Our world is starved of people showing up as their true selves - with our awkwardness, playfulness and realness front and center. The fear of being too much, too loud and too messy drives a lot of people to shrink themselves, and walk around with an injured essence. A powerful catalyst for realness is being in the presence of people who welcome all aspects of themselves, and live who they are out loud. This doesn't just help us undo and unlearn the messaging that diminishes us. By osmosis, it allows who we truly are to surface effortlessly. How do you invite your weirdest self to the table? What does embracing yourself completely feel like? In this episode, we're excited to be joined by our very first guest - author, speaker and coach, Jennifer Pastilof. We have a delicious conversation about discovery, wonder and how to stop hiding ourselves in shame. Surround yourself with people you want to be like, not people you want to be. -Jennifer Pastiloff Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode -You've got everyone, but remember to also have you When we set the intention to serve others, how do we make sure we're not leaving ourselves behind? -Allowing vs. being allowed What's the difference between being allowed by others, and allowing ourselves? -How to find your place of authenticity Who we spend time with allows us to be our true selves, how do we find those people who pull out what makes us special? Guest Bio Jennifer Pastiloff travels the world with her unique workshop “On Being Human,” a hybrid of yoga related movement, writing, sharing out loud, letting the snot fly, and the occasional dance party. Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, calls Jen “a conduit of awakenings.” Jen has been featured on Good Morning America, New York Magazine, Health Magazine, CBS News and more for her unique style of teaching, which she has taught to thousands of women in sold-out workshops all over the world. Navigating the Culture of Chronic Pain with Francesca GrossmanAired Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM PST / 2:00 PM ESTFor over 20 years, author Francesca Grossman, author of NOT Weakness: Navigating the Culture of Chronic Pain, felt stuck in the centrifuge of her own pain. After all that time of living this way, she started to wonder: where were all the other people who lived like I did? Why didn't I know them? Why didn't I share my story? She started asking women in her community if they had chronic pain―only to find that I was surrounded by women also battling in silence. The more I spoke to people, the more she found common themes and experience—feeling silenced, experiencing humiliation and shame, struggling in relationships and work—proving that my stories of pain were not unique, and neither were her feelings of loneliness and seclusion.About the Guest:Francesca Grossman is a writer and writing instructor. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Brain, Child Magazine, The Manifest Station, Ed Week, Drunken Boat, and Word Riot, among others. She runs writing retreats and workshops internationally and leads an annual intensive workshop at The Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has a BA and MA from Stanford University and a doctorate from Harvard University in education. Her acclaimed instructional manual Writing Workshop; How to Create a Culture of Useful Feedback is used in universities and workshops all over the world. The holidays are a time for connecting with family and counting our blessings but this can also be a challenging time of year for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Heidi talks with Becky A. Benson about the loss of her daughter and how she is using her own personal experience to help others who are grieving. In this episode, we discuss: How to support: Grief doesn't need a hero it just needs a friend. Understanding some situations can't be ‘fixed'. There is power in simply being with someone else. Your silent presence is worth much more than empty words. Bearing witness to someone's struggle is doing heart work, and heart work can be hard work. What Not to Say: Refrain from platitudes (they are in a better place, at least they are not suffering anymore) and distance-seeking words (I can not imagine) and offer acknowledgment of the weight of the situation to validate their feelings. Connection as Time Passes Grief does not follow a prescribed timeline for anyone. Grief that is Healthy and Grief that is Not: Loss of sense of self, heightened emotions, memory issues (and much more) are all perfectly normal in grief. As time moves on if these things seem not to be lessening or you find yourself being further removed from society, including family and friends, you may be stuck in your grief, and not processing. About Becky: Becky A Benson's work has appeared on Modern Loss, Modern Mom, The Manifest Station, Scary Mommy, Grief Narratives, Months to Years Lit Mag and has been syndicated on both Salon and Brain Child. She has written and spoken for the Center for Jewish Genetics in Chicago, and Soulumination in Seattle, and appeared on podcasts, webinars, and television. She holds a degree in psychology and works for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association as the organization's Family Services Manager. Her passion is for helping families endure the loss of a child, spreading awareness for genetic conditions, advocating for adoption, and providing a voice to the marginalized in society. These things, above all else, continue to intimately shape her writing. It's an embodiment of the good Greek word catharsis — releasing both insight and emotions that have had no place to go, and creating an energizing relief. Moving Away from Fear Toward an Authentic Life with Jen Pastiloff We should never forget who we are and what we want, even with adversity in our lives. Our purpose and identity are what keep us going. No matter what society tells us about how and who we should be, living an authentic life will bring satisfaction and happiness in our lives. It's time to reflect and ask ourselves if we are living the life we’ve always wanted. And if we find ourselves saying no, may we have the courage to start again and build the life we desire. In this episode, Jen Pastiloff talks to us about the importance of living a life congruent with our true selves and moving away from fear. Discussions on how to prevent ourselves from being paralyzed from fear are essential as we continue to live through a global pandemic and civil unrest. She also talks about how she's helping amplify the voices of the vulnerable sectors of society and why she doesn't believe that everything happens for a reason. If you want to hear tips on how to live an authentic life that’s congruent with who you are, listen to the full episode. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover why you need to live a life congruent with your authentic self. Learn helpful ways to move away from fear. Jen will share with us how she feels radically loved. Enter your email below and I’ll send it right away! Episode Highlights Living a Congruent Life Just like everybody else, Jen still struggles with living true to who she is. Living an authentic life gives you freedom. Just like how gossiping and complaining don't make you feel good and lower your vibration, not living a life congruent with your real self will not bring you happiness. Coping During the COVID-19 Pandemic Due to the pandemic's impacts, Jen had to cancel a lot of her schedule, which prevented her from earning. To cope with the stress, she chose to use her platform to raise money for people suffering from the ongoing health crisis and the Black Lives Matter movement. Doing online workshops also gives her hope during this challenging period. Moving Away from Fear Jen copes with her anxieties by moving her body. Find your people who will hold you accountable and remind you of who you really are. Fear starts to get louder when you're at home all day long. Due to the current state of the world, many people lack human connection, and it adds to the fear they're having. Jen finds the strength within her to jump on new things even though she feels afraid. Jen’s Main Anchor in Life Jen inherited her dad's sense of humor. Learning humor’s value and not taking herself too seriously helped her find balance in her life. Everything is temporary. So Jen encourages everyone to remain grateful for the things they have right now. Her ability to connect with people is also one thing that keeps her on the right path. Does Everything Happen for a Reason? Instead of saying everything happens for a reason, according to Jen, it's much better to find the meaning out of a situation. She doesn't agree that the suffering of other people is something preordained. The phrase “everything happens for a reason” is just a way for people to cope with the discomfort they feel about something. That said, Jen does not invalidate how the phrase provides comfort to religious people or people of faith. Using Her Platform for Social Justice Jen reminds everyone that it doesn't cost anything to be kind and help other people. Helping others feels organic to her. Jen is aware of her privilege as a white woman. So she makes sure she uses her platform to amplify the voices of the people who don't share the same privilege. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [07:11] “All I ever want to be is free, and kind, and various other things, but free, ultimately, from the prison that most of us put ourselves in.” [08:18] “May I have the courage to be who I say I am.” [22:27] “I know what I'm good at. I'm good at being in a room with 75 or a hundred people in person. But I don't know how this was gonna work. I'm afraid, and I'm doing it anyway.” [23:40] “If it becomes a lifetime of being afraid and not doing it, then you get kind of screwed.” [30:27] “I don't think everything happens for a reason at all. I think that's nonsense. I think that after something happens, we can make meaning out of it sometimes, or art, or find the gift in it.” About Jen Jen Pastiloff is a yoga and wellness teacher and author. Her sold-out workshops all over the world have helped thousands of women feel empowered and stronger. She also founded the online magazine The Manifest-Station. Long ago (a couple of months ago) in a galaxy far, far away (okay it was actually Earth), we announced our plans to launch a podcast focused on grief and mental health called Good Grief, We're All Mental. Since then, we've been busy behind the scenes brainstorming, planning, mapping out ideas/episodes/guests...and here we are -- finally -- with (drum roll please): Episode 1! Good Grief, We're All Mental (also known as GGWAM) was born out of host Julia Morin's life experiences and passion for mental health, grief, and ending the stigma surrounding both of these deeply personal, difficult life experiences. Co-host Angela Cirrone decided to come along for the ride and share her own experiences, stories and perspective. The goal of the podcast is to normalize, humanize and destigmatize grief and mental health. More than anything, we hope to provide a platform for sharing some very important stories related to grief and mental health, and build a supportive, safe, compassionate community. Thank you for coming on this journey with us. -Julia & Angela Episode Notes In this episode, Julia mentions an essay she wrote and had published about her past struggles with depression and anxiety. She is currently writing a memoir about the challenges of being a witch author and the sustaining power of sacred sisterhood. She has also spent 20 years researching novel that explores terrapsychology through the lives of three women living beside the same river over the span of 250 years, inspired by her matriarchal family Ranchero history and the nana she never knew. Jamie says of her work, “My writing focuses on earth-based spirituality as a tool and a lifestyle. I have written about connecting to the plant world for physical and spiritual medicine. Maintaining a deep connection with the natural rhythms reinforces my faith in the mystery, infallible lovability, original innocence, and our divine power to co-create in the world. I enjoy exploring female relationships and characters who must call upon their inborn courage and strength to fight social injustice, prejudice, tyrannical relationships, and/or personal demons and limitations. I am interested in the hidden figures of our collective past who have held family and community together while they fought for creative expression, individuality, dignity, and equality. I came of age as a proud Mexican woman during the Feminist Movement, and this has colored the way I see the world. It has taken me a long time to understand that woman’s soft power is not weak.”

Jennifer Pastiloff spent the first part of her life thinking she was a bad person because of something she told her father before he died when she was just eight. She moved in and out of depression and tried to control what happened in her life with her eating. At the same time, without letting anyone know, she was also losing her hearing. Through her yoga practice and writing she began to face these challenges, redefine her own life and explore what it means to be human. She shared her experiences in a real and vulnerable way publicly on Facebook and in her online magazine The Manifest Station. She began teaching and leading retreats called On Being Human. And she has written a book, also called, On Being Human in which she shares her own triumphantly messy story. In this interview, we talk about: - How to quiet our Inner Asshole - What are the bullshit stories we tell ourselves and how we rewrite them - How our bodies carry our stories - What is listening hard - How we let go of what no longer serves us so we can be where we actually want to be
when jen was eight her father died. the last words she said to him were “I hate you.” those words would haunt her well into adulthood as she found herself dropping out of NYU as an english major, working as a waitress for 14 years while “pursuing” acting and dead-end relationships, and falling deeper into depression.the day she began taking anti-depressants was the day she began finding her way home.she became a yoga teacher and started writing what was true. sharing all of what it means to be human: the messy, the hard, the beautiful, the magical. no shame. no apologies. just “real fucking life.”today jen is the national bestselling author of "On Being Human: a memoir of waking up, living real, and listening hard." she leads sold-out yoga-related movement and writing retreats around the world, and is the founder of the online magazine The Manifest-Station. jen has been featured on Good Morning America, New York magazine, Health magazine, CBS news, and more. she has a massive online following and is loved the world over for her raw and real telling of what it means to be human.some things we talk about:how jen rebuilt her entire life from depressed and unhappy to wildly successful and happier (most of the time) how much to share, how to bear witness, and how to just be on making the thing that is true to you and designing a life, and business, around who you are on busting through shame, giving yourself a fucking medal, and being free

When was the last time you experienced grief, pain, or loss? It’s our cultural instinct to brush those feelings off, to sweep them under the rug, and try to move past them as quickly as possible. Today, Megan Devine, a Pacific Northwest writer, speaker, and grief advocate, is here to remind you that personal tragedy’s going to happen (it’s inevitable), but she’s also going to reassure you that in those darkest times of your life — it WILL be okay. As Megan puts it, “it’s okay that you’re not okay.” Megan’s on a mission to help people love each other better. As the founder of Refuge in Grief, a hub of grief education and outreach, Megan leads people through some of the most devastating times in their lives. Together, with her team, she facilitates a growing catalogue of courses, events, and trainings to help grieving people — as well as help those who wish to support them — to learn the skills they need to carry pain that cannot be fixed. Megan’s newest book, It’s OK That You’re Not OK: Meeting Grief & Loss in a Culture That Doesn’t Understand. She’s been featured wildly in the media including Huffington Post, Modern Loss, and the Manifest-Station, and in dozens of podcasts and radio appearances. Dive into the conversation that surrounds grief, pain, and loss to discover how much more healing the entire process can actually be. Key Takeaways: Healing through well intentions. You’re going through your life and the unimaginable happens. It could be a close death, a job loss, or a health diagnosis, but suddenly your world’s turned upside down. Your support system will instinctually try to relate or do whatever they can to help you move past this, but THIS is what you’ll actually need…[09:25]. Embracing the conversation. Talking about grief can make us uncomfortable. The truth is we all walk around with a backlog of unspoken or unheard pain that we’re afraid to reveal; but why? The TRUTH behind our silence and what we’re really so damn afraid of…[16:26]. Finding your safe ground. When you’re met with tragedy you want to be comforted knowing there’s a safety net; a person or group of supportive people who will help you heal. It’s not about reducing the harm, but to feel safe. How can you build that community before needing them? Try this…[19:55]. Carrying the loss. When things go wrong, we want to fix them. It’s in our nature to try. But the next time your loved one calls you distressed and grieving, it’s incredibly important to remember Megan’s sound advice – things cannot be fixed, they can only be carried. Learn what this ONE saying means and be better prepared to face it all…[30:47]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.

Happy Valentine's Day. Put down the box of Russell Stover candies and listen up. It's time to talk about death. There's no better way to celebrate love than to honor the fact that we eventually lose the ones we love. Or do we? On the Block Radio is a show about transformation. More specifically, we are a show about how people face intense experiences in their lives and transform them into meaning, beauty and purpose. There is no bigger transformation than that of death. To confront our own deaths, the sages of every religion teach, is the key to unlocking the eternal aspects within our consciousness and our bodies. There are few more basic human issues than the ever-ticking clock of our own mortality. It is what makes life tragic and glorious at the same time. And to help someone prepare for a beautiful death is to help a person fulfill their deepest potential as a human being. There is literally no higher calling. This is the calling Mellisa Dodson heard, and answered, on March 25, 2014. Melissa Dodson is a California girl who found her home in the trees of Portland, OR. She's a wife and mom, a writer and a Death Midwife. She writes about being a motherless daughter, grief, depression, vulnerability and the beauty of a messy life. She is a dream catcher, a grief warrior, a survivor, a book whore. Studying writing with Lidia Yuknavitch woke up all the broken pieces of her heart, and reminded her that words save. She now studies Dangerous Writing under the tutelage of Tom Spanbauer and the magic makers in the basement. Her work has been featured on The Manifest-Station, Rebelle Society, The Tattooed Buddha, behind-the-ink, Some Talk of You & Me, Breathe In. Breathe Out. Live, among other online publications. Since the March 25, 2014 death of her mother, her passions lie with grief, compassionate end-of-life planning, conscious death and dying, home death/home vigil/home funeral and natural/green burial. In 2015, she founded Grief Rites, a Facebook community to safely and openly talk about death and grief (website coming soon). She also curates the Grief Rites Readers Series, a literary event in NE Portland, to bring people together to hold sacred space for each other in their grief. The Readers Series meets the first Monday of each month at American Legion Post 134, and is free to all. Her next chapter includes turning Grief Rites into a 501c(3) non-profit organization. Funds raised through the Grief Rites Foundation will take the Readers Series on the road to broaden the reach of the grief safety net that she's created, and bring in renowned speakers and authors in the realm of death and grief. Additionally, there will be a fund to assist people with covering funeral and burial costs for green/natural burials. She is also continually studying, and offering her services though her Portland based business, Into the Light, LLC. Her offerings include compassionate end-of-life planning and education, death midwifery services, home funeral guidance, caregiver support and grief support.
