We remain off the boards for one more week, to discuss not a Target Doctor Who novelization, but rather a new publication from Panini Comics. It's The Return of the Daleks (purchase link: here), a compilation of the Doctor-less backup strips from the earliest days of Doctor Who Weekly/Doctor Who Monthly/DWM. The compilation features commentary from Paul Scoones -- who joins us this week to discuss not only this new book, but also the TSV novelizations, high-quality fan-made novelizations of five 1970s/'80s Doctor Who TV serials which, for rights reasons, were never novelized by Target during the line's original run. This week is our fourth and final podcast looking at the making of the new content for the Season 15 blu-ray. Dave's back, and he and Kenny discuss the covers of the Target novelisations - and rank them - before they're joined by this week's guests. Dr Matthew Sweet pops in to talk about the In Conversation chats (yes, we know - there's something meta about interviewing the interviewer) and we conclude our look at the special features with Paul Scoones, telling us how he works on the information text - in this case, for The Horror of Fang Rock. Addendum: In this episode, we state that it was Richard Bignell who learned that it was April Walker who was originally cast as Sarah Jane Smith - it wasn't, it was David Brunt. Our apologies to David for this error. (This week's guest theme - What if Kraftwerk did a Doctor Who Theme?, by George C Music)

Why are there two novelizations of RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS – and why is only one of them any good? This time we discuss the fan version of the novelization with its author, Paul Scoones, to find out what led to the creation of this version, why it took so long for an official version to come out, and why the Daleks are doing what they're doing in this story. (We only answer two of those questions in a satisfactory way, just so you know.) We're back - and it's definitely about time! Our seventh season is a shorter run than normal, as we bring you some episodes which tie in with the Doctor Who 60th anniversary, winter and Christmas. We begin with a look at Endgame, the first Doctor Who Magazine comic strip featuring Paul McGann's Doctor. Ben relays Paul Scoones' suggestion that the ship's captain may have been a nod to the Equinans, from "The Wreckers!", a 1975 Who story in The TV Comic. David notes that with the inclusion of Flux and other pieces of the Chibnall canon, RTD is removing the Bobby Ewing retcon, as Ben puts it, that the last 13 years were all a dream. This podcast concludes with a lively discussion of The U.S. Air Force Song, which was featured not only in this story's title, but also referenced musically. Opening music is "Silver Caravan" composed by Tim Clark and closing music is "The U.S. Air Force Song" also known as "Off We Go". We recorded this episode on 5 December 2023.

Hello! For a month where we approached this episode thinking, "What on earth is there to talk about (aside from our monthly feature)?" a surprising amount dropped in the week before we recorded and we respond in kind. Today's episode – broadly – covers: NU-WHO: Bradley Walsh is strongly rumoured to be Jodie Whittaker's companion in Series 11. Who is he? What's he been in? How might this play out in terms of a young-looking Doctor with a much older companion? CLASSIC WHO: A new version of Shada is on the way. Rob can barely contain his boredom. Is it needed? How will it look? So many questions. NU-WHO: Brand-new commentary on Jodie Whittaker from Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies. Jodie's also been getting around some radio stations. NU-WHO: Rumours of Jenna Coleman appearing in the Christmas special remain just that for now - rumours. However a picture of the new Ben Jackson appears and pleases both Rob and Dave in terms of his likeness. CLASSIC WHO/NU-WHO: Red White and Who: The Story of Doctor Who in America was released earlier this week and Rob and Dave had an advance copy with many of the chapters in it. They talk about the book and US fandom. CLASSIC WHO: August 29 is the 30th Anniversary of Dave's first Doctor Who club meeting that he attended with his Dad, aged 7. Rob realises, on air, that 1987 was when he attended his first fan event, aged 12. CLASSIC WHO/NU-WHO: Rob gives a podcast shout-out to I'll Explain Later & Complete Menagerie. He also mentions Progtor Who recently having it's third birthday and notes that Who Wars (which is the father of today's Doctor Who Show), first went out on Sept 7 2014; almost three years, too. CLASSIC WHO: Dave's been watching the Hartnell classic, The Ark, and finds the message it sends being extremely relevant for today. NU-WHO: Rob calls for submissions to our "Nu-Who's Beryl Reid" episode, set for September 24. "Everyone talks about Classic Who and stunt casting... but who are the celebrities in Nu-Who that really made you sit up, both for good reasons and bad?!?" Get your submissions in ASAP. CLASSIC WHO/NU-WHO: Our main topic for this episode is Doctor Who stories that listeners (and us) either didn't get or just didn't enjoy as children, but which we really enjoy as adults. These are almost all classic era stories, but one Nu-Who bolter makes it through at the end. Features emails from Mark Smith and Jim Hall in addition to listener suggestions from: Jim Hall, The Polis Box, Mark Watts, Isaac Dakin, James Stoker, Ganesh Projoy, Jon Arnold, Brendan Jones, Brian Dobson, Paul Scoones, spankybackpack, John Hole, Dave Ringo, Dylan Rees, We Are Cult, David Lancaster, Hayden Gribble, Christopher Bryant, and The Ginger Luke. Thanks for your thoughts! FINALLY: The second half of our mega email from Jim Hall, discussing the Doctor Who Magazine comics in the era of Tom Baker's final season. Thanks everyone, as always, for listening. We greatly appreciate your ears, your emails and your tweets and, if you really want to make our day, why not leave us an iTunes review sometime? It really helps us get noticed on there. See you in September for both our monthly show and the first in a new series of 'Alternate Galaxies' episodes where, for our first episode, we'll put Buffy the Vampire Slayer under the spotlight and let you know why, as a Doctor Who fan, you might be interested in watching it (if you haven't watched it already). For those of you who are unaware, Paul Scoones is the man behind the legendary New Zealand Doctor Who fanzine, Time Space Visualiser. He's also one half of the team who tracked down a missing episode of Doctor Who - specifically 'The Lion', a missing episode of the William Hartnell story 'The Crusade', back in 1999. He's the author of the excellent 'The Comic Strip Companion', dealing with Doctor Who comics, and he's also written the infotext subtitles on many of the classic era Doctor Who DVDs you've watched. Rob sits down with Paul and asks him to choose an item from his extensive collection for the Whotiques Roadshow. Paul selects a complete set of Doctor Who Target novels with a delightful twist... they're all in hardback. This leads the two on a discussion of the Target novels in general, what attracted Paul to the hardbacks, their value, plus what came later in the form of the Virgin New Adventures and Missing Adventures, BBC 8th Doctor and Past Doctor ranges, right up to the current BBC New Series Adventures.

In ye olden days, when fans went to meetings riding on the backs of pterodactyls there was…the (PAPER) FANZINE! One of the very best of these was none other than TSV, the august fanzine from across the ditch in New Zealand. Mark and Rob chat with TSV editor Paul Scoones. In between bouts of inhaling duplicator fumes, we reminisce about producing fanzines before and after desktop publishing era. We examine how some contributors ascended to the realm of the professional novelist and put the internet in the dock for once again killing something that is fine and previous – damn its eyes! Plus we also touch on Doctor Who comics and Paul's definitive history of them in his book and his involvement in the recovery of The Lion and his work on the DVD Production notes. Paul Scoones's website: Features a blog and additional pages with details about the Comic Strip Companion and the DVD production information text. www.paulscoones.com TSV / New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club: Includes Archive section featuring material from many past issues of TSV, and the fan novelisations. The discussion forum is still active. www.doctorwho.org.nz Retrospace Sci-Fi Collectables: Auckland-based shop (with shipping worldwide) owned and managed by Paul and his wife Rochelle. www.retrospace.co.nz The Comic Strip Companion 1964-1979: Paul's book about early Doctor Who comics, available from Telos Publishing www.telos.co.uk/product/the-comic-strip-companion-1964-1979/

Episode 39 - Before podcasts, before cosplay, before the discovery of time travel, there was…NOTHING! Well, not entirely. In ye olden days, when fans went to meetings riding on the backs of pterodactyls there was…the (PAPER) FANZINE! A shocking amount of news made its way from the wilds of the Internet to the fevered brains and out of the fetid mouths of the Three Who Rule this week, including the infamous "ToyFairGate," where canny spies noted BBC posters announcing….somewhat sparse plans for the anniversary year of Doctor Who. The din of fan outrage was such that it almost drowned out announcements of new action figures, soundtracks, special edition DVDs and other delicious morsels. But controversy and action figure portfolios aside, this week also marks an interview with Paul Scoones, Doctor Who historian and author of "The Comic Strip Companion: 1964-1979" which chronicles decades of Doctor Who comic strips. Scoones is also well known for his deep production knowledge, expressed through the medium of subtitles on Doctor WHo DVDs. Steven spent the better part of an hour delving deep into Scoones work with him, and now we bring that interview to you. And remember, in less than three weeks Radio Free Skaro will open Gallifrey One with our live show, "The Ambassadors of Death!" With a guest lineup of Sylvester McCoy, Philip Hinchcliffe, Bernard Horsfall, Neve McIntosh, Richard Hope and Dan Starkey, it's sure to be ninety minutes of fun, facts and…a return guest appearance from Chip, the Two Minute TIme Lord! Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
