Who needs Hallmark Christmas, when you have the real life magic of John Patrick Matthews and the Rock Boat? Listen to how John's dreams persevered tragedy on this 3rd Episode of The BoatCast Season 2!!!Integral to John's story has been his love of music, particularly perennial Rock Boaters, The Alternate Routes. When John's wife passed away after their first TRB, he initially found it too hard to embrace music until he had the courage to board TRB XVIII. While on-board, he joined The Alternate Routes to play a song dedicated to his late wife, Linda. His love of playing was rekindled and he was inspired to write an album. Over the pandemic, he took lessons with guitar virtuoso, Eric Donnelly (of The Alternate Routes) which led to him taking the plunge and creating his own album. All of his blood, sweat, and tears culminated in his release of Hugs and Handshakes in 2021. Join us as John walks Chris, Eammon, Mark - and special guest Eric Donnelly - through his journey (including an honest assessment of the recording process) to make his dream come true. He will share how with minimal effort you can reproduce this model in your own community to establish connections and turn strangers into relationships.Jonathan Heisey lives in Pueblo, Colorado, and will be sharing about his interactions in ministry with international students at their local college. Learn how he is stewarding this crisis as an opportunity for the advancement of the Kingdom. An interactive question-and-answer period follows.
After a super-fun first round, the late crowd shuffled in for a second round of Bar Bands banter. This time around, it was a celebration of some of David's formative years in front of the stage and listening in his bedroom. This included Hurstville's own Patrick Matthews - founding member of The Vines and bassist of Youth Group - as well as Children Collide frontman Johnny Mackay and ARIA-award winning veteran vocalist Sarah Blasko. There's a lot of history here - some well-remembered, others best forgotten. It's all a lot of fun, though. Besides, arguably no other podcast this year will take you from lunch at Warren Ellis' house to The Big Banana to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Special thanks to Kristy Pinder, Betty Fink, Chris Sheppard and Roly Elias. Recorded live at The Vanguard in Sydney on October 25, 2020. Mixed and engineered live by Anieke Robinson. Post-production and editing by Paul McWhirter. Additional editing by David James Young. Sarah Blasko appears courtesy of Look Out Kid. Johnny Mackay appears courtesy of Spinning Top Music. The Vines: The foundation of The Vines can be traced back to the southern suburbs of Sydney when Craig Nicholls met Patrick Matthews and David Olliffe in 1994 and started a band called Rishikesh. The name kept being misspelt wherever it was mentioned, so Craig suggested to change the name to ‘The Vines’ in honour of the band that his father played in back in the 60’s, also called The Vynes. 2001 would be the year that things started to fall into place for the band. Travelling to Los Angeles to record their debut album ‘Highly Evolved’, they had record labels climbing over each other to get the band’s signature. The album came out in July 2002 and music publications world wide were holding the band up as “the new saviours of rock”. Their highly anticipated 2nd album came out in March 2004 under the title ‘Winning Days’ and had mixed reviews from critics and fans at the time. After recording their first two albums in the USA, the band decided to record the next record in their hometown, which came out in 2006 under the title, Vision Valley. They went back to the States to record 2008’s Melodia and settled back in Australia for the recordings of Future Primitive and Wicked Nature. 2017 will see the release of their 7th record, titled ‘In Miracle Land’. Recorded at the Valley Fiesta in Brisbane on the 29th of October 2016. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot. Mixed by Luke Thomson. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 4th of June 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
