‘The Help' by Kathryn Stockett. ‘Big Little Lies' by Liane Moriarty. ‘Let's Pretend This Never Happened' by Jenny Lawson. ‘American Dirt' by Jeanine Cummins. ‘This Is How It Always Is' by Laurie Frankel. ‘Listen for the Lie' by Amy Tintera. ‘We Begin At the End' by Chris Whittaker. ‘A Higher Loyalty' by James Comey. ‘The Book of Awesome' by Neil Pasricha.     What do these books have in common? The famed but invisible editor pulling the strings from behind the curtain: Amy Einhorn     Fifteen years ago my seven-month-old blog ‘1000 Awesome Things' was nominated for ‘Best Blog' from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. I was approached by literary agents and my new agent Erin Malone told me she wanted to auction my blog to publishers … next week. Suddenly I was in the foreign position of interviewing editors who were somehow clamoring to publish my book.     I signed with Amy Einhorn—a woman I'd never heard of, who had just started an eponymous imprint I'd never heard of, within Putnam Publishing, which I'd also never heard of. But I was immediately and magnetically attracted to her vision for the book. “It's a hardcover, Neil,” she said. “It's for moms. It's a gift book. You gotta lose the frat boy posts. No blowing your nose in the shower. And I need a lot more new content.”     I learned everything about editing from Amy in our passionate late night diatribe emails, our hot-potato-ing of 300-page Word docs back and forth with 100s of comments in red down the sides, and arguing—good arguing!—about every single element along the way. I'd sit in her office and she'd have a variety of ‘cases' laid out on her desk. “What do you think of 5” by 7”?” she'd say. “Too precious? Too cute?”     Amy is one of the most successful editors in the world today with the highest percentage of books edited hitting the New York Times bestseller list. According to a feature in The Observer, “New York editors and publishers speak of Amy Einhorn's success as the product of an almost mystical editorial instinct.” She has a knack for sniffing out voice, for knowing what will work and what won't and, as you can imagine, I've been begging her to come on 3 Books for six years to hear how it all works.     So I flew down to NYC to talk with the bright, brilliant, and beaming Amy Einhorn about what an editor does, how a book gets published, what helps a book sell, Amy's 3 most formative books, and much, much more.     Let's flip the page to Chapter 140 now…

Happy Mother's Day, Sisters! We hope it will be a joyful one for you and your families. As we know well, our relationships with our moms can run the emotional gamut over the lifespan. We also know that some moms are made for mothering (or work really hard at it!), while some simply fall short because of circumstances they can't (or don't know how to) control.  In Liz Scheier's beautiful, honest memoir, Never Simple, she describes her difficult and complex relationship with her mother, Judith. As a result of Judith's borderline personality disorder (BPD), Liz's childhood was fraught with chaos and volatility. When Liz was 18 years old, her mother dropped two bombshells. One, that her mom had been married for most of the previous two decades to a man Liz had never heard of. And second, that everything she had told Liz about the man she'd claimed was Liz's dead father was entirely fictional. Never Simple is Liz's story about what happened next. We loved our illuminating and intimate conversation with Liz -- and you will, too. Never Simple has garnered praise from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly (starred review), Kirkus, Library Journal, Bookpage, Booklist, and bestselling authors Augusten Burroughs, Jenny Lawson, Isaac Mizrahi, Elissa Altman, Greer Hendricks, and Mira Bartók. It was chosen as a Best Book of March by Amazon and Apple Books, a People Picks by People Magazine, an Indie Next pick, a Barnes & Noble Top 10 Favorite Ebook of 2022, and was featured as one of “15 March Reads to Get You Through the Month” on Good Morning America. Today's interview is with Jenny Lawson, the president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful, a leading national nonprofit that inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful provides the expertise, programs, and resources to help people end littering, improve recycling, beautify America's public spaces, and restore and support resilient communities.   Before joining Keep America Beautiful, Jenny was the Chief Civic Innovation Officer at Points of Light where she led forward thinking initiatives, partnerships, and campaigns to advance the mission of Points of Light around the world. She designed, led, and championed programs and research to aid companies in achieving their social change goals through the actions of their employees, including the Corporate Service, Council of Leading Brands, the Civic 50, Ranking of Community Minded Companies, and a newly developed digital community, the Community for Employee Civic Engagement.  So needless to say, I think Jenny has a lot of expertise on how nonprofits can work with companies and communities to advance social change, which is a topic that I know all of us are interested in, particularly those of us who are part of the Charity Miles Employee Empowerment Program.  One of those companies is AT&T which is supporting Keep America Beautiful now through our Employee Empowerment Program, and connected us with Jenny for this interview.   I met Jenny in a park up in Connecticut, and we recorded this as a live walking webinar with our members and AT&T's employees.  It was a bit rainy, but that didn't seem to faze Jenny one bit. Today's episode is for writers who aren't really sure what their memoir is supposed to do. They know they want to write their stories, but that's as far as they've got. Or maybe they dived head-first into writing and now feel lost—and they don't know way. Today's episode will help you figure out exactly where you're losing the thread and what you need to do to get back on track. I mention the memoirist Jenny Lawson (she's equal parts dark and funny). It's open books all the way with these two TMI queens and their no-holds-barred, hilarious ways. They're the perfect duo to break my 6-month hiatus from the show. What a hoot to be back with three-time New York Times best-selling memoirist Jenny Lawson (Broken, Furiously Happy, and Let's Pretend This Never Happened) and her blogtastic comedic twin, Laura Belgray, joining us here while on book tour for her debut memoir, the national bestseller, Tough Titties: On Living Your Best Life when You're the F-ing Worst.Y'all, this one's a mood booster! And a total love match, as you'll see. If you're in the mood to laugh and shake off the funk from your Doomscrolling, this is the show for you. This may be Laura's first book, but she's one of the most successful career writers I know, starting in TV writing for NBC, HBO, USA, Nick at Night, Nickelodeon, TV Land, VH1, and others. Let's just say the girl gets around. Her blog and newsletters at Talking Shrimp are wildly popular (addictive!), as are her programs, like Inbox Hero and The Copy Cure, Laura's creation with Marie Forleo.Join us as we dig into wisdom on crafting headlines, run-on sentences that hypnotize, avoiding husbands as beta readers, and how having children is like living with an undercover agent tapping all your phones. We also dish on hiding during Zoom calls, editing drunk, getting mailed boxes of dildos in the mail (like you do), blowjobs Laura gave in the early 90s, titties that grow back after reduction surgery, and the ghost living under Jenny's house.I'm so happy you're here. Write on!PS. This convo was such a blast that I RAN back into the recording studio to cover a new topic here—Self-Publishing—with two clients who've made millions via self-publishing (which brought the big publishers to them). Summary: Add some Seoul to your day and join Holly and Devin in South Korea for today's Summer Jetset Series episode! While neither of them have made it to Korea yet, they have both fallen in love with the country, the culture, the vibrancy and K-Pop. They appreciate the country for its massive pop-cultural influence in both music with KPop, KDramas and K-beauty trends and fashion - it's exciting to see South Korea stepping more and more onto the global stage. Until you can book your tickets, come armchair travel with us!  Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:51): Devin discussed XOXO by Axie Oh, a delightful YA novel that follows cellist Jenny as she travels from her home in LA to Seoul and the Seoul Arts Academy for a semester to help her mother care for her ailing grandmother. Once there, Jenny realizes that the mysterious hunk she connected with one random night in LA is actually Jaewoo, star of an up-and-coming K-Pop group. Devin's key takeaways were: Whether you're a huge K-Pop fan or new to the scene, this book provides a fantastic overview of the K-Pop experience, both for the fandom and for the group members themselves. Oh executes with wonderful accuracy on the excitement and struggles of Jaewoo and his groupmates.  Unlike most Hallmark movies, XOXO doesn't involve Jenny giving up her own dreams and goals for the sake of Jaewoo; she continues to explore what her cello career and future studies mean to her and her growth is not exclusively driven by her romance; a refreshing and important perspective for all readers. The side characters of this novel are phenomenal, well-rounded, and provide a pop of color and texture to the main plotline of a forbidden love between Jenny and Jaewoo.  The Dagger (16:47): Holly discussed The Plotters by Un-Su Kim, a contemporary novel that delves into the secretive world of assassins. The reader follows Reseng, a contract killer who was raised by the head of an underground organization, Old Racoon. The tensions between old guard leaders like Old Racoon and new blood portrayed by Hanja add layers of intrigue on top of an already compelling assassin story. Holly's key takeaways were: Don't judge a book by it's assassin plot! This novel is introspective and explores the theme of personal identity and the search for meaning in life. Reseng grapples with questions about his own identity as he begins to recognize that his life has been controlled by external forces who have been pulling the strings behind the scenes.  The Plotters raises ethical questions about the nature of killing and the moral implications of assassination while weaving in some seriously intense action scenes. As is the case with 21st-century Korean crime films, this novel relies heavily on sharp and pointy objects that get deadly - principally, knives and hatchets.  As we follow Renseng on his journey, Kim explores the complexities of loyalty and betrayal within his sphere of assassins and underground groups. It raises questions about trust, the nature of relationships, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their own interests.  Hot On the Shelf (33:13): Devin: The Fiancé Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur Holly: The Whispers by Ashley Audrain What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:42): Devin: The Nowhere Bookshop in San Antonio, TX (owned by Jenny Lawson!) Holly: Past Lives, a film in theaters!    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Jenny Lawson is a funny writer, but that label doesn't tell the whole story. In her three books, her "parenthetical ramblings" are hilarious glimpses into her razor sharp wit that keep you laughing long after you put the book down. At the same time, Jenny Lawson deals with deep depression that has her also writing about her struggles - sometimes just to stay alive. She writes of the “monster” that at times takes over her mind. Snake Bite! Jeremy's Story https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/dreams-about-snakes-interpretations Get excited listeners! This week's episode is a bit on the lighter side. Do you have an irrational fear? Amanda reveals that she has an insane fear of snakes. At the start of the episode, she'll share a few examples of her crazy behaviors resulting from this fear. Cue Amanda knocking her baby sister over in an effort to flee a potential snake... that wasn't even there.    Given this fear, when Amanda discovered the story of a man who was bitten by the severed head of a rattlesnake.     In May of 2018, Jeremy Sutcliffe and his wife Jennifer were doing yardwork at their Texas home. Jennifer was working in a flowerbed and she reached down to pull out some grass growing around her flowers and she almost grabbed a four-foot-long Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. He reared up and she screamed. Jeremy grabbed a shovel and beheaded the snake.    About 10 minutes later, he bent down to dispose of the severed head, it reared up and bit him on the hand.    Apparently, rattlesnakes can attack for more than an hour after they've been beheaded. Their metabolisms are much slower than those of humans and their internal organs can stay alive for longer than ours. They become aggressive in the throes of death and fight in a last-ditch effort to survive.    By the time he was life-flighted to the hospital, Jeremy was going into septic shock. He survived a little worse for wear, but his story can serve as an important warning for others. However, experts say that people shouldn't attempt to kill rattlesnakes on their own.    Cynthia Vigil Jeramillo: AE Killing Season: The Toy Box Killer -- https://www.avnblogfeed.com/2021/12/07/the-killing-season-bonus-the-toy-box-killer-season-1-episode-7-ae/ Cynthia-vigil.com   Broken in the Best Possible Way by Jenny Lawson: https://www.amazon.com/Broken-best-possible-Jenny-Lawson/dp/1250812488/ref=asc_df_1250812488/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=532483928592&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5082960414213813934&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052441&hvtargid=pla-1390246080178&psc=1   This is what a sage grouse looks like: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Greater_Sage-Grouse/id   They do commonly attack humans: https://www.adirondackalmanack.com/2012/06/the-attack-of-the-ruffed-grouse.html     Follow us on social media:  facebook.com/stillhere.podcast.21/  instagram.com/stillhere_podcast/    Become a member on Patreon: patreon.com/stillherepod    Donate to our tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere    Produced by WayGood Creative and Rocketskates Recording: rocketskatesrecording.com   Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere   Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co   Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/stillhere/ba35e87b-71c0-4019-83da-b026f07e1b0b   This podcast is powered by Pinecast.     Sources: The Florida Times-Union: https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Reader's Digest: https://www.rd.com/article/the-snakes-revenge/   An article in the Washington Post by Allyson Chiu:  https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Channel 3 News in Texas: https://www.kiiitv.com/article/news/local/one-year-later-corpus-christi-man-still-recovering-after-being-bitten-by-severed-rattlesnake-head/503-ca8bbb5b-20b6-443d-baee-132aa1624ba5   lifescience.com https://www.livescience.com/62771-decapitated-rattlesnake-bites-man.html   dreammoods.com   mindbodydream.com Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/stillhere/617fbe68-815e-477a-a625-8306598980a6 This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

This week's guest is Paige Friend, creator of The Beach Speaks podcast and former corporate aviation industry professional. Paige grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania but always loved the beach. After an experience at a retreat in Italy with her favourite podcaster, returned from Italy and quit her job. It was time. We talk about releasing the attachment around what things are supposed to look like. As the story goes, Paige decided one day that she was going meet her soulmate, quit her 9 to 5 and move to the beach. Before life on the beach, Paige spent her career in corporate aviation. At first, she wanted to be a pilot and got her pilot's license when working for a small airport in Oklahoma. From there she ended up working in customer service in general aviation for 20 years. Paige demonstrates going with her instincts about what she wants to do and then goes for it without having to know exactly how that thing will manifest. Her podcast, “The Beach Speaks”, is a podcast for conscious people who love the beach and were inspired to create it after her morning practice of sitting on the beach. She has a voice that is perfect for this too. Paige is also a certified yoga teacher. It is as much a spiritual as physical experience for her. She talks about how everyone can do yoga. It is just for those that can bend into pretzel shapes! Her advice at the end on how to start to get to the thing you want to do is practical and you won't want to miss it. And, her most inspirational person in the Fun Five was truly one of the most heartwarming so far. Note from Rabiah (Host): Paige is peace. She really is. She is also someone I could have talked to for longer. Our conversation was easy and I was constantly getting shots of information throughout. She has followed her instincts and made changes to her life but in a way that is more positive than I have at times. It struck me she quit her job without resentment for example. She trusts herself. It was empowering to realise that maybe I could do this too. I hope that's what you get out of it. For example, we talk about her mindfulness practice and the way she puts it, it is really something anyone can do. We also went off on a taxidermy tangent for a minute which makes me laugh even as I write these notes! +++++ Find Paige Listen to The Beach Speaks: https://thebeachspeaks.buzzsprout.com/ or on your favorite Podcast Player Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebeachspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheBeachSpeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thebeachspeaks +++++ Mentioned in this episode: Rich Roll podcast: https://www.richroll.com/all-episodes/ Let's Pretend this Didn't Happen by Jenny Lawson: https://amzn.to/3LxGuqx Never Have Your Dog Stuffed by Alan Alda: https://amzn.to/3uPl4PP Field and Young Taxidermy: http://fieldandyoung.com/ SMA foundation: https://smafoundation.org/ Max Peda Fundraiser: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-max-climb-mountains Squadcast: https://squadcast.fm/?ref=rabiahcoon +++++ More than Work Facebook, Instagram, Twitter: @morethanworkpod Please review and follow anywhere you get podcasts. (links to helplines and a wonderful book I love in the description) Today's episode was hard for me to do. But if I am honest, it was also easier than I thought it would be. Admitting to having doubts, feeling like you don't belong, suffer from depression and anxiety is like walking into a room full of strangers naked. Until you realize that everyone else in that room is naked too, is dealing with the very same issues you are and that they are your tribe... As a society it has become acceptable to talk about famous people's intimate lives, discuss sexual orientation, give our opinions on other's people's lives... But opening up the discussion about mental health is Taboo? Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Veterans Crisis Line: 1-888-777-4443 Stop 22 Veteran Suicides a Day, NVF helps with Lifeline for Vets A Book I recommend for every one as an audio book read by the author with extra content not in the paper edition. Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson aka TheBlogess My goal, wish, sincere hope, is that by opening the discussion in this forum, by being honest about my struggles, others will feel encouraged to reach out to others who are struggling, that those who are feeling the things I feel, or have their own mental health issues, will be able to open the conversation with their family, friends and really get this topic into the mainstream. Let's talk about when you are not OK. Let's talk about suicide and how prevalent it is now, how it is affecting all people of all colors and education levels and how we cannot afford to lose one more person to it. If talking about my self doubts and feelings of being less than can make a difference for just one person...then overcoming my fear to tell the truth was worth it. Our culture's obsession with hyper-instrumentalization has meant everything has to be FOR something. But when you are facing unfixable or chronic problems, maybe it's better to do something for no reason whatsoever. Depression, anxiety, and a grab bag of auto-immune diseases have made humorist Jenny Lawson an expert in the art of the absurd. In this conversation, Kate and Jenny share their tips to getting through horrible days, the evils of insurance bureaucracy, the delight of taxidermy, and discovering joy that you don't have to “choose.” CW: depression, suicidal ideation, chronic illnesses, vampires To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
