Does shame run your life? Jen Pastiloff is the best-selling author of On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard. For years, Jen stuffed down shame around her body, her hearing loss, her depression and anxiety. When she stopped denying her challenges, something wonderful happened. Folks responded to her authenticity. Nowadays, Jen's real. Like unapologetically real. You'll find her on Instagram creating art and doing compassionate acts for other humans – sometimes with spinach in her teeth, and in the same yoga clothes she's worn for days. She refuses to be shackled by shame. And she'll show you how to free yourself too. You'll learn some of the rituals she teaches in her popular workshops, including her morning prayer, and how you can let yourself off the hook before bed, “in case you ended up being a dick today.” Inspiring and radically practical. Hit play and grab your cuppa.   Jen Pastiloff on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jenpastiloff/ Her website: https://jenniferpastiloff.com

Jen Pastiloff, author of On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real and Listening Hard, tells the incredible story of her journey. She believed she was a bad person from the time she was a child and lived with depression and anxiety while slowly losing her hearing. She kept this secret until a moment of awakening that set her on a profoundly different, more open, accepting and joyful path as a writer, teacher and leader. Jen speaks with honesty and clarity about the often rocky road to becoming human. When people ask Jen what she does, how does she like to reply? What has Jen discovered about being human? Jen was close to her Dad. He died when she was 8, what does Jen recall about that day? Jen knew she had a problem but didn't want to let it go. Why? How do we get beyond that facade of "Oh, I'm fine" when we are not? What it feels like to be understood when someone gets you? How did it feel when Jen could say, I can't hear you? Did that help with her shame? Treat everyone with compassion because you don't know How did Jen wait on tables when she could not hear? How Jen learnt to listen What identity did Jen take on as a waitress? How did she see herself in that job? While waiting tables, Jen stopped writing and stopped creating; she felt dead inside. Is this common? Is part of Jen's identity today being an artist? Watching her friend who plays in Snow Patrol is a form of yoga for Jen. Why? Why was Jen so good at teaching yoga? How do we ensure someone feels safe? 5 Post-It note exercises Jen grew up in a land of lack. What's the impact that has on mindset? Why is PINK, a fan of Jen's work?   LINKS   Jen Pastiloff https://www.jenniferpastiloff.com   Top 10 Cowbell songs of all time https://ultimateclassicrock.com/cowbell-songs/   The Mojo Radio Show http://www.themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/themojoradioshowpodcast   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. First Draft Episode #227: Courtenay Hameister Courtenay Hameister, debut author of memoir Okay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went From Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things, and former host, co-producer and head writer of Live Wire Radio. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Books by Beverly Cleary (author of Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Beezus and Ramona, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle) and and Judy Blume (author of Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, Forever, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing) and The Crystal Cave series by Mary Stewart were some of Courtenay’s favorites growing up Create More, Fear Less is an organization in Portland Courtenay volunteers with that works with anxious kids While Courtenay went to New York University, she had the chance to work with legendary comedy group The State. The State — made up of Kevin Allison, Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Garant, Todd Holoubek, Michael Patrick Jann, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Michael Showalter, and David Wain — was formed in 1998 and had a self-titled comedy sketch show on MTV from 1992-1995. You can learn more about the history of the group in The Union of the State by Corey Stulce. Members of The State went on to create Reno 911, which is coming back! “The 7,000 Dollar Pyramid,” is one of The State’s sketches that Courtenay remembers Robert Ben Garant writing Writing Movies For Fun and Profit: How We Made a Billion Dollars at the Box Office, and You Can, Too! by former State members and co-writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant The Joan Didion quote Courtenay paraphrases is, “I don't know what I think until I write it down.” Some of Courtenay’s favorite guests from her many years of hosting Live Wire include: comedian, storyteller, director and actor Mike Birbiglia, who is best known for Sleepwalk With Me, which was also a comedy special and a New York Times bestselling book, Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories, and his new comedy special, The New One is also going to be a book, coming out in May 20202, The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad; Carrie Brownstein, guitarist with Sleater-Kinney (who have a new CD in 2019, The Center Won’t Hold), co-creator and writer of TV show Portlandia, and author of memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl; director Todd Haynes (who has directed Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, and this year’s Dark Waters; Cheryl Strayed, author of Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life From Dear Sugar and memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail; and David Rakoff, humorist and author of Fraud: Essays, Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never- Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems Courtenay’s friend Daniel H. Jean Garnett at Little, Brown was Courtenay’s editor Courtenay super recommends Sleepwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer (and, oh my god, would you look at that, he also has a TED talk!) The Oprah and James Frey controversy which exploded over his memoir, A Million Little Pieces, is an inevitable reference point for a conversation about what “truth” means in the memoir category Courtenay’s recommendation for David Carr’s memoir, Night of the Gun: A Reporter Investigates the Darkest Story of His Life. His Own, was so persuasive that I bought the audiobook that night! I admit to being a complete comedy nerd, and having recently mightily enjoyed John Hodgman’s collection of personal essays, Medallion Status: True Stories From Secret Rooms. Jennifer Pastiloff (author of On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard) and Lidia Yuknavitch (author of memoir The Chronology of Water and Verge: Stories, out Feb. 4, 2020!) teach a class called “Writing and the Body” that incorporates yoga and writing to enrich personal stories. Especially significant to her was his honesty in the memoir Navel Gazing: True Stories of Bodies, Mostly Mine (But Also My Mom’s, Which I Know Sounds Weird). His newest book, A Better Man, tackles toxic masculinity in the form of letters to his son as he goes off to college. I have always dreamt of being able to link to an article about Jeff Bezos’s dick pics (just kidding but here we go): this incident was wild - The National Enquirer allegedly tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos, threatening to release intimate pictures of him unless he paid up. Instead, Bezos released the pics himself and told them to screw off. It was wild. It was great. That incident calls to mind So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This,” the Modern Love essay by Mandy Len Catron, references Dr. Arthur Aron’s study, which included 36 questions to generate intimacy. (And hey, look at that, Mandy has TED talks about love stories, too!) I want to hear from you! Have a question about writing or creativity for Sarah Enni or her guests to answer? On this month’s theme of adventure, we’ll be taking a look at lifestyles! Specifically, following your intuition — you know, that little voice inside your head telling you what you probably should do, but you don’t entirely know whether to trust it or not. It’s important to remember that adventure can mean traveling and going on these incredible trips… but it also can happen between your own two ears.   Our guest today (and good friend), Jennifer Pastiloff, has definitely followed this little voice of hers! She travels the world, guiding people through her unique hybrid of yoga-related movement, helping them manifest their dreams and embrace their imperfections! When she’s not traveling the world, she’s spending time with her husband and son, in their home in Los Angeles. She has also started a really cool Instagram called, @NoBullshitMotherhood, all about raw parenting and the honest-to-god sh*t show it can sometimes be. And her recently published book, On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard, shares the story of her life and how she grew into the exuberant woman she was meant to be all along by battling the demons within and winning.   Today you’re in for a real treat with Jennifer! We talk about so many different aspects — from pain and shadows to growth and change. The many turns in her life have been incredibly unexpected, but also incredibly profound and valuable. She shares about all that life has thrown at her, how she has adapted to the unexpected, how her career has developed and unfolded, and how to pay attention to the good sh*t and appreciate your wins.   In this conversation, we love how she paralleled the way that we are vulnerable in our relationship with how she is vulnerable in her own struggles with her anxiety, depression, and hearing loss. We hope you listen to today’s episode and ask yourself the same questions she asked herself in her biggest times of growth: In what ways are you blocking yourself from opportunity and growth? And what are the things that can actually make you really happy even if they don’t fit the regular script that society hands us?   Topics Discussed: [:35] About today’s episode with our good friend, Jennifer Pastiloff. [:58] Sharing our review of the week! [1:59] Sophie shares a topical quote on this topic. [5:00] More about today’s guest, Jennifer Pastiloff. [8:35] What adventure is — especially in today’s episode. [10:52] Sophie shares another quote that reminds us of Jennifer. [12:40] Today’s conversation of the podcast. [14:14] Jennifer talks about her first unexpected moment: having a child later in life. [18:00] Jennifer speaks about her journey to getting to the point where she was building her career at 35. [21:20] Before finding her career, Jennifer reflects on the programming that prevented her from changing her life. [27:57] What Jennifer discovered when she became a yoga teacher. [30:40] When did Jennifer begin to take yoga beyond the asana practice into ‘manifestation yoga’? [38:00] Jennifer’s experience with having a child later in life. [44:09] The importance of flexibility in your life and adventures! [50:46] How Jennifer is similarly aligned with our mission of radical transparency. [52:42] Why we’re all kind of assholes sometimes! [56:37] Pay attention to the good sh*t and appreciate your wins. [59:04] What has been Jennifer’s proudest moment? [1:02:57] What has been the best advice Jennifer has ever received? [1:03:30] What has been one of Jennifer’s most difficult moments to-date? [1:05:11] When Jennifer is anxious or depressed, what self-care tools does she use? [1:09:07] What ignites Jennifer?   Mentioned in this Episode: Jennifer Pastiloff @NoBullshitMotherhood on Instagram “I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over.
