There's a call to cull some of New Zealand's ministers. A new report from the New Zealand Initiative found New Zealand has 81 ministerial portfolios, while comparable countries have a third of that. The think-tank says we should be more like countries with comparable populations, like Norway which has 17 portfolios, and Singapore with 16. Co-author Roger Partridge told Mike Hosking we keep slicing off pieces of portfolios and giving them new names, resulting in important policy areas being split across multiple ministers. Housing for example, reports up to 12 ministers, he says, and when you splinter key portfolios you get fragmented decision-making, a lack of accountability, and higher costs. Jet-setting ministers have cost the taxpayers more than R273m in travel costs. According to ActionSA's GNU tracker, ministers have spent R273m on travel, accommodation, stipends and related costs since July 2024, covering both domestic and international trips. The tracker excludes salaries and capital assets and is updated continuously. The Ministerial Advisory Group on Transnational, Serious and Organised Crime says bold action on data-sharing is needed to rein in the rapidly evolving threat of organised crime. The group's chair Steve Symon spoke to Corin Dann.
There are fears limited information sharing is hindering authorities efforts to tackle transnational crime. A report from a Ministerial Advisory Group focused on organised crime says there's sparse coordination between agencies, technological limitations, and people are fearful of sharing what could be useful information. It's recommending a new sharing framework and tweaks to the Privacy Act to make it easier. Chair Steve Symon told Mike Hosking change is needed. He says he's been a prosecutor for 20 years and it's been the bane of their existence, which has worsened over time as agencies become more siloed and risk adverse. Wellington City Council's Crown Observer believes Tory Whanau made the right move in deciding not to run for Mayor again. Lindsay McKenzie has ended his six month stint after being brought in by the Government last year to be its eyes and ears as the council failed to deliver a long-term plan. His final report suggests the capital is facing the same problems as the rest of the country but is steadily progressing. McKenzie says the council has effectively solved the problems that were the catalyst for the Ministerial intervention, and the level of cooperation and consideration for each other's views and preferences has increased. When it comes to Whanau's leadership, he told Nick Mills that it's a tough ask for somebody to come into a mayoral role with no local government experience, especially in the capital city, and it showed. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Legal and settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon and Knesset reporter Ariela Karmel join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. We begin the program with an update on the ongoing saga of the attempts to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. On Sunday morning, the five-member ministerial committee recently set up to dismiss the attorney general voted unanimously to recommend that the government to dismiss her. We hear what are the potential next steps toward firing her -- and probable backlash. Yesterday at the Knesset conference called “The Gaza Riviera – from vision to reality,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich endorsed a “security annexation” of the northern Gaza Strip and claimed that Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir favors the idea. Dozens of right-wing politicians and activists claim they are set to "right a historic wrong" that occurred 20 years ago with the 2005 Disengagement. Karmel sets the scene. Israeli authorities have said they are taking control of the management of the Tomb of the Patriarchs holy site in Hebron, in order to carry out construction work at the flashpoint West Bank shrine. Sharon explains how there is precedent for this temporary control and delves into why the move is so controversial this time. And finally, in June, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced that it had opened an investigation into “matters related to the Israel-Hamas armed conflict,” with the possibility of uncovering “a perpetrator of core international crimes — such as genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.” This announcement sparked concern among dual Israel-Canadian citizen soldiers. Karmel wrote an in-depth piece on the topic and shares the soldiers' fears. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. A belief the cost of propping up retail crime advisors is money well spent – and that's from a key member of the advisory group. It's been revealed $500 thousand has been spent on the Retail Ministerial Advisory Group in the 102 days to June 30. Group Chair Sunny Kaushal told Heather du Plessis-Allan the group's coming in under budget, and money is required for their proposals. He says retail crime is costing $2.8 billion, and if laws are to change, they need to produce quality reports. Kaushal says the money's coming from the Proceeds of Crime Fund. Wind isn't just a breeze, it's also an agent of change. Not metaphorical change—but literal, seasonal, even cosmological change that moves through bodies, weather, and even geopolitics. The energies of nature are not only magnificent forces that sculpt landscapes. But also unfold within us as a kind of inner weather. In this conversation with Christine Cannon, we continue our exploration of the celestial influences that shape our lives—not just in theory, but how these influences manifest in the world around us, and in the clinic. Christine draws from the rhythms of the Five Movements and Six Qi to trace how this year's inadequate metal has influenced the first part of the year, and what to expect as we move forward.Listen into this discussion as we explore the implications of excess fire and runaway wood, the potential “revenge” of water, and the subtle influence of seasonal delay. We'll also investigate the partnership between Imperial and Ministerial fire in bringing ideas from the still void of inspiration into manifest reality. The Shaoyin and Shaoyang—there's a reason for why they're both considered to be pivots.

The principal of a Clare school for children with learning disabilities has dismissed a recent ministerial visit as a "tick-the-box exercise". Representatives from a number of schools nationwide have attended a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth centering on the proposed redesignation of schools for children with mild general learning difficulties. Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Special Education and Inclusion, Michael Moynihan, visited St Anne's School in Ennis recently where a number of issues relating to the sector were discussed. Principal of St Anne's School, Rose Marie Flanagan, says while the engagement was positive, the aftermath has been disappointing.
It's hoped the Shannon Airport Rail Link is one step closer to becoming a reality. It follows the inaugural visit from the Minister of State for International Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports Seán Canney to the Clare base yesterday, which focused on improving public transport links. According to the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation's latest Aviation Report, 40% of visitors flying to Dublin end up travelling West, while Shannon Airport welcomed over 2 million passengers last year alone. Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says this must be reflected with more accessibility.

There's another tool in the police toolbox for cracking down on crime. A retail crime prevention advocate says he's happy with proposed law sentencing changes. The Government's confirmed new proposals to increase penalties for shoplifting - including infringement fees, a new 'aggravated theft' offence, and prison sentences. Ministerial Retail Crime Advisory Group lead Sunny Kaushal says we need to create deterrents - and he wants it to be easier for police to prosecute shoplifters. There's excitement over expected changes to the way authorities deal with retail crime. Newstalk ZB understands Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith will be confirming shoplifting policy changes this week, relating to Retail Crime Ministerial Advisory Group recommendations. Group Chair Sunny Kaushal told Mike Hosking that the announcements are ones retailers across the country have been screaming out for. Kaushal says offenders believe police won't respond and the courts will let them go, so they're working to stop this sense of impunity. What happens when a child's life depends on a medication that costs nearly a million dollars per year? In this eye-opening conversation with Michael Mulligan of Mulligan Defence Lawyers, we take a deep dive into the tragic case of nine-year-old Charleigh Pollock from Langford, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder Batten disease.Mulligan walks us through the complex web of legislation governing medication coverage in British Columbia, revealing the stark truth about how these life-or-death decisions are made. Despite common misconceptions about universal healthcare, the reality is that medication funding falls under provincial jurisdiction through the Pharmaceutical Services Act. For expensive drugs treating rare conditions, the process involves a Drug Benefits Council making recommendations, but final decisions rest with government ministers and are primarily financial rather than medical. The most troubling aspect of Charleigh's case is that she had been receiving the $844,000-per-year treatment for some time before funding was abruptly discontinued. This withdrawal of established treatment raises serious legal questions that distinguish her situation from initial denials of coverage. Mulligan discusses a current groundbreaking case moving through BC courts that might provide a legal pathway forward, exploring potential arguments around negligence, Charter rights regarding cruel and unusual treatment, and judicial review of administrative decisions. What emerges from this discussion is a sobering reality: when politicians claim they "shouldn't interfere with medical decisions," they're being disingenuous. The system is explicitly designed to make politicians the final arbiters of these treatments after doctors make their recommendations. The criteria for deciding which children receive life-saving medications are, at their core, about money, raising profound questions about how we value human life in our healthcare system. Listen in and consider what changes might be needed to create a more just approach to rare disease treatment in Canada.Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the cases and legislation discussed.
