Sergeant James Booker is a retired law enforcement officer with a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and integrity. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in law enforcement in Pensacola, Florida, Booker began his public service after leaving the Marine Corps and worked his way from the only true "prison" in Florida—Florida State Prison—to the progressive and challenging Broward County Sheriff's Department. Over the course of his career, Booker earned a reputation for steadfast principles, hands-on leadership, and unwavering commitment to doing what’s right, no matter the cost. His journey includes facing the harsh realities of the correctional system, mentoring future leaders like Raymond Hicks, and providing guidance and hope to those navigating profound personal and professional trials. Takeaways: Character and Standards Matter: Booker emphasizes that maintaining your values and upholding high standards, especially in positions of authority, defines your legacy and influence as a leader. Prisons Run on Complex, Unseen Dynamics: The real-life operations and power structures inside prisons are far more nuanced and disciplined than most people realize—offering a stark contrast to TV and movie depictions. Leadership is Service and Sacrifice: True leadership is shown through mentorship, unwavering support during adversity, tough but fair accountability, and always putting integrity above personal convenience. Sound Bites: "Most people think in Florida that there's a multitude of prisons. It's only one prison in the state of Florida... everything else is a correctional facility or work camp." "At the end of the day, that's all people can judge you on is your character. Nothing else. It's your character." "If something is wrong, just know it's wrong. Nobody can tell you it's right when you know it's wrong." Mick’s Quote: "How you do small things is how you do all things." On February 14, 2018, an active killer attacked the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida killing 17 people and wounding another 17 people.  The shooter then managed to flee the scene by slipping in with other students.  The shooter was apprehended without incident over an hour later.  In the months and years that followed this incident there was a firestorm of media coverage and legal actions directed at responding law enforcement agencies not only criticizing their response to the incident but also their failure to intervene with the shooter despite numerous red flags that preexisted the incident.  Additionally, a Broward County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer was charged, but acquitted, of child neglect and culpable negligence. There were also more than 50 civil suits filed resulting in millions of dollars in settlements as well as reassignments and resignations in the responding agencies. My guest today is Chief Clyde Parry.  On the day of this incident Clyde was the interim Chief for the neighboring City of Coral Springs Florida and was responsible for setting up the initial incident command post and assuming incident command for the event. Clyde began his law enforcement career with the Derry Borough Police Department near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1986. In May of 1987 he relocated to Florida and began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department where he worked his way up through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Chief of Police. Clyde was sworn in as the permanent Chief of Coral Springs PD just 19 days after this event. Books RecommendedWhy Meadow Died: The People and Policies That Created The Parkland Shooter and Endanger America's Students -Andrew Pollack (Author), Max Eden (Author) - ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1642932195 Contact Info Clyde Parry - boncly@bellsouth.net

The shooting came at a period of heightened public support for gun control that followed mass shootings in Paradise, Nevada, and in Sutherland Springs, Texas, in October and November 2017. Students at Parkland founded Never Again MSD, an advocacy group that lobbies for gun control. On March 9, Governor Rick Scott signed a bill that implemented new restrictions to Florida's gun laws and also allowed for the arming of teachers who were properly trained and the hiring of more school resource officers.[7][8] The Broward County Sheriff's Office received widespread criticism for its handling of the police response, both for not following up on multiple warnings about Cruz despite a lengthy record of threatening behavior and for staying outside the school instead of immediately confronting him.[9] This led to the resignations of several police officers who responded to the scene, and the removal of Sheriff Scott Israel.[9] A commission appointed by then-Governor Scott to investigate the shooting condemned the police inaction and urged school districts across the state to adopt greater measures of security.[9][10] On October 20, 2021, Cruz pleaded guilty to all charges and apologized for his crimes. ▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collierlandry/ ▶ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@collierlandry ▶ Twitter: https://twitter.com/collierlandry ▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/collierlandry ▶ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/collierlandry/ ▶ APPLE Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/moving-past-trauma/id1551076031 ▶ SPOTIFY Podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/465s4vsFcogvKIynNRcvGf?si=00da2b8e06864257 Learn more about your ad choices. In episode two of our Case Studies season, Just Science sat down with Crime Scene Technician Brian Turner and Detective Roberto Caceres from the Broward County Sheriff's Office to discuss a new methodology for processing fired cartridge cases. When a cartridge case is recovered from a crime scene, investigators must typically decide whether to swab it for DNA or process it for latent prints. The Broward County Sheriff's Office has developed a promising new technique that involves processing a cartridge case for both DNA and fingerprints, leading to more evidence available in shooting cases. Listen along as Brian and Detective Caceres describe what factors affect recovery of evidence on cartridge cases, how the M-VAC and the Recover LFT system are utilized in tandem to process for DNA and fingerprints, and case examples highlighting the success of this new method. Man, age 29, was taken into custody and accused with vandalizing a monument for victims of a school massacre by placing dead animals on the site. The Broward County Sheriff's Office reports that a crossing guard discovered a dead duck with its chest cavity sliced open on a bench in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Memorial Garden on July 20. According to reports, a dead raccoon was discovered on a school bench the day after, on July 21, and a deputy found a dead opossum on July 31. The Sheriff's Office claims that on July 30 at around 11 p.m., they used security footage to see a white Nissan with black rims drive up toward the memorial. A male driver was spotted getting out of the car and strolling up to the passenger side. It is said that he visited the memorial before leaving in his car. According to the Sheriff's Office, a deputy observed the identical Nissan on July 31 and conducted a traffic stop. Robert Mondragon, the driver, allegedly informed the deputy that he liked "the metal and blood scent that come from the dead animal" when asked why he had feathers and blood on the front passenger side floorboard of his vehicle. The Sheriff's Office claimed they learned that Mondragon had a "disturbing fixation with mass school shootings" after investigating the incident and discovering that he had purposely placed the dead animals on the memorial for the Parkland school shooting. Reportedly, authorities recovered his phone and discovered images of Mondragon holding the dead duck with its breast cavity cut open and an image of a dead raccoon on the floorboard of his vehicle. Police say that "Mondragon's facial tattoos match those of Tate Langdon, the character from 'American Horror Story' based on the Columbine High School shooting." Authorities searching Mondragon reportedly discovered writings and internet searches related to school shootings, methods for breaching steel doors, mass shootings, pipe bombs, and "slang words for killing officers." Mondragon allegedly followed the identical route that the MSD school shooter did on February 14, 2018—from Marjory Stoneman Douglas School to Walmart—two weeks before the end of the 2021-2022 school year. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mondragon was detained and charged with removing or disfiguring a tomb or monument, violating probation for battery and indecent exposure, and violating a risk protection order. He is still being held without bond. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! We keep it real with this episode.  We chat with retired Sergeant John Kelly of the Broward County Sheriff's Department.  John Kelly is a thirty-year veteran of the Broward County Sheriff's Office, one of the largest sheriff's offices in the country. John has been fortunate enough to have worked in and supervised the following units: Patrol, Investigations, K-9, Training, and for the past six years, the Motorcycle Unit. John has been involved in numerous critical incidents during his career. Early on, he was involved in a life changing fight for his life. Fresh out of the academy, John found himself in hand-to-hand combat with an armed, drug dealing, career criminal. This baptism of violence has contributed greatly in shaping John's passion and dedication to winning and realizing that we are responsible for our own survival and success. During his career, John has been tasked with the development and implementation of numerous tactical programs and initiatives. He has had tremendous success in creating a positive and lasting shift in the mindset of those he has stood before. John has received countless awards and honors during his career. The vast majority of those incidents had a recurring theme: John placing himself in harm's way so that others may live, running towards danger, fully aware of the potential consequences. First, John shares of his struggles with alcoholism, addiction and adultery.  And that's just the "A"s.  The daily stressors of being a first responder can be crippling if you allow it.  Now John's giving back by helping first responders cope with the effects of PTSD as a Law Enforcement Life Coach.  He has also authored a book to go along with his wellness program called Surviving Self-Inflicted Wounds - A Deputy's Life of Redemption. Of course we tackle some of those crazing calls including the suspects that "think" they are hiding in plain sight, the call where John almost shot himself and one of his most embarrassing moment on the job. In this episode I sit down with a dear friend of over 20 years, Captain Jeff Cirminello from the Broward County Sheriff's Office / Tamarac District. We  discussed the importance of leaders caring about their people and how  those leaders  can establish an environment that proactively addressed the employees physical and mental health needs. Jeff and his command have recently been the  focus of several mental health spotlight news stories featuring some really progressive wellness initiatives for his people. Jeff has literally created an environment, a room within the district office, where his employees can decompress, reduce stress , and better prepare themselves physically and mentally to deal with the next critical incident. The Zen Den has been positively impacting not only the deputies but  the residents of Tamarac in having a deputy in the community that is more intone with their physical and mental health. Sit back and enjoy the conversation, and yes don't worry I did bust his balls a little. Sergeant Glenn Topping served 25 years on the Broward County Sheriff's Department.  He served as a hostage negotiator, bodyguard, organized crime detective and field supervisor.  He was even featured in the inaugural season of COPS!  All of this AFTER serving an MP in the Army and working security in a well known southern Florida nightclub. Sergeant Topping is a very interesting man with lots of stories to share.  We just scratched the surface.  He tells his story of a family of shoplifters and funny chase that ensued.  We discuss a very unique method of transporting an extremely large person. Sergeant Topping also has a few books available.  Two of them are based on his time working as security at the south Florida nightclub and a murder that took place there that affected so many lives.  The list of bands that went through this club back in the day is amazing.  Even Johnny Depp spent many nights performing there in the early days. Here is one of the Instagram post that I asked John about: IG POST - Selfie you took - older post: “So this is what happens when a 53 year old makes an attempt to use social media without someone providing assistance . I'll be removing this account . Please follow me at lawenforcementlifecoach thanks for your patience” Other than social media and your mental health, what is one thing you require help with? What do you have zero patience for? Do you think the world would be better off without social media? [39:35] Random Seven – These are seven, totally random questions that I asked John. And they're all electronically created. What horror movie really freaked you out as a kid? Would you rather be sitting on a plane next to a screaming baby or someone with bad body odor? Who in your life do you always make time for? What apps on your phone are you on the most? Would you rather have a rewind button or a pause button on your life? What do you fear the most?
