What a day it is to be a Wests Tigers fan! Sure, we haven't kicked a ball yet in 2025, but today might just be one of the biggest in the club's long history. Today, Wests Tigers had four independent directors appointed to the club's board. This means that Wests Tigers now has a board that meets the independent review recommendations that we all fought so hard for. These are directors who bring talent and nous from different backgrounds and are giving of their time and professional skills for one reason - to advance the Wests Tigers. That is very exciting! Barry O'Farrell is one of the independent board members, he is expected to be voted in as Wests Tigers Chairman at a meeting later this month. Joining the representatives from Holman Barnes Group, Balmain Tigers, and Wests Magpies on the Wests Tigers board will be: Charlie Viola, Executive Chair of Viola Private Wealth, and former Partner at Pitcher Partners. Charlie is a prominent Financial Advisor and Industry leader, with exceptional financial management, commercial and strategy skills. Charlie grew up in Campbelltown and now lives in the Inner West. Michelle McDowell, former Managing Director of Allied Express, brings a wealth of experience in commercial, operations and logistics. Michelle has significant business acumen and is passionate about community. Michelle has deep commercial insights into the Western suburbs of Sydney. Annabelle Williams OAM PLY, Former Chair of the Athlete’s Commission for Paralympics Australia, and former Board member of the Paralympics Australia and Swimming Australia. Annabelle is a Lawyer and a decorated athlete, with deep insights in High-Performance, and is an advocate for inclusion and excellence in sport. Annabelle grew up in Balmain. To mark these important appointments, and this important day, Garry Watson and Joel Helmes sat down and recorded this latest edition of the Wests Tigers Unite podcast. She explains that when working in elite parasport it is important to spend time connecting with and learning about everyone. Empathy, strong relationships, and understanding what is going on for participants in the context of their wider environment is critical for being successful as a skill acquisition specialist.Georgia highlights the importance of individualised, non-linear journeys that facilitate the experiences and opportunities to grow in ways that relevant to the participants at the right time. Her top tips include:Connect to the individual first and be creative and innovative.Work across the whole team if possible (coaches, participants, coach developers, strength coaches, etc.)Record everything you do; session plans, practice adaptions, post coaching reflections, and reflective discussions. Try to find ways to reflect that work for you.Don't worry if practice looks chaotic or ugly at times. If you are paying attention to what you are doing and the results you are getting, you'll start to understand what works and recognise improvements over time.Whatever your role, if you're helping people to be active and improve, we're here for you. Rebecca Frizelle is known widely for her strong advocacy for the city of Gold Coast. She is one of the largest employers in the area with more than 900 employees under the Frizelle Sunshine Group, her automotive business, presenting 24 global franchises. Her love of cars was ignited when she took up a part-time job in the motor business to help fund her law degree. While her law degree remains unfinished, her undeniable passion for the industry has her name written all over it. Rebecca is the Chief Operating Officer of Frizelle Prestige and a key shareholder in Frizelle Sunshine Automotive and Peter Warren Automotive. She is also the Dealer Principal of Audi Centre Gold Coast, Audi Centre South Brisbane, South Brisbane Jaguar Land Rover and Ferrari Gold Coast. In this podcast, Rebecca talks of her courageous single mother of four who relocated their family from Canberra to Queensland in 1978 to create a brighter future. Her mother taught her that anything was possible and Rebecca has indeed proven this to be true. An unlikely candidate for a sporting role, Rebecca admits she had no interest in rugby league ten years ago. But that all changed however in 2014 when she became the first female Chair in the NRL code. She was appointed to the Board of the Titans and declared her love of the game. So much so that in 2017, she pursued a personal ownership stake in the Club, of which she is now a 50% shareholder along with her husband. Rebecca's portfolio includes directorship with the publicly listed Sunland Group Ltd, Audi Australia Foundation Board, LifeFlight Australia Ltd and Paralympics Australia. More recently, she was approached to join the Community Rebuilding Initiative (BizRebuild) Board chaired by General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove (Retd), to support businesses and communities affected by the 2019/2020 bushfires and to assist in the rebuild of these regional towns. Rebecca's substantive career and generous contributions to the motor industry and rugby league were formally recognised last year when she was awarded an Order of Australia. Todd ‘The Hulk' Hodgetts speaks candidly about life with autism in Australia and why he refuses to let disability control his life. He talks about focusing on what he can do and his coping strategies for managing his emotions and learning new skills.  Hodgetts, a two-time Paralympian who won F20 shot put gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, opened up on how his intellectual impairment has affected his life, how he has learnt to interact with others and his early years dealing with his disability.  "I was eight years of age. It wasn't great. It's like you've just jumped off a bridge or a cliff, one of the hardest days of my life. 'How am I going to get out of this situation and try and act as normal as possible?' Then, when I was 16, I said to the doctor: 'Am I cured yet?' because I had more tests. He just laughed. I didn't really want this when I was born, I just wanted to be normal and live a normal life." The gentle giant of Paralympics Australia is a fighter and  a true great of his sport. You could say he's taken his inspiration from the movies – and one franchise in particular.  “My life is beginning now, I'm still learning things. It's not over until it's over. That's from the Rocky movies, it's one of my mottos and you just have to keep going. I'm a local boy from Tasmania who never had anything in life because people said I had a few learning difficulties. He becomes an undisputed champion of the world. Keep on keeping on.”  Hodgetts' story is one of bravery, barrier breaking behaviours and an outlook on the world that is mixed with religion, love and humour.   Learning topics for this episode include mental health, non-visible disabilities, strength training, religion, interacting with others and inspiration.  Allianz is a long-standing partner of the International Paralympic Committee. Together, we're proud to bring you this series of podcasts. We aim to help you move forward in all aspects of your personal and professional life.  By hearing from Paralympic stars, you'll be introduced to stories that inspire and change the way you think.
