Growing up in a blue collar town on the outskirts of Boston, Michael Tolajian's love of Larry Bird and the arts helped him get his big break at NBA Entertainment in the early 90s. After getting his masters at USC Fim School Tolajian jumped back into the world of Sports Television, directing what is hailed as one of the best 30 for 30's of all time, Once Brothers, and has gone on to be a top creative executive at the Pac 12 Network and Fox Sports. Michael details how a Civil War destroyed the once brotherly relationship between Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac. It's impressive to find out how he was able to get Vlade and Drazen's family to be so open and honest. We then transition to a story you may not have ever heard of, Q Ball. Well let's just say Michael went to San Quentin Prison and filmed the story of convicts who earn the right to hoop vs members of the Golden State Warriors staff. I simplified it but it's much deeper than that and we get to hear all about it on this episode of Beyond the Lens.
The 1992 Dream Team is considered the best team ever assembled and for good reason, take a look at the roster below. Their most important game was the gold medal game vs. Croatia in the 1992 Barcelona games. Best team ever going for the gold? Yes, please as a podcast episode, and with the Tokyo games fast approaching we figured this was good from a timing standpoint. Croatia and their former country Yugosalvia's emergence on the world basketball stage was the reason USA Basketball decided to fill their roster with NBA players so it was fitting they played them for the gold. Croatia had NBA players in their own right in Tony Kukoc, Drazen Petrovic, and Dino Radja. We did a very in depth breakdown on this period in Croatian/Yugosalvian basketball during our "ONCE BROTHERS" documentary recap that you should check out. In this episode we discuss: Isiah Thomas' notable omission from the Dream Team, while Chuck Daly was head coach The influence the Dream Team had on international basketball for decades to come Michael Jordan's stardom at an all-time high Charles Barkley having a great Olympic games both on and off the court and how he parlayed that into a great 1993 nBA season for the Suns Watching dream team highlights was awesome Marv Albert and Mike Fratello doing nothing to keep viewers tuned in Larry Bird and Magic Johnson being elected captains John Stockton played with a cracked bone in his leg? Scottie Pippen's contract dispute and him taking it out on Toni Kukoc in the pool play round The Croatian's hanging in this game for a little bit much, much, more.... EPISODE 24: Some exciting Family news, and a quick dessert debate, before we get into Basketball News of the Week (9:04). We talk about Thibs and The Joker winning awards, all four playoff series, coaching changes around the NBA, Pat Riley, Giannis' free throws, Commissioner's Cup and Power Ranking updates, Jewell Loyd and Arike Ogunbowale winning games, the MVP race, Jonquel Jones going to Europe, and the conclusion of the James Wade situation. Next, we review the ESPN documentary, Once Brothers (30:41), in which we have one of our most serious discussions surrounding a movie review. Finally, we play a new game, Commissioner for a Day (51:26), where we each list the changes we would make if we got to be Commissioner of the WNBA and NBA for a day.

30 for 30 documentary reviewed: "Once Brothers." Sam Anderson, Ren Clayton, and Nic Rudolph opine about Vlade Divac and the negative implications that the Yugoslavian Civil War had on his former teammates and friends. The guys get a good history lesson about what is now the former Yugoslavia. They play Mount Rushmore with international NBA players. And Nic suggests a doc idea for a film exploring how sports mascots come to be, and the issues surrounding the topic. Oh, and the the NFL playoffs are chit chatted about.

On this episode we look at documentaries about a country’s ties to their respective sports teams with a 30 For 30 film ONCE BROTHERS about an Olympic basketball team that is broken up once the nation breaks out into civil war, which is very similar in premise to the other documentary we will review (except much different in tone) with THE OTHER DREAM TEAM. Hopefully that’s not too much sportsing for our film nerd listeners, because first, we also have an interview with Gabe Polsky, director of the new film RED ARMY.
