For 26 years, I called basketball games inside of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. No one had heard me outside of a prison yard until the Golden State Warriors came inside of San Quentin State Prison and then Coach Jackson said “I know some guys at ESPN that would be worried about their job if they heard you.”No one knew who I was until Marcus Thompson of Theathletic.com wrote about me on his visit to the prison in 2017.And no one saw me until the movie “Q Ball” was shown during the shutdown due to coronavirus. Now, I'm home, and after working in the Venice Basketball and several other leagues in and around Southern California, its time for me to not only provide play by play for sports, but to also introduce the athletes that play sports to an audience eager to learn about how others triumph over tragedy. My story isn't the only one that's unique. Sit for a little bit and listen to others who've also overcome great odds to succeed.

California's Three Strikes law began in 1994. Under this law, a person convicted of any new felony, while having a prior felony conviction, would be sentenced to state prison for twice the term otherwise provided for the crime. If the defendant was convicted of any felony with two or more prior strikes, the law mandated a state prison term of at least 25 years to life. The law was designed to be “tough on crime,” but in reality, it was tough on Black and Latino communities. African Americans make up the largest group of second and third strikers followed by Latinos. According to a study by the Justice Policy Institute, Black people are disproportionately impacted by the three-strikes law. Although only 6.5% of California's population is Black, 44.7% of inmates serving out sentences for third strikes are Black. These are the statistics Allan McIntosh fell victim to in 1998. A previous robbery and theft conviction were his first two strikes. McIntosh was searched after being stopped by LBPD for riding his bike with a broken light and not using the crosswalk. McIntosh, who was living in a gang-infested community, had a weapon. That was his third strike and he was sentenced to 25 years to life on a non-violent charge. Luckily, McIntosh was a cellmate with Cesar McDowell who started Unite the People to help provide aid to people who were unjustly sentenced. With the help of McDowell and a documentary made about McIntosh's life called Q-Ball, Allen McIntosh will be released from prison on Monday, June 29, 2022. On today's episode of “The Word” podcast, Jackie Rae speaks with Unite the People Founder Cesar McDowell and Macintosh's wife Daviena to discuss how they reached this point. You can learn more about Unite the People here.

Growing up in a blue collar town on the outskirts of Boston, Michael Tolajian's love of Larry Bird and the arts helped him get his big break at NBA Entertainment in the early 90s. After getting his masters at USC Fim School Tolajian jumped back into the world of Sports Television, directing what is hailed as one of the best 30 for 30's of all time, Once Brothers, and has gone on to be a top creative executive at the Pac 12 Network and Fox Sports. Michael details how a Civil War destroyed the once brotherly relationship between Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac. It's impressive to find out how he was able to get Vlade and Drazen's family to be so open and honest. We then transition to a story you may not have ever heard of, Q Ball. Well let's just say Michael went to San Quentin Prison and filmed the story of convicts who earn the right to hoop vs members of the Golden State Warriors staff. I simplified it but it's much deeper than that and we get to hear all about it on this episode of Beyond the Lens.
“The [basketball] court is not a prison…When I step on the court…it's like the air is different.” At 16 years old, Anthony Ammons was sentenced to 102 years to life in prison. But, while locked up, he found home, peace, and authenticity on the basketball court. Anthony is one of the stars of the documentary film Q Ball, which follows the San Quentin Warriors, the basketball team made up of men incarcerated in San Quentin prison, throughout one season. In this episode, we explore his early life in a gang, his realization of his own self-worth, basketball, and what it was like to be on the Covid Strike Team inside prison. We also laugh quite a bit as he shares funny stories about returning to life in the free world 3 months ago. In this episode I interview my friend Don Smith who tells the story of the San Quentin warriors, a basketball team in San Quentin, which is being made famous by the soon to be released film "Q Ball" from executive producer Kevin Durant of the other Warriors. Don Smith launched the ministry back in 1996 when his church had an invitation to go play basketball with the inmates in the prison. When he walked in the the yard and turn the corner to see all the inmates he heard a still small voice whisper to him "Isn't this a great place to minister." He's been faithful to that invitation and God has surprised us all. I've had the privilege to be a small part of that ministry. Q Ball the movie, highlights the lives of the inmates we've ministered too and who have become our friends. It's a powerful story very well told that tackles one of the biggest challenges of our society. Watch the movie which aires on Fox Sports, Tuesday May 28th at 6PM. Click here to watch the trailer. Listen to this podcast to hear some of the story of how it all began. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/miracles-transformation/message
