Próximo programa: Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (TV + Comics).
We are donning our stars and stripes this week for a double dose of Captain America! First, it's a review of the Captain America: Truth mini series by Robert Morales and Kyle Baker. Then its time for a movie review with Captain America: Brave New World starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford! Host: Andy Larson Co Hosts: Chad Smith and JA Scott
Isaiah Bradley, the first Black Captain America, is a powerful symbol of resilience. He became one of the only survivors among 300 African-American soldiers used in beta trials of the super soldier serum. Although he embraced the Captain America mantle, his actions were seen as treasonous, leading to an unjust life sentence—he ultimately served 17 years. Despite the tremendous struggles faced by him and his family, Isaiah became a legendary figure and a beacon of hope in the Black community.Join Mari, Brandon, and Bryce as they explore the remarkable story of Isaiah Bradley in the seven-issue mini-series "Truth: Red, White, and Black," written by Robert Morales and illustrated by Kyle Baker! What do you love about Isaiah Bradley? Artist, writer, cartoonist, playwright, director etc. Dean Haspiel rejoins the show to talk why he's launched his first Kickstarter (open through 3/30/23) to support a new comic, COVID Cop (think "unholy but hilarious combo of Judge Dredd, The Toxic Avenger, Sin City, and Marshal Law")! We get into how his approach to storytelling has changed in recent years, how he felt about the COVID-delayed debut of his play The War Of Woo, the thrill of making his short movie There Is No Try, and what it's like to work in hyper-collaborative mediums like theater & film. We also talk about the experience of drawing Superman at Yaddo, why he needed to revisit his pitch for COVID Cop now that we're semisorta past the worst of the pandemic, returning to his fave character, Billy Dogma, and wrapping up one phase of his The Red Hook series, the influence of Kyle Baker's Why I Hate Saturn on his upcoming work, the experience of mentoring comics artists at Atlantic Center for the Arts last month, his take on AI art for comics, and a lot more. What's The Future of Cannabis Regulations with Kyle Baker #80 What's the future of the cannabis industry? Today we meet Kyle Baker is a cofounder and CSO of Clean Theory and Ecobuds. I met Kyle at the Southern Illinois University Hemp and Cannabis Symposium. Kyle is a cannabis science entrepreneur with a background in reading tea leaves, or in this case fan leaves. In this episode Kyle and I chat about the future of cannabis regulations with examples of what the industry can expect. Kyle founded the companies based upon a deep understanding and experience in socio-technical design and econometric modeling and their application to disease mitigation. He has applied this expertise to 16 core markets for chlorine dioxide (ClO2) use, including early adaptation of ClO2 for disinfection and sterilization in brewery and winery operations, the application of ClO2 under the Minor Use/Minor Species Act, as well as supporting wastewater treatment patents in the automotive and secondary manufacturer markets. As a cannabis entrepreneur, Kyle focuses his attention on scientific verification methods and weighted decision-making to ensure the end-to-end delivery of clean and compliant cannabis to consumers, most notably medical patients. Kyle currently serves as an advisory board member for Southern Illinois University's Cannabis Science Cannabis Advocate Podcast The Cannabis Advocate podcast advocates for businesses in the cannabis industry and explores the unique challenges they face. Despite hurdles in legislation, regulation, and culture, there are tremendous opportunities for growers, manufacturers and retail sellers of cannabis products. Many of these issues are unique to the cannabis industry. This podcast speaks to these common concerns and shares stories of success. After all the competition talk we switch gears and talk to a pleasure hunter. This wasn't intended to be primarily about "Old Stock" Mountain Curs but the conversation with Kyle Baker kept coming back to them. Kyle has coon hunted since he was 3 years old and has continued the tradition of keeping it a family affair. He now hunts with his wife and kids on a regular basis. They hunt anything that can tree a coon and have multiple breeds of hounds and curs. MMP continues to discuss the comics the hosts read while on summer vacation. This week, the discussion is on Alex's pick, Captain America: Truth (2022). This incredible story by Robert Morales does not shy away from uncomfortable truths in American history. Although the story is fictional, the backdrop is real. The concept of the U.S army experimenting with eugenics on minority soldiers may be tough to believe, although it was a reality that is often swept under the rug. The cartoon style of artwork by Kyle Baker does well to soften the tone of an otherwise serious story. As society tends to look fondly on the past with nostalgia it is important to remember that it was not always pretty back in time. This is an excellent example of how a comic can be both informative while maintaining the reader's interest
