Electrocurrents are being used to stun pest fish so they can be scooped up, brought to land, and killed at Auckland's Western Springs Lake. Jessica Hopkins reports.
Wildlife policy battles are heating up across the country. In this episode, the Big Hunt Guys sit down with Charles Whitwam of Howl For Wildlife to discuss their recent documentary "Killing Catalina" and the Catalina Island Conservancy's plan to eradicate all mule deer on the island in the name of habitat restoration, reduce wildfire risk, and to benefit other wildlife species due to an "overpopulation" of deer. Later the guys talk with Dane Gates of CRWM about Colorado legislation that threatens trapping, fur markets, and rodent control tools. Dan also offers a current update on the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. We explore how these efforts gained traction, why they matter beyond state lines, and how hunters can engage before ballot initiatives permanently reshape conservation.Learn more about GOHUNT.Follow GOHUNT on Social Media:InstagramYouTube - Podcast ChannelYouTube - Main ChannelFacebook

Calvin Duncan grew up in the ninth ward in New Orleans. His mother died when he was very young. He stole food so he'd have enough to eat. When he was 19, Duncan was arrested for allegedly killing a man during a robbery. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, spending more than 28 years in Angola, Louisiana's notorious state penitentiary. That's when Duncan began studying law. In 2011, he was released from prison and at the age of 60, Duncan graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School. He's just scored another first. This November, Calvin Duncan was elected Clerk of the Criminal Court in New Orleans. Duncan and Sophie Cull co-wrote The Jailhouse Lawyer. "Now What?" is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
There's only one thing on John Obi Mikel's mind in this episode of Taking the Mikel: Nigeria's failure to reach the World Cup Finals. Again. The former Super Eagles captain calls for every member of the NFF to stand down in the wake of their defeat to DR Congo, opens the door to joining a new-look board IF certain criteria is met and asks the question: why hasn't any African nation used ‘voodoo practices' to actually win the World Cup? Eric Chelle's long-term future as coach also comes under the microscope while Obi Mikel makes no secret of the fact over who he'll be supporting next summer now. A must-listen for all Nigerian football fans struggling to come to terms with their side's World Cup demise and eager to see a regime chance at the top of the Nigerian Football Federation. As a teenager, Calvin was wrongfully charged with and ultimately convicted of a homicide. He faced a life sentence in Angola State Prison. For the nearly three decades that Calvin was wrongfully incarcerated, he worked as a jailhouse lawyer. The federal budget has passed its second big test in the House of Commons, as federal Conservatives wrap up a difficult week. One of their MP's crossed the floor to the Liberals, another says he is leaving Parliament altogether. And: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency culls the ostrich population on a farm in Edgewood, B.C. Yesterday, the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal to save the flock. Tests last year detected avian flu in some dead ostriches on the farm. The fate of the birds has been hotly debated, as the farm owners and supporters have demanded they be saved. Also: Drought is forcing many Canadians who rely on wells to turn to bottled water. And the line to dig new wells just keeps getting longer.Plus: Onboard a NATO surveillance plane, what's next for pharmacare, U.S. flight cancellations, and more.
Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux resigns from Parliament. His decision didn't come with an explanation. It makes it more likely the Liberals will be able to pass the federal budget in a few weeks. Also: The CFIA moves in to cull an ostrich herd in B.C., after a fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. And: The U.S. government shutdown could have an effect on your travel plans. Airports at major hubs across the U.S. are cutting the number of flights starting tomorrow. The Federal Aviation Administration says, because of the shutdown, air traffic controllers are working without pay. And many have not been coming in to work.Plus: Researchers will test a hundred thousand people in Ontario to see if they carry genes that put them at a higher risk of cancer and heart disease, COP30 begins in Brazil, will a boost in funding for school meals be enough, and more.
The Supreme Court of Canada will not hear an appeal to prevent the cull of hundreds of ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C. Dr. Scott Weese, the chief of infection control at the Ontario Veterinary College teaching hospital, joins the show to discuss the scientific and political context of the high court's decision. CBC's Caroline Barghout goes live from the ostrich farm in Edgewood to break down the aftermath, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency saying they will now move forward with the cull.
Almost a year after an avian flu outbreak was detected on an ostrich farm in rural British Columbia, the fate of the flock remains in the crosshairs of a culture war over public health policy.Plans to euthanize the remaining birds by Canadian authorities are on pause as the Supreme Court of Canada considers the case. The cull order catalyzed fierce protest by the farm owners and their hundreds of supporters, backed by top White House health officials, decrying what they see as government overreach.Host Caryn Ceolin is joined by Dr. Angela Rasmussen, virologist at the University of Saskatchewan, to discuss why the case became a flashpoint, and whether the government's ability to enforce public health policy is at risk. Are you over-delivering your galleries and overwhelming your clients in the process? In this episode, Chelsea breaks down how to ruthlessly cull your galleries — and why less is actually more. She shares her personal workflow, how she decides what stays or goes, the “frame-worthy gallery” mindset that guides her, and why continuing to cull while editing will completely transform your final delivery.
The CFIA ordered a full ostrich cull after H5N1 was detected, even though wild migratory birds likely contaminated the farm's pond — making the ostriches victims, not disease spreaders New studies from California dairy farms show H5N1 in air and wastewater, suggesting industrial livestock operations are aerosolizing and recycling the virus back into the environment through waste systems Despite evidence of natural immunity, CFIA's policy mandates culling all birds on an exposed site, ignoring science and logic by killing healthy survivors that pose less risk Factory farms generate billions of pounds of untreated manure annually, with open-air lagoons and runoff creating ideal conditions for virus transmission — yet regulatory focus remains on small farms A smarter policy would target the real sources — contaminated air, lagoons, and waste — not small farms. Testing, environmental controls, and accountability must come before destroying healthy animals

Scientists say another planetary boundary — the environmental speed limits that warn us of a destabilizing planet — has been crossed. Greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels have pushed the acidity of the world's oceans past a safe threshold. And: The Supreme Court of Canada grants a stay on the cull of about 400 birds on an ostrich farm in B.C.. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency ordered the flock destroyed last year, after tests showed avian flu in some ostriches that had died. The court is allowing the delay as the farm applies for leave to appeal the decision. Also: One day after unexpected support from the U.S. president, President Vlodomyr Zelenskyy pleads with the United Nations General Assembly not to give up on Ukraine. He warns Russia wants to expand its war beyond his country.Plus: Carney challenged on public safety minister's comments, middle school at grade six may not be good for grades, deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Texas, and more.
