From lightning fast development on the Las Vegas strip, to oil fueled expansion in Edmonton, Alberta, to once in a generation energy plant upgrades throughout the Southeast, to global mission critical and life science construction for enterprise owners, he thrives in the challenging delivery gap between “as is” conditions and the “to be” designed state. His career highlights include the on-site project management of over 2.5 million square feet of new distribution space across North America with zero recordable injuries, and WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) recognition for the use of 4D technology in project delivery. He knows that projects succeed because of people—what they believe, strategy—as it supports creativity and innovation, and tools—to deliver value, drive out waste, and improve safety. Charlie's current working definition of a project storyteller is this: imagine that which is not, and take others there with you. He believes that construction may be the highest form of storytelling, for it transports humanity in a permanent way. This is episode 3 of 6 in a Deep Dive Series on the Housing Innovation Alliance! If you hear any background noise, that's because this episode was recorded LIVE at the HIA Conference 2024 at the University of Denver! “So if I can summarize what we do, or what we're trying to aspire to do, is make offsite construction so easy a caveman could do it.” In this conversation, Devon Tilly chats with Garrett Moore of Agorus. In football, as in life, the most important person on the field is often the least noticed – the left tackle: he protects the quarterback's blind side.” As a quarterback at Stanford University, this simple lesson laid the early foundation for Garrett's servant-leadership philosophy: “It's the people you work with every day who determine your ability to make an impact”. After achieving a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford, and despite an early desire to jump right into a Silicon Valley start-up after graduation, Garrett's passion to serve led him to San Diego to become an officer in the Navy SEALs. During this time, he was also selected to become an Olmsted Scholar (similar to a Rhodes Scholarship). After learning Hebrew from scratch, he earned his master's degree in Cybersecurity at Tel Aviv University…in Hebrew! Living there in Startup Nation, he learned another critical lesson, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world.” You might see two common denominators in these life shaping experiences – a love of high performing teams and fearlessness in the face of challenges. Garrett and his co-founder Kyle run headlong into the fray when most would hesitate. “If a problem is too hard for everyone else, it's probably just right for us”. And for that reason, he is wholly committed to solving America's elusive housing crisis. Garrett is married to his childhood sweetheart and loves to spend time with his family. It's no surprise that he's also an extreme sports guy, snowboarding, mountain biking and e-foiling whenever he can. By the way, don't ever get suckered into a ping pong game with him. It won't go well for you. “I focus on one thing that I believe is going to fundamentally change the industry, and that is empathy.” This is episode 4 of 4 for a Deep Dive Series recorded at the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas in April 2024! If you hear any background noise, thad's because this episode was recorded LIVE at the AEC Summit! Join us for this episode as Devon chats with Charlie Dunn about his role as a Project Storyteller, and maybe why legos should be taken seriously! Charlie tells a good story. From lightning fast development on the industry in the Las Vegas strip, to oil fueled expansion in Edmonton, Alberta, to once in a generation energy plant upgrades throughout the Southeast, to global mission critical and life science construction for enterprise owners, he thrives in the challenging delivery gap between “as is” conditions and the “to be” designed state. "Every developer has a different site, every developer is confounded with different setbacks, zoning, and planning...so everything's different which means it's more project based, you can't just build a thousand of them because you're not going to be able to see a thousand of 'unit A,' and so that's like the biggest challenge." Join Devon as he chats with Jared Levy about advancing prefabrication! Equal parts creativity and relentless problem solving. He has spent the past two decades in the prefab space, transforming the way housing is built and delivered. He helped launch Marmol Radziner Prefab in 2004 and developed the product line. He was one of the early pioneers in the modern prefab movement and received a ton of press – called “Masterpiece in a Box” by GQ and “Prefab Perfected” by Dwell – but he served a limited niche market with his bespoke custom prefab homes. In 2012, he co-founded and launched Connect Homes. His mission was to deliver modern living to a broader market. By turning the home into a standardized product, they were able to develop an assembly line process to build housing at scale, delivering over 900 modules to date. And with their patented prefab logistics system, they could cost effectively deliver homes to a national market. Their first home appeared on the cover of Dwell with the tag line “Modern For All”, so they knew they were heading in the right direction. And still are to this day. At the core of off-site construction are large gaps between design and manufacturing and the field. You might have functional expertise in each of those areas, but things fall through the gaps. These gaps between functions and stakeholders are where margins slip and where schedules slip. With his experience in all aspects of the product lifecycle and value stream, he likes to focus on these gaps and close them. As a former CEO, he knows first-hand the path is not always a clear one to scaling in this space. He's learned what works and doesn't work, made mistakes along the way, and learned from them to save you from having to repeat them. He is on a never-ending pursuit to build homes more efficiently and he wants to make a positive impact to companies like yours that are trying to change this industry. “I love hearing the words, ‘this is how we've always done it…' because I'm not an expert, I've just been around a lot of really smart people, and my job is to consume their information and then try to present it back to people in terminology and systems they actually understand.” This is episode 1 of 3 for a Deep Dive Series on Advancing Prefabrication! Adam Ketterer's focus is revolutionizing material management for Electrical Contractors. He's helping Electrical Contractors, Distributors and Manufacturers leverage technology to streamline takeoff, BOM, prefab and installation processes to combat the increasing labor shortage in the construction space. Our AECInspire cloud-based software provides full visibility and access to a contractor's supply chain, unlocking prefabrication and collaboration opportunities to help them save time and money! He watched his father (with his mother's support) build a company from an idea to $250M a year in annual revenue, He even got to help over the last 10 years. Unfortunately, they trusted the wrong people and lost the family business (the 2nd hardest event in his life behind watching cancer take his mother). As he worked for their lender, dismantling what his father built while helping run the company with a skeleton crew (almost keeping the company alive twice), they discovered numerous missteps that could have been avoided...alas, it was too late. Luckily, he landed at Graybar in August 2014 and what a ride it was! The people, culture and values are second to none. From Marketing to Strategy to Sales and back to Strategy, he consistently worked with great folks from across the country who surprised him with creative solutions to customer problems as well as ideas for internal improvement. His time with Graybar was exciting, educational and fulfilling; then a new challenge came calling... At Emerson he was privileged to introduce retailers, industry partners and end users to their innovative hardware and software solutions. Additionally, he worked with talented salespeople, developers, marketers, customer service and numerous other fine individuals as they continued to adapt their solutions for additional use cases and ever-changing customer needs. After several years helping customers solve difficult problems, a new and intriguing opportunity presented itself with his friends at AECInspire. In his spare time he is interested in why we do the things we do; and if we should continue doing them, how we can do them more effectively. AECInspire is the ultimate tool for revolutionizing material management on construction projects. It connects takeoff, BOM, prefab, and installation into one dynamic platform, allowing users to verify, quantify, and integrate their material takeoff with ease. “The one thing that I always say about modular is that it's a blessing and a curse…for a successful modular project you have to work through so many things before the project can begin…The blessing is that you know what it's going to cost if you effectively work through all those things...You have a lot more work to do, but if it's done the right way you can hit that budget.” Join Devon this week as we talk about modular home building in Colorado with Nathan Peterson of Vederra! Nathan Peterson is the CEO and Founder of Vederra Modular. Vederra Modular is a new 140,000 sqft modular housing factory in Aurora Colorado dedicated to supporting the affordable housing organizations in Colorado. Vederra recently received a funding award from the State of Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Nathan has been a fixture in the modular home industry in Colorado since 2005. Over that time, he has built one of the states largest modular dealerships and development companies utilizing modular technology. Since 2005, Colorado Modular Homes has completed over $250 Million dollars in modular housing projects all over Colorado. In addition to this retail business, Mr. Peterson currently has over 140,000 ft2 of affordable housing projects in various stages of development. He has a passion for creative housing solutions and helping those underserved and disadvantaged communities in Colorado.
"My goal for SSLLC is to have a company that doesn't provide stress to somebody's home life or them personally. So the only way that can happen is to teach leadership and lean into those stresses {to find a solution}..." Join Devon as he chats with Scott Sypniewski Sr. & Jr. about leadership! SSLLC was founded on August 1, 2021, by Scott and Kathleen Sypniewski. Scott and Katheen operated a plumbing business in Chicago, from 2000-2018, while raising 4 children. Scott grew up in his father's multifamily plumbing business. In 2018, as their youngest was graduating high school, Scott and Kathleen gave their business to a trusted employee and moved to Colorado. In May of 2021, Scott read the book Extreme Ownership. The book impacted his life and gave him the knowledge necessary to run a large scale business. When the opportunity was presented in July of 2021, Scott was ready for the challenge. With the support of Kathleen, they formed SSLLC and began to assemble their team. As of April 2024, SSLLC has 20 people on their management team and 50 plumbers. Extreme Ownership has provided the foundation for success. They have built a strong culture that people believe in. That foundation allows them to develop processes that structure their operation, i.e., project manuals, 3 week look a heads, quarterly customer reviews, QA/QC implementation and implemented safety procedures, to name a few. A testimonial from their Leadership coach and advisor, Marcus Aurelius Anderson: “Working with SSLLC as a Leadership Advisor over the last year, I can say that I've never seen a company that genuinely values culture as much as SSLLC. Their employees don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk and lead by example daily. They've made culture the cornerstone of all they do, it's the foundation upon which they've built everything from the ground up. There are plenty of companies that say how important cultivating relationships, caring for their people, and culture are but then fall flat when it comes time to execute. SSLLC has used extreme ownership and self leadership to be great problem solvers through teamwork, simplicity, prioritizing execution, and building every member of the company into better leaders. All of these skills have made SSLLC a tremendously successful company in a short amount of time.” A testimonial from the leadership group, Echelon Front: One of the things I really respect about SSLLC plumbing is that they're consistently looking for ways to improve as leaders. A good leader understands that you must make time to educate and train your team, this starts with the leaders making time to educate and train themselves. One of the areas the SSLLC leadership team is very strong in is continuing to develop as leaders and most importantly taking action with implementing this same concept with their team. A really good attribute with any leader is having an open mind to new ways of doing things or different perspectives, The Sypniewski's are always open minded with new ideas and concepts, especially when it comes to taking care of their team and people. ~ Steve Ward. Former U. S. Navy Seal, Combat Leader, and Leadership instructor at Echelon Front.

“Often we share problems…It can't stop there, and too often it does…We have to come to the table with ‘Here's an idea that might work.' The moment we start thinking about the future in terms of potential solutions…those conversations start adding up. That habit makes the collaboration work better, and it will get us to a point where we can make an impact.” This podcast episode features a conversation with Nolan Brown, the founder of ADL Ventures, about decarbonization and the challenges of implementing clean energy solutions in the construction industry. This episode is also happy to introduce Jason Blanker as the co-host! The conversation covers topics such as the role of drones in construction, the lack of adoption of innovation in the industry, and the future of technology in construction. Nolan is a seasoned entrepreneur and research leader with 15 years of C-Suite experience in energy, buildings, and transportation sectors. A 5-time founder, he brings a wealth of innovation and strategic insight to his roles. He has driven organizations to success as a board member of building materials manufacturer and offsite leader Sto Corporation, and Lead Contractor for High Performance Computing for Manufacturing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He also co-founded and served as Managing Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy and showcased his success in implementing new technologies, notably through his $40M+ living laboratory project. His expertise spans industries including building materials, automotive, and renewable energy. As founder of ADL Ventures, he guides companies not only in upscaling and business development but also in applying for government grants that fuel innovation and growth. Watch Nolan's TedX Talk! Jason Blenker is a cowboy and a visionary who finds the edge of the frontier a fascinating place to navigate and explore. The son of a carpenter and a home builder, he learned firsthand about building homes, businesses, and relationships from his parents whom he worked with in building a world-class, vertically integrated, offsite construction solutions company in the Midwest. After selling the business, he now guides others looking for solutions and is on the hunt for great innovation that will help address the housing affordability crisis we face today. He's on a mission to “Build Something Great®”. The first half of his career he spent focused on building great buildings – homes, apartments, commercial buildings, and off-site manufacturing where he found his true passion – building great teams and pushing innovation and automation. By focusing on culture, engaged leadership, and the team, he successfully grew a family business from 7 “employees” to over 300 “Team Members” and learned over 1 million wrong ways of doing things. He enjoys sharing stories of his bumps, bruises, and scars to help people find creative and inventive solutions to problems. When he's not working with a team, he enjoys spending time with the love of his life, Jenny, teaching and raising 3 crazy kids on a hobby farm, snocross racing, or at a rodeo. Not being much of a procrastinator, he does not believe in a bucket list that you'll get around to one day, you should live each day to its fullest. He tries to give his free time and talent to various charities and has even been talked into riding a 2000# bull at a rodeo to help support the local food pantry (much to the dismay of his wife). This is episode 4 of a 4 part series on constructing housing for I/DD adults! “Where does your heart rest in this work? I think that that's going to build their business definitively…In this work of what you're building or what you're doing, are you fundamentally changing the life of the persons who are going to be in your asset?” In this episode, Michelle Dumay of Energy Glass discusses the benefits and applications of Energy Glass, a solar alternative for standard plate glass windows. She shares case studies and challenges faced in implementing this technology and highlights the unique features of Energy Glass. Michelle also emphasizes the importance of considering the needs of the IDD (Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled) community in construction projects and encourages builders and affiliates to focus on the heart line of their work. Michelle Dumay is the mother of a terminally ill child born with a rare brain abnormality that required nearly half of her brain to be removed when she was less than a day old. Among other medical conditions (cerebral palsy, blindness and quadriplegia) her daughter suffers from four types of seizures. Michelle is no stranger to medical/hospital settings having taken her daughter to more than 1400 appointments. Her experience as a caregiver and medical advocate has allowed her to serve on patient advisory councils for two children's hospital (Los Angeles and Phoenix) and one insurer (Mercy Care). As a trained chemist, she first turned to conventional-pharma for the treatment of her daughter's seizures. Then she learned of the medicinal value of cannabis and its efficacy in mitigating seizures. With great success, her daughter has been using cannabis for several years. Along with advocacy, learning has been a huge part of this journey. Federal prohibition has hampered all things-cannabis, including medical use. Having experienced first-hand the benefits and efficacy of its use to mitigate her daughter's seizures, Michelle wanted to petition her insurance companies to cover the cost of the cannabis medicine. Quickly she learned that this was a lofty aspiration for a huge unforeseen reason (besides Prohibition): medical cannabis dispensaries are not HIPAA-compliant and as such, cannot partner with insurance companies to serve cannabis patients. Working to solve her own problem and the looming problem of millions of cannabis-using patients, she entered into the world of cannabis governance, risk and compliance. This is episode 3 of a 4 part series on constructing housing for I/DD adults! If you hear any background noise or laughter - that's because this podcast was recorded LIVE from the Nuts and Bolts Conference in Colorado Springs in November 2023! “Many people don't even know that this is a thing…so many of these folks live at home…we need more housing, we need policy to bring more money to allow for more affordable housing for this population. We need 100 of these buildings done tomorrow. The need is there.” Beth Rodriguez is the secretary and treasurer of Trailhead Community – a nonprofit organization founded in 2016 with a mission to create a neuro-inclusive and intentional housing community. Beth has a passion for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)- specifically helping them gain independence in activities they value. She is a licensed occupational therapist and a certified aging in place specialist (CAPS.) Beth grew up in the home building industry and cultivated a love for building and design. She is especially interested in universal design and home modifications to allow individuals of all ages and abilities to live safely and independently in their environments. Beth worked closely consulting with the design and construction team for Trailhead's first project in creating an 83 unit building that lives well, encourages community, and promotes health and wellness. Beth has many years of experience working with individuals with IDD in both a prevocational day program setting as well as providing direct care services in the homes of individuals helping them gain independence in daily living skills. She knows the desperate need for attainable housing in the Denver area for adults with IDD and appreciates the opportunity to be on Trailhead's Board to create innovative housing solutions for this population. In her spare time, you can find Beth enjoying anything outdoors- skiing, hiking, camping and traveling! This is episode 1 of a 4 part series on constructing housing for IDD adults! “Please listen to the parents, and understand their passion will drive them to success. Believe us…You won't just be helping us, and our kids, you will be solving an incredible social problem.” If you hear any background noise or laughter - that's because this podcast was recorded LIVE from the Nuts and Bolts Conference in Colorado Springs in November 2023! Barbara Ziegler is the Board president of the Trailhead Community. Here's more about Trailhead Community that can also be found on their website: Trailhead Community was originally inspired by the success of Stepping Stone Support Center, a sister company established in 2013. The Support Center provides prevocational and life skills training, job placement, job coaching services, social events and community connection. It now serves more than 100 individuals with developmental disabilities to live meaningful and productive lives. With this success in one aspect, it became quickly evident that another important piece was missing for adults with developmental disabilities: Homes of their own! The individuals we work with are first and foremost ADULTS. Like all adults, they deserve to live independently in a place of their own. So in 2016, a group of parents, Stepping Stone staff and other friends all came together for the purpose of creating a non-profit to address this need. Stepping Stone Communities was born and the mission established: creating and designing an extraordinary opportunity for people to come together in an integrated and intentional apartment community! After hundreds of hours of research and discussion, Stepping Stone Communities selected its first project- Trailhead Community, an apartment building with 77 units for both adults with DD and members of the general population with plenty of community space for meals and recreation. This was an ambitious project and it has grown since then! The final result is an 83 unit complex where 50% of the units are allocated for adults with developmental disabilities and the other 50% for neuro-typical residents. The building will include state-of-the-art technology and “Universal Design” features to promote independence and safety for all residents. A cooperative management model will integrate all residents to make decisions about how their community will operate! There will be on-site concierge staff to provide 24/7 oversite for the building, social events, meal preparation and encourage mutual exchange and support between tenants. The building will have many unique and intentional features to promote community including a sport court, sound-proof multimedia room for music, large screen viewing and mini jam sessions, an art studio, fitness room, a community kitchen and common dining room serving optional meals daily, and large common areas both indoors and outdoors!
