Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

We’ve all been angry at a situation and let it out on social media. It makes sense: that’s a place our friends and community can gather from afar and acknowledge our feelings and join in the process of venting. The trouble these days, however, seems to be when that’s all we do when we have legitimate concerns about policies or the actions of others, particularly those in a position of authority. When it comes to complaining, there’s not necessarily a right way, but there certainly are effective ways, especially when we want to see change as a result of our concerns. Whether it’s someone trespassing on property, a community member feeding wildlife inappropriately or a complaint about how a public official conducted themselves, it’s important to understand that without proper communication, little may change. That’s why I connected with Bryce Casavant, the former Conservation Officer who faced disciplinary action for refusing to kill two innocent bear cubs. With his mixed background of military and law enforcement, as well as his PhD studies at Royal Rhodes and new role with Pacific Wild, Bryce was the ideal candidate for this interview. We discussed government complaints processes, how and when the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act can be utilized, and the reality that many people in our communities may face very real fears or wade through the tides of others’ privilege to exercise their rights.  Pacific Wild: www.PacificWild.org Defender Radio Facebook: www.Facebook.com/DefenderRadio/ Defender Radio Twitter: www.Twitter.com/DefenderRadio Defender Radio Instagram: www.Instagram.com/HowieMichael Defender Radio Patreon: www.Patreon.com/DefenderRadio

Did you know that there is a group of rare white bears that live in Canada? These bears are completely white. But these aren’t polar bears. And they aren’t albino. They are actually black bears with a genetic mutation that makes them white. They are known as Spirit Bears and only live in the coastal rainforest in British Columbia. Conservationist and filmmaker Ian McAllister has spent years documenting the Spirit Bears and is the director of the IMAX film The Great Bear Rainforest. He is also an awarding winning photographer, the author of six books, co-founder of Pacific Wild. The first minute is a tidbit about Chilko trying to spread love and being greeted with a frightened tourist, and ultimately, the boys in blue. A man, a dog, a sea of granite, a camera, and a beautiful landscape that despite being out of reach from the masses finds its grand natural beauty threatened by humanity. This week we’re joined by Ian McAllister, co-founder and Executive Director of Pacific Wild, a non-profit located in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. McAllister is committed to defending wildlife and their habitat on Canada’s Pacific Coast. The wolves of the Great Bear Rainforest give us an entry point into understanding human relationships with the wolves of the past and throughout history as time honored messengers, providers and protectors. This conversation with Ian is a call to rekindle and reclaim our relationship as humble companions. Where roads have not been built, nor forests plowed and paved over, the wolves are able to experience a freedom from the slaughter brought to them by the first colonial settlers to Turtle Island, who also brought with them an insidious path of destruction that has precipitated the destruction of all our wild kin and the genocide of Indigenous Peoples. Wolves are calling on us to stand up to protect that which remains, that which serves as the reminder of time eternal.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

Cull is a four-letter word – and that double-meaning is finally becoming more clear. For years, governments and consumptive wildlife users have argued that culls are necessary – be it for protecting game species, land, or to encourage a specific type of behaviour from hunters and trappers. But science, advocates, and, it seems, even government reports, indicate that these culls are so ineffective that in some cases their effect is a complete 180 from the intended result. This week, Defender Radio connected with two people who have interesting things to say about culls. First, we’ll hear from Dr. Adrian Treves of the Carnivore Coexistence Lab in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose recent study has revealed that, in his test area, a cull initiated to reduce poaching of wolves actually increased the illegal hunting. We’ll also hear from Krista Roessingh of Pacific Wild, one of the groups responsible for a court action against the British Columbia government’s culling of wolves to allegedly protect endangered mountain caribou herds – and the shocking revelations that came as a result of the court case.

International pop star Miley Cyrus visited the Great Bear Rainforest in BC with her brother to learn more about the controversial wolf cull and trophy hunting of grizzly bears. Her weekend sojourn was spent with advocates from the Kitasoo/Xais’Xai First Nation, scientists, and staffers from Pacific Wild. Cyrus spoke to media extensively following her visit, noting that her previous passion to end the wolf cull for moral reasons now had science behind it. When asked about the international attention being brought to the notorious cull and trophy hunts, Premier Christy Clark merely laughed away concern, and made a remark about Cyrus’s performance-based fashion choices. Joining us to talk more about the visit of Cyrus, the surprising response of the Premier, and the science behind the #SaveBCWolves movement is Pacific Wild’s April Bencze.

I have had the privilege of visiting the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia two times and plan on going back every year. Many people have not heard of this region - a vast network of islands - stretching along the coast of B.C. to Alaska. This magical kingdom, where salmon is the foundation of the ecosystem, is a last bastion for everything wild and wonderful in Canada - from Orcas to Grizzlies - Humpback Whales to Wolves -and, of course, the legendary Spirit Bear, found only in the Great Bear Rainforest. This bio-treasure should be cherished and protected, but surprisingly, the Canadian government could risk it all - for oil.Calgary-based Enbridge Inc., wants to run an oil pipeline from Alberta through the Great Bear Rainforest, and the government supports it. Fortunately there is a growing coalition of First Nations, Environmentalists and concerned citizens who oppose the project, knowing that all it takes is one spill and goodbye salmon...which means goodbye Spirit Bear. I would like to give special thanks to Ian McAllister from Pacific Wild, for acting as a consultant on this podcast. Please support Ian's efforts to save the Great Bear Rainforest by visiting www.pacificwild.org. I also want to thank the great musicians and natural sound artists who contributed to this show: David Arkenstone "Yosemite," Attilio Casati "Reflections," Peter Buffett "Northern Morning," and Peter Davidson "Soft Light."
