Almost a year after an avian flu outbreak was detected on an ostrich farm in rural British Columbia, the fate of the flock remains in the crosshairs of a culture war over public health policy.Plans to euthanize the remaining birds by Canadian authorities are on pause as the Supreme Court of Canada considers the case. The cull order catalyzed fierce protest by the farm owners and their hundreds of supporters, backed by top White House health officials, decrying what they see as government overreach.Host Caryn Ceolin is joined by Dr. Angela Rasmussen, virologist at the University of Saskatchewan, to discuss why the case became a flashpoint, and whether the government's ability to enforce public health policy is at risk. Are you over-delivering your galleries and overwhelming your clients in the process? In this episode, Chelsea breaks down how to ruthlessly cull your galleries — and why less is actually more. She shares her personal workflow, how she decides what stays or goes, the “frame-worthy gallery” mindset that guides her, and why continuing to cull while editing will completely transform your final delivery.
The CFIA ordered a full ostrich cull after H5N1 was detected, even though wild migratory birds likely contaminated the farm's pond — making the ostriches victims, not disease spreaders New studies from California dairy farms show H5N1 in air and wastewater, suggesting industrial livestock operations are aerosolizing and recycling the virus back into the environment through waste systems Despite evidence of natural immunity, CFIA's policy mandates culling all birds on an exposed site, ignoring science and logic by killing healthy survivors that pose less risk Factory farms generate billions of pounds of untreated manure annually, with open-air lagoons and runoff creating ideal conditions for virus transmission — yet regulatory focus remains on small farms A smarter policy would target the real sources — contaminated air, lagoons, and waste — not small farms. Testing, environmental controls, and accountability must come before destroying healthy animals
The India-based Bishnoi gang, accused last year by the RCMP of orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation against Sikh activists in Canada, was listed as a terrorist entity by the federal government on Monday. The owner of Jak and Jill's, a children's consignment shop in Pitt Meadows, has been dealing for years with vandalism, drug paraphernalia, and even human waste left at her storefront. But last week, after confronting a man she says was causing trouble, her store was deliberately set on fire. In Parliament, MP Scott Anderson criticized the government and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for ordering the cull of around 400 ostriches without sufficient transparency or consultation with the farm operators. The Office of Public Works have culled more than 118 deer in Phoenix Park since the beginning of last year. It comes after they have paid €17,000 to snipers to manage the deer population in the capital.UCD, who tag fawns and keep track of the deer population in the park, found that the way deer were being targeted for culls by the OPW up to 2018 was “not a recommended approach”.The report recommended that “at least 65 individuals” should be targeted during each culling season in order to keep the deer population in the Phoenix Park “stable and sustainable”.Is culling deer the best approach to managing this population, or are there alternative measures to manage these animals?Joining Andrea to discuss is John Tierney from the Association of Hunt Saboteurs, as well as listeners.

There's a call to cull some of New Zealand's ministers. A new report from the New Zealand Initiative found New Zealand has 81 ministerial portfolios, while comparable countries have a third of that. The think-tank says we should be more like countries with comparable populations, like Norway which has 17 portfolios, and Singapore with 16. Co-author Roger Partridge told Mike Hosking we keep slicing off pieces of portfolios and giving them new names, resulting in important policy areas being split across multiple ministers. Housing for example, reports up to 12 ministers, he says, and when you splinter key portfolios you get fragmented decision-making, a lack of accountability, and higher costs. Picture this: You're a medical professional on a routine work trip when suddenly you're playing a real-life game of survival that makes Bear Grylls look like a weekend camper. Meet Tiffany Slaton, the dialysis tech from Georgia who accidentally became the Sierra Nevada's most badass temporary resident. What started as just another day at the office turned into a 24-day masterclass in "how to not die in the mountains."
