Paul Waddell, Professor of City & Regional Planning at UC Berkley and Founder & President of UrbanSim, and Matt McMullen, Associate Principal at Abel Design Group join us on this episode 163 of Art of Construction. In our last episode, Devon spoke to Hypar about their plan to jumpstart the AEC industry with a tool that rapidly generates alternating building options using preexisting information and expertise from the built world. From that conversation Art of Construction was lead to Paul Waddell, who is doing something similar for the real estate market and urban development.  Paul's platform UrbanSim is an open source model system used by Metropolitan Planning Organizations and others for operational planning purposes in a variety of U.S. metropolitan areas and internationally. Urban Canvas is a visual platform within UrbanSim that allows you to rapidly visualize various development scenarios and see their effects using up to date analytics and data from the cloud. Essentially, it is the Hypar for urban planning and development. Last but not least in the toolkit is Penciler, a powerful new web-based tool for multifamily housing development that lets you create and compare many different building options for a site, helping you to make better-informed site acquisition decisions.  Together, what all this amounts to is a set of tools that cut through a ridiculously large amount of data to help make development decisions effectively and immediately. These decisions can range from where you should put a single multifamily unit in a certain area of San Francisco, to major city and state policy decisions made by governmental bodies. In an age where progress stalls because no one can agree on what the solid facts are, UrbanSim allows people the opportunity to put their differences aside and make real decisions using trusted data they can visualize immediately.  Talk about a huge impact.  Join Devon and Matt as they go on a journey with Paul to learn all about his amazing platform UrbanSim, the real estate market of the future, and how the ability to rapidly evaluate development opportunities will push urban planning to new heights and lead to better communities for us all!

Well, this comic MUST be good because the title is in all caps! There's also a ROGUE ONE reference, and you will have to help us settle a big debate on just which Star Destroyer appears in this comic. Title: "DOOMWORLD!" Release Date: March 14, 1978 Writer: Archie Goodwin Consulting Editor: Jim Shooter Penciller: Carmine Infantino, Terry Austin Synopsis: Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2 are still stranded on the water world Drexel. However they are caught in the middle of a battle between the sea-dragons, one ridden by a Dragon Lord; and hydra craft piloted by Governor Quarg's scavengers. The combatants are battling for the prize of Luke's wrecked ship, as anything mechanical is a rare commodity on this ocean-covered planet. Luke and the droids are captured and brought back to their base where Luke tries to convince Quarg that the droids would be more useful to them intact instead of being stripped down for parts. A new modern urban re-interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. That's how the digital comic Watson and Holmes is being referred to.   The recent revival in Sherlock Holmes material across a variety of media has truly increased the buzz around our favorite topic. From the reimagining on the big screen, courtesy of the Robert Downey, Jr. / Jude Law films, to the small screen updating of the characters in Sherlock, through Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman and soon the Jonny Lee Miller / Lucy Liu version in Elementary, there is plenty of interest in the perennial character.   Now, we're prepared to be treated to yet another version of the iconic detective and his faithful friend and colleague, thanks to . In this episode, we're joined by three of the principals who are behind the updating of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson the a modern urban setting of New York and as African American characters. Brandon Perlow, Publisher and co-creator of Watson and Holmes, Justin Gabrie, Senior Editor, and Karl Bollers, Writer joined us to tell the story behind their work with Paul J Mendoza, Co-creator and color artist and Rick Leonardi, Penciler - who has worked on a number of Marvel and DC Comics projects.   We also discuss the issue of race and the Canon, landing on an interesting work from Vol. 27, No. 3  (September 1977) of the Baker Street Journal - not a Gas-Lamp, but an article by William P.
