Press back in 2015. The book explores Detroit's stuggle with gang violence, public corruption and the politics of vice during the tumultuous first half of the 20th century and includes rarely published images from the area. Italian American Organized Crime in America is one of my favority history topics and I was exstatic when I stumbled upon James' book about Detroit. As we discuss in this podcast, Detroit usually plays third fiddle in the discussion of Italian American organized crime behind New York City and Chicago. His book is very informative about the early rise of organized crime in Detroit. It especially caught my eye, while reading the book, that he writes about his great grandpa and great uncles. Before we get to the conversation with James I first have to announce the winner of the HomeGrown Brewing Companys Mug Club membership giveaway. And the winner of the exclusive mug club membership from HomeGrown Brewing company is Chris Broomhead! Thanks to all the folks who participated in this first giveaway! Hello and welcome to another episode of the Slurred Words Podcast, I am your host Bill Lowe. It's been a two weeks since the last podcast and there is a good reason for that. My wife and I went into the hospital to have our first son the day I posted the last episode with Chow Down Detroit. Since then I have been busy being a new dad to my brand new baby boy. Now I had recorded this weeks episode the week leading up to my sons birth and have now had some time to sit down and edit and produce this episode. I first want to take a minute to thank Will who brought a care package of amazing food to my house the week after my wife and I returned home with our son. It was an amazing gift and I greatly appreciate it. So thank you Will. On today's episode we have our first 3-peat guests, Will, Mike, and Dan from the Motor City Mashers Home Brew club. We hear about what they've been brewing as well as Mike and Dan's experience at Home Brew Con in Minneapolis a couples weeks ago. I also have the guys taste my first ever All-Grain home brew and give me their brutal honesty. Remember to follow me @BillsBeerReport on all social media. Before we get to the show heres another edition of the Slurred Words Six Pack of the Week ***Six Pack of the Week*** Yeahhhhh This weeks Six Pack of the Week is Exeter from Short's Brewing Company. Exeter is an American Sour Ale fermented with Strawberry and lemon. This gives your lips a pucker, but once you adjust to the tart taste Exeter is super enjoyable. Coming in at 6.5% ABV its not too high where you can enjoy a couple on a warm summer day. It pours with a nice Ruby Red color and big sour fruit aroma. Nice to look at and even better to drink. Look for Exeter in a bottle shop near you. The Slurred Words Six Pack of the week is sponsored by 9 & Hilton Market, located at the corner of 9 Mile Rd and Hilton Rd in Ferndale MI. I met up with Doug and Scott at the future home of Rustic Leaf at 7200 Highland Rd, Waterford Twp, MI 48327. Doug and Scott were great guys, and I had a great conversation with them about their history in craft beer and brewing. This weeks Slurred Words Six Pack of the Week is Devastation by Brewery Vivant. This beer was an experiment to see what happens when hops are aged in wood. Tree Bucket, our Belgian inspired DIPA, is aged in freshly drained bourbon barrels until the balance of hops and wood is just right. This hedonistic pairing of huge mango aromas from Citra hops and rich vanillin from charred wood will make your wonder why it's dark beers that get the barrel time. The beer has a well balanced of hops and wood with huge mango aromas from the Citra hops and rich vanilla from the charred wood. John and Marie Powers have spent the last year renovating the former Veterans Memorial Civic Center in downtown Oxford. Homegrown Brewing will showcase 6 flagships beers which include Cream Ale, a Belgian Wheat, an Australian-hopped IPA, a nutty Brown, a rich Stout, and an original style that John's coined a "Whamber" (a combination of Amber Ale and Wheat styles). The brewery is a family business through and through. John and Marie will keep a hands-on approach, with John Brew Master and Marie as the Interior Designer, while their children also bring their skills to the brewing endeavor. Their son Joe returned from Australia to work as Brewer and Production Manager, his wife Kate assists as Media Liasion, Jeff Powers overseas Brand Design and the front-of-house as General Manager, and the youngest sibling Katie Powers leads the Social Media program. I sat down with Joe, who was nice enough to give me some time day during brew their day to get a inside look at HomeGrown Brewing Company. Before we get to the interview lets take a look at this weeks Slurred Word Six Pack of the Week **Six Pack of the Week** YEAHHHH Thats right its another edition of the Six Pack of the Week. Remember if you would like to make an intro song for the six pack of the week post it on SoundCloud and tag it with #SixPackofTheWeek. This weeks pick is a N.E. IPA from Old Nation Brewing Co. called M-43. M-43 is the first release in Old Nation's "New Orthodox" IPA series. It is designed to accentuate the deep and complex character from the combination of Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops. This beer has a big citrusy/tropical aroma and flavor with notes of Pineapple, Mango, and Grapefruit. The hop bitterness is not particularly intense, which lends itself to a very drinkable, juicy IPA. The beer has a very destinctive haze not from the yeast, but rather from an interplay of lipids from the malted oat and oils and acids which naturally occur in the hand selected Dry hops. The Slurred Words Six Pack of the week is sponsored by 9 & Hilton Market, located at the corner of 9 Mile Rd and Hilton Rd in Ferndale MI. The year is 1992! I was four years old and started paying attention to classic films like Encino Man, SideKicks, Captain Ron, and Toys. Some of the best movies of 1992 didn't come to my attention until many years later when I had come to enjoy gritty dramas like Diggstown and Juice. Or when my obsession/Fan boy-ness for Matt Damon had fully blossomed and led me to School Ties, which is packed with great young talent like Ben Affleck, Brendan Fraser, Chris O'Donnell, and of Matty D. The movies on my top ten list for 1992 span many different genres of film from comedy and animation to sports and action/adventure. 1. Aladdin 2. A league of there own 3. A few good men 4. Mighty ducks 5. White men cant jump 6. Reservoir dogs 7. Wayne's world 8. My cousin vinny 9. Sister Act 10. 3 Ninjas
