Fortunately, advances in husbandry, nutrition and medicine have led to better health and welfare of these animals, allowing practitioners to focus more on true medical conditions rather than concerns that are caused by poor husbandry. Join this podcast episode of VetFolio Voice to learn more about the special considerations for providing care to these fascinating species. Dr. Cassi and Dana Varble, NAVC's Chief Veterinary Officer, discuss some specific husbandry considerations, such as heat, humidity, UV exposure and diet, the equipment you will need for these patients, and how euthanasia in reptiles differs from euthanasia in mammals.

Veterinary Clinic Violence - Shively Animal Hospital Fatal Shooting This is another conversation about violence in veterinary clinics that we wish we didn't have to have. This week we want to discuss some of the lessons veterinary professionals can learn following the fatal shooting of a veterinary team member at the Shively Animal Hospital in Kentucky. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT, discuss the growing threat of workplace violence in veterinary clinics and steps to take to prepare your team. Dr. Ward recounts his personal experiences with gun violence and the staff training he implemented in his veterinary clinics after his first encounter as a young veterinarian. Beckie calls for more conversations with team members on how to respond to threats, and both hosts call for more attention to the issue from national organizations such as NAVC. Viewfinders, have you been the victim of workplace violence? What steps are you taking to keep your staff safe? The video and article Dr. Ward refers to in the podcast can be found here.

Featuring the professionals who created the NAVC's Pet Therapeutic Nutrition Coach Certification, Dr. Ellen Lowery and VTS Kara Burns, this VetFolio Voice episode provides a thoughtful (and fun!) “team sport” approach to nutrition education in the clinic. They want to inspire the entire veterinary team to bring their “A” game when it comes to educating pet owners about nutrition for the animals they love. As the fifth vital assessment, the nutritional assessment should be completed during each patient visit, which means evaluating nutritional status and making diet recommendations. Clients need and want that information from you, but it can be challenging when they believe myths, misinformation and inaccurate facts. Dr. Lowery and Ms. Burns offer different perspectives that they have integrated into a well-rounded gameplan that you can put into practice easily. It's game time — listen in as host Dr. Cassi explores this essential topic with two of the profession's most respected and engaging experts!

Introducing veterinary technician extraordinaire, Sam Sacasa––the newest member of the VetFolio team. With more than 10 years experience as a CVT, Sam has a lot to say about the issues credentialed veterinary technicians and nurses face today. We'll dive into her experience, passions and motivations.
This week we're joined with vet tech/nurse extraordinaire, Harold Davis, RVT, VTS (ECC) to discuss an important (and exciting) new initiative from our friends at the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) - the Veterinary Nurse/Technician Empowerment Initiative! Harold currently serves as President of the Board of Directors for NAVC and is one of the key drivers behind this expansive seven-part initiative to empower and celebrate veterinary nurses/technicians (and, yes, Viewfinders, Dr. Ward asks Harold to explain that hyphen!). Harold has also been instrumental in many modern-day advancements within the veterinary profession and his story is as much inspirational as impactful. We know you're going to love this conversation! Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT discuss how Harold became an RVT, his secret for remaining enthusiastic about his profession for 46 years (!), his career path, his role in the formation of Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS), and what the NAVC Veterinary Nurse/Technician Empowerment Initiative is all about. So much to talk about! Viewfinders, definitely check out the links below detailing how you can participate in this initiative. And while you're clinking away, please stop by Apple Podcasts and click on 5-stars for us! It would make our week! Thanks again for listening the past five-and-a-half years! We're learning a lot more about Veterinary Technicians this year because of an initiative from the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) which is all about helping us understand their vital role better. Harold Davis, the President of NAVC, joins us to talk about the program. Better results faster. That is what is happening with some new technology that has been developed by Zoetis called VetScan that allows your veterinarian to get test results faster. That means answers more quickly so you and your veterinarian can figure out the best solutions. Dr. Richard Goldstein from Zoetis joins us to explain how it all works. Steve helps listeners by phone and email.
“And I think if we take that sort of, more of a collaborative approach, I think it's, you know, as long as we feel good and we feel comfortable with that, I think it's a great approach to try and take even in GP or in emergency. We had the honor to host the first purrpodcast live at VMX 2019 with special co-star, Dr. Sue CancerVet. Dr. Sue Ettinger is a well-known and wonderful medical oncologist that will discuss tumor reasons for intestinal obstruction. Dr. Susan and I will discuss other causes of common cat GI obstructions, including (string) foreign bodies. Big thanks for VMX and NAVC to make this live edition possible.
Did you know that NAVC CEO Tom Bohn is allergic to cats? We learn from Dr. Susan little that it is not the hair but protein in the saliva is the root cause for Tom's allergies. Tom is a great guest with a wicked sense of humor and we guarantee you will be laughing in this episode.

We discuss the changes she's seen in veterinary medicine during her career, the changes at NAVC and VMX, and what she hopes to accomplish as NAVC President. This is a wide-ranging conversation that touches on so many aspects of real, daily veterinary practice life. PLEASE GIVE US A REVIEW! On today’s episode, it’s a pleasure to be joined by Dr Mia Cary. When I ask for guest recommendations from you guys, Mia’s is a name that comes up frequently, and here’s why. She has seen animal care from multiple different and interesting vantage points. And she’s excelled in them all. She began her career as a marine biologist before trading dolphins for dogs and completed her veterinary degree at the University of Florida. After graduation, she had a short spell in general practice before moving into her first industry role with Novartis where she spent many years rising to the level of national sales trainer and brand manager. She then moved to the snappily titled Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica where she held the roles of Marketing Manager for the Companion Animal Section and Director of Professional Services for the mid-Atlantic area. Her career then took a new direction when she traded a life in pharma for a role as the head of training and innovation for the North American Veterinary Community. A role she last year somewhat controversially traded in to move over to the American Veterinary Medical Association where she is now Chief of Professional Development and Strategic Alliances. Alongside her day jobs, Mia has also served as the 2017 President for the American Association of Industry Veterinarians and is on the Board of Directors for Pet Peace of Mind. And if all of that left you a little overwhelmed then just know this, Mia is an amazing example of leadership done right and she knows this industry, at least the North American bit of it, inside and out. Now, just before we jump into the episode, I just wanted to drop a quick word from today’s show sponsor which today is the VetX Graduate Community. If you are a practice owner and want to offer your new vets a greater level of support so they grow faster and stay longer with your practice, then jump onto my website drdavenicol.com/vetx-grad and learn how we are enabling practices to recruit and retain talent by helping young vets across the world thrive in clinics just like yours. And with that said and done let’s get into the show. Mia is about as positive a person as you might meet and despite her success, she remains a humble, fun person to spend time with. She is truly a cheerleader for our profession. And I challenge anyone to find a picture on social media where she is not grinning from ear to ear like the proverbial Cheshire Cat. So, without further ado, and with great pleasure, I give you my interview with the human dynamo that is Dr Mia Cary. In this episode we cover: What’s going on at the University of Florida Vet School (they seem to be putting something special in the water there). Why she traded in NAVC for AVMA and what she’s working to achieve. What changes are going to be most likely to shape the profession in the coming 5-10 years. Why her mum is such a rock in her life and how that helped to form her character. Imposter syndrome. Why farting is not only human, but one of life’s great ice breakers! (Seriously).
How do you turn your digital marketing into actual clients that come into your veterinary practice? That is the question that we're going to cover in today's episode with guest Dr. Andy Roark. Andy has done an incredible job of turning his digital community into an actual community of people who attended his conference Uncharted. Today's episode is longer than an average episode but it is filled with some really great insight that will help you and your veterinary practice. Events are a great way to get people who just normally engage with you online to turn into clients who build a relationship with, and today's episode is packed with great tips on how to do just that. For those of you stuck under a rock and who don't know Andy, he has some impressive accomplishments under his belt when it comes to digital marketing. Andy is a practicing veterinarian, international speaker, author, and media personality. Dr. Roark has been voted Practice Management Speaker of the Year at NAVC, one of the world's largest veterinary conferences, two out of the last three years. He also received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine. Practices where Dr. Roark works were named as finalists in the American Animal Hospital Association's Practice of the Year Contest in 2013 and 2015. He also has built his website to the point where it gets hundreds of thousands of page views, has grown his Facebook page to over 234,000 likes, and most recently, launch a successful conference and online community. I was able to speak at his conference, UnchartedVet.com and I was blown away at the quality of the attendees, the amount of community he helped to foster and the level of high execution he and his team performed to make everything come together. In today's episode, we talk about how he pulled this all together and what some of his biggest lessons from creating and promoting this conference, which is now open for registration but I'm sure it will sell out quickly! Be sure to visit UnchartedVet.com and if you have the opportunity to go to the conference, do it! Your practice will see a positive change from the information and community that you will benefit from.
On today’s show I am joined by my good friend Dr Andy Roark. Andy is one of the hottest properties in veterinary medicine with good reason. He’s a tireless networker, innovator and one of the best presenters on the vet speaking circuit. His accolades to date include winning NAVC speaker of the year three times over, creating and presenting the “Cone of Shame" Youtube show and founding the Uncharted Vet Conference. Much of this being possible because he has built one of the largest personal brands in vet industry, amassing well over 200,000 fans on Facebook on the way to becoming a social media personality. A phenomenon that makes it truely a pain in the backside trying to have a quiet drink at the bar with him at any vet conference, such is the omni-present demand for selfies with Andy or “Roarkies” as I now decided to call them. We had a great chat and got stuck into some great topics including: 1. What inspired Dr Roark into becoming a vet. 2. Why networking is an essential part of having a great career and how you can be a great networker too. 3. How to build a personal brand. 4. How to do social media without it taking over your life - Andy shares why despite his huge Facebook following, he’s removed the Facebook app from his phone. We also cover: 5. The best advice he received from Dr Marty Becker. 6. Why advice (even his own) should sometimes be taken with a large pinch of salt 7. And we learn more about his Uncharted Vet Community. This episode was a pleasure from start to finish. Often, by the time I publish a blog, book article or podcast, I’m kinda getting to the point of being sick of it, such is the effort and detail focus required to create content of a quality anyone would want to consume regularly. This podcast, however, was a rare exception. There’s great advice a plenty from Dr Roark of course, but there’s also flow, humour, warmth and candour woven through the conversation that made is a great interview to perform and work on afterwards. Of course, that’s just my take, you get to be the judge. So sit back, plug in and enjoy my conversation with the humbly available, Dr Andy Roark.
