A decade-and-a-half ago, West Coast DIPAs were changing the craft beer curious into full-on obsessives, and breweries were in an IBU arms race to melt faces with hop bitterness. Recently, now that some of the haze has settled, breweries are returning to the aggressive style again - with some bringing newer juicy hop varietals to the mix, while others attempt to throw it back to the classics. For this episode, we enthusiastically drink through five locally made West Coast Double IPAs and can't really agree on anything other than the beers taste too dang good. Also, Craig's hyped about the features of his new chair, Ryan swears he did his research, and we put a few hops into the Hop Hall of Fame. I've never given Birmingham the credit it's due. The City of 1000 Trades knows and loves its beer. And yet, for some unknown reason, for many drinkers who live outside the area it doesn't rank among the UK's top beer towns. As I learned on my most recent visit, this sentiment is neither fair nor accurate. In reality, Birmingham has not only a thriving but a varied scene. In the town centre you can hop from proper pubs such as the Post Office Vaults or The Wellington, to craft beer joints like Tilt or Kilder, or to brewery taprooms such as Dig or Burning Soul. Like a lot of bigger cities, however, some of the best beer in modern beer culture lies beyond this periphery. Neighbourhood bars and bottle shops are becoming cornerstones of the suburban communities, as are its breweries. In Stirchley, to the south of central Birmingham, the scene is thriving, and it's here where Glasshouse Beer Co. has made its home. Founded in 2018, the brewery has quickly established itself both locally, and in some of the more beer savvy venues around the UK. This is largely thanks to its mastery over hazy pale ales, which range from sessionable table beers, right the way through to almighty DIPAs. There's far more to this young brewery than a bit of fuss though, and it's already dialling in other styles, from lagers, to barrel aged sour beers. I sat down for a fun, beer fuelled chat with founder Josh Hughes, lead brewer Dave Sharp, and head of sales Josh Mitchell. We cover a lot of ground, talking about the brewery and the beers themselves, to digging into why Birmingham's beer scene doesn't get its fair share of the limelight. Seeing as its four blokes sat around the table (a classic beer podcast scenario, one might say) we also take time to discuss the recent reckoning within craft beer, and how groups like ours can take proper accountability and action in light of accusations of sexism and workplace abuse.

Howdy Chuggalos! I dont want to talk too high about this episode, but really this is the best one we have done in at least a week! Today we double YOUR pleasure again w/ two DIPAs represented by Pipeworks: Devil Firefish & Drekker: Involuntary Narcissistic. This is a social distanced pod, but an economically entertaining amount of fun represented by the enormous amounts of emphatic eulogizing energy escalated by enigmatic opinions. ENJOY this one and tell your friends. Cheers!
This episode we stop by Big Owl Craft Brew House and Turkey Forrest Brewing in Houston. DIPAs and some great food was had.

DreZ, Big Nate and MattVoice are ready for another round and this time it's some DIPAs from Old Nation Brewing Co. Duck Foot Brewing Company and Taft's Brewing Company . #BrewsdayTuesday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the case of an IPA, higher hop intensity and extra juiciness are a given. In fact, the style is often attributed to Vinnie Cilurzo, now owner and brewmaster of renowned Russian River Brewing Co. In 1994 rumor has it that Cilurzo while working for Blind Pig Brewery added too much mash to his upcoming beer. Instead of tossing it he ran with it. He later took his innovation to Russian River Brewing where Pliny the Elder became one of the most highly regarded DIPAs in the country. Since then many breweries coast-to-coast have powered up their IPAs, making it one of the most popular styles in the country. Need proof? In 2020 Double / Imperial IPAs ranked as the third highest checked in style on Untappd with 34,000 different DIPAs appearing on the app and 6,585,229 total check-ins. That's a lot of check-ins! To do our part we're drinking G-Bot from @newenglandbrewingco to unlock the “2X” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers that contain Imperial / Double in its style name. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Sustainability and ethics are not only becoming a part of brewery life but are starting to come to the forefront for the modern beer business. One brewery who are serious about working out their CO2 emissions and make a real life difference is Cheltenham’s DEYA Brewing Company. DEYA have become synonymous with their flagship beer, Steady Rolling Man: a soft, opaque New England style Pale Ale that is like drinking a cloud made of tropical fruits. Theo Frayne, a brewer who studied a Masters of Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt and then completed internships at both Odell Brewing Co. in Colorado and Cotswold Brewery, closer to home, took a leaf out of breweries such as Sierra Nevada's book and focused on perfecting one beer, dialing in the recipe until it was perfect. And it is perfect: a modern classic on every level. It’s little wonder why DEYA have attracted so much attention and affection in the world of beer through that beer alone, not to mention the other fantastic DIPAs, IPAs and other styles to come from their 40HL brewery. For anyone who has conversed with Theo himself, you’ll understand how and why DEYA have achieved the success they have in a relatively short space of time. He is a switched on, intelligent guy who has a deep understanding of both the brewing process and the practical aspects of running a business. THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY... This week, we're joined by the first guest ever to give Matty Energy a formidable match, Bob Cutler of Novio's Bistro. Bob is Matt's old boss, and their story traces back to the early days of the Family Dog, a time which represents Matty's oft-mentioned experience of "coming from food". Since then, Bob has ditched hot dogs and DIPAs for steak tartare and 12-year whiskey with Novio's. We get into the meaning of the restaurant's "inspired bistro" tagline, the critical importance of experience and comfort in any food or drink setting, the surprisingly exclusive ways Novio's has pivoted through COVID, and why beer STILL doesn't seem to get no re-spect when it comes to having a seat at the fine dining world's white linen table. Naturally, we also dive into the beginnings of this chapter in Matty's life, the ways he and Bob were such a great (if not absolutely exhausting) match in a young business, and how they both learned the immense value of not being afraid at throwing anything and everything at the proverbial wall in the pursuit of growth. It might have been the pre-noon whiskey pours, but this long-awaited conversation managed to pack in even more than expected. Noah's still deep asleep to recover, but it was all worth it.

A monthly exploration of the wonderful and creative world of craft beer. We are two guys, called Dave, who love to talk all things craft beer! Head brewer Alex Hill from Black Country aces Green Duck pops in to give us an update on what he's been up to post lockdown, and we are delighted to reveal details of our new link-up with haul-beer.com and bring you a very special discount to use on their webshop.
As you know, since lockdown began we’ve changed the focus of our shows to interview breweries. We’ve loved doing them but we felt like a change and record a few episodes in our old style. Obviously we couldn’t share 6 beers per episode but what we were able to do was put some decent beers head to head. So we invited @charlieayling1 of @craftcangang fame along with Ryan @thebeardedbeerbloke along for a couple of shows with beers kindly provided by new online retailer @thefuss.club https://thefuss.club/ and recorded them back to back. Listen/Watch for an exclusive offer code. This episode is a Single Hop Showdown - pitching Nelson Sauvin against Simcoe. Verdant Brewing Co Unconventional Tactics against Deya Brewing Saturated in Simcoe. Both 8% DIPAs. As we drink and announce the winner we also have our regular features. Part 2 - with 2 different beers - will be streaming soon. We really hope you enjoy these 2 shows, let us know what you think, if you enjoy them we will record a few more. If you’ve got some feedback for the show, please let us know! Many thanks, as always, for your continued support. You can watch this episode on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DceAMARW-cA

We can all use a heaping helping of beer-based nostalgia right now, so we spend an hour drinking and talking about one of the most significant craft breweries Chicagoland has ever known: 3 Floyds. For the first time ever, we have five different beers from the Munster, Indiana-based brewery represented, including three that really get us story-telling. Though this was recorded at the early stages of quarantine, Ryan’s lead-up indicates that it’s already gotten to his head a bit. We also talk about wide mouthfeels, classic DIPAs, hop extract vs. other extracts, and the indefinite (and not totally unfortunate) end of line bottle shares. We’ve got that curbside weird you ordered all ready for you. Recorded 3/18/20 Beers Reviewed Region X (Dortmunder-style Lager) Alpha King (Pale Ale) Zombie Dust (Pale Ale) Arctic Panzer Wolf (Double IPA) Wigsplitter (Imperial Oatmeal Stout w/ Espresso)
This episode, we explore DIPAS from Mother Earth, Stone, & Bell's, with a TIPA from Beer Zombies to top it off. Strawberry fields forever holmes, reconnecting with old friends, the cosmic joker & the failing machine, is equality virtuous?, explaining eugenics to a 5 year old, questions for white people, the poverty of philosophy, MEAT!
Happy 2020! Join Justin, Dan, Mark, Walt and Adam this week on a throwback Thursday episode as we discuss one of our favorite DIPAs. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Nestled in a railway arch down in Ardwick, Manchester, is a brewery doing things differently to its next door neighbours. Within a stone's throw of Wander Beyond, Alphabet Brewing Company and Track Brew Co - and a mere walk from Cloudwater - Manchester Union Brewery are not turning out big juicy DIPAs or thick luscious imperial stouts, but have turned to traditional central European lager brewing techniques with a modern local twist to create a unique legacy beer that the people of Manchester can be proud to call their own. Talking to Will Evans - an employee of Cave Direct in the North and one of the four directors of Manchester Union Brewery - we discuss some of the challenges Will and his business partners have faced in running a lager brewery, including being muscled off taps by multinationals, fermentation times vs. cash flow, and running a tap room bar next to some of the UK's hottest craft breweries. Although we didn't record sampling the lagers themselves, they were utterly sublime! Eric and Dan are back in action (minus Evan) after a second summer hiatus to bring you the Beats, Beards & Brews episode you deserve. Where's Evan? He recently opened a pizza joint in Des Moines called Papa Keno's Drake, which is understandably taking up his time. On the first non-trio episode of the podcast, Dan and Eric review Alice in Chains' latest album, Rainier Fog, the band's third album to feature dual lead vocals from William DuVall and Jerry Cantrell. The bearded duo then gives an in-depth review of GoodBeards, a veteran-owned beard company based out of Des Moines, Iowa. Eric and Dan give reviews of three of its beard oils: Amber Waves (Amber, Sandalwood, Tea Tree) Return to Valhalla (Sea Breeze, Cedarwood, Bergamot) Citrus Knockout (Grapefruit, Lemongrass, Blood Orange) Eric also shares his thoughts on GoodBeards' hand-crafted Pine Tar and Cedar Castile beard and body soap. Spoiler alert: It's good. Finally, Dan and Eric drink down two different Stone DIPAs. Eric reviews the 9.1% abv Stone 22nd Anniversary "No Haze" Anni-Matter Double IPA, while Dan gives his fresh take on Fear.Movie.Lions, a hazy, 8.50% New England-style DIPA.

Be cautious beer audio traveler, there’s a dense fog advisory covering this episode as we blindly taste through six New England-style hoppy beers. We pit murky IPAs and DIPAs from Illinois against the opaque juice bombs from other states in a blind faceoff-matchup-tasting thing, because we’ve run out of original ideas. Despite our presumptuous hazy expertise, we are still shocked by a few of the results. Beyond that, we talk about around-the-house jeans, beard tips, prospective beer names, Rummikub, and papayneapples. Now I just kind of want some Jamba Juice. Beers Tasted Blindly (in order tasted) Old Nation Brewing - M-43 (IPA) Forbidden Root - Night Moth (IPA w/ oak spirals) Mikerphone Brewing - Super Special Sauce (DIPA) Weldwerks Brewing - Extra Extra Juicy Bits (DIPA) Tree House Brewing - Doppelgänger (DIPA) Corridor Brewery & Provisions - SqueezIt (DIPA)

This episode is sponsored by our friends at https://www.swolecatholic.com/ (Swole.Catholic)! About our man drink: East Coast Transplant is a throwback to our roots and a celebration of our migration to Colorado. We abide by the saying “I'm not a native, but I got here as fast as I could”, and we bring with us some brewing culture that we are excited to share. The beer is styled after some of the famous DIPAs of the northeast U.S., it's absurdly hoppy, hazy as hell and incredibly smooth to drink. Complex and pungent notes of peach dominate the nose, while juicy tropical fruit, full bodied mouthfeel and subtle sweetness round out the flavor. Ignoring the fact that there are plenty of beers out there that relegate hops to a simple supporting ingredient, we again indulge our insatiable appetites for chronic hop-led tonics by tasting out five super fresh local IPAs and DIPAs. Are we getting too old for this sh*t? Not likely! We do have a hell of a time trying to find critical points that separate these all-hazy all-juicy hop cocktails before they disappear from our glasses. And because our usually-rich lexicon of descriptors (ha!) is limited to a few keywords again and again, we bring back the fan-favorite episode-spanning game Beers Against Humanity to force us to shoehorn dirty and terrible phrases into our normally pristine and knowledgeable beer analysis (HA!) Give in to your temptations, and let the hops take over. (And tell ‘em Bruce Candles sent you.) Beers Reviewed Forbidden Root - Radio Swan (Rye IPA) Hop Butcher for the World - Skrap Metal (DIPA) Pipeworks/Run the Jewels/Interboro - Stay G-O-L-D (IPA) More Brewing - Loose Candies (DIPA) Corridor Brewery & Provisions - SqueezeIt OG (DIPA)
In our 16th podcast, we return to Cloudwater Brew Co. to talk again with the co-founder Paul Jones. We talk about the DIPAs going monthly, will we ever see Cloudwater in Tesco, getting advice from bigger breweries, trying to keep beer cold from the brewery to your home, macro buyouts of micros, selling direct from the brewery, the Pilcrow Pub, the festive range of beers they have coming out, what 2017 will bring & more. With Cloudwater being very busy with collaborations we ask wether the collab bubble may ever burst, how he likes to do them, what the foraging is like in the industrial park around the brewery & what Paul has learned from working with breweries around the world. http://cloudwaterbrew.co/ https://twitter.com/cloudwaterbrew ------------------ Available for free download.
