This month, Kyle and Erik have good news and bad news. The bad news is we have to talk about "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" and "The Power of Three." The good news is we won't have to talk about a Chris Chibnall script for like five more years. Anyway, these two episodes certainly aren't the worst things ever, and in many ways they set the stage for what Chibnall would do during his time as showrunner, for good or ill. One thing we can say for these stories is that they're imperfect, to put it mildly.
Here we go folks - a crashing plane, World War II, Ada Lovelace with a machine gun. Lovely Joe Ford encourages host Toby Hadoke to stop worrying and learn to love the Chibnall era ... and Toby tries very hard. How he does ansd if he succeeds... well, that is up to you :) There's certainly plenty to talk and think about though: especially when some of Joe's favourite things are your host's least favourite. Is it all gonna kick off, or will they just stop it all to sit down and talk through their problems? At length. Building on episodes 102, 103, and 104, we continue to explore the deep impact of these challenges. We begin by examining the need to address both individual and systemic factors, emphasizing the importance of cultural shifts within medical environments and advocating for meaningful systems change. As the episode concludes, our experts highlight actionable steps medical schools can take to better support mental health, including fostering open dialogue, ensuring accessible resources, and creating a culture of vulnerability. In memory of Dr. Jack Rudell, we close with a piece of his music—a poignant reminder of the personal nature of this issue and the critical need to keep every trainee's light shining. Description of Series DWDI Special Series: Suicidality in Medical Training dives into the critical conversations around mental health, well-being, support systems, and the intense pressures faced during medical training. Through the power of storytelling, the series intertwines these broader themes with the deeply personal story of Dr. Jack Ruddell, a promising medical student who tragically died by suicide. Jack's journey—his strengths, struggles, and the complexities leading to his untimely death—forms the emotional core of this five-part series, giving voice to the loved ones often excluded from these conversations. Alongside Jack's story, the series incorporates expert insights and data from the literature, offering a human perspective on burnout, depression, and suicide among medical trainees. With a commitment to improving mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around seeking help, the series presents a novel approach by centering personal narratives alongside expert analysis. It also explores actionable strategies for improving medical training environments and highlights the importance of institutional responses after a loss by suicide. Our mission is to reduce shame, encourage help-seeking among medical students struggling with depression, and ensure that every medical school is aware of the postvention resources offered by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Stable Chat with Tony Chibnall I dropped into the stables of Chibnall racing and caught up with Tony for a chat about well just about everything.
Are we in the Steven Moffat era because right now we have Peter Capaldi and Karen Gillan in Doctor Who haha just joking we know we're in the Chibnall era, wait what? A pretty average episode, but lets be real it's spectacular because Peter Capaldi is in it and he's fabulous. #DoctorWho #DavidTennant #CatherineTate #DocWhoPod0:00 Start of Podcast0:38 Who (K)news02:24 Partners In Crime ReviewListen on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3BfFOJCKeDUM83yYQkbx19?si=9b14dcefa60b45b0Listen on Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/ae/podcast/docwhopod/id1693968810Listen on RSS.com - https://rss.com/podcasts/docwhopod/Follow us on insta - https://www.instagram.com/docwhopod/Follow us on TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@docwhopodFollow us on Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/docwhopod
Doctor Who fans clearly went outside to touch grass... and they never came back. The +7 day viewing figures for Ncuti Gatwa's first few episodes are ABYSMAL, and worse than Jodie Whittaker's last season. The Radio Times kept assuring us that viewership was going to be FANTASTIC once the +7 figures rolled in. Doctor Who is now WORSE under Russell T Davies than it was before under Chibnall, according to Screen Rant. They're claiming that RTD has now made the canon even muddier due to the "bi-generation" nonsense and that it's actually alienating even more fans. Did you know that Jodie Whittaker SAVED Doctor Who with her ratings? Because she didn't. Did you know that the BBC is denying any "woke" bias in its drama programming, including Doctor Who? Stop giggling. How about Doctor Who being a massive hit in streaming... the ENTIRE series, that is. Not just the Christmas special. Yeah, the Doctor Who damage control has begun. Additional Context: Jodie Whittaker's casting as the first female Doctor in the long-running BBC series "Doctor Who" was a historic and controversial move. Her arrival marked a significant change in the series, not only because of the gender switch for the iconic character but also due to the shift in the show's storytelling approach under the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall. The tenure of Whittaker as the Doctor has been a subject of debate among fans and critics. While some praised the series for its progressive casting and attempts to freshen up the narrative, others criticized it for various reasons, including perceived declines in writing quality and audience ratings. There were also discussions about the show taking a more "woke" approach under Chibnall and Whittaker, focusing more on contemporary social and political themes, which some viewers felt was a departure from its traditional storytelling style. The tenure of Chris Chibnall as the showrunner for "Doctor Who," particularly during the era of the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, saw a decline in viewership ratings. Initially, Whittaker's debut as the Doctor in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" garnered high ratings, with about 11 million viewers, reflecting significant interest in the first female Doctor. However, as the series progressed, there was a notable drop in viewership. For instance, the Series 12 finale "The Timeless Children" achieved 4.7 million viewers, and "Legend of the Sea Devils" almost became the lowest-rated episode in the show's history with 3.5 million viewers. Several factors contributed to this decline. Chris Chibnall's writing and direction of the show received mixed responses from audiences and critics. Some episodes under his tenure were perceived as weak and confusing, lacking the coherence and character development expected by fans. As for streaming success, "Doctor Who" has been a popular series on various streaming platforms, with its extensive history and fanbase contributing to its continued relevance. The entire series, encompassing multiple Doctors and eras, has been a draw for audiences, not just specific episodes or specials. "As a piece of entertainment it's just not good enough". Sean discusses the Doctor Who Christmas Special (2023). After deciding to give the special a chance, he was left feeling very underwhelmed. Discussion Points: -The waste of the goblins. -The poor pace of the show. -Sean compares this episode to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Final Destination (2000) and Hugh Grant in the 1990's. -The small scale of the episode. -The cardinal sin of film/television is making something boring. -The squandering of interesting ideas. Raised Questions: -Why is RTD trying to emulate Moffat's writing? -What was the point in all the pointless time-jumps? -Remember engaging Doctor Who stories? -Why is this era tripping over itself to validate the Chibnall era? -Do they expect people to actually flock to this? We discuss Wild Blue Yonder, the middle story of the 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who and share our thoughts on Russell T Davies latest adventure for the Doctor and Donna Noble. Ben relays Paul Scoones' suggestion that the ship's captain may have been a nod to the Equinans, from "The Wreckers!", a 1975 Who story in The TV Comic. David notes that with the inclusion of Flux and other pieces of the Chibnall canon, RTD is removing the Bobby Ewing retcon, as Ben puts it, that the last 13 years were all a dream. This podcast concludes with a lively discussion of The U.S. Air Force Song, which was featured not only in this story's title, but also referenced musically. Opening music is "Silver Caravan" composed by Tim Clark and closing music is "The U.S. Air Force Song" also known as "Off We Go". We recorded this episode on 5 December 2023.
Doctor Who is back! Both in the sense that we got our first new episode in over a year this weekend, and, more importantly, in the sense that we got our first new good episode since 2017! This week marked the 60th anniversary of our favorite TV show here at The Weekly Stuff Podcast, and brought with it the first in a series of specials reuniting David Tennant and Catherine Tate, writer/showrunner Russell T Davies, composer Murray Gold, and more, and the resulting episode, “The Star Beast,” is indeed a cracking good time, and a tremendous return-to-form after the Dark Ages ushered in by Chris Chibnall since 2018. Sean talks about finally catching up with the end of the Chibnall/Jodie Whittaker run at the top of today's show, then we talk about some our favorite stories we've been revisiting for the 60th anniversary, and finally we've got a spoiler-filled review of “The Star Beast.”Enjoy! A deep dive into Ryan Sinclair and disability representation. What is dyspraxia? How was Ryan's dyspraxia depicted in Doctor Who? How should representation be approached? How does Ryan's characterisation resonate with people with dyspraxia? How do infantalisation, cyclicality, relationships with time, and narrative stasis play into all this? All these sorts of questions are explored in a thorough journey through Ryan's time across Chris Chibnall's era of Doctor Who, examining every clip relevant to Ryan's dyspraxia, along with script excerpts, relevant articles, and more. This is a cumulative analysis of Ryan's time on the show from authentic perspectives from fans with dyspraxia, starting with a wide-ranging discussion on dyspraxia and representation, then moving into an examination of relevant episodes and scripts. The original revelation of the Doctor's origins was a slow burn: It took Doctor Who six seasons to finally give concrete answers to who he was and where he came from. But after the landmark reveal at the end of The War Games, going back to Gallifrey seemed to be an exercise in diminishing returns for the show. True, The Deadly Assassin gave a compelling new perspective on Time Lord society, though if you look at what came after — Arc of Infinity, The Trial of a Time Lord, and even Hell Bent — the Time Lords get blander and weirder, with shifting motivations that are forgotten about when it's inconvenient. The greater point is that Doctor Who seemed oddly unsure of what to do with the most important planet in the cosmos, and one could make a solid case that it was at its best when it was simply gone — destroyed in the Time War but remembered for everything it represented to the show and its central character. Now that it's gone again in the post-Chibnall era, is that necessarily a bad thing? Is Doctor Who stronger or weaker with an active Gallifrey, full of Time Lords watching the universe to ensure it plays by their rules? And should the show bring it back — again? Well this is a first! The only Jodie Whittaker/Chris Chibnall adventure to thus far be given the Happy Times... treatment, and it's one set in a haunted house at the birth of a literary classic. Host Toby Hadoke is nervous about this: not as familiar with the newer stuff as he is with the old, and not always the most comfortable traveller on the Chibnall express. But guest Steven Schapansky (contender for the title of THE Doctor Who podcaster, so prolific and high quality is his output) is a good guy and he's bound to make the journey a smooth one... who knows, Toby might suddenly go back and watch them all now. Ben returns from Patagonia with news of Ryan Sinclair, and also to discuss Ascension of the Cybermen and Revenge of the Cybermen with Mark and a returning Dylan Rees from Doctor Who: Too Hot For TV. In a sprawling discussion, they discuss Chris Chibnall's troubling obsession with throwing people from cliffs, pitch a Glitter Gun origin show to Disney+, defend the silly Cyber-drones, and revisit Wookie Hole to discuss the Curse of the Revenge of the Cybermen.ALSO: Ben tackles the socio-political impact of the First Cyber War, an expansive history of Edinburgh's car boot fairs, the longest rally in Degsey's Ding-Dong Ping-Pong history, and a terrible Irish accent. Rah Rah Rasputin meeting with the Doctor and team. Old friends, new regenerations; and a pleasant surprise to the end of the Chibnall era. Listen to what the Whovian Review crew has to say, and let us know your thoughts.
The Fourteenth Doctor's first story is out, over a year before their actual TV specials air. Meanwhile, lots of new topics (and debates) are cropping up as Doctor Who transitions from Chibnall's era to the second era of Russell T Davies. So we discuss 14's first story, future furor, 13 to 14's costume debate, Disney & doomsaying, pre-emptive storytelling, fans feeling scorned, ‘sanctity' of regenerations, novelty & familiarity, erasure & overshadowing, era liminality, & more.… Continue reading →
Chibnall's era is over. How did it end? Degeneration, past possessiveness, holographic agency, character arcs, worshipped iconography, emotional incuriosity, actors as museums, literalised toxicity, and companion therapy are just some of the topics we discuss, as we chew over the final episode of the Thirteenth Doctor's era.… Continue reading →
"TAG, YOU'RE IT!"Like many others, Doctor Who is a show that Alec and Brian have years of nostalgia and love for, even at its worst. While the latter hasn't caught up on the later seasons, Alec has stayed throughout the Capaldi and Whittaker eras, the latter being the rockiest in the show's revival when it comes to consistency and quality. However, with The Power of the Doctor being a surprise hit amongst fans, and with the bright future of the show just within grasp, the duo decided to watch the Thirteenth Doctor's last hurrah together! Tune in and sync up as Alec lore dumps to Brian about all the controversy in the Chibnall era in between gushing about the Master's funny little dance!
Well, friends, we've all had a week to rewatch and process our feelings about The Power of The Doctor (as well as all the news that dropped right after that aired)! This time we're going to spend quite a bit looking at this adventure, what it means to us, how well it caps off the Chibnall era & Jodie's run, and also talk a bit about what the future holds (and also gripe a little about how long it'll be before we have some new Doctor Who on the telly again).

On the one hundred and second episode of Reality Bomb, we're making a deep dive into Chris Chibnall's tenure as Doctor Who's showrunner and discussing the good, the bad, the ugly and the hopeful about Chibnall's reign with Lacy Baugher-Milas, KatyBeth Schmid and Priya Deonarain. We're also discussing pirates, comedy and Doctor Who fans' not-so-secret anxieties when legendary casual fan Max Kashevsky brings Douglas Adams debut story The Pirate Planet to the Gallery of the Underrated. Plus, Joy Piedmont talks about change and Doctor Who, and in a post-apocalyptic world, lonely Doctor Who fans wait for any sort of news.
The floodgates of Doctor Who recording news were opened with the casting announcement of Jasmin Finney as Rose mk 2 and the return of David Tennant as the Doctor and Katherine Tate as Donna. We speculate about what changes RTD has in store for the viewers and lament the end of the Whittaker era and the overall lack of buzz during the Chibnall era. Opening music is "Hanging on the Tablaphone" and closing music is "All The Strange, Strange Creatures" both composed by Murray Gold. We recorded this episode on 17 May 2022.
The End of the Whittaker Era/The Gatwa Era BeginsWe have a new Doctor!Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the Fourteenth Doctor, starting in 2023 under returning showrunner Russell T. Davies. We're joined by Richard (@CleverDickFilms) to talk about what we can expect in the "RTD2" era. However, we don't forget that we still have a Doctor to say goodbye to. Fans have been teased by what awaits the final appearance of the Thirteen Doctor in the BBC centenary special. How will we leave Jodie Whittaker's Time Lord and her companions, Yaz and Dan? Where do we think Chris Chibnall will take us? Let us know what you're excited about for the remaining Whittaker era and the upcoming Gatwa era.Note: This podcast was recorded before the news was released about David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning to Doctor Who next year, in some mysterious capacity, as the Doctor and Donna Noble.

With one more episode of Jodie Whitakker's Doctor Who run to go, we review Legend of the Sea Devils, an episode that promises but doesn't quite deliver. Christian Cawley and James McLean explore the episode's high and low points, and discuss the impact of the "Next Time" trailer. They also consider where Doctor Who might go post Chibnall. Will RTD go "full MCU" on the show, and detach it from everything that has happened so far - starting from scratch in a new universe, perhaps - or will it be a more tradition, soft reboot. Click play for in-depth discussion and terrible use of sound effects.
I'm joined once again by proper Whovian Chris Cassell as we discuss the latest Doctor Who episode. We cover the Chibnall era, ships in Who and the infamous Myrka!
