We all love our pets, and we'd do anything for them. But what happens when we can't, or aren't there to make sure they are well cared for? Some of us plan for our cats should we pass unexpectedly. But what happens when we are sick, temporarily unable to care for our pets, or wind up having a lengthy hospital stay. A timely topic in view of Rita's current bout with Covid, what would have happened to her cats had she been hospitalized? Or worse? As prepared as Rita thought she was, there is a big hole in her plans. This is where PetPeaceofMind.org comes in. This wonderful non-profit organization is there to help. Keeping people and pets together when they can is their goal, offering to help find temporary placement for people who find themselves unable to care for the pets due to illness of their own. They also teach hospices how to provide pet care assistance for their patients with pets. Join Linda and Rita as they talk with President and Founder, Dianne McGill. EPISODE NOTES: Pet Peace of Mind

Kacee Thompson, Executive Director of the Hospice of Acadiana Foundation, joined Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette to explain the mission and services offered by the area's oldest and only nonprofit hospice. Fate and faith led Kacee to serve this organization which has brought great solace to those in our community at the end of their life. Many of us are familiar with the concept of hospice but don’t know much about the mechanics of what occurs when a patient is ready for end of life care or how the cost of services is covered. In Acadiana, we have been fortunate to have had the leadership of Father Louis Richard in bringing hospice to our region. Following the death of his grandmother while he was a seminarian studying in Belgium, Lafayette-native Father Louis worked at St. Christopher's House near London with British physician, Dr. Cicely Saunders. Dr. Saunders is considered to be the founder of the modern-day Hospice movement, and it was there that Father Louie developed a deep commitment to caring for the dying. Returning home to Lafayette following his ordination, Father Louis met with other community leaders and, in 1983, helped establish Hospice of Acadiana, Inc.—a nonprofit hospice committed to providing quality care at the end of life for all, regardless of their ability to pay for these services. Hospice of Acadiana remains the only nonprofit hospice in our area. With the longest record of continuous service of any hospice in Louisiana, since 1983 they have served over 24,000 patients and their families. With a full-time staff physician, 300 volunteers, 70 full-time employees, and a dozen volunteer physicians, Hospice serves a 9 parish area for patients who live within a fifty-mile radius of the organization's offices at 2600 Johnston St. in Lafayette. Patients with a terminal illness or condition that have a prognosis of six months or less to live are eligible for Hospice of Acadiana's services. The main goal is always to keep the patients at home where they will be most comfortable. In some instances, home care is not available and the patient will be admitted to a hospital or nursing home. A long term goal of Hospice of Acadiana is to build an in-patient hospice facility for those who are not able to remain in their home. Hospice of Acadiana treats much more than the medical condition of the patient. They offer chaplains, social workers, therapists, and volunteers who can tend to the social, emotional, and financial needs of the patient as well as the patient's family. Emotional and social factors arise upon an end of life diagnosis, and the hospice team brings experienced counseling for those in need. Several programs are available for patients and their families: The Center for Loss & Transition offers grief counseling by certified bereavement counselors in an interactive approach to assist individuals process their grief. Camp Brave Hearts is a two day camp for children ages 7 to 11 who have experienced loss in a fun setting run by volunteers. Pet Peace of Mind is a national organization that locals can join to help hospice patients as they become unable to tend to their pets: volunteers walk, feed and clean up after the pets, and provide permanent placement for the pet after the patient passes. We Honor Veterans Program thanks veterans while they are still alive by presenting pins, Commendations from the State Legislature to thank the patient for their service to our country. Hospice of Acadiana was selected by New York University to participate in a five-year study on how to better care for dementia patients who are in hospice care. This collaborative effort with Hospice will determine how caregivers may best meet the needs of patients who Hospice began offering palliative care in January 2019 for those who have a terminal condition that may have a longer prognosis than the typical six-month term. These patients have the same needs for medical and social care and this new progr...
On today’s episode, it’s a pleasure to be joined by Dr Mia Cary. When I ask for guest recommendations from you guys, Mia’s is a name that comes up frequently, and here’s why. She has seen animal care from multiple different and interesting vantage points. And she’s excelled in them all. She began her career as a marine biologist before trading dolphins for dogs and completed her veterinary degree at the University of Florida. After graduation, she had a short spell in general practice before moving into her first industry role with Novartis where she spent many years rising to the level of national sales trainer and brand manager. She then moved to the snappily titled Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica where she held the roles of Marketing Manager for the Companion Animal Section and Director of Professional Services for the mid-Atlantic area. Her career then took a new direction when she traded a life in pharma for a role as the head of training and innovation for the North American Veterinary Community. A role she last year somewhat controversially traded in to move over to the American Veterinary Medical Association where she is now Chief of Professional Development and Strategic Alliances. Alongside her day jobs, Mia has also served as the 2017 President for the American Association of Industry Veterinarians and is on the Board of Directors for Pet Peace of Mind. And if all of that left you a little overwhelmed then just know this, Mia is an amazing example of leadership done right and she knows this industry, at least the North American bit of it, inside and out. Now, just before we jump into the episode, I just wanted to drop a quick word from today’s show sponsor which today is the VetX Graduate Community. If you are a practice owner and want to offer your new vets a greater level of support so they grow faster and stay longer with your practice, then jump onto my website drdavenicol.com/vetx-grad and learn how we are enabling practices to recruit and retain talent by helping young vets across the world thrive in clinics just like yours. And with that said and done let’s get into the show. Mia is about as positive a person as you might meet and despite her success, she remains a humble, fun person to spend time with. She is truly a cheerleader for our profession. And I challenge anyone to find a picture on social media where she is not grinning from ear to ear like the proverbial Cheshire Cat. So, without further ado, and with great pleasure, I give you my interview with the human dynamo that is Dr Mia Cary. In this episode we cover: What’s going on at the University of Florida Vet School (they seem to be putting something special in the water there). Why she traded in NAVC for AVMA and what she’s working to achieve. What changes are going to be most likely to shape the profession in the coming 5-10 years. Why her mum is such a rock in her life and how that helped to form her character. Imposter syndrome. Why farting is not only human, but one of life’s great ice breakers! (Seriously).

On this episode of To a Certain Degree, Kristine Murtz provides some great perspective on hospice services, end of life transitions, and the opportunities for volunteers there. She's also been involved with pet rescue for some time, so she also runs the group's Pet Peace of Mind program, keeping pets and their owners together for as long as possible.
There are times in our lives when we need someone to care, someone to just be there. One of these critical periods is at the end of our lives, when we are in hospice. But what if we were told that one who held a very important part in our lives was prohibited from being with us? Someone that didn't care what we looked like. Didn't mind if it was a good day or bad, or even remember their name. What if someone told you that you couldn't have your beloved pet with you when you near your time of passing? Pet Peace of Mind is a non-profit hospice support group, part of the Banfield Charitable Trust. Dianne McGill, the executive director and CEO of the trust, will tell more about this very special example of the human/animal bond.
