Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, Chief Medical Officer at the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), joins us to discuss the evolving role of veterinarians in modern veterinary practices. Dr. Vogelsang introduces the concept of "decentering" the veterinarian to create a more team-based approach that places the patient at the heart of care, similar to patient-centered models in human medicine. She explains how this shift can improve efficiency and client satisfaction by empowering veterinary technicians and support staff to handle many tasks traditionally managed by DVMs. Together, Dr. Andy Roark and Dr. Vogelsang explore the barriers to this model, including liability concerns and the importance of training and trust in a collaborative practice. This thought-provoking conversation is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of veterinary medicine and the evolving dynamics within the field. She initiated her veterinary career at a small Pennsylvania mom and pop veterinary hospital with 2 veterinarians and 10 support team members. During her tenure, she grew this veterinary hospital to a 6-doctor thriving medical practice. While in practice, she taught PT veterinary management courses at the local veterinary technician school, York Technical Institute. In addition, she has presented at AAHA's annual conferences and works with Fred Pryor presenting management topics all over the country. Ayres provides veterinary management consultant services and Zoetis has utilized her services for workshops. Recent years she has worked in the corporate sector, offering coaching and leadership services in a regional capacity for PetVet Care Centers & Mission Veterinary Partners. With this broad view of the veterinary industry, Ayres offers a wide scope of knowledge and the ability to adjust her approach to the needs of the recipients. In 2013, while attending a Zoetis workshop, Ayres was introduced to a beekeeper. Intrigued by the hobby she immediately signed up for beekeeping classes. Ten years later, she received her Master's in Beekeeping from Cornell University, manages 2 apiaries (bee yards) and started a small business, Keys to Bees Inc., a honeybee learning center. The focus of the business is honeybee education and outreach. She teaches: Youth STEM classes, Beekeeping 101, Novice & Advance beekeeping courses and provides research studies for extension services. Perhaps what she enjoys most is utilizing her background in business & leadership to provide workplace enhancements through the examples of the honeybee collaborative harmony. Thousands of honeybees work together as a social organism clearly communicating needs and making unified adjustments as environmental threats arise. By utilizing the methods of the honeybee, we can improve our own business's teamwork, communication, and engagement. Ayres developed “Honeybee Concept”, as a program to intergrade these methods of social unity into the business sector. Those organizations that struggle with teamwork, communication, and organization, have found this “Honeybee Concept” to be refreshing and unique; offering solutions in a non-threatening manner which encourages team engagement and success. The Honeybee Concept not only works for troubled organizations but brings successful organizations to the next level.

What fasting recommendations are you making for your elective anesthetic procedures? Are you recommending that all your patients be fasted overnight? This has been recommended by veterinarians to countless dog and cat owners for years. However, our human counterparts have changed these recommendations in recent years to shorter episodes of fasting before general anesthesia. The most recent anesthesia guidelines provided by American Animal Hospital Association have suggested a different fasting protocol for small animal patients prior to general anesthesia that look awfully similar to the updated human recommendations. What is the evidence that veterinarians should follow suit, especially given the intricate differences between the human and animal gastrointestinal systems? To help us digest this huge topic is Dr. Ioannis Savvas, Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care at School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and dedicated researcher specializing in the complex details of how general anesthesia impacts the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats. With host Dr. Bonnie Gatson, they will discuss the impact of general anesthesia on gastrointestinal motility, how often reflux and regurgitation occur in anesthetized companion animals, and strategies to mitigate these gastrointestinal complications. And of course, they will discuss what we know and don't know when it comes to preanesthetic fasting protocols for dogs and cats.We invite our listeners to check out articles mentioned in today's episode: 2020 AAHA Anesthesia and Monitoring Guidelines for Dogs and CatsIf you like what you hear, we have a couple of favors to ask of you:Become a member at North American Veterinary Anesthesia Society (NAVAS) for access to more anesthesia and analgesia educational and RACE-approved CE content.Spread the word. Here at AAHA, we stay mainly in the small animal realm, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from our colleagues in equine practice. Mike Pownall, DVM, MBA, practice owner, consultant, and fellow podcaster, joins us to talk about what veterinary professionals in any corner of the field can take away from the Synchrony's 2023 Equine Lifetime of Care study. From the recommendation many of us “grew up” with – to keep veterinarians out of cost conversations – to the question of where insurance and financial planning should first be discussed, Mike reminds us that we have more in common than we have differences. In the end, we all came here for the same reasons, and we can and should help each other grow and learn. In case you missed it: Debbie Boone, CVPM, and Josh Vaisman, MAPPCP (PgD), combined forces in front of a live audience at AAHA's annual conference, AAHA Con, in September 2023. Debbie and Josh both published books this year, and both of them have appeared on Central Line to talk about them, but the two of them together are unarguably an unstoppable force for positive change. The 2023 AAHA Veterinary Technician Utilization Guidelines are out, and we're discussing all the good stuff and the one questionable inclusion (according to Dr. Ward). Viewfinders, there's a lot to talk about! This week, we're live from the first veterinary technician-focused conference, HiVE, in Austin, Texas! (well, at least Beckie is there...). Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT, dive into the recently released AAHA Veterinary Technician Utilization Guidelines. They review the subtle - but potentially impactful - shift in proposed vet tech terminology and tips for optimizing your veterinary technicians. Finally, Dr. Ward shares the one thing he's not sure should've been included with the guidelines (no spoilers! You have to listen to it all to find out what it is!). Viewfinders, what do you think about this discussion, and do you agree with Dr. Ward? Share your thoughts on our Instagram or Facebook pages, or email us at veterinaryviewfinder@gmail.com Read the 2023 AAHA Veterinary Technician Utilization Guidelines here: https://www.aaha.org/aaha-guidelines/2023-aaha-technician-utilization-guidelines/home/

Some client conversations can go south quickly – and others never seem to get easier, no matter how many times they come up. Sarah Wolff, DVM, speaker, consultant, and educator, suggested an FAQ type format for this interview so she could explain how she responds in some of these potentially sticky situations; after all, who hasn't felt like a deer in the headlights in front of an expectant or emotional pet owner? Whether the issue is a schedule snafu or a breach of ethical boundaries, Sarah recommends practicing responses ahead of time with your team, and she's given some great places to start here in this episode. Rebecca may not be a veterinarian, but she's married to one—so she's had a front row seat to a lot of the challenges faced by veterinary professionals. We can't get enough of Rebecca's infectious enthusiasm for her subject matter: STRESS. How to live with it, how to channel it, and how to keep it from taking over your brain (and your exam room, and your email inbox)… and why a LACK of stress made her stop climbing trees for a living. Telehealth isn't a new conversation anymore, and it's certainly still controversial—but Jess Trimble, DVM, chief veterinary officer at Anipanion, has lots of reasons to be optimistic about its role in the future of vet med. Jess has hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that has made traditional clinical work impossible. For her, telehealth isn't just about accessibility, education, and peace of mind for clients; it's about allowing more professionals in all roles to stay active within the veterinary community. Jess shares how EDS has changed how she's looked at her profession, her colleagues, and her clients, where she sees telehealth already making a big difference in connecting clients and pets in need with vet professionals who can help, and why the buzz about VCPR actually doesn't affect a whole lot of what we can do with virtual care. Find free CE and lots more at ce.anipanion.com, and connect with Jess on Linkedin. We have no plant resources for you. Katie just isn't that person. A brand new Telehealth Guidelines Certificate course, developed by Jess and AAHA's Chief Medical Officer, Jessica Vogelsang, DVM, will be available soon from AAHA Learning! This week on the Uncharted Podcast, practice management geek Stephanie Goss is joined by a very special guest, former practice manager and author of the new AAHA press book Lead to Thrive - The Science of Crafting a Positive Veterinary Culture, Josh Vaisman, MAPPCP (PgD). Josh believes all veterinary professionals deserve to feel fulfilled by their work, each and every day. Through his company, Flourish Veterinary Consulting, he combines more than 20 years of veterinary experience, a master's in applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology, and education in Positive Leadership and Positive Organizational Scholarship and a passion for guiding leaders to cultivate work environments in which people can thrive. Fun fact – Josh is also an avid beekeeper who teaches beginning beekeepers how to tend to their buzzing buddies. Josh and Stephanie are looking at Josh's new book through the lens of his practice management road and the journey he took to becoming a positive leader and force for good in our field. They talk about their own success and failures in an unflinchingly honest and vulnerable way. Let's get into this... Buy Josh's New Book - Lead to Thrive here (AAHA MEMBERSHIP NOT REQUIRED TO BUY!) NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPACT OF A POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP - The Wright Brothers. Venus and Serena. Han Solo and Chewbacca. Okay, that last one was (far) far-fetched… but there's no denying that all of these rockstar duos made a lasting impression on us. They innovated, discovered, experimented, and explored the unknown, all to leave the world a bit better than they found it. Veterinary practice leaders can form powerful partnerships just like these. Collaboration in leadership might sound simple, but for any of you that do it on a regular basis, you know it can be anything but easy! Every partnership (like every veterinary practice) is unique and faces very specific challenges. To be successful, you must identify your strengths and weaknesses as individuals and as a pair. By working to further your skills within your respective role, then coming together to work collaboratively with your partner, you can quickly break problems down into manageable pieces and move forward as a team. This December, The Practice Leaders Summit is here to infuse the powerful veterinary partnership of practice owners and practice managers with renewed energy and understanding. You both want a strengthened foundation to guide the practice (or practices!) you lead so that it can continue on to future success. Sign up today! Some of our favorite conversations are with thought leaders from outside veterinary medicine—there's something refreshing about realizing that the challenges we face in vet med aren't always unique to our industry. Laura Gassner Otting, or LGO, is an executive coach and author of two books, Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life (2019), and Wonderhell: Why Success Doesn't Feel Like It Should... and What to Do About It (2023). Both books debuted at #2 on major bestseller lists, and we have a feeling it's not only because LGO has appeared on Good Morning America and TODAY, given TED talks, and served as a presidential appointee in Clinton's White House – she just has a knack for putting tough concepts into terms that resonate. Many of us in vet med spent our whole lives working towards a goal—getting into school, being credentialed, finding that first job. But as a lot of us find out, working hard for years to get somewhere doesn't protect us from burnout, disillusionment, or feeling lost without another star to aim for. In this episode, LGO talks about why success sometimes feels as scary and difficult as it can feel great. Find out more about LGO at lauragassnerotting.com. Kelly Drescher Johnson, M.Div, appeared earlier this year to talk about why she loves her job as a veterinary receptionist. This week she's back to share some of what she's learned as a veterinary chaplain—from how to care for team members experiencing grief (let's make bereavement leave as normal for the loss of a pet as it is for the loss of a close human family member!), why they don't write “DOA” on the treatment board, and why you don't have to have the right words to show a devastated client they're cared for and loved. A theme has emerged over many seemingly unrelated conversations during the life of Central Line, and it's the idea that many of the challenges we face in vet med today can be at least partially prevented or addressed by good leadership—but most veterinary professionals, including those promoted to management positions, receive little to no training in how to be a good leader. Laura Pletz, DVM, has a diverse career portfolio that led to her current role as Group Medical Director at BluePearl, where one of her primary responsibilities is to help develop veterinary leaders, and president of the Women's Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI). In this conversation, Laura shares tips on how both current and aspiring leaders can find the space to grow together. Mentioned in this episode: DiSC, Myers-Briggs, StrengthsFinder, Brene Brown, Adam Grant, Simon Sinek, Cornell Women in Leadership certificate program Central Line is made possible with the generous support of CareCredit. A good friend will encourage you to go for your dreams; a great friend (and, if you're lucky, a great mentor) will encourage you to dig into whether you're dreaming of the right things. Melody Martinez, CVT, founder and principal consultant at Acorde Consulting, president of the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association, and task force member for the 2023 AAHA Mentoring Guidelines, tells the story of why she didn't become a veterinarian—and why a true mentor/mentee relationship, formal or not, requires knowing each other well enough to risk asking hard questions, admitting when you don't know the answers, and working together to explore the “What if” rather than saying right away, “We can't do that.” Connect with Melody at https://www.workwithacorde.com/ and https://mcvma.org/. Please enjoy this encore presentation of our previously released episode with Eric Garcia. Please stay tuned as the Central Line Podcast will be back with a new episode next Tuesday. Companies with strong branding don't take breaks from advertising just because their popular products are out of stock – and, according to our guest, Eric Garcia, veterinary practices shouldn't take breaks from marketing themselves just because there's no extra room in the schedule right now. Eric is a digital marketing expert and sought-after voice on the veterinary speaking circuit, and he recommends that practices take a data-driven approach to marketing themselves. This conversation isn't just for practice owners and managers – Eric outlines some simple things anyone in the practice can do to improve the day-to-day client experience (because that's marketing, too!) when the schedule is packed. Get in touch with Eric on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, by email at eric@simplydonetechsolutions.com, or at on his website. If you ask most veterinary professionals what to do first if a client brings in their vomiting, anorexic diabetic cat, they'll say without hesitation: Check a blood glucose! But, as we learned from Renee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP(F), a BG might not tell you what you need to know if that patient is taking Bexacat™, the new oral diabetes drug for cats. In this conversation, she addresses some FAQs regarding what this drug is, how to use it, and why it's a gamechanger—as well as why it's not the right choice for every diabetic cat. We hope to see you in San Diego this September 20-23 for AAHA Con! This redesigned conference experience will have content for the entire veterinary team. Registration is OPEN NOW for AAHA Con 2023! His journey began with graduation from Cornell University, the No. 1 school in the U.S. for veterinary medicine. After 13 years as a Boston veterinarian, he founded Boston Veterinary Clinic in 2012, placing an emphasis on trust, compassion, and top-level patient care. Embraced by the pet-loving community and with the aid of like-minded veterinary professionals, the practice has grown to 5 locations, each focusing on the best medicine possible with accreditations from AAHA, Fear Free, and Cat-Friendly Practices.

Right off the bat in this hour, she weighs in on why so many people allow fear to drive their attitudes towards the trans and gender diverse community: “Just by being in the room, a trans person challenges everything you thought you knew... every single piece of the way society is built.” And with LGBTQIA+ rights under attack in over half of the United States alone, that fear can be life-threatening to people who, in Kate's words, are “literally just trying to exist.” Follow Kate, ARVA and The Veterinary Kaleidoscope Summit, Australia's first face-to-face veterinary conference dedicated to diversity and inclusion, on LinkedIn! Allyship means more than four weeks of rainbow logos on social media. For our colleagues in the LGBTQIA+ community right now, love alone isn't enough. Visit https://pridevmc.org/allyship-resources/ to learn about essential ways you can encourage, empower, and take action on behalf of fellow veterinary professionals and their families. Caffeinators, you know we love talking about veterinary technician education. We've looked at it from many different angles, and today there's another one. Jenn DeForge is a CVT in Massachusetts and reached out to us a while back and we finally were able to have her come by to discuss what she does in education. Get this-she teaches HIGH SCHOOL students! She works for a polytechnic school in Massachusetts teaching high school students in a program that upon graduation, they can become certified veterinary assistants. She talks about getting them in the pipeline of vet med a little earlier and teaching them the realities of the profession and all of the things you can do so that they have a more complete picture of veterinary medicine. It was another fascinating discussion you don't want to miss!
