Honoured to have a very special guest as our latest Voice - Team GB Retired Paralympic Gold Medalist in rowing (Beijing Paralympics) 2008- Helene Raynsford. Helene has a truly rare perspective on navigating not only multiple very complex health conditions and living life as a wheelchair user at a young age, facing breast cancer, an ileostomy with a stoma...but how she used her mental training to win Gold in the Paralympic Games as a 'blueprint' to approach each new health challenge. Helene does an incredible amount of advocacy work that isn't always publicly visible; supporting multiple charities, being Chair of the Athletes Commission for the Paralympics GB, a Non-Executive Director for Sports England. Her career in public health reinforces her outreach work at trying to address major health inequalities that still exist - for example the fact that mobile MRI breast screening units are on the whole not wheelchair accessible. Such a humble, modest person who sets the gold standard of what genuine advocacy work is about, using her health conditions to truly help and support others for greater and lasting change. We are honoured to share her health journey as one of our Voices in the Scars of Gold campaign, and for Helene to be Patron to our charity and support our mission here at Mortal And Strong. This interview provides unique and new perspectives on how to prepare mentally for new health challenges and how to keep focused on the end goal (or finishing line). A gold medalist sharing her Scars of Gold, but more importantly a humble human being who has reflected a lot on what it is to be mortal and how to make the most of life and not be defeated by any health challenges.Mortal and Strong is a registered charity and presenting our debut campaign Scars of Gold. A campaign using art to shine the spotlight on women facing their own mortality - those affected at a young age by a life changing illness or disease. 100 artworks produced by artists across the country along with a powerful photography series ‘Scars of Gold' inspired by kintsugi. 100 Voices sharing messages of hope and strength through our podcast. Building a platform to provide health awareness, support and education to change the face of disease in young people. Founded by Dr Liz Murray. This month, we revisited the inspiring journey of Patricia Walsh, a Paralympic gold medalist and accomplished tech engineer who has overcome significant challenges and achieved remarkable success. Patricia's story is a testament to the power of resilience, focus, and determination. Here are the key leadership takeaways from my conversation with Patricia, optimized to help you build natural leadership strengths. Embracing Challenges to Foster Resilience Patricia faced the profound challenge of becoming blind at the age of 14. Instead of letting her disability define her, she embraced it as part of her identity and pushed herself to achieve what many thought was impossible. This relentless pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of her journey. Key Takeaway: Striving for excellence means embracing challenges and using them as stepping stones to reach your full potential. This mindset is crucial for anyone looking to build natural leadership strengths. Overcoming Adversity & Power Beyond Limiting Beliefs Patricia's journey is filled with instances of overcoming adversity. From completing over 20 marathons and two Ironman competitions to transitioning from a role at Facebook to a senior engineering manager position at the Lego Group, Patricia has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Key Takeaway: Overcoming adversity requires resilience, determination, and the courage to push beyond limiting beliefs. These qualities are essential for developing natural leadership strengths. Building Natural Leadership Strengths in Tech and Beyond Patricia has held significant roles in the tech industry, including her recent position at the Lego Group, where she oversaw several departments. Her leadership extends beyond managing teams; it involves creating an inclusive and supportive environment that values everyone's contributions. Key Takeaway: Effective leadership is more than just overseeing tasks; it's about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their best. This approach is vital to build natural leadership strengths in any setting. Achieving the Impossible Patricia's sports and professional achievements highlight her ability to achieve what many thought was impossible. She holds the world record in the Ironman Triathlon and has represented Team USA as a five-time national champion and seven-time international gold medalist. Key Takeaway: Setting and achieving ambitious goals can inspire others and demonstrate that determination can make the impossible possible. This ambition is a core component of natural leadership strengths. Focusing on Leadership Strengths and Talents A significant piece of advice Patricia shares, which resonates with my coaching philosophy, is to: "focus on your strengths and talents rather than weaknesses or handicaps." This mindset has been pivotal in Patricia's success both in her athletic and professional endeavors. Key Takeaway: To have the best life and career possible, focus on leveraging your strengths and talents instead of dwelling on your limitations. This focus is fundamental to build natural leadership strengths. The Importance of Asking for and Offering Help Patricia shared insights about the importance of knowing when to ask for help and not making assumptions about others' needs. She emphasized the value of clear communication and respecting personal autonomy, which is crucial in personal and professional interactions. Sabrina's Insight: "Effective support involves asking how to help and respecting the autonomy and preferences of others." This understanding is essential for anyone aiming to build natural leadership strengths. Authenticity in Leadership Values Being authentic to oneself is another critical lesson from Patricia's journey. Despite the competitive environments she has been part of, Patricia remains committed to her values of fairness and kindness. Key Takeaway: Authentic leadership involves staying true to yo...

Victoria Arlen is no stranger to hurdles. At age 11, the now-ESPN host developed two rare conditions known as transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. As a result, she quickly lost the ability to walk, speak, eat, and move. She slipped into a vegetative state, and her parents were told numerous times that they should “let go” and that their daughter would never be the same. Fast forward four years, and Victoria beat all odds to make a miraculous recovery. She returned to life, albeit in a wheelchair, and soon found success as an athlete scoring a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Paralympic games, as well as her dream job at ESPN — reporting for the X Games and Special Olympics. In today's episode, she talks about the biggest miracle of all: defying the odds yet again and after spending nearly a decade in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down, to learn how to walk — and ultimately dance and run. She talks about her stint on Dancing With The Stars, the non-profit she started with her mother to help others get a second chance at life, and how she stayed optimistic even in her darkest days. Ryan Neiswender's powerful message, shared during his inspiring TEDx talk titled "Loving What You Hate," revolves around the profound idea that our vulnerabilities can evolve into our most potent sources of influence and impact. When we no longer see our insecurities as weaknesses but as unique qualities that make us who we are, we can channel their energy into a force for positive change. Through his own example, Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Gold Medalist, World Champion, Disability Inclusion Activist, and TEDx Speaker, Ryan Neiswender, knows this truth firsthand. He shares invaluable insights on how we can transform adversity into opportunity, and challenges us to break free from self-imposed limitations.

When Meg Fisher went to college, she was a walk-on for the University of Montana's Division 1 tennis team, but was taken out of the sport and the life she knew when a catastrophic car accident left her in a coma. When her leg was amputated, it was the least of her doctors' worries. Most of them assumed that she would never be able to live independently, let alone walk, but Meg proved them (and herself) wrong, earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and becoming a 3x triathlon world champion and a multi-medal winning Paralympian at the 2012 and 2016 Games. More recently, she's been focused on bringing paracycling categories to gravel races and expanding resources for physically impaired people in under-served countries. In this conversation, Meg tells Payson about marking the 20th anniversary of the crash, accidentally melting one of her prosthetic legs at Rebecca's Private Idaho, and why she attributes "everything in her life" to a cattle dog named Betsy. She also talks about how meaningful it has been to be recognized within the cycling community, and being overcome with emotion when her teammates from the 2012 Paralympic Games came to cheer her on at Steamboat this year.

Co-captain of the US Men's National Wheelchair Basketball Team Steve Serio reflects on his remarkable career on the hardwood.
Jessica Long is an elite athlete with a jaw-dropping string of accomplishments and awards. The path to that lofty status, however, has not been without frustration. Along with her 29 Paralympic medals, Jessica has had to endure 25 surguries as a result of fibular hememila, a cogenital limb deficiency that led to the amputation of both legs below the knee. Born to teenage parents in Russia, Jessica also had to learn to forgive her birth mother for giving her up for adoption. Instead of succuming to the anger that she acknowledges characterized her early years, Jessica transformed the power of that anger into determination and used it to fuel her wildly successful career as a Paryalympic swimmer. Along with her own determination, Jessica credits her adoptive parents, Marylanders Beth and Stephen Long, and her Christian faith with making her the person she is today. This is Jessica's story and we're honored to share it on Mainstreet. The Mainstreet Podcast is sponsored by Your Pet AuPair! When Paralympic skiier Corey Peters sped to the medal podium, he did so in a ground-breaking sit-ski designed by engineers at the University of Canterbury. Corey took home two medals from the Beijing Paralympics - a gold in the Men's Downhill Sitting and silver in the Men's Super-G Sitting. In mid 2020, the university was approached by Snow Sports NZ to improve the aerodynamic design of Peters' standard, off-the-shelf sit ski. Sit skis are made up of a seat and suspension system mounted to a single ski. Mechanical Engineering Lecturer Dr Natalia Kabaliuk, along with three students used scaled down models, computer modelling and a wind tunnel to test out the design. Expecting to get drag down by one to two percent at best, the team decreased the drag of the ski by a whopping 10 percent - a design that's being described as "world leading." Dr Kabaliuk and Master's student Tessa Impey spoke to Kathryn Ryan about the project.
Dan Cnossen graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and became a Navy SEAL. He would deploy multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan and served as a platoon commander for Seal Team One. In 2009, on a night mission in the Afghanistan mountains, Dan stepped on an IED, losing both legs in the blast. He would later be awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor. Never one to shy from a challenge, Dan eventually earned a spot on the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Biathlon Team. The Harvard University graduate would return to the Paralympic Games in 2018, winning one gold, four silver and one bronze medal. He is now training to compete for Team USA once again, at the 2022 Paralympic Games. We talk with Dan about the sport of Nordic skiing, about getting outside, and the benefits of being in nature.

Sports allowed Ryan Neiswender to feel free. At an early age, he discovered wheelchair basketball and would receive a full scholarship to play at the University of Illinois, where he was named a 4-time All-American. He would then play the sport professionally in Europe and just a couple months ago, he would help Team USA secure its second gold medal in a row at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. He talks about how our differences make us unique and strong as well as the power of belief.
