Before You Listen to This EpisodeHello there! I'm Blaise Delfino, host of the Hearing Matters Podcast! I want to thank you for donating your time and listening to this episode. If you've listened to previous episodes, you will notice this one is  a little different. You see, there's been a lot of changes in my life that I wanted to share with our listeners and my patients at Audiology Services. Before sharing new journey, I wanted to bring you back to where it all started. I am where I am today because of the experiences I had the tail end of high school and college (undergrad and grad).  I am genetically predisposed to hearing healthcare. My parents are hearing healthcare providers and started a private audiology practice over 20 years ago. It's safe to say almost every dinner table discussion was centered around hearing healthcare. I knew about compression and digital processing at the age of 10. I know, not the most riveting conversation when you're a child. However, it is because of these conversations and my life experiences I have been able to help patients Hear Life's Story.  Treating Patients at Audiology ServicesI graduated with my Master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders. During my commencement speech I told my fellow colleagues that we have all put in our "10,000 hours" to deliver patient centered care. Following graduation, all of my classmates had secured positions in different clinical settings. When asked what my plans were following graduation and what setting I would be going in to, I responded, "Well, I won't be getting my CCC's. I'm going to work at Audiology Services and build Fader Plugs." You see, it was at this time I was not sure I was making the right decision. Mentors, friends, and family members asked if this was what I really wanted. In my heart of hearts, I knew this was the right decision. Five years later, Audiology Services is continuing to serve the Lehigh Valley with two locations in Nazareth and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I thoroughly enjoyed my full-time position at Audiology Services. It was during this time I had the opportunity to interface with patients and work with them throughout their new hearing journey. Many of my patients trusted me with their hearing weeks after I graduated from graduate school. Living in the Lehigh Valley they have many treatment options. However, they chose and trusted Audiology Services.  That is a sacred trust and I always wanted to ensure they received 110% from us. The Phone Call I Will Never Forget It's 6:00 p.m. on a Sunday. My wife and I are both home with the flu. We're eating Chick-fil-A and all of a sudden, my phone starts ringing. It's a Minnesota area code. I think to myself, "Who could this be calling me from Minnesota? On a Sunday?!" I answer the phone. "Hello, this is Blaise." "Hi, Blaise. It's Brandon Sawalich with Starkey. I understand you want a little bit of a challenge and want to make a greater impact in the hearing healthcare industry." I have always admired Brandon's leadership style and his passion for hearing healthcare. It was during this call I said, "Brandon...we're going to help a lot of people." Today, I am the Director of Professional Relations at Starkey. I would not be in this position if it were not for my patients who trusted me with their hearing all these years. Thank you. Hear Life's Story!

This week I am sharing a special Fierce Factor Encore episode with Alisha Rose Merlo, Senior Director of Professional Relations at Colorescience and Founder of The Inspo Zone on LinkedIn. She joins us to share her journey to the aesthetics industry, the importance of elevating others and how to be the most authentic version of yourself. Leaving New Jersey to attend school for a Degree in Speech Language Pathology, Alisha knew three things: she was never getting married, never having kids and never driving a minivan. Looking back now, a married mother and grandmother of two, Alisha's biggest learning from that time is never say never. Alisha goes on to discuss hurdles in her life and career, both self-imposed and external. The best advice Alisha can offer is that if you have to wait, make use of the waiting. Have patience, gain knowledge and learn to apply it. Be ready when the opportunity does come. Networking and building community is about elevating others and adding value according to our fierce guest. In this episode Alisha offers advice to her younger self (shouldn't we all!?). Take the time to recognize the milestones as you reach them. Be present. Don't compromise your integrity to advance, and pursue everything you do with a heartfelt passionate intensity. The Point is Recovery Podcast was started one year ago in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic to shine a light on some good news. And that good news is that Addiction Recovery is Possible! The podcast was the brainchild of the Professional Relations Team at Turning Point of Tampa, which is led by Joan Browne, Director of Professional Relations turned Producer. The team was focused on covering relevant topics that would be of interest to everyone, because let's be clear, addiction does not discriminate, and many people will be affected by it at some point in their life. So, after mixing 1 part tenacious (Joan), 1 part funny (Chris), 1 part resourceful (Ashley) and another part tech savvy (Jeremiah, AKA “Big J”), The Point is Recovery Podcast came to fruition and the first episode was aired on September 2, 2020!It meant a lot to us to launch in September as September is National Recovery Month. It is so important for us to celebrate the 23 million Americans living in recovery in the United States as well as the countless family, friends and behavioral health professionals that support them. This podcast is dedicated to everyone affected by addiction and our hope is that we can not only share information and resources that make recovery accessible for everyone, but also do our part to end the stigma.Episode 25 is going to be a bit different. We take a look back and discuss some of the highlights from the past year. In 2021, we continue to be focused on ending the stigma of addiction & mental health and that all starts with normalizing recovery!Today on the other mics are our Producer, Joan Browne and our Sound Engineer, Jeremiah Fowler, also known around here as Big J.www.rm.facesandvoicesofrecovery.orgwww.tpoftampa.comwww.thepointisrecoverypodcast.comwww.facebook.com/TurningPointofTampawww.twitter.com/TurningPointTPAwww.instagram.com/turningpointtpawww.youtube.com/user/TurningPointofTampawww.linkedin.com/company/turning-point-of-tampa-incwww.facebook.com/ThePointisRecoveryPodcastwww.instagram.com/thepointisrecoverypodcast

In this episode, we are talking with Rick Hubbard. Rick is the Executive Vice President of Professional Relations at Origins.  Rick shares about his journey from the commercial banking industry to being the Executive Vice President of Professional Relations. He shares his struggles with alcohol and drugs and finally surrendering to God.  He shares how he found and surrendered to go in the ditch.  Show Notes: [00:37 We are excited to welcome Rick Hubbard. Rick is the Executive Vice President of Professional Relations at Origins. [01:29] Rick serves as the leader of the Origins professional relations team. Their team is responsible for serving as a liaison between their facilities and the outside world. He builds relationships and those relationships facilitate healing.  [03:41] Through that process of listening they can determine the extent of which the patient is suffering, the patient's immediate family, and loved ones.  Then they are charged with the responsibility of identifying what a solution can be.  [04:31] Rick shares his journey from working in commercial banking to where he is now. There are many similarities between what he was doing in the banking industry and what he is doing now.   [06:56] Part of the action was to take the home buyers out to dinner and happy hour and he found himself caught up in problematic drinking.   [08:12] He always lived in a certain amount of fear and anxiety and the alcohol helped to treat that for him but eventually it became such a burden that he found himself engaged in behavior that he never thought he would.  [09:43] He got deeper and deeper into alcohol and drug use. It wore him down and eventually he found himself in a treatment center for the first time in 2000.   [11:32] When he went to the addiction center for the second time they told him that they could help him but they would need to change everything about himself but if he was not willing nothing would change.   [13:23] He learned that there were things in his life that were more important to him and if he would give up those things and find a God of my understanding that his life would get better, but he would have to surrender.  [15:33] His mom's words to not come back until he got it right haunted him and motivated him to get it right.  [17:01] Rick shares his experience about getting a construction job.  [19:45] He found himself praying as he was digging the ditches. After a while he surrendered and asked God to give him the perseverance for the work.  [21:08] He was literally in a ditch and he found God in a ditch in Abilene, Texas. He learned that no matter what he thinks he needs, God's plan is always much better and a greater plan than anything he could devise.   [22:29] His sponsor told him that he knew what to do and now you need to do it.  [24:01] His faith grew more and more as he was better able to put his trust in the God of his understanding. The evidence was true that there was a power greater than him working in his life and if he would just surrender everything was going to be okay and get better.  [26:07] Doing God's will sometimes means accepting where we are and doing the next right thing and the best we can.  [28:05] One year and three weeks after he took that construction job, he got a call from the treatment center CEO saying he had a job for him. He realized that everything in his life had prepared him for that moment and he realized that is why he suffered.  [30:29] None of us can avoid suffering. Our suffering can either be something that clings on and keeps us sick or that is transformed into something that has meaning and value.  [33:03] He is seeing things today that he didn't see forty years ago in the inner cities and communities of color. The degree to which he sees people suffering from various levels of mental health disorders has seemed to increase drastically in the past three to four years.  Many are also struggling with substance abuse.  [34:56] We have to decide as treatment providers that we are going to be deliberate and focused on a strategy to provide the specialized outreach needed to reach these communities. As providers we have to begin to look at how we deliver treatment services.  [36:24] We have failed and that failure has been misassociated with a lack of funding.  There is truly a lack of funding but there is also a lack of effort.  [38:49] Ask the questions and have the dialogue.  We can change the way we exist if we will just listen and talk to each other.  Links and Resources: Something More Podcast Origins Website Origins on Facebook Origins on Instagram

It is a very special episode this week as it officially marks the one-year anniversary of Let The Journey Begin! To properly celebrate, we bring on Rick Hubbard, Executive Vice President of Professional Relations at Origins Behavioral Healthcare to talk about his journey through sobriety. Rick is a bit different from a lot of our guests in that he did not seek help and obtain sobriety until the age of 46. He explains how he first experimented with prescription drugs as a teenager by mixing pills together that his mother brought home from work to construct his own “cocktail.” He also talks about the first time he was introduced to alcohol at the age of 15 in order to ease anxiety. These experiences, along with many others, he believes can be attributed to having a lack of identity growing up and the substances were the ultimate solution. Rick grew older and had a great deal of success in the banking industry, but further substance abuse sent his life and career into a tailspin. After Rick hit rock bottom, he finally reached out for help and has now been sober for nearly 20 years. Today, Rick has dedicated his life to service. He believes that God pulled him out of the ditch he was in so that he could help pull someone else out of their own. Rick also talks about the difficulties of admitting to a problem, especially for those who have a lot of people depending on them. His message is that although it may seem like you will be hurting those people by going away for treatment, you will ultimately be doing much more damage to those same people by not. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, but especially for healthcare workers on the front lines. Due to this, it's more important now than ever, that pharmacy technicians practice at the very top of their license. While boards of pharmacy have traditionally limited pharmacy technician practice from performing such tasks like final product verification, administering immunizations to patients, or performing CLIA-waived point of care testing, more and more states are undergoing the process of reviewing, discussing, and in some cases changes their rules to permit properly trained technicians to perform these and other tasks. To further seize on this trend, NHA has spearheaded an initiative to bring together representatives from some of the biggest pharmacy organizations in the industry.  The initiative, The Coalition for the Advancement of Pharmacy Technician Practice, aims to work together to stay up to date with current state boards of pharmacy that are discussing this very important topic, and to engage other state boards of pharmacy to consider broadening pharmacy technician scope of practice. By bringing together retail pharmacy  giants like Albertsons Companies, Walmart, Kroger and Walgreens, along with state pharmacy associations, pharmacy academicians, and organizations such as the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council, the coalition's collective voice and singular mission is to further expedite the spread of states allowing pharmacy technicians to do more.  This support from the industry will be key to continuing to elevate the pharmacy profession across the nation. In this episode, OnScript brings together representatives from some of the coalition's partnering organizations to discuss the importance of expanding pharmacy technician roles and the positive impact that has been realized in those states that have already expanded pharmacy technician practice. It is fitting and timely that this discussion happen on Pharmacy Technician's Day to show pharmacy technicians that the industry recognizes the important role they play in all pharmacies and how critical it is to advocate and be an additional voice for the technician workforce, and also pass on the gratitude that each of these organizations have for the work technicians are doing everyday. Mark Dilatush, President: Howard Farran said of Mark, "Multitudes of dentists have benefited from the wisdom and integrity that Mark brings to every project. His thoughtfulness and sincere approach has aided scores of dentists in finding their path to greater dental success."   Mark heads our analysis/strategy department. Mark has a unique combined background in dental technology, dental practice management, practice marketing, and dental business analytics, which was built over the past 23 years in dentistry. He works very closely with Jay Ostendarp and Jane Shewman. He and his team are responsible for building client marketing plans that pose the least risk to our client marketing budgets with the highest potential return.   Mark says: "Nobody here will ever try to "sell" you anything. The analysis/strategy department spends all of its time gathering data, studying it, determining the best strategy for a client, documenting everything, and then explaining everything in detail. We will take as much time as you need or desire. This will be a ZERO pressure experience for you. We want our clients to fully understand the big picture."   Howie Horrocks, Founder/CEO: Howie is the author of two dental best sellers, Unlimited New Patients, Volume ONE and Unlimited New Patients, Volume TWO; Trade Secrets of America's Dental Marketing Guru. He is the Founder and CEO of New Patients, Inc., the advertising agency exclusively for dentists.   Howie started in advertising in 1984. He wrote ad campaigns for a myriad of businesses including photographers, retail suppliers, software companies, manufacturing companies, sandwich shops, caterers, artists, print companies, accountants, podiatrists, chiropractors, a national sports figure and yes, even a lawyer or two.   He was then introduced to a dentist who referred him to another and then another and before long he realized that working only with dentists was what he wanted to do. Since 1989 he has worked exclusively with some of the top dental practices in the US and Canada.   He has authored articles on the subject of new patient marketing for publications such as Dental Economics, Dental Products Report, Dentaltown Magazine, The Richards Report, The Independent Dentist, The Advertising Dentist, The Farran Report, Dental Practice and Finance and others. He also co-moderates Dr. Howard Farran's Dentaltown.com marketing forum.   His books have sold in nearly every country in the world. He also makes personal appearances at seminars, conventions and other dental meetings.   Dr. Howard Farran has called him, "Dentistry's Number One Marketing Man." He has received accolades and endorsements from virtually every leader in the dental profession.   Lee Buzard, VP of Professional Relations: Lee Buzard, Vice President of Professional Relations, has over 19 years of hands-on marketing experience specific to the dental profession. Lee has devoted his marketing expertise working with many dental practices all over the United States and Canada to develop innovative and comprehensive marketing programs. Lee particularly excelled in applying creative marketing and advertising strategies to help practices increase their patient base, market penetration and overall production and resulting revenue. Prior to joining New Patients Inc., Mr. Buzard was, Director of Marketing and Growth at Digital Dental Strategies, Inc., where he was responsible for helping educate dentists about the importance of internet marketing for the dental practices while also developing B2B connections and agreement along with vertical and horizontal digital marketing products for the company.   During this same period of time Mr. Buzard was a featured speaker at the Madow Group. He spoke live at regional meeting in the U.S and Canada. He also presented monthly on a national teleconference call as well as one of the key note speakers at the annual Madow Powerhouse meeting in Baltimore, MD. Prior to joining DDS.com Mr. Buzard purchased and co-owned multiple dental practices, finding him driven with the dental industry and the people in it. This is where he used his marketing and management experience from the private marketing sector to market and grow the dental practices. This is why many have referred to him as a "wet fingered marketing guy." He has walked in the same dental office ownership trenches that many of his clients have. He truly understands when you say; what should I do?   Lee has extensive marketing experience, and insightful expertise which have been instrumental in developing and executing strategic marketing plans for hundreds of dentists. Mr. Buzards' talents, hands-on approach, and dental-specific know-how, coupled with the multi-disciplined abilities and knowledge of the rest of the NPI team creates a rare opportunity for you to have this depth of skill on your team to manage the entire marketing program for your practice.   In his spare time, Lee enjoys hiking, playing golf, reading, and spending quality time with his family.   www.NewPatientsInc.com
