Remember Valentine's Day before the Parkland Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School? How many memories survive for the parents who lost children at that horrific event? One father, Manuel Oliver, has made a mission of continuing his son Joaquin's activism against gun violence and has filed an international lawsuit condemning the American laws and corrupt culture that allow gun violence like the Parkland Massacre to flourish. The suit is Joaquin Oliver vs. the USA for the right to live free from gun violence, brought by Global Action Against Gun Violence. In this episode, Manny talks to Radio GAG about the suit. Our In Memoriam is for Richard Henderson, who died not far from his home in Brooklyn, NY, standing up to bullies on the subway train. On the third anniversary of the Parkland Massacre, the White House issued a statement calling on Congress to enact "common sense" gun control. Join us today on Indigo Radio. This week we will be bringing forth the voices of students who participated in the March 14th National Walkout Day. 1 million students across the US walked out of their classes for marches and moments of silence at 10 AM in all 50 states and with international acts of solidarity as well. Students’ actions ranged from moments of silence for the 17 victims of the Parkland Massacre to rally’s and marches demanding that members of Congress stop taking money from the NRA and make decisions instead that contribute to ending gun violence. We will be speaking with students from Putney Central School, Riverside Middle School in Springfield, VT, Bronx Latin in NYC, and a student at BUHS about the walkouts at their schools, their thoughts about violence, and their thoughts on ending gun violence.
Unlike the most other mass shootings in the United States, the mass shooting that took place in Parkland, FL, has left the country in a state of anger that has amassed a movement for lawmakers to action against guns. This movement has mostly been led by high school students, which has been vocalized by the survivors of the massacre. Since then, there have been a number of those, who in the interest of upholding gun ownership, have accused these young people of being too young and too out of touch to be able to understand the context of what they are saying. Some have even gone as far as to build up conspiracy theories that these students are crisis actors, or activists who are paid by George Soros in order to push a liberal agenda. Tonight on TheUSAPodcast we will discuss the history of young people in activism and why it is so important for the younger generations to evoke serious change. What movements in the past have the young been able to sway? Why are the powers that be trying to trivialize the situation or treat young people as if they should have no say in governmental affairs? We also will be speaking the importance of what many of the survivors of the Parkland Massacre are doing as far as activism! These students have inspired many to say enough is enough and now is time to take action! This has led to a massive town hall in which these students had an opportunity to speak to lawmakers and make change! Tonight we will also be discussing the power of revolution in the midst of tragedy!
