Dr. Victor Santiago Pineda as the new Executive Director of CIL! With his extensive experience as a global advocate for disability rights and his innovative vision, Dr. Pineda is set to lead bThe center for Independent Living into an exhilarating new chapter of empowerment and inclusion.Victor Santiago Pineda was born in Caracas, Venezuela, At the age of two, Pineda was hospitalized with a high fever and for the next five years he demonstrated gradual weakening of his skeletal muscles. By age four, his weakened muscles caused him to fall repeatedly and by age seven, he stopped walking completely. His muscular deterioration would continue and eventually affect his breathing. By the time he was in high school, he needed to use a ventilator at night, and by the time he started his doctoral program in his late-twenties, he required a ventilator twenty-four hours per day.As a child, Pineda was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA-Type II), a form of muscular dystrophy. However, as an adult, he was examined by a neurophysiologist who, with the use of electromyography, determined that there was no evidence to suggest Spinal muscular atrophy. The specific cause of Pineda's muscle weakness was identified as collagenopathy VI, resulting from an extremely common genetic mutation.Pineda attended Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California, and was selected by his graduating class as a commencement speaker. Upon graduating in 1997, Pineda attended the California Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities (YLF). As a freshman at the University of California Berkeley, he received specialized support services provided by the Disabled Students Office (DSP) and participated in the Disabled Students Residence Program (DSRP).[citaWhile at UC Berkeley was elected senator for the ASUC student government, defended ethnic studies, with the leadership of Andrew Berk, hehelped resurrect the long dormant Disabled Students Union (DSU). During this time he established the Disability Media Initiative (DMI) and the Pineda Foundation to provide 21st century workforce skills to youth with disabilities. Pineda earned a B.A. in political economy, a B.S. in business administration and, eventually, a master's degree in city and regional planning (MCP) with a concentration in regional economic development. He then accepted an internship in Washington, D.C., where he served as a summer associate at the US Treasury's Department of International Affairs.IPineda was awarded the American Association of People with Disabilities Paul G. Hearne Award.Pineda's "It's About Ability" projectwas honored in Montenegro for the Best Humanitarian Action by UNICEF.Also in 2011, he received the prestigious Mark Bingham Award for Excellence in Achievement by a Young Alumnus/a, Cal Alumni Association for his work in education and human rights.© 2025 Building Abundant Success!!2025 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBAS

The other a case about transgender care for minors in Tennessee, may ultimately turn into a case about states' rights. Professor at UC Berkley and distinguished visiting professor at the School of Civic Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin, John Yoo, explains the cases as well as the fight for term limits for Supreme Court Justices. With a little over a month remaining in office, historians and pundits are already pondering how history will view our nation's 46th President. Presidential historian & former United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush, Tevi Troy notes that Presidents are generally remembered for one big thing - often summed up in one sentence. Tevi debates whether President Biden will be remembered more for his age, or the large money legislation ushered in early in his term. Learn more about your ad choices. Many Americans didn't know what to expect leading up to the CNN Presidential Debate last Thursday. However, after the debate concluded, both Republicans and Democrats seemed to focus primarily on one concern: President Biden's performance. Though former President Trump also received backlash for lying and straying away from questions asked, President Biden's raspy voice, and freezing and meandering answers left Americans worried, regardless of their politics. FOX News contributor and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, Marc Thiessen, and former Biden Campaign Surrogate Kevin Walling discuss the stand-out moments from debate night, how much a debate can impact an election, and the likelihood of Democrats potentially replacing President Biden as the presidential nominee. Several important opinions from the Supreme Court were released this week as the country anxiously awaits the high court's ruling on presidential immunity. On Friday, the court overturned the 1984 Chevron decision allowing the federal government to regulate workplace safety and consumer protections. In addition, the Justices made it harder to charge Capitol riot defendants with obstruction, a charge also brought against former President Donald Trump. John Yoo is a law professor at UC Berkley, a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. He joins to break down this week's opinions and preview the immunity decision expected early next week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dallas Willard, a UC Berkley professor of epistemology and philosophy died in 2013 after a tough battle with pancreatic cancer. He was also a deeply devoted disciple of Jesus Christ. "The reason the book of Job is in the Bible partly is to help us understand we're in a battle. You might think if you read the book of Job it would be a good idea not to call the devil's attention to yourself by being too good, but testing does come. In the time of testing, we want to cling to God, not doubt him, but cling to him ... You want to understand that sometimes the suffering doesn't come for that reason; it comes because there is an enemy who wishes to make you doubt God." In this new series, "Where is God When it Hurts?" Pastor Rick Hale embarks on a 30,000 foot level study of the book of Job. Make sure you make all of the series, but especially this first message: "Behind the Curtain".
If you haven't noticed, the concept of achievement and even competitiveness has weighed heavily on my mind as of late. A gift of the nontraditional life is the opportunity to step back and see the world around us with a degree of unusual clarity, far from the treadmill. For years I valued athletic and professional progress in ways that weren't making my life better, but I thought they were. I searched for and implemented solutions to the wrong problems. Meanwhile, what truly mattered—mainly my relationships—withered on the vine. The journey toward rectifying these tendencies continues today. My guest today, Lincoln Stoller, is a former mountaineer who now specializes in psycho-, hypno-, and neurofeedback therapy, in tandem with numerous other counseling and coaching services. Lincoln holds a PhD in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics from UT Austin, including a post-doc assignment at UC Berkley. Lincoln eventually moved from quantum physics to create a management and automation software platform for businesses, learned to build Norwegian log homes, traveled and lived abroad in far-flung foreign lands, and is even a certified pilot. To say Lincoln lives well outside of the bounds of normalcy is probably a half-truth at best. As he says in the interview, we should “just keep doing out-of-the-box stuff. And if people are calling you a little crazy or a little nutty, then you probably aren't exploring enough of the boundaries.” Today's conversation revolves around the high-risk potential of hard-charging performers and achievers, whether they exist in sports, business, or other areas of life. While these individuals hold our collective attention and admiration, Lincoln outlines how their psychological roots run shallow. They often struggle to stay satisfied with themselves or those around them. Lincoln might even say he holds an anti-hard-man philosophy. I think you'll see why. Lindsay Baker is a movement leader, author, and podcast host. Currently, she is the CEO of the International Living Future Institute, and her path there has been surprising and impressive. She started her career working at the US Green Building Council developing early standards for LEED, subsequently she was a researcher at UC Berkley, global head of sustainability at WeWork, member of Google's Real Estate Sustainability Team, and co-founder of a smart buildings company. Throughout her winding career, she has been driven not by a desire to have a particular role but by a desire to effect as much change as possible at the intersection of buildings, climate, and human health. She seeks positions where she can access “levers for disproportionate change,” where she can make a major impact. Lindsay and show host Neal trace Lindsay's mission-focused upbringing and professional career, including her childhood in Atlanta, formative years in college, and first job working on the LEED certification. They talk about her experience in Silicon Valley, at Google and WeWork, exploring her philosophy behind enacting change most effectively. Today's Hosts: Elli AreProduction and Marketing: Jarrett Ramones, Tim Haydock, Kody Stoebig & Fatima Ramirez Editor: Rachel LivinalWhat does Climate education look like in California schools these days? Bluntly, there are no climate education mandates for For K-12 or for general education at public university. For most students environmental education doesn't become accessible until you get to college and really only if that's your chosen major. Enter California Assembly Bill 1939, which aims to address this deficiency in our education system. First introduced in 2022, AB 1939 would add a science requirement to California K-12 schools addressing the causes and effects of Climate Change and offer methods to mitigate and adapt. As of the time of this recording the Bill was sent by the senate to the Committee on Education where it has sat since June 15th, 2022Today, Elli is Joined by Sage Lenier, creator of the UC Berkley course Solutions for a Sustainable and Just Future, and former Instructor of the same UC Berkeley course Anu Thirunarayanan to discuss Climate literacy, what accessible and equitable environmental education should look like, and the power of peer-to-peer/youth-led education. https://www.sustainableandjustfuture.org/historyWe'd Love to Hear from You! QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“…the number-one rule of acting is, ‘Do not seek approval from the audience.' People don't realize that. You can't do stuff to get applause. You have to live in the truth.”~Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020), award-winning actor When we “think we are most free, we are most coerced by the dominant beliefs of our own culture. For it is a powerful cultural fiction that we not only can, but must, make up our deepest beliefs in the isolation of our private selves.”~Robert Bellah (1927-2013), UC Berkley professor of sociology “Christianity is the only major faith built entirely around a single historical claim. It is, however, a claim quite unlike any other ever made, as any perceptive and scrupulous historian must recognize. Certainly, it bears no resemblance to the vague fantasies of witless enthusiasts or to the cunning machinations of opportunistic charlatans…. [For Saul of Tarsus] it is the report of a man who had never known Jesus before the crucifixion, and who had once persecuted Jesus' followers, but who also believed that he had experienced the risen Christ, with such shattering power that he too preferred death to apostasy. And it is the report of countless others who have believed that they also—in a quite irreducibly personal way—have known the risen Christ.”~David Bentley Hart, philosopher and scholar, in The Atheist Delusion “God accepts only the forsaken, cures only the sick, gives sight only to the blind, restores life to only the dead, sanctifies only the sinners, gives wisdom only to fools. In short, He has mercy only on those who are wretched…. Therefore, no proud saint, no wise or just person, can become God's material, and God's purpose cannot be fulfilled in him. He remains in his own work and makes a fictitious, pretended, false, and painted saint of himself, that is, a hypocrite.”~Martin Luther (1483-1546), German reformer “Like wheat and tares, true ideas and false ideas have grown together throughout church history, and it's up to faithful Christians to be watchful and diligent to compare every idea with the Word of God and see if it lines up.”~Alisa Childers in her book Another Gospel? “We need the gospel…. We need the life-giving, identity-establishing, purpose-defining gospel of Jesus Christ.”~Eric Mason, Philadelphia-based pastorSERMON PASSAGEGalatians 1:1-5, 11-24 (NASB) 1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), 2 and all the brethren who are with me, 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen. 6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! 10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ. 11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it; 14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions. 15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus. 18 Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.) 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea which were in Christ; 23 but only, they kept hearing, “He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith which he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they were glorifying God because of me.
Office buildings in the South can be notoriously cold in the summer months – or at least that's what a majority of women would say who jokingly refer to offices in the summer as “women's winter.” This year as more companies return to the office amid record heatwaves and requests by ERCOT for Texans to reduce electricity usage, we ask why office buildings temperatures can feel out of line with the outside temperatures. We talk to Stefano Schiavon, professor at UC Berkley's Center for the Built Environment, about his research into gender disparities in thermal comfort in the office and what can be done to make more employees feel comfortable. Later in the episode interview John Myers of the real estate firm JLL who oversees a property management platform in Dallas about what Texas building owners do to try to balance tenant and employee comfort while reducing energy use. To lead off this episode, Andy sits down with PGA Tour winner Michael Kim (@Mike_kim714) to chat about a variety of topics. They discuss the courses Michael played in the Bay Area while attending UC Berkley, his strong play this season, and his newly vocal presence on Twitter. They also debate the USGA and R&A's proposed Model Local Rule for a reduced-flight competition ball (Andy is for it; Michael, like most PGA Tour members, is against it). For the back half of the episode (1:05:44), Andy brings on Jimmy and Jake Hoselton of the company Grass Clippings (@GrassClippingsc). Jimmy and Jake talk about how they founded Grass Clippings to shed more light on the turf industry, and the company's plans to develop an accessible, lighted par-3 course designed by Jackson Kahn.
In this episode, California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday talks with students from the UC Riverside School of Public Policy about volunteerism and uniting individuals through service. About Josh Fryday: Appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Josh Fryday leads California Volunteers, which works to establish and maintain a statewide volunteer corps to help with the state's response to emergencies and disasters. Josh Fryday was previously Mayor of Novato, Novato City Councilmember, Chief Operating Officer for NextGen Climate and Past President of Golden State Opportunity. In addition to obtaining his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy as well as his J.D. in law from UC Berkley, Josh Fryday also served in the military as an Officer in the United States Navy and as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). Learn more about Josh Fryday via: https://www.californiavolunteers.ca.gov/about-us/cso/ Podcast Highlights: "We have really big issues facing California, facing our country, facing the planet... But I feel very strongly that if we're going to actually tackle some of these big issues, we have to figure out how to bring everyone to the table. How do we make everyone part of the solution? How do we engage everyone? How do we bring people together so that they can solve problems in communities together?” - Josh Fryday on the topic of unity through volunteerism. "With this [Job Corps] program, we're providing real economic opportunity. But what we're also saying is that you don't have to decide between pursuing your passion, something you're passionate about, or a paycheck - that you can actually do both. That you don't have to decide between whether you want to launch a career and be able to feed your family or help your community, that you can actually do both.” - Josh Fryday on the topic of creating programs that allow for financial need to no longer be a barrier to service. "But I think the reason California is viewed as a leader, not just of the country, but of the planet, is because a lot of the values that we hold dear are universal. The value of making sure that people are included. The value of embracing diversity. The value of taking care of our environment. These are things that are not unique just to California. I think… because of our culture's willingness to innovate and try new things and invent new things, [our volunteer programs] are very compelling and become scalable across the rest of the world.” - Josh Fryday on the topic of the universal values California shares with the rest of the world. Way back in the early years of the internet, Ben Thompson decided to start a website. Each week he filled that website with incredible tales of guts, glory, and everything in between as he told stories of Ninjas, Vikings, war heroes, scientists, explorers and even the occasional badass dog! Millions of views, hundreds of stories, multiple books and decades later, Ben's beloved website www.badassoftheweek.com finally has a podcast! And of course, it wouldn't be Badass of the Week, if it wasn't weekly. Joining Ben Thompson on this audio adventure, to class the joint up a bit, is his co-host, former colleague, and long-time friend, Dr. Patricia Larash who brings degrees in the classics and philology from Harvard and UC Berkley respectively. Each week Ben and Pat trade fun over-the-top stories of badasses from history, mythology, fiction and wherever else they can be found. In season 1, they'll talk about Hercules and The Virginia Hercules, Voytek the Bear that fought for the Polish Army in WWII, woman pirates Ann Bonney and Mary Read, The Indian Warrior Queen Rani Lakshmi Bai who rode into battle with her child on her back, American war hero turned traitor Benedict Arnold, Roman Emperor Vespasian, and the very explosive Volcano Krakatoa, among so many other badasses. Now and then, they'll be joined by guests, celebrities and experts to chime in with insight, humor and even their own stories of badassery. Download. Listen. Subscribe. Follow. Tell your friends. Listen Again. Rate. And all that good stuff! New episodes of Badass of the Week arrive every week which is a good thing because we have so many stories to tell. We hope you check it out! Synopsis During his stay in America, the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak became convinced that distinctive American music could be based on two sources: the work songs and spirituals of African-Americans and the chants and dances of indigenous Native American tribes. By the early 20th century, a number of American composers had taken his suggestions to heart. One of them, Arthur Farwell, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on today's date in 1872. Farwell went to MIT intending to become an electrical engineer, and did, in fact, get his engineering degree in 1893, the same year Dvorak's views began appearing in the press. Farwell decided that a musical career might be more interesting than engineering. Frustrated at his inability to find a publisher for his set of solo piano transcriptions entitled American Indian Melodies, he formed his own publishing house. Farwell also set Emily Dickinson poems to music, experimented with polytonality, and, in 1916, arranged for the first “light show” in New York's Central Park, decades before the psychedelic 1960s. Farwell taught at Cornell, UC Berkley and Michigan State, but never felt at home in academia, preferring to organize community-based musical pageants with audience participation. He died at the age of 79 in New York in 1953. Music Played in Today's Program Arthur Farwell (1872 – 1952) Navajo War Dance and Song of Peace Dario Muller, piano Marco Polo 223715

California's state senate passed a bill last week that could revolutionize the west coast and U.S. fast-food industry. The bill aims to create a council that would set wages and working conditions for the industry.According to a study by UCLA and UC-Berkley, nearly two-thirds of fast-food workers in Los Angeles said they'd experienced wage theft. Nearly half experienced injuries or faced health and safety hazards on the job. This legislation would be the first of its kind in the country. We discuss the bill and what impacts it could have on the fast-food industry and across the U.S.Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast.
