D.C. trip included Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Day will hold added meaning for 82 members of the Haldane High School junior class following a four-day trip to Washington, D.C. The first three days of the March trip included visits to the U.S. Capitol, the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, the September 11 Memorial and Museum, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Smithsonian Institute. On the final day, the group traveled to Arlington National Cemetery. It is there that Rhys Williams and a few classmates visited the grave of his grandfather, Preston Williams. Preston Williams' military service included two Army tours during the Vietnam War. In May 1967, as commander of Company C, 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, and just short of his 25th birthday, Williams was in combat for nine straight days. During a two-hour firefight, he moved from position to position, directing supportive fire — gallantry that earned him a Silver Star. He was also awarded a Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars and other commendations during his service. Williams died in June 2024 and was buried at Arlington with military honors. Rhys said he remembers his grandfather's funeral vividly, including the 21-gun salute. "I realized the impact he had on others, how he meant a lot to so many people beyond our family," Rhys said. On March 27, he revisited the burial site. "I wanted to see it again," Rhys said. "I felt very proud of my grandfather; you can see all his awards on the gravestone." The trip to Arlington concluded for the juniors with Cooper Corless and Christine Junjulas, accompanied by Jaiden Gunther and Elaina Johanson, placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on behalf of Haldane High School. "Having the opportunity to actually lay the wreath was so powerful; I was really moved," said Corless. Junjulas echoed that sentiment: "It was a really cool way to have our school honor the people who have done so much for our country." Both have family members who served in the military. Teachers Kristen Peparo and Marilyn Granese, co-advisors for the class, planned the Washington trip. "I think the students felt a reverence for our country, its leaders, our history and the sacrifice many made to fight for our democracy," Peparo said. She said that, while visiting Arlington, the Haldane group passed by a military funeral. "Our students were so respectful and considerate of the grieving family," she said. "It was wonderful to see them pay such deep respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice."
Episode SummaryRichard sits down with Rhys Williams, Co-Founder of UKO to explore the rise of co-living and how it is reshaping Australia's residential landscape. The conversation delves into what co‑living actually is, how it is defined in Australia compared to global markets, and how it differs from Build to Rent. Rhys breaks down all aspects of the model which include key performance metrics, valuation assumptions and the value proposition for renters, explaining why co‑living continues to gain traction among both residents and investors. Further, they discuss why Sydney has become the centre of co‑living growth and the scale of the opportunity ahead across major cities.Rhys also shares his perspective on the role of government in supporting co‑living, what policymakers need to better understand at local, state and federal levels, what is working well today, and what changes are still required to unlock greater supply and long‑term housing outcomes. This episode provides a timely and practical look at an evolving segment of the residential market.About Our GuestRhys is Co-Founder of UKO, part of LiveStay a national operator of apartment hotels, co-living and Build to Rent properties across Australia under their three operating brands Veriu Hotels and Suites, Punthill apartment Hotels and UKO.In this episode, Rhys explores the journey of UKO, why the company was created and the role that it plays with the LiveStay platform. Rhys reflects on how his more than two decades in the living sector informed UKO's strategy and positioning, and why co-living has emerged as distinct and necessary housing solution in Australia. With more than 22 years' experience in the living sector, Rhys and his partners Alex and Zed have grown an initial single-apartment operation into a huge portfolio of more than 5,950 keys under operation or development, representing a gross asset value of approximately $3.2 billion. He also leads the UKO brand, which operates co-living and Build to Rent assets on behalf of developers, family offices and institutional capital.Tune into the EpisodeIf you're interested in understanding co‑living, why it is emerging as a critical part of Australia's housing solution, and what governments and investors need to do to support its growth, this is a conversation that is for you. Casey Williams is a Lecturer in the Center for Environmental Studies at Rice University. His research examines the social and cultural dimensions of climate change and energy transition, especially the problem of “climate impasse” and the concept and possibility of a “just transition.” His writing on climate, energy and labor has appeared in The New York Times, The LA Review of Books, Radical Philosophy, Jacobin, Dissent, and elsewhere. Rhys Williams is a Lecturer at University of Glasgow who works on the intersection between fantasy, narrative and energy. His work also looks to get a better grasp on the relationship between ecology and infrastructure. He's a member of the Petrocultures Research Group and the After Oil Collective. He also organizes the Energy and Ecology Group in Glasgow. Right now a lot of his focus is on energy, infrastructure, food, and water. You can read some of that work in Open Library of Humanities and South Atlantic Quarterly. I think one of the most important takeaways for me in this conversation was this idea that we need to leave more space for real deliberation in our politics, and that this actually means that we need to accept the fact of friction. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but what we call, in this conversation, “frictionful engagements” aren't really the norm in political communication. What we tend to get is a situation where frictionlessness is tacitly preferred, and so, in Casey's words, “Capital quietly takes the reins” and we're left with mechanisms that are meant to do all the heavy lifting in political decision-making. Rhys and Casey see ways that these mechanisms, especially financial mechanisms in the climate debate, really function like a narrative technique – it's the mechanism that has the agency, not us, and this is the narrative we've been largely sold: a kind of politics-without-politics. One of the other big things that I'd underline is Casey's challenge to those that engage with the climate crisis and who are worried about communicating the risks: he says that there is actually a real political risk involved in treating specific disasters as “metonymic representatives of the climate crisis as a whole.” When we bundle a highly localized disaster into an accumulation of disasters that tell us a story about the agglomeration of impacts and the climate emergency as a whole, Casey says we risk effacing the specificity of the struggles occurring at the local level: struggles not just against the impacts of a transforming climate, but also struggles for social and economic autonomy against global capitalism. I hadn't thought about it that way before and that sense of being responsible to the specificity of place is something I've definitely taken with me from this conversation. There's a few other things I'd mention: we talk about the “degrowth imaginary” and questions of the scale at which infrastructure ceases to be life-giving. We talk a lot about technology as a thing that gets privileged in science fiction and in popular discourse as a “driver of historical change.” There's quite a bit of discussion here about the social layers that get subsumed under technology as it gets fetishized in this way. Overall, too, there's a concern here with how we have been slowly abstracted from nature as such. How we've sealed ourselves off from it by instrumentalizing all the life around us, or as much of it as we can control and colonize and commodify. So, in the face of the real need to address the crisis of a destabilized climate system, they talk about what we should include in the discussion that too quickly gets displaced.

[TW//Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Alcoholism] Today I welcome actor Kai Owen who is a popular and familiar face on the British stage and television, appearing in numerous shows on major UK television channels. Kai is best known for his roles in the hugely popular UK continuing drama series Hollyoaks playing the role of Pete Buchanan and as Rhys Williams in the smash hit series Torchwood. Kai had an idyllic childhood growing up in the heart of Snowdonia in Wales surrounded by inspiring, hard working, working class alpha males whilst his mum worked three jobs. He comes from a drinking town with many pubs where people would finish work on a Friday and drink all weekend. It felt like there was never an option not to drink - that at 16 you leave school, 17 you learn to drive and 18 you go to the pubs. Kai did this for many years and became away to manage anxiety, which leads to his rock bottom, serving as a catalyst for completely changing his lifestyle. A compelling story on how his drinking slowly destroyed his life, how he stays "stopped" and the incredible benefits and joys of a sober lifestyle. Since his rock bottom, the only way has been up and he's never looked back. 0:00 Intro 3:19 Kai's rock bottom 7:40 The effects of not sharing your problems 10:55 How the alpha male environment shapes your way of coping with anxiety 14:00 The start of drinking 17:08 Kai's time at drama school and going into work 22:33 Mental health, alcohol and medication 25:38 Addiction is a progressive illness 30:12 Making better choices 34:20 Changing the culture of going out 40:40 How good mental health benefits your loved ones 44:30 Dealing with feelings of anxiety and vunerability 49:48 Inspiration to reach out for help If you are struggling with alcohol please contact your nearest NHS alcohol service - https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/find-alcohol-addiction-support-services/ This Podcast is not for profit but my goal is to break even. About this podcast - Welcome to the School Of Rock Bottom Podcast with Oliver Mason. I work as an actor, voice-over artist, Performing Arts School Principal and a Mental Health Coach. It's these careers and passions combined that have inspired this podcast! People working in the entertainment and performing arts industry are twice as likely to experience depression, are up to 15x more likely to suffer from anxiety and those working across all the creative industries are 3x more likely to suffer a mental health problem. "AMD Inc. (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) received notices for the chip bans, but others probably did as well. U.S. Dollar strength makes quarterly earnings for multinationals challenging. I favor consumer staples, REITs, and higher-dividend energy stocks. As the 10-year approached 3.5%, investors will be able to buy bond proxy stocks," says Rhys Williams.

Agriculture and energy stocks will continue to be strong as the Russia-Ukraine war continues, explains Rhys Williams, Chief Strategist at Spouting Rick Asset Management. The disinflation playbook, which benefitted growth stocks over the last eight years, is unlikely to repeat, adds Rhys. He discusses a barbell approach to your portfolio, which should include big-tech balanced with energy, agriculture, and REITs. I think it's going to be a tough earnings season because people are keying in on bad news and not good news, he adds. He points out higher costs and lighter revenues in March, causing more negative surprises. Lastly, he gives his thoughts on upcoming rate hikes.
"Interest rates will largely determine who wins out between growth and value stocks," says Rhys Williams. He believes that REITs should continue to win out if interest rates remain low, especially the industrial (e-commerce), towers, and apartments sub-sectors. Finally, he provides his stocks to watch: Mastercard (MA) and Disney (DIS).
Rhys Williams highlights areas of opportunity in the reopening trade. He says some of the moves in hotels and high-end restaurants like Ruth's Chris Steak House (RUTH) are premature given the current economic landscape. Williams notes that IMAX should benefit as theaters reopen globally and people feel safe. He also thinks gaming, automotive, cell phones, memory and 5G are going to be strong themes that play out this year.
