Can you lead people to water and make them drink? This week's episode starts out with a mailbag question where the writer already has part of their answer. And life is always a little more complicated than at first glance so Dr. Andy Roark and practice manager Stephanie Goss dive into this mailbag entry from a veterinarian who is considering joining a new practice. This practice is quite different from what this vet is used to AND wanting. They want a practice that utilizes their techs for more than nail trims, where the DVMs aren't doing tech work and that is more efficient. This DVM wants to know "Can I hope to change this practice and how do I start the conversation with grace?" This one is seemingly uncomplicated but Andy and Stephanie always find a twist. This week on the Uncharted Podcast, Stephanie Goss is going rogue. She invited Tyler Grogan, Veterinary Technician and Uncharted Social Media Goddess as well as Eric Garcia, Marketing and Social Media genius/guru of Simply Done Tech onto the podcast. Fair warning - when Stephanie gets to have dear friends on the podcast, shenanigans ensue and this week is no exception. You may have heard Eric lecture or write about a topic near and dear to his heart - #unplugging. If you haven't heard about it, you are definitely in for a treat. Stephanie and Tyler were both inspired by Eric's invitation to veterinary medicine to unplug from social media and technology and lean into being present for periods of time in your life. All three of them lined up time this summer and this episode is their get together to discuss what went wrong, where they struggled the most, what went perfectly right and whether they will do it again. You all be the judge - let's get into this. PS - As mentioned in the episode, you can check out Bored and Brilliant. All things Eric has written on unplugging can be found here https://ericgarciafl.com/unplugged/ ABOUT OUR GUESTS Eric Garcia - IT expert. Digital marketer. Industry thought leader. When it comes to helping veterinary practices streamline their technology and attract and retain clients, Eric Garcia has a proven track record of educating the industry and producing results. Have you ever worked somewhere that the team felt frustrated at the lack of accountability for repeated mistakes and the drastic differences in work ethic between staff members? When frustration like this extends over time, the result can be cultivating an office environment with a huge increase in tension, gossip, and bickering. Dr. Andy Roark and practice manager Stephanie Goss tackle a mailbag question from a veterinary technician who is grappling with a hospital environment like this. They feel like their practice owner and manager haven't really addressed things from the perspective of the team but this tech feels they might be open to suggestions on what to do and how to approach the situation. Our vet tech says they are "not really sure where to even start with coming up with an overhaul in training/rewards/consequences.." and asked for input from Andy and Stephanie. Have you ever judged someone on your team when you happened across them sitting down at work and staring into space? Or heard someone say "If there is time to lean, there is time to clean!" Dr. Andy Roark and practice manager Stephanie Goss loved this short but complicated question from a manager wondering what to do about a fellow manager on their team who tends to look at things from a snapshot perspective - they see what is immediately happening and judge, without giving the team the benefit of the doubt or asking more questions. This week on the podcast, we have a cross-over episode! That's right, this is a Cone of Shame episode. Imagine a CSR working from home, checking a client out and booking appointments from his home, or a technician live-chatting with three different pet owners through the clinic webpage from her apartment, or a doctor doing telemedicine appointments from another state? This isn't fantasy. There are practices actually making these things happen today. Christina Freeman and Summer Burke-Irmiter join Dr. Andy Roark to talk about how their clinic is breaking the mold to give employees (and clients) flexibility like never before. Let's get into this. ABOUT OUR GUESTS Christina Freeman joined the Adobe family in 2015 and focused her first few years in the Veterinary Marketplace. She was excited to move to the remote team and work with our online chat services and telemedicine and help these new communication tools grow and evolve. Christina is a native of North Carolina where she currently lives with her family and a large collection of animals great and small. Christina has a retail background and degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University along with a teaching certification in all things science. She spends her spare time chasing children, gardening, doing pottery and oil painting. Summer Burke-Irmiter, MBA, has worked in veterinary hospitals for over 25 years. At the Uncharted Conferences, you will find her proudly wearing her Founding Member button and excitedly talking about her two amazing hospitals with over 22 doctors, the Open Hospital design which allows clients to go wherever their pets go and pitching her latest outlandish ideas to anybody who will listen. She's earned the nickname of "Goddess of Innovation" in some circles (along with other nicknames we won't mention here) by helping to launch remote teams at Adobe over 9 years ago, pushing for video visits a year before the pandemic, and touting the benefits of online chat to her team. The recent development of Video Client Representatives is one of the many creative solutions Summer has to solve common issues in our industry. Summer runs away to the circus every chance she gets and trains in Cirque du Soleil type arts such as lyra, a spinning hoop 6-12 feet in the air. Can the team sabotage a new doctor before they even start? This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are tackling a letter from the mailbag. A medical director colleague wrote in and shared with the team that they have a doctor coming onboard that has worked previously as a tech in their hospital. Should be a major win, right?? Our medical director says hold your excitement because only now that our new vet has been hired is our Medical Director being informed that the team does not like the new vet. The team says they have a bad attitude; techs have said the vet has had rough handling of patients... but none of this was noted by our Medical Director when the new doctor was a tech, and none of these things have been addressed with the new hire doctor during their previous employment. Sounds like a management headache worth talking through. They are asking themselves (and us) “How do I know if it's a place I should stay away from?”. They shared that they have procedures/processes that feel ethically right and wrong to them to help guide the medicine they are looking for. And they want to know what kind of signposts they can use to help guide the “soft” stuff - whether people in the clinic actually like each other. Or whether they love or hate their jobs. How to tell a toxic environment from a good one and most importantly - how do I decide what feels like a good fit for me? Whether you are facing an externship or just looking for your next position, Dr. Roark and Stephanie share some of their favourite bits of perspective on interviewing as well as choosing a position. This week's episode is brought to you, ad free, by our sponsor - Pets Best Pet Health Insurance. This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie have the pleasure of spending some time with their friend, Dr. Peter Weinstein. Our conversation takes a winding path through some timely and relevant topics in veterinary medicine - There is a lot of chatter about money right now in veterinary medicine, in a variety of contexts. We wanted to talk today about where we are when it comes to pet owners paying for services, how to get access to services for more clients and how we communicate with clients about pricing and any financial concerns they have. All of these things are tied to the level of care and service we provide to our patients. Let's get into this...

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic from the mailbag. We received an email from Dr. It's Not the End of the World. They are struggling with a CSR on the team who seems to catastrophize everything. Every client they speak with seems to be upset about something and yet when the team jumps in to help, the clients seem to simply be in need of help with something. Dr. It's Not The End of the World wants to know - Isn't helping clients why we are here? And how do we help this person learn to empathize with clients and de-escalate the client's stress instead of adding their own anxiety to the situation? Let's get into this... This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a letter from the mailbag. We received a note from a veterinary technician who is feeling very frustrated with the language that our industry is using to describe ourselves and communicate the pain and frustration we are all experiencing, outwardly to the rest of the world. This technician feels like they see conversations happening where we vetmed people say “This is a field meant for broken people” and they disagree. Andy and I are in their camp and want to talk about it, so… Let's get into this. Links: This episode contains discussion topics (mental health, suicide crisis) that may be triggering. This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a letter from the mailbag. A practice owner wrote in, feeling very frustrated by an associate doctor on their team who is struggling significantly with self confidence and their belief in themselves as a good doctor. It seems like any time someone on the team asks questions about a patient's care or double checks a drug dose or asks to look at x-rays and discuss what the doctor is seeing, Dr. Sensitive takes those as personal affronts and explodes in anger or tears. They feel like the team doesn't trust them and doesn't act like they believe they are a good doctor. Our practice owner is wondering what to do since it feels like a lot of is being blown out of proportion and aren't things they themselves would be fussed over. Let's get into this... This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they bought a practice a few years ago that came with a handful of toxic team members. Those people have self ejected or been weeded out and the team has been working in synergy for some time. However the last few months, the griping and the passive aggressive comments have snuck in. People are eye rolling at each other and biting each other's heads off over little things. This practice owner is feeling defeated and is also determined to get their positive culture back and hold the team accountable. Since everyone is involved, they are planning a team meeting to discuss. The practice owner wanted to know a few things about how best to set it up - they asked some great specific questions: Do I bring up specific examples of things people have done/have been doing? How hard do I come down on them for future incidents? How do I get them to correct their behavior and be accountable for their actions, without driving them out? Let's get into this... Moving Up Manager asked for advice in making the transition from managing a small mom-and-pop GP practice that has long term clientele and lower prices to managing a brand new high-end, boutique ER/Specialty practice. They were looking for advice on how to handle the different types of client service issues that may be unique to each type of practice as well as general advice for making that kind of transition.
