It’s a Wests Tigers podcast collaboration, as Rob Bechara joins us from the Wests Tigers Life podcast. Rob lines up with Wests Tigers Podcast regulars Eddie Otto, Joel Helmes, and Steve Stretton to discuss a host of current Wests Tigers topics. These topics include Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson's comments regarding refereeing and how lower-placed sides seem to miss getting the rub of the green. The boys also nominate their most-improved 2025 Wests Tigers player, and our most important player so far this season. There's also a bit of a look ahead to try and assess the state of play for the Wests Tigers' 2026 team. Where are we well-covered for next season, and which positions are going to need further strengthening? Plus, Eddie introduces a quick-fire edition of Buy, Sell or Hold. Some of the topics include: Has Jerome Luai been worth $1.3 million per season? Has the media played a part in the club being so dysfunctional? Was Brett Hodgson the Wests Tigers' greatest ever fullback? Benji Marshall will be coaching the team in 2030? Who is the most underrated Wests Tigers player in history? Was Robbie Farah the best Wests Tigers captain we've had? All that and a whole lot more on this special bye-round/mid-season edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. Late Comeback Not Enough For Wests Tigers in Townsville

Wests Tigers Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2025 59:15

Things were looking pretty bleak for Wests Tigers fans after about an hour in Townsville. However, trailing by a significant margin, the boys managed to regain some respectability with a late surge that fell just four points short. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes, Garry Watson, Steve Stretton, and Nick Hayes try to make sense of the 32-28 loss. There were some worrying signs, there were some classic Wests Tigers-only moments, and then some real flair and potency in attack. So, where exactly are we as a football team? There's also a look at some of the promising performances from individual members of the team, including Starford To'a, Tony Sukkar, and Charlie Staines. But what about the new five-eight?! Heath Mason grabbed that number 6 jersey and did a lot right, both with the ball and in defence. So, what do with do with Latu Fainu this week? The boys try and answer that question on this edition of the pod. There are, of course, lots of 'One Word' submissions from members of the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum, including one that brings up a left-field coaching suggestion. 'Peter A' from the forum reckons we should make a coaching change and bring in the former Eels coach, Brad Arthur. Another discussion on the podcast circles the refereeing, and we ask the question - does Benji need to burn $10,000 to get some respect from the officials? Or, as some members of the pod believe, are we ultimately responsible for the way we get treated by the referee? There's also some good news from the lower grades with wins recorded over the weekend. The question is, is there anyone we can call on to replace the HIA-affected Alex Twal? Yes, it's another post-loss edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, but we hope you enjoy our take on things, and don't forget you can join the conversation now on the forum.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers didn't get flogged, but it was still a disappointing night for fans on Sunday. Taking on injury-hit South Sydney, there was hope our boys could keep that important 50% win record alive heading into the bye. It wasn't to be, though, with Souths getting home 22-12. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Steve Stretton and Eddie Otto to pull apart the most recent Wests Tigers Performance. Some of the key issues up for discussion include: Our lack of direction Our lack of impact Our poor execution Our lack of variation in most of our plays There's also the topic discussed that seems to be on most Wests Tigers fans' minds, and that is recruitment. Why are we watching a promising season slip away without strengthening some of the obvious weaknesses in the squad? There are a couple of positives on the agenda, though. It can be hard to find too many things to get excited about as a follower of the club right now, but we found a couple. These are, namely, the ongoing contributions being made by Sione Fainu and the impressive work of Tony Sukkar on Sunday evening. There's also a pat on the back for Charlie Staines and Sunia Turuva, too. We run through the many 'One Word' contributions from members of the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum, and Steve tells us about the Ambush event held before the match. That event was a little different, it included members of the rival Souths group, The Burrow. Did everyone get along? Steve has the details. Oh, and Eddie and Steve also fire their shots in a new round of calling out some rugby league columnists over their ongoing questionable behaviours. We didn't get the win, but we hope you enjoy this latest edition of the pod. Thanks for listening.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers head to Campbelltown Stadium to face the Bunnies on Sunday evening. And the question on everyone's lips is, will last Sunday's Storm shellacking derail our promising season? On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is in the host's chair and is joined by Steve Stretton and Declan McCutcheon. Steve was at AAMI Park in Melbourne for the game against the Storm, he gives us an eyewitness account of the murder! The boys also discuss Melbourne's differences compared to our club and team, both on and off the field. Naturally, there's a discussion on the pod about what those implications might be for such a poor performance, not just for the season, but for our team, coach, and club. Injuries are starting to hit. The boys also run through the latest injury report, with both good and bad news for Tigers' fans. The good news is that two strike players are on the verge of return, but the news may not be good for an important member of our forward pack. It's been a little bit, but 'the shredder' has returned. Eddie, Steve, and Declan predict who might be heading for a Concord exit at the end of the season. One topic of discussion that has featured heavily both in the media and on the socials in recent times is the future hooker strategy at the club. The boys predict what might happen with Api and TDS. Of course, there is a preview of the game against the Rabbitohs at Campbelltown on Sunday evening. This could also be one of the Wests Tigers' Podcast team members' final trip to the ground! Steve has a preview of the Ambush event being held before the game, and also has the questions for Yioti's Quiz. Let's hope we can regroup this weekend and come back with a post-victory edition of the podcast early next week! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Could this be the first time the Wests Tigers score three straight wins this decade? After beating the Sharks and Dragons, Wests Tigers have the opportunity to make it three wins in a row this weekend. The club hasn't managed to get a win in three consecutive rounds since 2018. But, it's going to be a tough monkey to get off our backs; the consistently successful Melbourne Storm stands in our way. Oh, and the game is down in the southern capital as well! What else is on this podcast? On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, we preview the big clash with the Storm, with opinions divided on our chances. Joel Helmes, Steve Stretton, and Declan McCutcheon also wrap up last weekend's win over St.George-Illawarra with all agreement that our boys have shown some impressive patches of play. There's a round of Buy, Sell or Hold on this mid-week pod with topics ranging from culture to depth, and Adam Doueihi. Talking about Doueihi also opens up discussion about the futures of Brent Naden and Starford To'a at the Wests Tigers. And, who wants David Fifita at our club? The giant edge second-rower looks set to leave the Gold Coast Titans imminently. Should the Wests Tigers be in the market for the big man? What might entice him to come to the Tigers? And what would he be like playing alongside Jerome Luai on our left edge? We try to answer all those questions. Speaking of questions, we also have Yioti's Quiz, and this week's quiz has us looking to answer some questions himself! Including, did you forget Shawn Blore and David Nofoaluma? Let's keep fingers and toes crossed for a win over the Storm this weekend so that not only can our beloved team cement itself in the eight, but that our big 400th episode is a post-victory edition!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wests Tigers made it two straight wins with a victory over the Dragons in Magic Round. Travelling to Brisbane after last Sunday's dramatic win over the Sharks, the Wests Tigers held on against the Red V 34-28. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto, Garry Watson, and Nick Hayes try to make sense of the Tigers' most recent performance. Some bits looked great, other aspects of our performance were less impressive, despite our boys coming away with two valuable points. The boys put the game under the microscope and looked at areas we can still improve, and the areas that have some of us confident we're going to go at least darn close to the finals. Another discussion point is the difference in the team now, after eight rounds, compared to the Tigers' team that started the year. Some of the individual performances from the Saturday night fixture also get a mention, including Jerome Luai, Jahream Bula, Charlie Staines, and our Terminator, Terrell May. Saints and Sinners, Eddie turns to God? Yes, the man upstairs gets a mention on this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast with Eddie thanking the all-mighty for his help in recent games! There are, of course, some great 'One Word' submissions from the many loyal and dedicated Wests Tigers fans on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. Stefano Utoikamanu also gets a mention this edition, that's ahead of our big clash with the Stoem this weekend (three in a row??). And Steve Stretton, who did have a leave pass for this edition of the podcast, has turned up in the newspapers after taking a well-known (maybe not overly respected) rugby league columnist to task. The Wests Tigers are out to make it two wins in a row when they meet the Dragons in Magic Round. Coming off that memorable win against the Sharks on Sunday afternoon, we meet the fellow top-eight aspirants in Brisbane on Saturday night. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Steve Stretton and Declan McCutcheon. The trio gives their thoughts on the "Leichhardt Oval miracle" and how the home fans helped get the boys across the line. Speaking of Leichhardt, Eddie raises the club's future stadium strategy and asks whether the advantage we seem to get at the ground is worth diminishing. There's also some debate among the boys on where to now with the Lachlan Galvin situation? Attention turns to the Dragons. The boys give a preview of the St.George-Illawarra clash with a particular eye on the importance of beating our joint-venture rivals. With the Storm next week, then the bye, there are mixed opinions on the pod about what a win or a loss could mean for the Wests Tigers' season. There are more changes at the Holman Barnes Group (will this ever end?). Steve gives an update on what's happening. Just remember, though, these are not changes or dramas (at this stage at least) at Wests Tigers! After an autumn break, 'Buy, Sell, or Hold' has made a triumphant return with Eddie coming up with some great conversation starters, including: Is Sunia Turuva the best Wests Tigers winger of all time? Did Sione Fainu milk that game-winning penalty against Cronulla? Penrith will miss the top eight this year? And that sneaky Steve has managed to find his way out of competing in Yioti's Quiz - he's taken over asking the questions! We hope you enjoy this mid-week edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. The Wests Tigers have scored a memorable win over the Sharks in Round 8 of the 2025 NRL season. Coming into the game as outsiders, the Wests Tigers managed to hold the Sharks to 18-all at the end of regular time. But in Golden Point, the boys found a way to win it, with Adam Doueihi kicking a penalty goal for the points! After eight rounds, the Wests Tigers have eight points, a 50% win ratio, and are just outside the top eight. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Nick Hayes and Garry Watson to look at the remarkable events that unfolded at Leichhardt. Some big issues to discuss. The two-point win raises questions around the rest of the season for the Tigers. For example, are there still more improvements to come? What could be tweaked to make us an even more potent football side, not just this year but into next season too? The individual performances on the day from guys like Sunia Turuva, Adam Doueihi, Starford To'a, Jarome Luai, Sione Fainu, Sam Fainu, and Terrell May. While 150-game warrior, Alex Twal, also gets a special mention, not just for his efforts yesterday, but for what he's brought to the Wests Tigers during his career. Naturally, the boys give their one-word submissions from the roller-coaster experience that was Tigers V Sharks, and there are plenty of submissions from members of the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum too. And we give our take on 'Richo's Meter" too, determining just where the Tigers are currently sitting on that Poor to Great scale. While there's also a little bit of player transfer news around that comes up for discussion, including the departure of Tim Johanssen from the club. But really, it's all about a dogged and determined Wests Tigers team that did us all proud at Leichhardt Oval yesterday.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The name of this Wests Tigers Podcast edition is simply two questions, and we have plenty more! Joel Helmes, Eddie Otto, Steve Stretton, and Garry Watson are on deck for this later-than-usual post-game edition of the pod. As we know, Wests Tigers succumbed to the Eels on Monday afternoon. That result leads us to some big questions that we try to answer, including: When it comes to big events like this, why don't we often turn up as a team? Should we play home games against the Eels at CommBank Stadium? Did the club make some mistakes last week in regards to Lachlan Galvin? There are plenty of other things that get discussed as well, including the lies and manipulation in the rugby league media. The Lachlan Galvin saga has continued this week, leading to this bonus edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. After a strong debate after the story broke on Monday night, followed by more analysis by Eddie and the boys on Wednesday, we now have this third pod for the week. We take a look at the press conferences held by Benji Marshall, then Wests Tigers' captains, Api Koroisau and Jarome Luai. Joel, Garry, and Nick give their thoughts on what was said and why we're starting to see the potential positives of testing out the coach and players' responses to a situation like this. Most importantly, comparing that response to what we have seen in the past from our club and playing group. Is this going to be the issue that finally helps turn Wests Tigers into a more focused and battle-hardened team? Let's make a statement against the Eels! We then turn our attention to the big Monday afternoon clash with the Parramatta Eels at CommBank Stadium. The Easter Monday fixture looks set to be a memorable encounter with the Wests Tigers no doubt out to tell the world they're bigger and better this year, with or without Galvin. The stats show Wests Tigers should be firm favourites, and the Eels have also lost a few players in recent days, but they do welcome back Mitch Moses for the game. We also look at the reshuffle of the Tiger's team, including the move to the halves for Adam Doueihi, and hopefully the remergence of Luai in Batman mode. The return of experienced centre Brent Naden also draws our attention. Big guests at the Ambush. Don't forget to get along to the free Ambush event before the game at CommBank, with two special guests ensuring it should be a memorable experience. Jeral Skelton will be a guest, as will Latu Fainu, and Garry will get the chance to interview both injured Wests Tigers stars. What we hear from Latu should be of particular interest!
