This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Tara Dower. Tara shares her last 13 months which was amazing and very successful. Here is her list; attempted Benton MacKaye FKT in September of 2021. Injured myself badly. One month later I raced my first 100 miler called Uwharrie 100. Won for women. Raced my second 100 in Alabama called Blood Rock and came in 2nd overall behind Jeff Browning. Umstead 100 in April was my next 100 and placed 3rd women. Cruel Jewel was the next month in May and got 2nd woman. One month later went for the Benton MacKaye FKT again and smashed the overall record with sub 5 days. I think it was 4 days and 21 hrs and some change. Went on a little vacation to California a month later and finished backpacking the JMT. Started training for Run Rabbit and working hard to prepare for CO with different methods. The race went well and placed 2nd woman behind Annie Hughes with a huge 6 mile push at the end where I ran sub 8 minute miles and passed #2 woman. Whoa right?! also check out Tara's YouTube channel. What an amazing person. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm

Michael Pirovolakis, a four-year-old with the ultra-rare, neurodevelopmental condition SPG50 disease, earlier this year became the first person to be dosed with an experimental gene therapy developed to treat the disorder. The gene therapy was the result of a relentless pursuit by his parents, Terry and Georgia, to raise money and engage scientists and others in the development of a treatment for SPG50. We spoke to Michael's father and founder of CureSPG50 Terry Pirovolakis and associate professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center Steven Gray, about SPG50, the work to develop and advance an experimental gene therapy for the condition into the clinic, and why Pirovolakis says his work is not yet done.

Randy Thomas Lanier is a man with some seriously incredible stories. He is a professional race car driver and convicted drug trafficker from the United States. Yes, you read that correctly. Two endeavors that grew together to heights few have experienced. He is best known for his racing efforts in the mid-1980s, including winning the 1984 IMSA Camel GT title for the wholly independent Blue Thunder Racing team, placing 9th in the 1986 INDY 500, and becoming the Rookie of the Year at that same race. In 1988, Randy was arrested for marijuana smuggling and sentenced to life in prison without parole under the Continuing Criminal Enterprise statute (also known as the "Super Drug Kingpin" law). We talk to Randy about his late start in racing; how he ascended through the ranks so quickly; beating Porsche; a factory ride offer; how it came crashing down; and how he found purpose and happiness. GHIT 0344: Race Recap: GHIT's Ladies Team Raced In our 1993 Honda Civic Our first ever race was at NJMP's Thunderbolt track with 24 Hours of Lemons and seems to be a lifetime ago. We started out knowing nothing and that was probably being kind. At this year's event, we entered our 1993 Honda Civic with its full theme to thank the Everyone Racers podcast for all their help getting us started and helping us ever since. Vicki and Jennifer raced with two of the hosts from the Shifting Points podcast at this event. Audra had raced once with us last year and this was Jess's first ever wheel to wheel racing event. How did the event go? Did the ladies Dominate? Was the theme a bit overdone? This year we did it all for the Cookie. Until it was stolen. More details to follow soon. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/AllForTheCookies If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much. Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician
Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, I am are honored to have another amazing guest. Our guest today is Dorothy Roberts, who is the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law & Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania with joint appointments in the Departments of Africana Studies and Sociology and the Law School where she holds the inaugural Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights. She's also the founding director of the Penn Program on Race, Science, & Society. Dorothy is the author of several award-winning books including, Killing the Black Body, Shattered Bonds, Fatal Invention, and Torn Apart, coming out soon. Recent recognitions of her work include 2019 Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees at Rutgers University, 2017 election to the National Academy of Medicine, 2016 Society of Family Planning Lifetime Achievement Award. Her TED talk on, “The problem with race-based medicine.” has had over 1 million views. Dr Roberts tells us about her background, growing up in Chicago and how she pursued her interest in social justice. We learn what race-based medicine is and why it is such a big problem. Dorothy shares a story about a clinical trial she participated in and why it seemed so unscientific to use race as a variable. We find out who Dr. Samuel Cartwright was, and why he is so important to understanding the role that racial medicine has played over time in America. Dorothy discusses the impact that diagnostic tools being used in medicine today that use automatic race correction have for black patients based on false assumptions. We learn why it is so important when speaking to medical students and physicians to ask why they are using race when they should be looking at genetics. We discuss her book, Fatal Invention, that is used by incoming medical students across the country, as well as her new book coming out in April, Torn Apart, which is about racism in the child welfare system.
