Australia was the first country to adopt a ban. Canada's federal government is signaling that something is coming from them soon. A recent Angus Reid poll found 75 per cent of Canadians support the idea. But even among those who acknowledge the harm social media causes for young people, the answer is not so clear cut. We're joined by Taylor Owen, the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics and Communications at McGill University. He's a part of the federal government's expert advisory group on online safety and on its AI strategy taskforce. He makes the argument that a ban isn't a silver bullet and that we need to focus on making social media safer for everyone. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

It's been one year since Mark Carney became Prime Minister. He was long known as a technocrat, having held the position of central banker for both Canada and the United Kingdom. But when Justin Trudeau resigned, Liberals – and later, Canadians – decided Carney was the man for the moment. One year later, his popularity is holding strong: an Angus Reid poll found that 60 per cent of Canadians held a positive view of him as Prime Minister. How has Carney managed to keep Canadians onside despite having so little experience in elected politics? Shannon Proudfoot is a feature writer and columnist for The Globe. She'll unpack what she's observed about how Carney has cultivated his political persona, and whether there are any signs that his honeymoon phase with Canadians might be coming to an end. Questions? Tokyo, Japan - Wrapping up a rigorous 10-day, three-country tour aimed at expanding Canadian market access in Asia, Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed reporters on Saturday in Tokyo, focusing heavily on the escalating security situation in the Middle East. He confirmed that, as of yet, Canada has not received any formal requests for military assistance or aid from Persian Gulf states, stating that he does not "necessarily anticipate those requests." Carney's comments come against a backdrop of rising regional instability, primarily fueled by the Iran conflict, which was initially sparked by recent military strikes carried out by the US and Israel. This situation has heightened concerns among Canada's regional allies. Just days prior, on Thursday, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan publicly acknowledged that Gulf partners "may require defence and support" in light of the ongoing hostilities. A Contradictory Stance and Domestic Division The Prime Minister's handling of the crisis has drawn significant criticism domestically. Carney initially offered support for the US and Israeli strikes but subsequently expressed reservations, questioning whether the actions breached international law—a perceived contradiction that has fueled political debate. This policy ambivalence appears to reflect a divided public. A newly released Angus Reid poll indicates a sharp split among Canadians, with 48% voicing opposition to greater Canadian involvement or the government's current posture, compared to 35% who remain supportive. Adding to the scrutiny, prominent voices, including former Liberal Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy and current Liberal MP Will Greaves, have publicly criticized Carney's evolving stance as contradictory and lacking clarity. Upcoming Parliamentary Showdown The return of Parliament next week is set to bring the Middle East policy under intense scrutiny. The New Democrats have already signaled their intent to force a debate on the conflict and Canada's role, ensuring that the government will face immediate questions upon the session's resumption. In anticipation of this challenge, Mr. Carney has been reiterating that Canada's foremost priority remains the protection and evacuation of its citizens from the volatile region. He stressed that diplomatic "talks continue with Gulf leaders" to ensure the safety of Canadian nationals and coordinate a peaceful resolution where possible. Trade and Trump Define the Tour Beyond the immediate crisis, Mr. Carney's lengthy tour was primarily focused on economic diplomacy. Analysts suggest that a major, though often downplayed, component of the trip was managing relations with the United States under President Donald Trump. While the Prime Minister sought to expand trade with Asian nations, his overall approach is widely seen as being shaped by the imperative of safeguarding Canada's position in North America. This was evident in his consistent downplaying of separate, ongoing US-Mexico talks concerning the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a key trade pact that is foundational to the Canadian economy. The need to maintain stable relations with the Trump administration, according to observers, remains the central constraint guiding the Prime Minister's foreign policy decisions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.

In this episode of The Voice of Retail podcast, host Michael LeBlanc welcomes back retail strategist, educator, and thought leader David Ian Gray, Principal of DIG360 Consulting Ltd. and retail faculty at Capilano University's School of Business. Together, they explore the latest Angus Reid survey on Canadian shopping habits and the rapidly evolving pre-owned and circular retail economy.David begins by setting the stage with his dual role: guiding Canadian retailers through strategic challenges while also developing retail-focused academic programming in Vancouver. He shares his perspective on how the local retail scene is rebuilding post-pandemic, with indie retail and dining seeing a revival even as downtown Vancouver struggles with the loss of anchor stores like Nordstrom and Hudson's Bay.The heart of the conversation is David's latest consumer research, developed in partnership with Angus Reid. The study reveals that 77% of Canadian adults purchased pre-owned items in the past year, proving that second-hand shopping has gone fully mainstream. Canadians aren't just bargain hunting—they're motivated by sustainability, affordability, and the thrill of finding something unique. The conversation highlights surprising generational behaviors, such as Gen Z's enthusiasm for vinyl records and printed books, a countertrend to the assumption that digital-first generations avoid physical media. David suggests this reflects a desire for independence from digital platforms and a deeper need for tangible, cultural experiences.Michael and David also unpack the dominance of Facebook Marketplace, where 76% of respondents reported making a purchase in the past year, underscoring the hybrid online/offline nature of second-hand shopping. They contrast this with other channels—Kijiji, eBay, luxury resale platforms like Poshmark, charity thrift stores, and even brand-led resale initiatives from Canada Goose, IKEA, and Patagonia. For Canadian retailers, the research carries critical lessons. Second-hand is no longer a niche category but a major competitor for consumer dollars. David warns that traditional retailers may underestimate how much revenue is “leaking” into resale markets. While profitability challenges remain—logistics, inventory management, and product quality—brands that strategically embrace resale can enhance consumer loyalty, sustainability credentials, and differentiation. The episode closes with a rapid-fire round covering the future of AI in retail, Hudson's Bay's uncertain real estate footprint, Vancouver's Retail West conference, and the biggest Canadian retail story to watch in 2025: tariff uncertainty. David emphasizes that until trade clarity is achieved, Canadian retailers will remain cautious in decision-making. In 1998, Canada achieved what health officials call "measles elimination status" but now the country could lose that designation. Ontario is reporting more measles cases each week than it once saw over an entire decade. And just earlier this month Ontario's Ministry of Health has announced the first recorded death of a measles patient. Alberta is also experiencing its worst measles outbreak since the mid 90s. And according to the Pan American Health Organization, Canada has more cases than any other country in the Americas. At the same time, vaccine hesitancy has grown nationally along with a drop in measles immunization rates which is prompting some to call for mandatory childhood measles vaccination. An Angus Reid poll conducted last month found that 69% of Canadians agreed that vaccinations should be mandatory for kids. Our question: Should a childhood measles vaccination be mandatory?
