Description:What does it mean to be okay when nothing is okay? Not fixed. Not optimized. Not cured. Just… okay. This week, Jen and Amy sit down with bestselling author and professional weirdo Jenny Lawson to talk about surviving — and sometimes even thriving — inside a brain that does not always cooperate. Jenny's new book, How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay, is a field guide for tender humans: a collection of tiny tools for when the big solutions feel impossible. Today, we talk about: Living with “tiny erratic squirrels” in your head Why imposter syndrome gets louder with success Learning to live within your real capacity Why you're not failing if it's just not for you Helpful tools like “weird walks”, “body doubling”, “writing Zooms”,  The radical courage of simply staying This conversation explores what happens when we stop trying to override our nervous systems and start listening to them instead. Midlife has a way of stripping away illusion — about productivity, about comparison, about who we're supposed to be. Jenny reminds us that sometimes grit looks like finishing the book. And sometimes it looks like taking a drink of water and calling it enough. If you are exhausted, if you feel behind, if your brain tells you you're the only one struggling – YOU ARE NOT ALONE. And being “still here” is no small thing. Thought-provoking Quotes: “Self-help books are super helpful for the right kind of person but I'm not that person.” – Jenny Lawson “Keep in mind that what worked for you in the past might not necessarily work for you now or in the future, and that doesn't mean you failed. It just means that's an opportunity.” – Jenny Lawson “If you throw humor into a really dark subject, it gives people permission to laugh. And then that big monster becomes so much smaller.” – Jenny Lawson Resources Mentioned in This Episode: How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay: Tips and Tricks That Kept Me Alive, Happy, and Creative in Spite of Myself by Jenny Lawson – https://amzn.to/4qWKZi5 Samantha Irby – https://www.samanthairby.com/ A Ghost and His Gold by Roberta Eaton Cheadle – https://amzn.to/405lMH8 Anne Rice – https://annerice.com/ Dean Koontz – https://www.deankoontz.com/ Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – https://amzn.to/475Qp31 Focusmate (Body Doubling App) -  https://www.focusmate.com/ Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir) by Jenny Lawson – https://amzn.to/4rGEBN7 Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson – https://amzn.to/4u4RBxG Broken (In The Best Possible Way) by Jenny Lawson – https://amzn.to/4r3Bhuh Jenny Lawson Book Tour - https://thebloggess.com/2026/02/25/how-to-be-okay-when-nothing-is-okay-on-book-tour/ Jenny Lawson's Nowhere Book Shop in San Antonio, TX - https://nowherebookshop.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://thebloggess.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thebloggess/ Twitter - https://x.com/TheBloggess Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jennythebloggess Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/thebloggess/ Substack - https://thebloggess.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. What if the secret to happiness isn't avoiding depression, but using it as a weapon? What if people who feel the deepest sadness can also feel the most intense joy...? Show notes You've been told that mental illness is something to hide. Something to manage quietly or "get over." That's the old way of thinking. And frankly, it's complete bullshit. Furiously Happy shows a new idea: if you can feel crushing sadness, you should also be able to feel crushing happiness. Jenny Lawson doesn't just survive her battles with depression and anxiety. She turns them into weapons of joy. She creates a life so deliberately, furiously happy that it becomes an act of rebellion. "I am furiously happy. It's not a cure for mental illness... it's a weapon, designed to counter it." - Jenny Lawson's approach to mental health Mental illness doesn't stop you from being happy. It can actually make your capacity for joy even stronger when you learn to use your emotional intensity on purpose. •Mental health warriors feeling alone or ashamed of their struggles (spoiler alert: you're not alone and you're definitely not broken) •Caregivers and loved ones who want to understand without saying things like "have you tried yoga?" •Anyone feeling "different" who's tired of pretending to be normal (whatever that means) •Self-advocacy learners ready to stop saying sorry for taking up space in the world Jenny Lawson is a #1 New York Times bestselling author. She somehow convinced the world that her particular brand of chaos counts as "expertise." Known as "The Bloggess," she's won the Audie Award for Best Humor and the NoStigmas Hero Award for mental health advocacy. This is impressive considering she once got lost in her own neighborhood. She's spent over a decade using her platform to remove stigma from mental illness. She's built a community of "magnificent weirdos" who find comfort in her words and questionable life choices. ‘The Help' by Kathryn Stockett. ‘Big Little Lies' by Liane Moriarty. ‘Let's Pretend This Never Happened' by Jenny Lawson. ‘American Dirt' by Jeanine Cummins. ‘This Is How It Always Is' by Laurie Frankel. ‘Listen for the Lie' by Amy Tintera. ‘We Begin At the End' by Chris Whittaker. ‘A Higher Loyalty' by James Comey. ‘The Book of Awesome' by Neil Pasricha.     What do these books have in common? The famed but invisible editor pulling the strings from behind the curtain: Amy Einhorn     Fifteen years ago my seven-month-old blog ‘1000 Awesome Things' was nominated for ‘Best Blog' from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. I was approached by literary agents and my new agent Erin Malone told me she wanted to auction my blog to publishers … next week. Suddenly I was in the foreign position of interviewing editors who were somehow clamoring to publish my book.     I signed with Amy Einhorn—a woman I'd never heard of, who had just started an eponymous imprint I'd never heard of, within Putnam Publishing, which I'd also never heard of. But I was immediately and magnetically attracted to her vision for the book. “It's a hardcover, Neil,” she said. “It's for moms. It's a gift book. You gotta lose the frat boy posts. No blowing your nose in the shower. And I need a lot more new content.”     I learned everything about editing from Amy in our passionate late night diatribe emails, our hot-potato-ing of 300-page Word docs back and forth with 100s of comments in red down the sides, and arguing—good arguing!—about every single element along the way. I'd sit in her office and she'd have a variety of ‘cases' laid out on her desk. “What do you think of 5” by 7”?” she'd say. “Too precious? Too cute?”     Amy is one of the most successful editors in the world today with the highest percentage of books edited hitting the New York Times bestseller list. According to a feature in The Observer, “New York editors and publishers speak of Amy Einhorn's success as the product of an almost mystical editorial instinct.” She has a knack for sniffing out voice, for knowing what will work and what won't and, as you can imagine, I've been begging her to come on 3 Books for six years to hear how it all works.     So I flew down to NYC to talk with the bright, brilliant, and beaming Amy Einhorn about what an editor does, how a book gets published, what helps a book sell, Amy's 3 most formative books, and much, much more.     Let's flip the page to Chapter 140 now…

Happy Mother's Day, Sisters! We hope it will be a joyful one for you and your families. As we know well, our relationships with our moms can run the emotional gamut over the lifespan. We also know that some moms are made for mothering (or work really hard at it!), while some simply fall short because of circumstances they can't (or don't know how to) control.  In Liz Scheier's beautiful, honest memoir, Never Simple, she describes her difficult and complex relationship with her mother, Judith. As a result of Judith's borderline personality disorder (BPD), Liz's childhood was fraught with chaos and volatility. When Liz was 18 years old, her mother dropped two bombshells. One, that her mom had been married for most of the previous two decades to a man Liz had never heard of. And second, that everything she had told Liz about the man she'd claimed was Liz's dead father was entirely fictional. Never Simple is Liz's story about what happened next. We loved our illuminating and intimate conversation with Liz -- and you will, too. Never Simple has garnered praise from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly (starred review), Kirkus, Library Journal, Bookpage, Booklist, and bestselling authors Augusten Burroughs, Jenny Lawson, Isaac Mizrahi, Elissa Altman, Greer Hendricks, and Mira Bartók. It was chosen as a Best Book of March by Amazon and Apple Books, a People Picks by People Magazine, an Indie Next pick, a Barnes & Noble Top 10 Favorite Ebook of 2022, and was featured as one of “15 March Reads to Get You Through the Month” on Good Morning America. It was a finalist for a Lambda Award.

Today's interview is with Jenny Lawson, the president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful, a leading national nonprofit that inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful provides the expertise, programs, and resources to help people end littering, improve recycling, beautify America's public spaces, and restore and support resilient communities.   Before joining Keep America Beautiful, Jenny was the Chief Civic Innovation Officer at Points of Light where she led forward thinking initiatives, partnerships, and campaigns to advance the mission of Points of Light around the world. She designed, led, and championed programs and research to aid companies in achieving their social change goals through the actions of their employees, including the Corporate Service, Council of Leading Brands, the Civic 50, Ranking of Community Minded Companies, and a newly developed digital community, the Community for Employee Civic Engagement.  So needless to say, I think Jenny has a lot of expertise on how nonprofits can work with companies and communities to advance social change, which is a topic that I know all of us are interested in, particularly those of us who are part of the Charity Miles Employee Empowerment Program.  One of those companies is AT&T which is supporting Keep America Beautiful now through our Employee Empowerment Program, and connected us with Jenny for this interview.   I met Jenny in a park up in Connecticut, and we recorded this as a live walking webinar with our members and AT&T's employees.  It was a bit rainy, but that didn't seem to faze Jenny one bit. Huge thanks to Jenny for all of her insight, and to AT&T for their partnership in bringing this to life. #EveryMileMatters!

Summary: Add some Seoul to your day and join Holly and Devin in South Korea for today's Summer Jetset Series episode! While neither of them have made it to Korea yet, they have both fallen in love with the country, the culture, the vibrancy and K-Pop. They appreciate the country for its massive pop-cultural influence in both music with KPop, KDramas and K-beauty trends and fashion - it's exciting to see South Korea stepping more and more onto the global stage. Until you can book your tickets, come armchair travel with us!  Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:51): Devin discussed XOXO by Axie Oh, a delightful YA novel that follows cellist Jenny as she travels from her home in LA to Seoul and the Seoul Arts Academy for a semester to help her mother care for her ailing grandmother. Once there, Jenny realizes that the mysterious hunk she connected with one random night in LA is actually Jaewoo, star of an up-and-coming K-Pop group. Devin's key takeaways were: Whether you're a huge K-Pop fan or new to the scene, this book provides a fantastic overview of the K-Pop experience, both for the fandom and for the group members themselves. Oh executes with wonderful accuracy on the excitement and struggles of Jaewoo and his groupmates.  Unlike most Hallmark movies, XOXO doesn't involve Jenny giving up her own dreams and goals for the sake of Jaewoo; she continues to explore what her cello career and future studies mean to her and her growth is not exclusively driven by her romance; a refreshing and important perspective for all readers. The side characters of this novel are phenomenal, well-rounded, and provide a pop of color and texture to the main plotline of a forbidden love between Jenny and Jaewoo.  The Dagger (16:47): Holly discussed The Plotters by Un-Su Kim, a contemporary novel that delves into the secretive world of assassins. The reader follows Reseng, a contract killer who was raised by the head of an underground organization, Old Racoon. The tensions between old guard leaders like Old Racoon and new blood portrayed by Hanja add layers of intrigue on top of an already compelling assassin story. Holly's key takeaways were: Don't judge a book by it's assassin plot! This novel is introspective and explores the theme of personal identity and the search for meaning in life. Reseng grapples with questions about his own identity as he begins to recognize that his life has been controlled by external forces who have been pulling the strings behind the scenes.  The Plotters raises ethical questions about the nature of killing and the moral implications of assassination while weaving in some seriously intense action scenes. As is the case with 21st-century Korean crime films, this novel relies heavily on sharp and pointy objects that get deadly - principally, knives and hatchets.  As we follow Renseng on his journey, Kim explores the complexities of loyalty and betrayal within his sphere of assassins and underground groups. It raises questions about trust, the nature of relationships, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their own interests.  Hot On the Shelf (33:13): Devin: The Fiancé Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur Holly: The Whispers by Ashley Audrain What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:42): Devin: The Nowhere Bookshop in San Antonio, TX (owned by Jenny Lawson!) Holly: Past Lives, a film in theaters!    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
