Using Data to Make the World Better with Andrea Jones-Rooy

Dr. Dan interviews Andrea Jones-Rooy – data scientist, educator, podcast host, comedian, and circus performer – about how data informs our journeys to being our best selves. Based on her life of weaving in between the worlds of science and art, Andrea believes that it's at the intersection of science and art that we can make the biggest, most life-changing, and world-changing discoveries. Andrea's multi-hyphenate careers (she is equally comfortable entertaining at comedy clubs, speaking to Fortune 500 companies, and sitting behind the podcast mic) prove data is the foundation of how we live, how we make decisions, and how we can make the world a better place. Dr. Dan and Andrea define data and then discuss the data related to our current moment in history. They explore why democratizing data science empowers everyone—not just statisticians—to make sense of the numbers shaping our world. From political polarization to public health to how we read headlines, Dr. Dan and Andrea tell us how we can all use data for good.   Andrea Jones-Rooy hosts the podcast Behind The Data where she discusses how data is actually collected, its limitations, and offers advice on how to factor it into decision-making. Andrea believes there's no such thing as being just a “math person” or a “creative” – she insists we're all capable of brilliance in both. “It's all about finding the right way to unlock those skills and discovering what we're truly capable of.”  Listeners will learn from, laugh, and love today's discussion - even if they hate math!  For more information www.jonesrooy.com and follow @jonesrooy on Instagram. Dr. Dan interviews husband-and-wife team Jean Linscott, Ph.D. and Kenneth Ruoff, Ph.D.about their new book What is the Goal?: The Truth About the Youth Sports Industry. With Dr. Dan, Dr. Ken and Dr. Jean explore how the current youth sports industry, pay-to-play sports, and the quest for prestige can cause unintended harm to young athletes and their families.  This episode explores how children and parents can both experience the pressures of belonging to a sports team along with feeling the need to have a "return on investment" and how this can lead to resentment, poor mental health, and injuries that can stop a career before it even starts.  Dr. Dan, Dr. Jean, and Dr. Ken also ask: since sports can be a ticket into prestigious schools are the benefits worth the risks?  Kenneth Ruoff, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Portland State University and the author of several award-winning books. From the perspective of a historian, he is astonished, in comparison to what he experienced as a kid, at how drastically different a youth-sports environment his family has faced these past two decades. He was a member of  the 1987 Harvard College Men's Soccer Final Four team.  Jean Linscott, Ph.D., is a clinical child psychologist. She has been working professionally with children and families for over thirty years in hospital-based, clinic, and private-practice settings.  She and Kenneth Ruoff are the parents of three athletes who are veterans of the Youth Sports Industry. Dr. Dan interviews Elizabeth Brunner, the Founder and CEO of StereoType, a disruptive kids' fashion brand that aims to break free from traditional gendered clothing by creating what she coined as "blended fashion" — a mix of girl and boy esthetics that are equal in value and defined by no one.  On this episode, Dr. Dan and Elizabeth discuss why parents need to give their kids space to be themselves, gender-free fashion, conscious parenting and more. Elizabeth was inspired to start StereoType after often watching her young twins joyfully break the rules of traditional dressing by wearing pieces from each others' closets to create their own unique blended fashion style that authentically represented who they are and how they wanted to dress. StereoType offers a wide range of gender-free clothing and accessories for children ages 4-14, enabling them to express themselves through their wardrobe choices without being limited by societal expectations, limits, and stereotypes. StereoType is the second disruptive fashion company Elizabeth has started. After studying fashion design at California College of the Arts, she found herself at odds with wasteful fashion industry standards. This led her to launch her first fashion business Piece x Piece, a pioneering line of one-of-a-kind, high-end garments that reused discarded sample swatches and leftover fabric from larger fashion houses that would typically be sent to landfill.   For more information visit www.stereotypekids.com.
